Hogwarts was getting far too loud as the holidays crept closer. That was, more or less, Daniel’s opinion of the eager way people talked. Loud voices carried even in the emptiest hallways. The boy couldn’t get a break. It was amazing that even though the hallway only had maybe five people in it, it still felt like a concert hall. The Slytherin was becoming quickly annoyed. He wondered if he could weedle Professor Seaborne or Professor Jensen into teaching him the muffling spell. Perhaps that would work better. Maybe he could figure out how to mute the whole stupid castle.
Frustration crept across his face. Between classes was the worst - thankfully, classes were over. There was a few hours before dinner, and Daniel just… he needed a few minutes. Taking a seat on the floor and against the wall, the Slytherin let himself sit there and breathe. The people seemed to disappear. Of course, that wasn’t like other people didn’t come through. Dan let his head lean back against the wall and breathed out slowly, attempting to just feel. The stone. The way his breath hitched. Everything was just so overwhelming.
“Okay, time to get up and going,” he mused to himself. He took another breath and pushed himself up to his feet. He was so lost in thought that he had unconsciously (or more by accident) pushed himself into someone else. His nose wrinkled. Whoever he just hit was walking way too close to the wall, and was clearly not paying attention to him - the fact that he was sitting on the floor in the corridor. He huffed in irritation and shuffled out of the way, enough to give some space.
“I’ll apologize for hitting you, but it’s also your fault for… not paying attention, I guess,” the Slytherin pointed out. His words sounded harsh, but the tone of voice was gentle. He just wasn’t in the mood. He wasn’t out to make enemies; he just wanted to find a quiet spot.
Suffice to say, the library was on his to go to places.

The festivities of the upcoming holidays had been incredibly infectious, and Dinara was no exception to the holiday cheer that had been going around the Hogwarts students. Her mood had been much better than usual (if that was even possible) -- and so had her appetite. The young fireball had been looking forward to writing a few Christmas cards before heading to dinner -- and she was very much motivated by the promise of a grand feast to finally finish the last of the cards that she had planned to mail out to her family back home.
Chattering echoed down the relatively empty hallway, and Dinara flashed a bright smile at a small trio of Ravenclaws that had been excitedly discussing their upcoming trip to Hogsmeade. Dinara hadn't heard much of it yet, but she knew it was something that she was anticipating eagerly in her upcoming years at Hogwarts.
Lost in thought, the young lass had been dreamily wandering down the narrow corridor, absent-mindedly humming to herself and running her hand along the textured walls. Dreams of Christmas feasts and parties flooded her mind as she skipped merrily along until...
SPLAT.
The lass fell on her knees after tripping over something. Or rather, someone. Rubbing her sore knees, she looked up; matching the voice that issued the unreluctant apology to the face of a young Slytherin boy. Smiling brightly, she shook her head, though she did raise an eyebrow at the boy's seemingly reluctance to apologise.
"Well, that's quite alright. I could've been paying more attention myself. It's kinda weird that you'd be sitting alone in the middle of a corridor, though! You do meet all kinds of people in the wizarding world!"
The girl was as direct as ever. Her words bore no malice whatsoever, though to someone more sensitive one would suppose that they would take what she had in the wrong way. To be honest, the last sentence was more of a musing statement on the girl's part than a way to passive-aggressively insult the boy. Dinara simply had a tendency to do just that -- her thoughts flowed from her mouth without much filter nor second-thought.
Getting back up on her feet, Dinara stuck out a small hand that was half concealed by her oversized robes. "Name's Dinara. Dinara Lucey. I hope you weren't hurt or anything!" Her voice chirped out, clear and bright; not entirely unlike that of a bluebird's song on a Spring day. A small smile etched on her face, the girl's brown eyes watched the boy's striking aquamarine ones, waiting for a reaction.

