I Paint In Vivid Shades Of Black And White
Night had consumed what was left of the bitter red halo worn by the conceited sun. It was the moons turn to shine now, and shine it did. Ornamented by clouds, it shone with a hazy luster. Stars were sprinkled across the dome of black; they held up the Goddess-Moon, as they danced.
A thin layer of snow blanketed the ground, putting the grass beneath it into a long slumber, until the spring; where it would wake up, revitalized, and new. It was quiet. It was strange. Xailah had been out many times after hours; many nights were filled with the chirping of crickets, the humming of flies, and the hooting of the lonely owls. But not tonight. Tonight it was silent, as if all the insects and small creatures of the Grounds packed up their bags and decided to go to Hawaii- or wherever small animals go.
The night creatures of the Grounds were gone- well...almost. There was a raven with feathers of an onyx black; who seemed to have missed the train ride. Fell into a sickly sweet dream for too long, only to wake up and find that everyone else left him to go to someplace warmer. Everyone except Xailah Alptraum. Who really shouldn't have been out at all. She should have been tucked away in her dorm room; for it would have saved her from bittersweet embrace of exhaustion, and of course completely collapsing from the lack of sleep. Don't worry, she does get some time to allow her mind to relax; she likes short naps whenever- or wherever, that is if she can find a nice secluded spot to do so.
In the Gryffindor girl dormitory there was a window with a loose pane. If one were to carefully slide it up, they would be able to get out of their confined space without having to wander around the dark corridors of the school. Upon exiting through the window you would find a ledge, and from there you must climb down... or jump if you didn't plan on using your legs for some time. Escape was easy- it always is. Finding a way to return is the hard part.
On this cold night Xailah was armed with an umbrella; a common object she carried around, and a small leather case that resembled an attorneys briefcase. The umbrella was open as it dragged on the powdery ground; covering any tracks she left behind in the snow. After some mindless wandering, she came to a spot where snow was nearly scarce. This said spot was upon a hill overlooking the Great Lake. It was guarded by a large tree, with branches ready to grab up anyone willing to lie in its shade.
And there she would lie- or rather sit. She propped up her umbrella; shielding herself from any snow that would want to fall on her. It blocked out the some of the cold breeze, so that was nice too. She wasn't exactly dressed warmly. Today's outfit was a soot-black top hat accessorized with a black-eye veil, a charcoal grey blouse with frill down the front, a nice pair of black pants, sleek black boots that came to the knee, a mink fur cloak of a void black that came to the middle of her back, and to complete the outfit she wore a small pair of black gloves laced with the same fur as her coat. Fancy, but not warm by any means.
Once settled, she opened her miniature briefcase, revealing a great variety of art supplies. Her glowing golden eyes swept over them briefly- so many choices. She settled with her little charcoal set. Click. The artist-case closed quietly. She made a couple of harsh strokes on a piece of cream-colored parchment. Frustration. She smudged them around with her gloved pinkie. At first there was grass. Then a few things that looked to be trees. A sooty black spot on the paper was a lake- or maybe a rock....who knows. Xailah didn't, the only thing that she knew was that she was angry. Her face did not express this, but the dark lines on the paper did. She stopped what she was doing for a second and looked down at her drawing. It was a illustration of a perfect world. Black and white. No harsh reality, no catches, no right, and no wrong. In big bold letters she wrote PERFECT across the paper. For a brief second there was a feeling of relief- but that didn't last long, for it was quickly followed with dissatisfaction. Her brows knitted together as she drew a big X across the page. She crumpled the parchment and then buried it underneath the new snow. As if nothing happened she pulled out another parchment from her case, and continued the same process as before.

