Sere sat herself down on a seat, choosing the table closest to the entrance of the Great Hall. Sere Nade is a type that will never miss breakfast. Apart from the information regarding the many benefits of breakfast for the body that she had read, salute to her mom who formed the habit of having breakfast everyday to the family.
Sere looked at the food served on the table and frozed for a moment. She doesn't find what she was looking for. There is no rice again this morning? I think I start to miss my home. Sere was born and raised in England, but the habit of 'get a rice for breakfast' was brought to her also by her mom who is one hundred percent Korean.
They could at least provide rice and kimchi though. That would be more than enough. As her brain continued talking, Sere reached out her hand. She's taking two slices of whole wheat bread and spread blueberry jam on one of the bread, and peanut butter jam on the other. Peanut butter & jelly is a typical American snack, but Sere learned this easy recipe from her British dad. This is a quick solution when she's bored with sausage, bacon, and egg; English breakfast style.
Sere takes a bite of her bread while looking around, immersing the atmosphere of the Great Hall during the breakfast. She could see some students reading their parchments, some others focused on food, but many of them are chatting and laughing with the peers. Whoa! I've been here every morning for more than a month. This scene is starting to be a normal sight for me. She supported her chin with one hand, while still watching all the activities there, her mind starts working on a plan of all the activities she will do to carry out the day.

Esme was back here again, in the same seat she always took, but his time, across from her was a new sight, an individual whom she had never met, she had looked at her with curiosity, then she took a bite of her breakfast, eating it slowly and carefully, she had developed better table manners over the few weeks over here. Then she swayed a bit out of raw boredom with the usual stuff in the great hall
She then began looking to the girl once more, she thought about saying hi, like always she hesitated but then took another bite of her food before thinking about what she'd do today, how she'd hold herself in class, she realized if she'd have class with Gryffindor then she might as well speak to the girl, maybe make an ally and increase both of their grades.
She finally decided to open her mouth. "Hello there, if I may ask, do you think today we'll have classes together? I had forgotten the schedule." She had a a placid tone of voice, not wanting to come off too strong, and yet not to let her voice waver either. She then looked at the girl before her, her eyes wavering, then she keeps the eye contact again.

Sere felt a couple of staring eyes at her while she was thinking about the activities she would do today. While taking another bite of the peanut butter & jelly, Sere changed her focus to someone across the table. This girl? She looks familiar.
Sere frowned when she heard the girl's question and with her frank trait she responded, "It's Sunday." Sere is actually not completely sure that the girl is talking to her. Therefore, Sere looked left and right after answering the girl's question.
I think she is indeed talking to me. I seem to have seen this girl several times. But from which class? Herbology? Transfiguration? Definitely not from the History of Magic. Sere took another bite before opening her mouth, "As I said earlier, I'm pretty sure that... today is Sunday." She thought for a moment, "I'm also pretty sure that I've seen you. We are in the same year. I mean, I always fall in love at the first sight with curly hair, and yours is very beautiful."
Sere took a sip of water before continuing, "I think we're in the same class either Herbology or Transfiguration. I'm not sure, still in the process of memorizing the names of all the classmates," She is again look so thoughtful, "I'm not sure about this one, but... Do you often come to the library? I think I saw you there once or twice."
Sere knocked the long table when she remembered that she had not yet introduced herself to the Hufflepuff girl in front of her, "I'm Sere Nade by the way. I think I talked too much. That much until I forgot to introduce myself. It's nice to meet you."

When Esme heard that that it was Sunday, she suddenly remembered and looked a bit embarrassed, she looked to her side with a nervous giggle. "Ah...so it is, I'm sorry..." She saw someone at the table laugh at her and she shuddered. It was not often that she got the date wrong...today probably wasn't quite her day.
"You have?" So she was right, they did have classes together sometimes, Esme didn't pay too much attention to the people in her classes, so she didn't notice reoccurring faces unless they came back to her in thought. "ó, nǐ(Oh, you)!" she says in reply to the compliment. It was common for Esme to make interjections in Chinese randomly, sometimes the emotions she has are simply too big to be contained in English. She blushed a bit, happy to get a compliment she usually never gets.
"You're quite pretty as well, such clear skin." She was less smooth with compliments, yet she still meant what she said, I do go to the library often, I enjoy reading up on things I didn't know before, sometimes on things I do know."
It seemed that this girl knew quite a bit about her, maybe people really did pay more attention to detail than her... "Nice to meet you, I am Esme Xiao." She heard and rolled the thought that Sere believe she was talking too much, Esme didn't think so, but she says the same thing all the time herself. "Nope, you've talked just the right amount, I seemed to have talked all the same, don't you think?" She chuckles good-naturedly.