If there was anything that Daniel knew, it was the fact that every girl, no matter the age or house, was annoying. Daniel’s fingers danced over the fabric of his robes as he watched her. He wasn’t in the middle of the corridor, so he wasn’t really in the way. There wasn’t any particular reason why he had to apologize. He said what he did and was about ready to walk off when she started… talking. Going on and on about why he was there in the middle and - Daniel’s eyebrows creased. Annoyance couldn’t help but transverse his face. Girls were dumb. Everyone at Hogwarts had proven themselves equally as stupid. Daniel liked learning about magic and controlling what he had, but there had been only a small handful of people who didn’t make him annoyed.
“I wasn’t in the middle of the corridor. I was against the wall. Weren’t you paying enough attention to know that?” he said, almost rather accusingly. He wasn’t someone dense like Luna Lovegood - he read in a history book or something that she was rather notorious for being different. Daniel walked to his own beating drum, but he didn’t put himself in the way to making people think he was different or weird. That wasn’t what he was about. He didn’t really even care about her last comment; most people were unique and different.
His eyes narrowed as her hand somehow escaped her oversized robes, and the boy wondered if she was just wearing hand me downs. He eyed her hand and then turned them up towards her as she introduced herself. He wouldn’t take the handshake; he wasn’t fond of people being in his physical space whether invited or not; he wasn’t really trying to be rude. Things were… that was just how Daniel was. He clicked his tongue a little and shoved his hands in his pockets, obviously not interested in taking the proffered hand.
“Daniel. I’m fine, thanks for asking,” he said simply. He wasn’t much of a conversation person, so he didn’t offer anything besides that. Not that he was being rude or anything; the Slytherin didn’t particularly care for small talk, and wasn’t about to offer it up just to keep a conversation going.

Dinara had grown up with a fairly small community of people who shared similar ideas and traditions. Of which involved not caring much about the gender stereotypes; it was simple back in Dinara's small town -- you stuck with who you liked, regardless of gender, race or income. It seemed to be different here at Hogwarts, though, people seemed to choose their associations very carefully. Frankly, she couldn't care less about birthrights or anything, what mattered most was that she enjoyed being around the person.
Raising an eyebrow at the boy's less than friendly tone, she looked down at where he was seated and then back up at him. "You were seated between the two walls, weren't you? That's technically in the middle!" She scratched her head rather thoughtfully. Most people would've taken her statement as some kind of a taunt, yet Dinara truly meant it as a factual statement. The girl hardly had any ill-intent when it comes to conversing with people, but many of her statements can be easily misinterpreted to be so. "Even if you were against the wall, it's still something that's odd, ain't it?"
The blonde had the nerve to turn down Dinara's handshake, with a click of his tongue no less! Manners and basic courtesy were concepts that the Luceys had emphasised upon as they raised their three children. Slightly taken aback, Dinara comforted herself with the thought that perhaps Wizardkind had different customs than that of the Muggle world. Grabbing her outstretched hand with the other awkwardly and shaking it, Dinara nodded approvingly at her own (subpar) demonstration. "This is a handshake. We do it when we introduce ourselves in the Muggle world!"
Feeling proud of her own explanation, she once again turned her gaze back to the boy's own, her hand still outstretched. Adopting a tone that was infuriatingly patient, Dinara started with her introduction once more, a bright smile plastered on her face. "Now, let's try this again. Hi Daniel, it's very nice to meet you."

The Slytherin rose an eyebrow as the loud, annoying Hufflepuff claimed he was in the middle, just because he was between the two walls. Didn’t this girl know the basic definition of ‘middle’? Daniel struggled to swallow the words he wanted to say. A knack of constant curiosity burned within him, and that threatened to come out right now. Then, she was going on about how it was odd he was sitting there anyway. Yeah, well, it was odd that she had clothes way too big for her. It made her look like a ragamuffin, in his opinion, but at least he kept it to himself. His mind wandered towards the other Hufflepuff he spoke to - the one at the Quidditch field. Why were all Hufflepuffs stupid?
Despite this, the boy held himself back from speaking out. At least, partially. When the girl held her hand out again, despite Daniel’s obvious attempt to not touch her, she went on about what it was. It was more amusing that she shook her own hand to demonstrate what he was supposed to do. “Yes, we have them in the magical world as well, but I don’t feel like shaking a hand with someone. Who knows if you wash your hands after you use the toilets,” the eleven year old said simply. He made a face and purposely stuck his hands inside the pockets hidden in his robes.
It was a clear I am not shaking your hand move.
But he didn’t lack social etiquette, just lacked the care of touching others. That was his personal opinion, and if she had an issue with it, well, it wasn’t his problem.
Reluctantly, and mostly because he really isn’t that much of a jerk, the Slytherin replied with a simple, “You, as well.” Few words from a boy who never spoke, but at least he was being semi-polite.
