A Cool, Refreshing Day
The cool weather in September provided an excellent excuse for George to bring out his Autumn colors - he did not fancy them as much as his Summer wardrobe, but they suited him much better. Perhaps it was a good thing he was given Hufflepuff, from a fashion standpoint. He was wrapped up in an oversized sweater in his house colors, legs clad in dark pants and a pair of big, sturdy, surprisingly practical boots.
His footsteps would have been thunderous if he weren't walking in the grass. He was grateful that the soft soil was muting his stomps, as if not, he would likely scare away his quarry. Several gathered birds lingered at the far edge of the lake, trying to scope out some snacks among the discarded remains of some other students' snacks. He did not know their names, but he had become quite familiar with some of the local population - enough that he felt an affinity with them. Hence why he had come out here with a bag of birdseed under his arm, and was clumsily flinging handfuls at them.
A few flew away, while others lingered to see if they could survive the onslaught of seeds and nuts and come away richer for it. The boy let out a grunt of frustration as he watched a few of the birds flutter off. Yet another creature that he scared away while just trying to show his appreciation. George could feel his thoughts drawn back to a certain boy clad in black, and he imagined throwing a handful of seeds into the face of Felix Kolbeck. An angry grunt accompanied that toss as seeds came raining down on the last few birds, most of whom fled under the onslaught.
Oh well. They'd come back. George rolled the bag up closed, keeping it under his arm and waiting for the birds to present themselves again. He could leave out the seeds for them to enjoy later... but then they might not realize it was him that had done it, and he wouldn't get any credit with the flock. Hardly acceptable. Better to just mill around by the lake looking absurd.
George glanced over his shoulders before finding a dry enough spot of grass to sit at, staring out into the lake. A few moments passed before he jammed his fingers into the bag again and flung a few seeds out on to the water. A little morsel for the squid.

A Cool, Refreshing Day

The cool weather in September was just perfect for Hugh. Finally, things were cooling down and he could wear jumpers again. He wore his favourite red one, although it had seen better days. Frilled on the edges and holes on the bottom, it had taken the young wizard many attempts in as many years to keep the thing wearable. The rest of his outfit, brown corduroy trousers and a pair of leather boots, were in a considerably much better state and perfect for the outdoors.
Maybe on part of his being of giant's blood, he felt more in tune with nature these days. Stone, trees and ice, ancient forces of nature that called for his primal spirit. Humming as he strode across the school's grounds, the giant happily wandered towards the lake. He might catch the glimpse of the squid before it was forced back under the ice for a couple of months. A mighty best he still secretly wishes to wrestle with one day, though he doubted anyone would ever see the appeal in that if he told them.
As he got close to the lake's edge, he could make out another figure sitting a bit further removed from him. The yellow told him it was a badger, but after a few moments he was certain he knew the boy. With a smile creeping up on his face, he felt his heart skip a beat. Slowly, he raised his foot to take another step into the George's direction, but hesitated. Maybe he was here to be alone? The last thing Hugh wanted was to get in George's way. Him of all people was someone he would want to find peace. But the pulsing nudge from his own heart eventually pushed him to the brink of running. With a quick stride along the lake's edge, he'd wave over to the other boy if he ever looked in his direction.
"What are you sitting here all lonesome?" Hugh asked with a gentle smile resting on his face. "I hope I'm not disturbing your friends' feeding time." He joked as he nodded his head towards the birds. Hugh laughed without sound and looked around to see if anyone else was in the neighbourhood. It seemed like it was just the two of them. Pocketing both hands, he awkwardly stepped closer. "I... I quite like the lake. Nature, really. I hang around here a lot." His eyes would stare expectedly towards the still waters, wishing to see a ripple of life out there. "Mind if I sit with you?" He dared to ask, surprised by his own bravery.