The sudden urge to go outside struck. No, not just to explore, but the urge to discover something new. Rosalyn's sketchbook was only filled with drawings during the day, the repetition made her bored. The moon was especially bright tonight, and it's light seemed to be screaming out for someone. However, something fault odd at the moment. The clock in the dorm. It's ticking was a nuisance. A distraction from the show that was the moon's light. She had to escape. Her will was so mighty that God himself would fall before her.
The Ravenclaw dormitory was not one that could easily be left. It's tower was high, a reflection of both it's mascot and it's status. This dorm was not one that could be escaped by window. Unless one thought of never living again. However, the exit of the tower isn't as secured as the other dormitories due to the reputation of Ravenclaws. This was a risk Rosalyn was willing to take. Her mind couldn't bear to miss this opportunity. The curiosity was driving her to explore. Thus, she began her night trip.
Managing to find her way outside was fairly easy. The corridors were rather dark, but Rosalyn's gift was more than perfect for this. Rosalyn had been diagnosed with Hyperthymesia Syndrome as a kid. Otherwise known as the syndrome of remembering everything. With this gift, she had memorized the exact layout of the entire school. The only thing that could stop her is the off chance that she bumps into a teacher, or a house elf. However, Rosalyn calculated the chances of that happening, and it was slim to none. Rosalyn was not one to take chances, and she made sure to lower the chances of being caught. Each individual step took about five seconds, and made no sound. Slowly but surely, Rosalyn made it outside.
It was fairly cold, but it didn't bother Rosalyn at all. She was in her sweatpants with a thin t-shirt on. If she never been raised in London her arms would most likely have turned into icicles. She held her sketchbook, and pencil close to her side. She made sure to not let any snow falling from the sky would ruin them. It would be a waste to have come outside for nothing. She began to walk through the snow. It was thin, but thick enough to make noise when stepped on. However, Rosalyn didn't worry about being overly quiet since she was outside, but she was still slightly cautious.
Rosalyn rook notice of how beautiful the grounds were at night with the moon's light beaming over the surrounding area. Most importantly though, she noticed how quiet is was. In fact, it was strangely quiet. Normally crickets would be chirping, owls would be hooting, and wolves would be howling. That was not the case. For what reason was this though? Could it have been the moon? Maybe there was something special about tonight which urged Rosalyn to escape the shackles of the dormitory. These thoughts made her heart raced. There was no moment that could be prove to be any more satisfying to her than this. She looked around eagerly, wondering what it is that would take over the repetitive drawings in her sketchbook. With a turn of her head, she found what she was looking for on top of a hill.
Rosalyn wasn't sure what had bestowed itself upon her eyes. It was like a goddess. The moon light shown on the figure upon the hill. Rosalyn began to instantly draw the scenery. A girl sitting with a beautiful outfit, as the moon was pointing its spotlight in her. The goddess of the moon. It didn't take long for Rosalyn to finish. A euphoric sensation filled her up to the brim. She craved to draw the figure more. Thus she began to move up the hill.
Rosalyn now got a closer look at the girl's outfit. It was beautiful from a far, but it was breath-taking when given a closer look. She was a about half way up the hill, and stopped. She didn't want to scare the girl, even with the chance that she was a goddess. Rosalyn began adding the small details of the girl's clothes onto the drawing. The grey blouse was stunning, and the black top-hat and veil added even more flavor to it. Rosalyn added the small details onto the drawing. It was perfect. It was something new, something interesting. Her previous drawings were just random sketches of nature, but this seemed supernatural.
A new urge had hit Rosalyn. She wanted to draw a portrait of the girl, but she tried to resist this. She didn't know how to approach the figure, and what if they happened to be a professor. Why else would they be outside? However, Rosalyn noticed the girl crumple something up. A paper. A closer glance showed hand movements of an artist. This sealed the deal for Rosalyn. Her curiosity was once again taking her over. It was clawing and scratching it's way up from the far back crevices of her mind. Thus, she began to move even further up the hill, the sounds of snow being stepped on could be heard.

