Dinner in the Dark

The Slytherin graduate was sitting at the professor's table in the Great Hall in a far corner from the usual occupied places. The chairs around him empty, as he had decided to eat his dinner later. The house elves were kind enough to warm up the dished for him once again and this was not a special occurance. The ginger would frequently miss the usual eating hours on purpose to have his peace when eating. Without the kids present or at least without most of them. Their voices sometimes got so loud that he could not swallow a bite of his food without developing a headache, because of all the side noises. Thurston's ears were more sensitive, enhightened from the all the time he spend in the wild world fending for himself. He had to adapt, he would have died instead. This is just a normal occurance that happened to one, if they went through similar stuff. Survival of the fittest and to survive he had to adapt and he did.
The young man sat in the hall, slowly eating the food on the filled plate in front of him. The steam of the red meat raising upwards as some basic mashed potatoes were the side dish along with some greens. Nothing special, the man had no extra wishes for the house elves. He would not ask them for cookies, he could not understand how others could eat so much sugar without feeling the nausea raising. Alone thinking about it made his stomach twist. He stopped eating for a second and looked around in the empty great hall. No student was here as it was past curfew and only the softly shimmering lights could tell that someone was currently in here. Hopefully no one would notice though, He did not want to socialize. A sigh escaped his lips as he raised the fork to his lips again, eating another slice of the steak with some mash.
Food was not a pleasure for him, it was something to fuel his body. A tool one might say. When he lived in the forest he could not eat just because he wanted to. He ate when he needed nourishment and concentrated on more important stuff when he was not hungry. With times it mattered less how food tasted, if it was especially tasty or just functional. Tasty food often took time and preparation while other foods took less time. He shook his head and stared at his plate. This was something he would rarely eat, often too expensive and he himself had no reason to make a mash. He could boil and cook over a fireplace but other than that he was kind of limited in his ways of getting food.
He had learned to appreciate less and it had been weird and difficult. It took time to adjust from a prestigous life to a life where you are alone. But in the end he did not regret it, if only he grew with the experience.

Dinner in the Dark

Time was slipping away, seemingly accelerating at an exponential rate as the quill scribbled on the paper. Aoi had pulled what was likely an unpopular move with the students. A return from break quiz and a spontaneous one at that. A little prod into their developing mind to see what had been retained. After all, she was aware of how tedious and dull her subject was to no doubt most of the student body. When it truly came down to it, there was little motivation to master the History of Magic, as very few careers required the knowledge. It was her job to convey the importance of history. To avoid the mistakes of the past. To even create the possibility that they as a people could do so. And so she had found herself grading those very same quizzes late into the evening. It was worth it in the end though, to improve not only these young minds but to know she made a lasting mark in the world.
Suddenly she felt a familiar rumble as her stomach released a growl. How distressing. Aoi realized that she hadn’t eaten all day, lost in the fervor of grading. She didn’t need to see outside to know how late it had become. She already had to make a journey to the dungeon to turn in, why not stop in the Great Hall and grab a quick bite to eat? She often found missing the cuisine of her home, but British fare wasn’t so bad. Nothing compared to the foods of childhood. There were bound to be leftovers from dinner. She could likely get something to eat, get something in her body. No doubt it would be a lonely meal, and Aoi’s need for social interaction was hardly met with the influx of work which comes paired with establishing oneself in a new position.
The woman made her way to the Great Hall with little time wasted, strolling in casually, trying to decide on her chosen meal. Perhaps her absent mind pondering dinner possibilities was why she didn’t notice the Astronomy Professor silently eating by himself at a nearby table. She had nearly walked right past him when her senses kicked in, alerting her to his presence. How careless of her. She started with a sudden jolt, caught off guard. She recovered quickly though, so much so that her jolt was barely perceptible. Who would’ve guessed there would be a chance for socialization this late at night.
Aoi wasn’t naive. The Astronomy Professor was quite reclusive as is, and she hardly entertained the idea that he even wanted to socialize. That wouldn’t stop her from trying though. She turned to face the man, a smile crossing her face. “Good Evening Professor Barclay. How are you this evening? You gave me quite the fright.”

Sometimes, making the wrong choice is better than making no choice. You have the courage to go forward, that is rare.

The young man sat there and he was indeed alone for a while, but not long enough for his taste. Why would someone else go to the Great Hall this late? He looked up from his plate, when he heard the voice of someone else. He knew her voice as she was quite a talkative one or so it seems. He leaned back in his seat and took a look at the women, his fork hovering mid-air, ready to dive into the food. He just looked at her for a moment, before a sigh escaped his mouth. It was just his luck that she was the one to find him here, he was sure if it was Griffith they could have just sat in silence without bothering with all the communication and everything that makes you seem social.
"Good evening, Professor- ...Risa", he greeted her back and placed the fork that he was still holding in his hand next to his plate. He gave her a fright? Shouldn't he the one to be startled but he was not? This was stupid to put the blame on him therefore he did not comment on this part of her confrontation. "It was a quiet evening before you joined me at the table-", he stated thoughtfully. Was that too rude?, he wondered but did not take it back. Why should he care anyway?
Thurston usually preferred quiet evenings but it seemed that today was against him, since he could not even eat his food in peace without being interrupted by a fellow professor, who on top was a social butterfly. He always wondered if people like her would just talk with anyone or if they purposefully chose the less social personalities to get them to socialize. He really hoped he could continue eating in peace without having to talk much, but it seemed his wish was unheard.

Naive she was not. It was all too painfully obvious that Professor Barclay was uninterested in a conversation and she was all too unsure whether she should push for one. And yet… he had replied. Out of courtesy? Habit? Obligation? It was difficult to pinpoint the exact reason, but it was an opening and Aoi didn’t like to pass up opportunities. And though it may have been quiet, this was such a chance to attempt to understand the mostly introverted professor.
“I must apologize, if I’m disturbing you I shall be on my way. I simply came down here to find nourishment and thought to at least try to interact with a co-professor.” She made sure to make eye contact as she spoke. “Though if you don’t mind at least a moment of your time, might I ask you for recommendations on the fare? I’ve been meaning to try something new or different.” It was more of an offhand remark, with intent to pull him into a conversation of his interests instead of hers. If this didn’t work, she would simply pull away, retrieve her nourishment, and be on her way. Something in her told her she’d find a way to understand the enigmatic man.
