A Smile that Glimmers Closed

[quote][font=bodoni monotype]Against her will, her mother had taken her to the dentist on one of the snowing days during the winter holidays. To her horror, Aurelia had been told she was getting braces. Like the obedient daughter she always was, Aurelia had agreed. The dentist did whatever that needed to be done to her teeth. True to his word, the pain in her jaw was very uncomfortable after the procedure was done.

Aurelia had thought that after a few days, the pain in her mouth would subside, to her dismay it didn’t. Not to mention the delicious food during one of the family gatherings that she couldnnot chew. There was an old saying which stated, “No pain no gain,” and fair enough, she had to bare with it for about two years before she had a beautiful set of teeth.

It was a smile, a small gesture, but what she received was a rather rude question: what was that on her teeth? Perhaps the older year had been a pureblood and didn’t know about braces, however Aurelia could help but feel slightly self-conscious. Braces unfortunately was hideous in her eyes too. It had only been about a couple of weeks since she got them and it might be the fact that she hadn’t gotten used to it to why she thought so. And so It had been days since the girl smiled, or at least shown her teeth to anyone for that matter. Talking was fine, as those knubs of metal on her pearly whites weren’t noticeable.

Aurelia made her way towards the grounds, towards one of the many trees. It wasn’t very easy to get a little bit of privacy in the school of Hogwarts and therefore she had to result in going out into the cold for a while. Sitting down at the roots of a rather big tree, Aurelia took about a small cardboard box from her bag. She carefully took out a small muffin, one that she snucked into her bag during breakfast. Out of her pocket, she pulled out a candle and a box matchsticks. Aurelia never liked using the perfectly good incendio spell, at least not after the accident in the look in and the various events during the blossom ball. That fire making spell was not her friend.

The girl put the candle in to the muffin and lighted it up with the little flame on the tip of her matchstick. To many, it might seem she was celebrating her birthday in secret, but that wasn’t the case. “Happy Birthday Raphael,” she whispered. Odd it was to be celebrating the birthday of her late brother, but to Aurelia, it meant a lot and also it meant that she had one more reason why she should smile. That week was by far, a depressing one.

Rosalyn had been drawing randomly in her sketchbook while sitting up in a pretty big tree. While she didn't enjoy filling her sketchbook with random doodles, there wasn't anything interesting for her to draw. As she looked around, Rosalyn noticed a girl walking around out in the snow. "Maybe she has come to draw as well." she thought to herself. She watched as the girl sat down at the root of the tree Rosalyn was up in and she just watched the girl for a moment.

Rosalyn watched as the girl took out a cardboard box housing a muffin, a candle, and a set of matches. She watched as the girl put the candle into the muffin and lit the candle up. Rosalyn remembered reading a book where a character had a birthday but used a muffin instead. She soon guessed it was the girl's birthday, but Rosalyn had also read before that most people celebrate their birthdays with friends. She assumed it couldn't have been the girl's birthday. "Hmm, a ritual then." she said in her head. Rosalyn had also read books about people using candles as a part of rituals, and usually used an object as a sacrifice.

Rosalyn was curious to see it and so she slowly began to climb down the tree without making any noise, and making sure that no snow falls on the girl. As she got down to the last branch, Rosalyn sat down on it, and leaned back so she was upside down and hanging onto the branch with her legs. Rosalyn's face was now right next to the side of the Girl's face.

Raphael was still 10, as a corpse he would not be able to age and therefore, a single candle would do. If the accident hadn’t happen, he would be a happy 16 year old boy living his life. But like the old saying, accidents happen, was rather true. They did, wether it was milk spilled by a toddler or somebody getting hit by a car. They were accidents and they did happen.

For Raphael, he had slipped and feel on ice and had tumbled down a flight of steps resulting in a snapped neck. Partially, it had been Aurelia’s fault. She was 7 years of age then and had foolishly agreed to play tag. Raphael was chasing her when he feel. Though many tried to comfort her saying it wasn’t her fault, Aurelia was convinced that it was and she hated herself for it.

The girl took a deep breath in, ready to blow out the candles when she suddenly heard a rustle up behind her. Leaves? It couldn’t be. Trees would be bare of leaves by the month of December. When Aurelia turned to see what was behind her only to let out a piercing scream at the sight of a large head right up side down beside her.

The scream lasted for about three seconds before her free hand instinctively swung up to cover her mouth. Braces, those hideous things. The last thing she wanted was someone ask what they were and ruined her day even more. It was a girl, a girl who appeared out of nowhere hanging upside down. Her hair was a unique color, a silvery blonde that matched the color of the snow on the ground. Aurelia had to admit it was slightly creepy.