On the new parchment Xailah began to do some mindless doodling. Dark lines covered the page; eventually they began to pull themselves together, to form the majestic form of a horse. But then horse began to shrink in size, it sprouted a pair of bat wings, and its skin became taut against the creatures fragile bones. It was no longer a horse, it was now a Thestral. You and I, we're freaks of nature. This echoed in the back of her mind.
She contemplated throwing this drawing out, like she did with the other one, but she later decided to keep it; tucking it inside her little art-kit with great care. A sudden rustle of the companion-less raven, pulled Xailah back to reality.
There was then a strange, yet familiar feeling of someone- or something watching her. It was like they were trying to burn holes into her with their eyes. Her own pupils grew into round little orbs, and shrank back into eerie cat-like slits; little alarm bells were going off in a far corner of her mind. Curiosity quickly took the reigns though, causing her to look around to find her spectator. Her eyes fell upon an angel in white- a child born from the snow itself.
Xailah rose to her feet, and took a step towards the figure. Her eyes dilated; her iris becoming a small golden ring around a black pupil. She took in some of the figures features, stunning white hair and eyes of a beautiful shade of crimson. There was the sudden realization that she and this figure were similar...they were different. But what if they were dangerous, would they tell a staff member that she was out after curfew? This thought echoed itself back into her mind. There was only one way to be sure. "Before you come any closer tell me,...should I start running?" The question was strange, which probably meant that the answer was not a simple yes, or no.

Slowly, but surely, she made way up the hill. As Rosalyn was getting closer and closer, the girl began looking around. Then, their faces met. She stopped. Stood a good distance away from the girl, but close enough that a normal conversation could be held. The girl stood before Rosalyn. She had a better view of the girl's outfit. Seemed quite fancy with the mink fur, however, nothing the girl had on was school attire. Well, neither was anything Rosalyn was in. It did happen to be night.... There would be no reason for them to wear their school attire.
Rosalyn started focusing her attention on the stranger's face. The veil somewhat covering their eyes, but none the less those golden eyes were attracting Rosalyn's attention. She stared deep into her pupils. A stare strong enough that even the sun would back down from it's glare. Rosalyn was searching, for something. Although, she only did this to test something. Rosalyn had read in a book that you can learn about people just by their eyes. You could also potentially read their minds. She would stare for a good few seconds, but then the girl spoke.
Her question was quite, peculiar. Rosalyn tiled her head to the side, slightly confused. She wasn't sure what to make of the girl's question. Her eyes would slowly jolt to each side of her eye sockets as she though. "Unclear. Another question should suffice." she thought. Rosalyn's soft, slightly red lips would open, letting out a breath first before speaking. Then, she replied."Running? For what? From what? Rosalyn's voice was as monotone and lack-luster as always. She had the inability to express emotion in her speech. At least, purposely. The way she spoke generally scared people. She was curious to see the girl's reaction.
Rosalyn then began to look around, attempting to figure out what exactly would compel the girl to ask such a bizarre question. Her thoughts would begin with why the girl would start off with that question. "Did they not know how to start conversations? Were they talking to themselves? Maybe to someone else? Was there something around to run from?" Each question she asked herself would slowly expand her curiosity.

Her eyes locked with the other girls red ones. She scanned her face quickly looking for any sign of shock, surprise, or even fear- she found none. The girls head tilted to the side. Xailah subconsciously mirrored the motion, and raised an eyebrow. Imitation was one of the ways Xailah would gain information; one would make a motion or a facial expression that she found unclear, so she would imitate the person of interest. It had become more of a habit now. The snowy-haired child spoke in a bland- seemingly mechanical voice. In a strange way it was refreshing; all, or most of the children at Hogwarts always spoke as if they didn't have a care in the world- they were all little happy-go-lucky robots...well, at least the Hufflepuffs were.
"So what brings you out here? A need to escape? Can't sleep? A unquenchable thirst to explore?" A book that the girl was holding, caught Xailahs eye. She then turned her back on the child, and returned to the spot where she was previously sitting. She motioned for the girl to join her. "Do you draw or write?" She said pointing to the book.
Xailah exhaled, letting out a small puff of fog. She pinned her veil away from her face, securing it with a bobby-pin to the brim of her hat, as she spoke. "I apologize. The question was a silly little test, to see if you were in any way a threat to me- I expected you to answer with a yes, or a no. You answered with neither. Instead of going for the obvious, you went a separate route." Her eyes narrowed at the girl. "So that means you are either very smart, or you know how to think outside of the box. Or perhaps both, and if that is the case then it would not be wise for me to run." Xailah tugged her cloak closer to her neck, the soft fur brushing against her seemingly unpigmented skin."Running? For what? From what?"