"You speak Chinese? Woah!" Sere immediately cleared her throat after that, "I sound stupid. It's clear that you have Asian blood just like me," Sere looked at Esme and raised the corner of her lips, "But the moment you returned my compliment, I really sure that you also raised in Asian culture. It's such an Asian thing. I mean, I was taught to sincerely giving compliments to other people as much as possible by my Korean mom, even though she herself rarely praised me at home." Sere smiled, "But I'm not that good at speaking Korean. Anyway, thank you for your compliment, Esme. I also love your name--- Oh, Look! The habit of giving compliments seems to be ingrained in me!" She chuckled.
When realizes her chuckle, Sere immediately tries to back to her serious mode. It's been a long time since I showed my laugh and this girl managed to make me do it even at the first meeting. It looks like she has that hapiness potion inside her.
"I have a tendency to talk too much when I feel too happy. It comes naturally. I think we're on the same boat in this case too." Sere has no problem with people who talk too much or too little, because she is experienced being both and definitely can adjusting herself easily.
"Ah, you also like reading books. Me too! That's why you seemed so familiar. I read a lot about non-fiction books, I raised to read a lot of that in my muggle family, but I also read some of fictions." Sere put the last bite of peanut butter & jelly into her mouth, munched and swallowed it before continuing, "Do you have any preferences? Favorite genre maybe? And... Are you also raised in muggle family just like me?"

Esme smiled at Sere's reaction, glad that her language seemed interesting "Ah yes, it's my first language." She nodded. "I guess that's the way it is over there," She was referring to Asia, she then ate a bit more of her breakfast, getting a little more from the table and placing it on her plate. "Respect is always a good trait to have, but our families already instill it into us. Thank you, you know, your name reminds me of a "serenade", was that intentional, because it's the best I've ever heard someone play with words." She really thought about it, It was a wonderful idea of her parents, she admired the thought.

Sere put her arms on the table, starting to become interested in her conversation with Esme, "It seems everyone know that Sere Nade is a kind of wordplay of serenade. That's right, the meaning of my name is 'beautiful melodic song'. Even in my mom's language, Sere itself means 'the novelty that everyone is talking about'. Yeah... at least that's what my parents told me."
Sere seemed very hesitant to talk about her personal matter, so this girl summarized it in just a few sentences, "I experienced what everyone calls 'bullying', but instead of treated harsh, I experienced more like... left out... by my peers. I'm afraid to show my true self to everyone. I'm afraid of getting close and then being abandoned again in the end."
When she heard questions regarding her childhood and family, Sere again considered whether she wanted to tell the story. Should I? I love to have conversation with her. Everything felt natural and very fast as if we had known each other for a long time. But, should I? It didn't take long until she decided to tell some of her stories to Esme.
"I was born into a strict businessman family. Plus, I have Asian blood in me. You certainly know that there are some Asian families who have rules that must be obeyed excessively regarding academic achievement," Sere took a sip of water before continuing, "I belong to that kind of family. I'm not allowed to make friends with many peers, I'm not allowed to play outside the house after school hours, I have to study hard, and I'm required to be smarter than everyone."
"All my peers at my previous school left me because of that. My only friend is what we call 'olympiad' in the muggle world, kind of nationwide or worldwide level academic competition that can prove my intelligence to my parents," Sere shrugged her shoulders, "That's how it is. My parents, they're not evil, they're just strict. They said that their educating style would be useful for me in the future, but... yeah... I haven't felt the benefits yet. They allowed me to move to Hogwarts were something unexpected. This is my huge opportunity to start the new journey, just like in several adventure books that I have also read. I also love to read adventure books, but clearly not into history things."
Sere massaged the back of her neck, "Ah, I look pathetic." The girl looked into Esme's almond eyes, "I've always been curious about wizard-born too. How is it to be in such a magical family? Did your parents also go to Hogwarts? How does it feel to be here?" Sere sighed, "I guess I'm asking too much."