A Cool, Refreshing Day
George didn't look back until Hugh was quite close, and gave him a little smile in addition to returning the wave. His eyes scanned over the bigger boy's outfit - noting the lack of helmet, this time. Perhaps he wasn't as wary about George smacking him over the head while they were within screaming distance of the professors?
The armor didn't make a lot of sense to him - but he had never seen Hogsmeade as anything other than an idyllic village. He saw headlines, occasionally, and was hit with a cold splash of reality when he spoke to that young boy from Koldovstoretz... but the suffering still only existed in abstract. The only thing bringing it home to him was the distinct lack of Ivy. He glanced out at the water and rubbed a hand over his head, feeling suddenly vulnerable.
It didn't make it any easier when Hugh finally closed in and smiled down at him, wondering why he was sitting alone. The reasons came to him in droves. "Just getting some quiet," he said softly, the anger that had been boiling up inside of him suddenly quenched by the words of the giant. A little laugh escaped George as Hugh pointed out his 'friends', who had scuttled back over to the scene of the seed-bombing to start picking at the feast that was laid before them.
"Yeah, sit down. You know, you walk more quietly than you'd expect," George said, wrinkling his nose as he looked up at the bigger boy. He never thought about it, but giants could be quite sneaky if you weren't looking at them. Their footsteps were fewer and further between, and could be just as soft as any small person's. Er, normal person's. Normal-sized. "I don't really come out here alone much."
George pushed up on his cheek, contemplating the water for a few moments. He let a little silence hang in the air. It must have been odd for Hugh, who might have never seen George with his mouth closed for more than three seconds at a time. (Even in class.) "I never used to, I mean. Now I sort of like it... a bit more. It's nice to get away from everybody. Uh, not that I want to get away from you, or anything."
Smooth lines as usual from this slick-talking badger. But he didn't keep bumbling over his apology, letting the silence wash it away with the cool wind. He nudged himself a bit closer to Hugh and further from the lake - using the part-giant as a barrier from the wind. He didn't say anything... but would give Hugh a little smirk if he noticed.
"Am I taking your spot? I could let you be lonesome here if you liked. I've got lots of spots."

A Cool, Refreshing Day

He did not know what to respond to George's point on stealth. Sure, he was tall. But not so big that his feet would stomp around like tree trunks. Thinking about it, it was the visual aspect of it that usually gave him away. The strategist in him took note of that if it ever came to a fight. He would need to find a way to disappear in case his survival hung in the balance. Not that he was in any danger from George, he assumed. But a solid escape plan was never not useful. For now, though, he had no immediate solution to this problem and chose to stay on the course he'd been. Train harder and bulk up. He'd beat them by force.
Alone? Hugh thought in response to George's comment. A pang of jealousy struck the giant's heartstrings. Was this like his popular dating spot? Hugh decided he did not want to know the answer, lest the place felt defiled afterwards. George clarified himself anyway, so there was no need for pointless imaginary torture. Hugh smiled as George expressed he did not want to get away from him. He shouldn't seek too much in such a comment. But he could feel himself yearn for such small signs of affection. Which felt wrong and forbidden, given that George had a boyfriend. Yet it also felt right to him. Though he did not turn it into spoken words. Hugh respected George and his partner for what they had. A leftover sense of chivalry from when he still dreamed of becoming a knight as a "small" child.
"It's not my spot." Hugh clarified happily. "And I think I have enough time on my own as it is." A smirk flashed over his lips before he let out a fatigued sigh. Yep, he was alone a lot. Twas the fate of a giant like him, he felt. His eyes slid over towards George as he wondered if he was alone a lot. He was aware that George had friends, though he could not gage how many. Then there was the matter of having a foreign partner. It could not be easy to be in love over such a long distance.
"The other schools are visiting soon." He sat up straight a crossed his arms over his knees. "I imagine you'll be happy to see your guy again?" He smiled with expectation to see his friend's smile over this future prospect. "You'll get to dance together at the ball!" The giant exclaimed with a feigned excitement. He was clearly trying to cheer George up.