The girl's face was more clear when she moved her veil. It was strange to see another person with an odd eye color. Here was a girl with crimson red orbs, meeting a similar person with gold. She was already a little comfortable before, but she felt even more comfortable right now. Her skin was pale as well. So pale in fact it rivals Rosalyn's paleness. She forced another laser-focused stare into the girl's eyes as she spoke.
A test.... but a separate route? she said to herself. The girl seemed to give a somewhat fierce look as she spoke again. A strange person quite frankly. While her observation wasn't technically wrong, Rosalyn was confused as to what intelligence had to do with her answer. She tilted her head once again, and her stare softened. "Did I happen to say something different? No, I believe my answer was clear. Ah, confusion maybe. She straightened her head, and placed her fiery stare onto the girl's eyes once again. "While I am intelligent according to others, I believe you are mistaken on something. I should be specific in that my answer to your question before, was merely a question out of confusion. I believe I didn't have the intent to go 'a separate route' when I came up with my answer, unless I subconsciously made that decision." She ended her stare and let out big breath. She didn't enjoy talking much, and tried to keep things brief. However, a longer explanation was needed for this situation.
Rosalyn took quick notice to the girl pulling her cloak in closer. She assumed she was cold. It did happen to be snowing, the only other idea that could be thought of was that she was concealing a weapon. However, who would hold a weapon next to their own neck? She threw these thoughts out immediately, and listened once again as the girl spoke.
All of her assumptions seemed to be correct, but the latter was more accurate. She did have a strong desire to explore. Rosalyn wouldn't be outside if she didn't. "Desire to explore." Short and brief, just like she likes it. She watched carefully as the girl turned around, and sat down. She was comfortable, but still cautious. Motioned to come sit. A risky offer indeed, but she couldn't sense any hostility coming from the girl.
Sitting down, the girl asked yet another question. However, it didn't require a long answer. "Drawing." She opened her notebook, and flipped through the pages. Stopping closer to the book to show some of her more recent work.

She was pleased to find another adventurous soul like hers- well at least when it came to exploration. Xailah let herself sink into the tree, that towered above the two children. The girl soon replied to Xailahs question with a simple answer.
"Do they have any meaning?" She paused for a second before adding- "I know that some people make art to reflect how they were feeling at a certain moment in time." She pushed up her glasses. "That one is my favorite." She said pointing to a sketch of a skeletal body, with nightmarish figures swarming out of its mouth. It was different- dare she say perfect. All the sketches were perfect- grey scale as the world should have been- but what made the pictures of the demons stand out from the others, was the fact that the image came straight from the imagination. The other ones were still very good, but they were all still lifes. The demon-picture had the potential to become a functioning being- if its creator wished it to be.
Xailah nodded nonchalantly. The girl flipped her notebook open with, one fluent motion. "Let me take a look-see." She said in a nearly inaudible whisper. Her eyes traced over every line, and every detail; in an attempt to absorb as much useful information as possible. The girl was good, Xailah knew she could learn from her, and improve her own works."Drawing."

Personally when it comes to art I'm not picky. I like to see what other people draw, paint, etc... It can give you a different view on things. That being said we are our own biggest critics, but the great thing about that, is that we make ourselves aware of the fact that there will always be room to improve. Your renditions are most likely not bad, I'm assuming that they didn't come out exactly like the original pictures- meaning you made them your own, which is great, and to some extent it makes the work original. -And lets face it, we need more originality in the world.

"Do they have any meaning?"
A somewhat unexpected question, mostly due to the lack of an answer. She wasn't sure if her drawings had any meaning. She would mostly draw based on what she saw, or she would try and create a drawing based on imagination. However, her imagination drawings would usually stem from books; creating her own visual representation of what she reads. Before asking for clarification, the stranger added to their question.
The extra information didn't seem to help out with Rosalyn's process of coming up with an answer. She never really drew something based on her emotions. If drawing something she saw, she would draw it exactly as it looked. Even her more abstract drawings were drawn from the exact words of a book or novel. The girl seemed to continue again; pointing at one of the more lower quality drawings, at least, in Rosalyn's opinion. It was a drawing based on an event that happened in a fantasy book she read. Where a demon was spewing out spirits. Rosalyn blinked somewhat hard one time, realizing she was getting off track with her thoughts. She turned toward the girl and stared into her eyes; prepared to reply.
"I believe there is no meaning. My drawings don't reflect my feelings, at least, to my understanding they don't. However, there is a strange feeling I feel when I find something interesting to draw, but I usually continue to draw the object or scenery as exact as possible based on the information given." She let out a large breath right after she finished speaking. Rosalyn wasn't a fan of long stretches of speech, she tried to keep things short and precise. It doesn't help that much that she tries to speak in one breath either. Rosalyn put her attention back onto the demon drawing. "What caught her interest?"