Esme's face was lightened when she heard Sere open up some more. Esme seemed to be a calming presence, at least she thought she was. "I'm sorry to hear that," She said in response to the news that Sere was bullied. Well, more like shunned... Nonetheless it was horrible. "Perhaps that can change now that you're here."
She took in Sere's life story, it was certainly impactful, she could imagine her parents putting her in this "olympiad" thingy...luckily for her however, this was her first real push into public education, so she had never been a part of any of that stuff. "You know, you're away from them now though, temporarily of course but still, you can have a little more air, knowing that you are technically "getting away."
"History is not too popular amongst people my age, but I always found interest in things older than me, guess that's just me though." She gave a little snicker, then let her focus fall back on Sere. "Well, my friend...if I may call you that? I think living in the wizarding world may just be a lot simpler, things are easy for us in most cases." She noticed Sere was embarrassed about asking too much. "Ask away, I actually find joy in answering questions, it's comforting to know someone is interested in me," She shrugged casually and continued. "My parents didn't go here, I was actually born in China but when I was much younger, my parents thought that it'd be a good idea to get me enrolled at Hogwarts, "better opportunities" I believe it was. I don't believe we have a big magical school in China, so to come here was a good idea. To be in a magical family is a great experience, you'll notice everyone is a little less stressed because magic makes everything easier, and yet without it, we wizard-borns tend to get bent out of shape." She sighs, that was the one flaw she dislike most about her fellow wizard-borns.

"I have the same thoughts. I really feel that the opportunity to restart everything will not come twice," Sere looked far away. I definitely need some times to accept my past. I hope that eventually I can close my old book, then open and write a new story without needing to re-read the previous one. Sere continued, "I can say that until now I feel so lucky to be here." Her heart warmed up hearing the words 'my friend' came out from Esme's mouth.
"I remember exactly what made me not really into history. All the essays I have to do from History of Magic are really serious matter for me. You won't stay here and talk to me comfortably if we are in the same class," She sighed, "It is hyperbolic, but I think I am turning into 'terrible, pathetic, wanting to give up but forced to persist' monster when it comes to history. Maybe because I was all about counting, I never got used to things related to memorization." Sere never forgets the catchphrase that 'history makes her logic stop working and start memorizing' she made herself on her first contact with the History of Magic.
Sere drinks up the water in her glass before continuing, "Woah, so you're already familiar with magic? I mean... stupid question... Of course you are, because you're wizard-born. Magic is something very new to me. I have to learn a lot of things."
She thinks for a moment before asking, "Will you teach me if we have a chance to meet again? Or maybe... Studying together? It's too bad that I understand only a bit about Transfiguration for now, but I will learn as much as I can so that I don't have to be a burden for you. Oh! Maybe you will have an opportunity to see my 'monster' side when we choose to learn History of Magic. Believe me, I won't bite... Most of the time, it's just growling." Sere has a hidden agenda to get to know about Esme more. After getting to know a little bit, it feels like Sere has hundred of things she could talk about with the Hufflepuff girl across her. She couldn't hold herself to meet Esme again in the future.

Esme looked shocked, Sere really asked for Esme to be her tutor for magic, she didn't know what to say, well...yes she did but she just couldn't contain herself, her shocked face became a wide grin, tear running down her cheek. "Why....of course, you're being serious right? like seriously serious?" She giggled, then remembered she was in public.
She looked at Sere and thought about it. Monster side...she imagined Sere sprouting fangs and being covered in fur and spikes. "Monster side? How scary...how beastly." She shrugged her shoulders. "Please don't maul me!" She says with mock fear, putting on an expression of playful fear as she waved her hands in the air.
"What in particular would you want to learn about magic, there's hundreds of things to know, I just can't contain myself!" She retains her composure and nods. "History of Magic is only boring if the teacher makes it...by the way, I've heard of some things by Muggle-borns, a phoooone, was it? What is a phoooone, what does it do? Why do non-magic folk use them? Did you have a phoooone?"
She looked on, curiously, her little face peering at Sere unblinkingly, she wondered if Sere would be her introduction into the non-magical world.