A Cool, Refreshing Day
"Aww," George said, a soft sound of sympathy when Hugh mentioned having enough alone time. It was always a bit funny to him that Hugh had such a physical presence when, really, he seemed like a bit of a shy boy. The only times you'd really see him were if he were upset, like in class, or... times like this, when he sort of caught you off to the side. Living at the margins of attention was not something George could get used to, but Hugh navigated it gracefully. "I'm only sitting here throwing seeds at the birds, so I apologize if I am not quite as spectacular as my normal self. Just felt struck by the urge."
The mention of the other schools' imminent arrival struck a foul chord with George. He grimaced, wrinkling his nose and trying to focus on the positive - Gideon would be visiting, along with a few of his other little friends from across the various schools. Nobody good would be coming from Durmstrang, of course, only a bunch of pointy little punks. "My guy?" George repeated, a bit confused. His face started turning red after just a moment.
Of course, it wasn't like he'd posted his breakup in the school newspaper. It had been a (by George standards) quiet affair. Most had only noticed because he was no longer exchanging love letters or acting quite so giddy whenever an owl arrived with a letter for him. "No, Felix and I broke up. I just- I don't know... I don't really feel like explaining it." Least of all to Hugh. The thought made his stomach twist. He felt like he might burp. "So, no, I'm not really excited for them to show up... I guess the ball is like a consolation prize. I might see if Jake will go with me, but I don't think he has a good time when I just drag him along... he does like when I do his clothes though."
George swept a hand through his hair, looking out at the water for a few moments, seeing the ripples on the surface brought out by the waves. He palmed along the nearby grass, searching for a rock, and then threw it in to disturb the surface. Plop. The boy sighed, and then forced a small smile, trying to lift the mood. "It's what I get for not following my own advice. Got to stay away from Durmstrang."

A Cool, Refreshing Day

The giant's eyebrows rose up in surprise as George broke the news to him. He wasn't about to pretend he felt sad about the affair, perhaps only in the way he had to watch George get frustrated by the entire affair. Before Hugh realized it in time, his hand had reached out and patted the other's shoulder. He decided to just roll with it, no point in making that awkward. The moment had passed in a mere second anyway. He was being nice.
"How is Jake in the whole dating world?" Hugh caught himself asking out loud. The boy had always seemed... small. He found it hard to place the boy in any classic teenage romance scenario. it felt more like Jake the 'best friend character' for life or something. Or the tiny nerd that is sweet, but needs to spend the whole film getting over his fear to speak up. Hugh was still stunned they decided to make a boy like that a prefect. Not that he had heard anything bad about Jake, though he would beat him up if he ever caught him hiding his badge again. "Hasn't found a date on his own then?"
Hugh smiled at George's self-taught advice. Experience was a harsh teacher. He imagined himself in a Durmstrang uniform, reaching out for George's hand. They did wear very princely attires. He could definitely see the appeal just from their garb alone. It did not help that they all had handsomely sculpted faces with gazes that could kill. While Hogwarts was more of a 'mixed' bunch in comparison. As his imaginary self and George started dancing around his head, the giant's head would slowly redden. He decided it was best he turned his attention to a different matter. Like plucking blades of grass, for example.
"I guess I haven't found a date either..." His eyes slowly glided sideways to see if there was any reaction.
He chuckled and abducted a few more patches of grass from their homes in the dirt. "If Jake doesn't like to be dragged along, I guess I could make time... for you." He instantly shook his head, clearing his throat as if he tried to get rid of a demon that managed to possess him for the fraction of a second. "But that'd be... silly, of course... right?" His eyes not-so-subtly tried to look for a reaction from George once more.

