mid-morning, history of magic
@Henry Reed

It was plenty before the class was supposed to begin, but Finley had grown a wonderful newfound habit of getting to her classes early, especially when she wasn't racing to help another student with an errand, usually the weak Daniel Weaver. She felt sorry for him, since he was so constantly troubled. People like him reminded her of her little sister, little but very needy. Daniel must have been a baby in a pre-teen's body!

Satisfied with this conclusion, Finley smiled to herself as she placed her books down, eyeing the clock and then giving a wave to the Professor and the other students in the room, some holding a makeshift study session, and others just chattering about the daily gossip, which was the very last thing Finley was interested in. She would rather have a sane conversation rather than one ridden with humiliating rumours.

Brushing her wisps behind her ears, she took a seat as the door shut with a thud, revealing another familiar boy. She recognized him from many places, and Finley had always sat at the direct center of the classroom, making sure she could eye every single student. However, that boy stood out. Why had it been December when she finally had the nerve to talk to him?

Once he entered the room, she waved at him. "Hi!" Her voice rang through the room, much louder than she intended. Fighting off the strange stares, she patted the desk behind her, silently asking the enigmatic boy to sit behind her.

History of Magic was one of Henry’s good subjects, according to his report card, which may be because he always seemed to get there early. Now, that doesn’t mean to say he didn’t get to other classes on time but it was this one that he was early. This meant he could reread through the information of last lessons topic, or make sure his homework was done correctly.

Despite not believing that he was smart enough to be in Ravenclaw, it did sort of make sense to him because he valued the skill of learning new things and finding solutions to the most bizarre of problems. Though, this made him seem a bit nerdy so he stuck to his shrugging when asked why he was in Ravenclaw if he wasn’t smart.

As he entered the classroom, a hand in his fringe to fix a particularly stubborn piece of hair that kept flicking up, he glanced around the usual early birds in the room. Henry usually sat at the back in the corner, with no table buddy as there was an odd amount of people in the class meaning that since nobody had to sit next to him, nobody did.

He raised an eyebrow at the female, who he was certain was in a few of his Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff classes (like this one!) yet could never tell you the slightest thing about her, and glanced behind him to ensure that she was indeed motioning to him. Blinking rather dumbly, he’d shuffle towards her and stand by the empty seat.

Due to a particular lack of others who just entered the room, I presume you mean me? If so..” He then sat down next to her, leaving his bag on his shoulder in case he did have to move.

At first, Finley was entranced by the boy; just the way he walked had some strange sort of haughtiness to him. The young Hufflepuff had never seen any aliens like that breed before! Every time he strolled to that desk of his, he had himself caught up in something, whether it be his hair or even a bug in the sky - after all, those distracted the bloody hell out of Finley. If one thing was awry, she would notice it.

She resisted chuckling when this gentleman raised his eyebrow at her. It was a...unique move, to say, but she decided to mirror his action with a slight shoulder shrug. Maybe that was the way to a Ravenclaw's friendship. This rare breed had sat in the back of the classroom where no one could touch him, so maybe he was a little fragile. Scanning all these over in her mind, she conceded that helping him break out of his shell would maybe go over well. "Of course! There's not a lot of others in here anyways!" Presume? Who in Merlin's name used the word presume in casual conversation, besides maybe Lear?

Finley blew the wisps out of her face, crossed her legs, and turned around in her chair. "Come, sit down, stay a while," she urged, peeking over at his pack. "Anything interesting...or...u-nique in there?" Her voice held the U a little longer than the other syllable.

Adjusting how he sat so he could face the female, he'd tilt his head at her. He was still trying to place a name to the face, which was something that happened often since whilst Henry had a photographic memory, it was ony what he saw, not heard. Names weren't something that came to him often. Once he was comfy with one leg over the other, his hands resting on them, he'd reply.

"The most interesting and unique things I have in this bag are homework, some pens and a packet of marshmallows." He'd allow the corner of his lip to quirk up into a small smile as he looked to her. He was a typically friendly boy but he could be reserved and guarded. Perhaps this was because he was an overly sensitive soul who was prone to getting overwhelmed. None the less, this girl reminded him of his older sister, inviting and certainly breaking the mould. He liked her, so far.

"I'm Henry. Most people just call me Reed, though. And you are?"

With every passing moment, Finley grew more entranced in this boy. Just the way he spoke sounded like the wizards of old, meant for wise protagonists to come along and heed some strange yet pertinent advice. It was like he spoke in some sort of verse that she understood! Even his movements were precise: the tilts of his head, the raises of his eyebrow, and even the way he sat down behind her. It was as if the two had reversed roles, this boy sitting with his legs crossed like a little lady, and this prim and proper girl sitting like some sort of grade-school principal. Upon noticing this subtle detail, Finley quickly rotated the chair instead of herself, after being warned about it many times.

"M...Marshmallows? You have Marshmallows?" Sticky, gooey, and yet tasty and sugary, marshmallows were a love-hate relationship for Finley. They had the potential for terrible pranks, yet she loved taking a bite of them. They were just so fluffy, genuine and...good. Her gut screamed at her not to ask for one from this...un-boyish boy, but they sounded too wonderful to not ask. After all, her back was to the teacher...she wouldn't notice, would she? "May I have one of those marshmallows?" She accidentally interrupted him and bit her lip. "Oh. Sorry about that, Henry...is it 'kay if I call you that?" She reached out her hand, blushing a little. "I'm Finley McGill. Go by Finley. Or...fish-girl, or really anything you want to call me."

A bemused smile was sat on Henry’s face as he watched the girl. It was getting harder to figure out why he hadn’t met her before. She seemed really friendly and Henry wasn’t the type to shy away from social situations, even if he preferred being alone. Must have just been timing, he thought.

It was her interest of marshmallows that made his eyes narrow. She spoke of them as if they were some rare food that isn’t at the disposal of anyone who walks into the closest muggle corner shop. His family had sent him a parcel full of classic sweets as he was still figuring out what he liked in terms of the wizarding ones. Smarties, skittles, marshmallows and midget gems were among the bunch that he received. Maybe he’d offer the girl some of them too, they could make it a revision and snacking session.

Sure. There might be more white than pink, because even though I know they taste exactly the same, I still think the pink taste better.” He’d rummage into his bag, pulling out the half eaten bag and placing it on the desk to push towards her.
Have them, if you want. I have another bag in my dorm.”

Henry was rather curious as what her reaction to that would be, as they were still in a classroom environment where eating was probably not allowed.

Don’t apologise- it’s fine. Henry’s fine too, it is my given name after all. Finley. That’s unique. I presume that’s alright to call you since you introduced yourself at it. I’ll never understand everyone’s need here to call each other by last names.