You almost scared the daylights out of me,” the Gryffindor said with her hand still on her mouth and the other holding the muffin. The small orange flame was flickering violently from the winds. It was a rather preserving one, refusing to be put out.

Aren’t you afraid you’d fall?” she asked the weird girl. Aurelia had swung upside down a few times in her childhood, she never fell. But the thing with trees is that branches had the possibility of snapping especially during winter when it was ‘half dead’.

After Rosalyn had swung down, the girl had screamed in her face. For a glimpse Rosalyn noticed something shiny in the girl's mouth, but she soon covered it up. Rosalyn assumed it was braces; she couldn't think of anything else metallic like that can be put into someone's mouth. She had read multiple books about dental health, and stories where a character had braces.

After the girl stopped screaming, she began to speak, but Rosalyn had to listen carefully to hear because the girl was covering her mouth. The girl had said something strange that caught Rosalyn's attention. "You have daylight inside of you?" she asked in her monotone emotionless voice. Rosalyn had never heard of a human being with the ability to produce daylight. "Maybe she is a sun goddess." she thought to herself.

Soon after the girl asked another question, and Rosalyn was confused once again but this time it was with the girl's grammar. "Aren't you afraid you'd fall? Are not you afraid you did fall?" she thought to herself. She blankly stared at the girl for a awhile, but Rosalyn was simply just thinking. After sorting through all the information in her head, she came to the conclusion that the girl was a "redneck" from the southern parts of The United States. However the girl didn't really look the part which confused Rosalyn even more. After thinking for awhile, Rosalyn remembered that it was rude to not answer people's questions, and she responded. "I've never fallen out of the 347 times I've done this. Meaning that the chances of falling would be 0.288184438 percent. Adding in my history of acrobatics, that percentage would also fall but it is impossible to calculate skill, so sadly, I cannot give you an accurate way to show you my chances of falling. For being afraid however, falling doesn't seem to fit in any of the categories that people find relatively scary like vampires or mummies." Once she finished, Rosalyn began to stare at the girl once again.

Note: Her hair is completely white not a silvery blonde. Just wanted to point that out.

Upon realizing that her hand was still on her lips, Aurelia let it drop. These shiny things were eye catching especially in the light but were fairly hidden if she wasn’t smiling, laughing, opening her mouth to wide or screaming for the very matter. The corner of the Gryffindor’s lips tilted upwards slightly when the girl with snow colored hair gave a question about daylight being inside her.

It’s just an expression,” Aurelia gave a short explaination. “To put it simply, it means that you merely scared me for a bit.

The girl proceeded to give a fairly long explaination to how it wasn’t liable of her to fall from the branch. Aurelia guessed that it might be possible she was making those numbers up or she was just exceptionally good in math and mental calculations. It was most likely the former.

Have you calculated the chances of the branch snapping during winter?” the brunette asked tilting her head slightly at the same time. The girl was still hanging upside down with her hair barely brushing the snow on the ground.

Anyways, why are you here out in the ground in the cold on a random tree?” Many students would prefer the warmth of the Scottish castle and therefore it was unusual for someone dressed so slightly to be outside in the snowy grounds.

Rosalyn watched as the girl put her hand down away from her mouth. She wasn't sure what exactly she was covering, maybe it was just a random hand movement. Rosalyn was then relieved to receive an answer to her question. She had never heard that exact expression before, so she made a mental note in her mind to remember it. However, she still doesn't know exactly how daylight correlates to being scared for a brief moment, and Rosalyn was slightly disappointed that the girl wasn't a sun goddess.

Soon after explaining to the girl of why she wasn't afraid of falling down. The girl seemed to have asked a question that peaked Rosalyn's interest. It didn't peak because the question itself was interesting, it was the fact that Rosalyn forgot to mention a vital piece of information. "Out of the 347 times I've done this, 129 of those times were during winter. Out of those 129 times, a single branch hasn't broke as I've stepped on it. Meaning that there would be a 0.775193798 percent chance of a branch breaking on me. However, this could also derive from the fact that I can tell which branches do not seem safe to step on." Rosalyn hoped that this would clear up the girl's confusion.

While sitting upside down, the blood began to rush towards Rosalyn's head. She sat up for a moment, and dropped off of the branch. She then turned around so she could continue speaking with the strange girl. Rosalyn was then asked another question which to her seemed obvious. "I wanted to find something beautiful, or in more common terms, interesting. However there wasn't anything interesting enough for me to draw so I was simply filling my sketchbook with random things I have seen in the past."

Rosalyn didn't like talking that much, and she would try and keep her sentences as small as possible. However, she assumed the girl would once again ask more questions if there wasn't sufficient information. Although she did happen to enjoy answering questions in order to learn more about how other people think and react towards things.