A Cool, Refreshing Day
George leaned into that sympathetic touch. He hadn't forgotten their little outing to Puddifoot's completely - he could tell that, at least a little, Hugh would probably be pleased to hear the news. A warm hand on his shoulder was still comforting, especially as another cool breeze blew past the pair. George tugged his sleeves down over his hands and set his arms atop his knees, curling up a little bit.
"How- what?" George was completely stunned. He had scarcely considered Jake's dating potential. The little badger was a total write-off romantically. Not due to any lack of charm on his part - George was sure that some girls or boys or whatever Jake liked would have to like him back. But George didn't think that Jake did like anything. Aside from stuffed animals and warm chocolate chip cookies. The baby badger had nearly barfed when George brought up the topic of kissing to him in the past.
He gave the question its due consideration, which took no longer than a few seconds."He will... he's not going to do that for... he's probably not going to do that." No shame in going stag. He didn't hold the expectation Jake would pursue anyone. "If he shows up with a date..." George paused. "I'll eat my boots."
There was a few moments of silence as Hugh explored his imagination. George's image of the school used to be much the same - handsome boys in regal uniform, mysterious and distant, like the school they came from. The fact was, they were a bunch of snotty jerks who seemed to enjoy their reputation as dark and mysterious wizards. It made Hogwarts seem quaint, with its warring houses and mixed identity.
But even if they had fancy, well-dressed boys, none of the other schools allowed part-giants. Students such as Hugh, who were handsome in their own unique way, were denied to them. One point in favor of Hogwarts. (Compared against the risk of death, it was a small thing, but to the mind of George handsome lads were considered with greater weight.)
"I didn't know you still went to the ball," George admitted as Hugh mentioned his lack of date. Hugh, watching attentively, would notice the Hufflepuff's eyebrows quirk upward with sudden interest. It was quickly concealed beneath a veneer of cool indifference, however, as George attempted to project a sort of sullen introspection that he imagined Hugh might be attracted to.
A slight reddening in his cheeks couldn't be concealed as easily. He had also begun to smile, so the whole act really fell apart then. He reached down between the blades of grass and picked a bits of birdseed up, tossing them away. "Oh, you... want to go with me?"
Hugh had managed to sound quite unenthusiastic - especially as he backpedaled and called the idea silly. George pursed his lips and furrowed his brow as he examined the half-giant. It was amusing to watch him squirm. "You think going with me would be silly? Well, I was going to say yes, but if it would be too silly..." he said, batting his lashes at the half-giant. He followed up with a cheeky grin. "I think I could make some time for you."

"No. Not like th-" Hugh tried to interject as George slammed back at the giant's own silliness. He laughed as George decided he'd be worth his time. "Well, good." He said with a grin of his own. "Because I would love to go together." He admitted out loud. He realized he had never really been on a path like this before. It seemed old sages and vague seers knew what they meant when they warned you life could twist and turn in unexpected ways. Not that he would ever truly believe those people knew what they were on about.
"Where do you want to meet up? I could come downstairs and wait by your common room. Or we can just agree to meet wherever they're holding the ball this time. It changes every year. I swear, they just want to make things more complicated for themselves." He argued, mostly with himself. A cold sting rushed up the back of his neck as he recalled the night they had fought for Erin. As well as how he had hurt two boys and in turn got both his legs cut open by some kid with knives. On another ball, he had tried to remain friendly with Vladimir, though he had only received anger and jealousy in return. Not to forget his first ball ever, of course, the night other half-giants attacked the school. The day the prejudice really began against his kind.
Hugh gave George a worried look all of a sudden. No... it wouldn't be like that this time, would it? For once, it could be nice and quiet. And the world could be at peace for just a few hours. It'd be nice for George too, given he looked troubled sitting here by the lake. In an attempt to pick them both up from destructive thinking, the giant straightened his back and smiled with enthusiasm.
"Have any idea what you're gonna wear? We could go matching!"

A Cool, Refreshing Day
George couldn't help but feel a bit lightheaded as Hugh said he would love to go together. Several copies of Witch Weekly he'd read endorsed the technique of playing it cool, but under these circumstances, it wasn't possible. The Hufflepuff let out an airy giggle and then coughed as if he'd choked on it. "Ehm - I wouldn't mind meeting up by the entrance to the common room," he agreed. George recalled how he and Felix had first met and got a sour look for a moment. "I don't want to be caught up by anyone on the way to the ball."
He didn't want to have to meet up at the ball, because it was always chaos at a ball. Even if nothing extreme happened, it'd be full of people, most of them annoying little children running around in costume. Although, Hugh would be mercifully easy to pick out of the crowd... still - better to be seen walking together and making an entrance together.
At the question of their outfits - George looked like he might jump up into Hugh's arms when he said the word 'matching.' He put his hands on his cheeks and stared up at the other boy, considering what might shoot him. This would be a perfect opportunity to practice his needlework, as he doubted he'd be able to find something in a catalogue that suited his taste and fit on a half-giant.
"That is an excellent idea," he said. "We just need to think of an idea to match with..."