Xailah listened intently, waiting for the girl to take a breath, and when the girl finally did; Xailah flinched away ever so slightly. She blinked once in a dumbfounded way, and cocked her head. "Ah- I see. Some of your works would be considered rather dark in nature, so I thought they might have resulted from negative emotions," She rolled her eyes; feeling that she was looking too deeply into the images "Sorry, I like to over analyze things...It's not one of my best qualities." She looked down, with a furrowed brow and plucked a dead piece of grass out of its cold grave."I believe there is no meaning. My drawings don't reflect my feelings, at least, to my understanding they don't. However, there is a strange feeling I feel when I find something interesting to draw, but I usually continue to draw the object or scenery as exact as possible based on the information given."
Clearing her throat she added; "...So what was the inspiration for your demon sketch? I imagine you didn't physically see the demon- so I assume inspiration sprouted from another drawing, or maybe a piece of literature." The blade of grass danced between her gloved fingers. "I hope you don't mind my curiosity. I realize that I tend to ask a lot of questions," She let out a puff of cold air before continuing, "It's just that, have a strong thirst for knowledge- ya know?" She then held the palm of her hand open, and watched the blade of grass lay there motionless- until another cold breeze came to take it away. She was vaguely aware of the fact, that she was slowly opening up to this stranger- which was very uncommon, and she didn't like it. Not one bit. But maybe it was a good thing, maybe it would help her grow as an individual.

OOC: If it’s an open thread, I can join, right?
Sneaking out in the dead of night. That could almost absolutely mean detention. But not that this Slytherin cared. She wanted to go outside, and so she would.
The Slytherin dormitory was underground, making it even harder for Koko to leave than she had previously thought. It had required some climbing, some sneaking, and some blending into her surroundings and wanting to hex anyone who came near. She’d brought her sketchbook, which she neve went without, and a set of pencils. She treaded over the snow-covered grass, searching for something to do and hoping that her escape was of no waste. If it had been in vain, and if she got a detention, that was her fault.
Not far from the castle, Koko spotted two girls conversing upon a hill. It seemed that they were both artists, and of that she was glad. Being an artist herself, and holding her art materials, she made her way closer to the moonlit hill.
The moonlight shone down on one of the girls in a way that was more than beautiful. The outfit she wore struck Koko speechless—not that she had anything to say, anyway. That veil... and her eyes were about the same shade as Koko’s own—a bright, vibrant gold. Now, while kokos eyes were labeled as hazel, they usually shone gold. Most found it creepy, but Koko’s only friend from before Hogwarts had found it beautiful. God, she missed him.
While the one girl wore an amazing outfit, Koko wore a red shirt that showed just a tiny bit of the small amount of cleavage she’d developed by age eleven. Her hair was down but combed, with a large red bow resting atop the crown of her head. She wore black and silver combat boots and a pair of black leggings to go with the outfit, and while she looked great she looked nowhere near as stunning as the other girl with the veil. Now, Koko noticed, there was another girl sitting on the hill. This other girl may not have had a stunning outfit, but she had breathtaking features compared to Koko’s caramel colored hair. ”Oh... hello,” Koko said finally walking up to them. ”Mind if I join you here on this soundless... or at least it was soundless.... well, on this almost-soundless night?” she probably sounded like a dork. A total dork. And perhaps also an artist, which she was.
She sat down, but not before brushing the snow off of the place where she would relax. It was truly beautiful here, she thought, and she took out her sketchbook and supplies without waiting for a reply.
