Rory was beginning to get used to this all. The giant school was almost traversable, the classes were becoming a bit easier. He could almost believe what his parents had been telling him -- things will get better. Yet a shadow loomed over him -- loneliness. He was an introverted young boy, and didn't even know where to start with making new friends. Or if friends were even something you're supposed to search for. Would it happen naturally?

But surely a boy at the age of eleven should have a larger social circle than his parents and cat. Especially since Blossom was the only one here with him at Hogwarts. And, while he did talk to his cat a lot, he was self-conscious enough not to converse with her in public. So who was left to work with him on group projects? To chat with in the hallway? For him to hide behind when he saw someone he wanted to avoid? No one.

The scene was almost something out of a dramatic film. A young blonde-haired boy in the courtyard, sitting on the edge of the fountain. Blue eyes, leaning more towards gray in this environment, staring into the distance. His mind in a completely different world. Unsmiling. He looked smaller than usual -- not that he wasn't short on a good day.

Rory's eyebrows furrowed. Well, this was a rather gloomy way to spend his free time. But what else was there to do? He wasn't in the mood to draw. Being cooped up inside the giant school for too long made him antsy, anyway. Maybe he needed another hobby. Oh, but not a sport, his body was too fragile. And the idea of a club full of strangers made his skin crawl. Instruments were too expensive. He couldn't sit still long enough to get through a book. And, on top of it all, he couldn't even use the internet here.

"I'm doomed. At this rate, I'm not only going to be a recluse, but a boring one." He projected the thought aloud, to no one really. Maybe to the skies. His knees swung back and forth, as if they were too restless to stay still.

Well, at least he would have his parents and cat.

It was hard time suddenly. After all those happy events, with parties and adventures Linda finally found out why her Gryffindor bestie was nowhere to find in Hogwarts this year. In the middle of September 2023 everything changed. It was that day when she didn't expect anything bad to happen, when she got news Li wished never get in her whole life. Owl from her best friend parents, saying that Amaris is dead.

October came suddenly and everyone seemed to wait Fall Ball. Linda didn't know if she even was going to go there. She still acted like nothing happened, but whenever she stayed alone thoughts were making her cry. So, today Linda changed her clothes, made her hairstyle and went out of the room. Trying to escape the unwanted thinking.

Linda was walking outside the castle without actually noticing where she was going. It was like this until something caught her attention. Or rather it was someone. A blonde-haired boy sitting alone on the edge of fountain. He looked what seemed to be quite lonely here. Li looked at the sky and back at fountain. It was her favorite place sometimes and it was quite rare to find someone sitting there.

This was surely enough to get Linda's attention and now she was happy about it. Perhaps this was good. Surely Linda wasn't intending to use the boy as distraction from her thoughts, but she still liked to be around her friends, getting new ones. Now especially she was appreciating every given possibility. She smiled warmly and approached him. Hi. It's really nice place, isn't it? Linda mused. Linda Emilia Ramirez, second year Gryffindor. What's your name?

Rory was deeply engrossed in his thoughts, before suddenly being startled out of them. He jumped in his seat at the sound of footsteps, almost falling back into the fountain. It was empty, which actually would've been worse that it being filled. Thank goodness he balanced himself quickly enough. Rory hoped this new person didn't notice that, or hear his earlier comment about being a recluse.

The girl in front of him seemed older, well put-together. She wore a pretty outfit with a lot of accessories -- a level of fashion that Rory aspired to but had yet to meet. Maybe most notable was her red hair, which made him quickly recognize her. They had never spoken, but he had seen the fellow Gryffindor around school before. Well, quite a few times near the beginning of the year, but not in a while.

There were a multitude of reasons that could explain this. He didn't know her age, but she wasn't a first year. They didn't have the same classes, and Rory wasn't exactly a social butterfly. If he saw the common room was busy, he would dart right back to the dorms. Maybe she wasn't getting out very much, either, yet she was clearly more comfortable with speaking to new people.

He could tell that she was friendly, and his guard immediately went down. She smiled, a friendly, sincere one, before greeting him and introducing herself. Apparently she thought that the courtyard was a nice place, and her name was Linda Emilia Ramirez. She was a second-year, and a Gryffindor. The boy took in the information quietly, watching her with slightly wide eyes.

And then she prompted him to reply. "Um... yeah. It's pretty out here. I like the birds." He answered, adding a detail about his fondness for animals. While it wasn't the best spot on the Hogwarts grounds to see animals, there were plenty of birds flittering about, occasionally making themselves known with chirps or tweets.

"My name is Rory." He realized that she provided her full name, "Oh! Well, Rory Philbert Hara. I'm a first year."

He took a moment of silence, fiddling with his hands in a nervous habit. Trying to come up with something else to say. It felt nice to meet a friendly face, who didn't seem bothered by his awkward habits. "I'm a Gryffindor, too. I think I've seen you around before."

Do you have favorite type of bird? Do you like animals or birds only? Linda asked while smiling warmly and encouraging. She liked Thunderbird but didn't know much about birds in muggle world.

Surely Li knew much more about muggle world during her first year in Hogwarts and during summer. However, it still was so little knowledge about so huge world. Linda smiled at the memories and returned her attention to the guy. There was nothing good in remembering more at the moment.

Nice to meet you, Rory. Do you like Hogwarts so far? She tried to not think much about her first year, but it was really wonderful time. Just as beginning of second year. Stop. Linda made herself stop her thoughts at that point. Wouldn't be best to start crying now. She was strong enough.

Oh I'm pretty sure you could see me in common room, Great Hall while eating, passing in corridors or somewhere outside the castle. I'm rarely staying in the room. Also I think I could see you during sorting ceremony and sometimes around here. Her voice now sounded so amused and sincere. Talking to Rory and sitting with him felt comfortable and natural. She didn't mind the fact that till now she was the one talking more. Linda wanted to know this person. And she thought he might be needing a friend. Who doesn't need someone to rely on, right? She didn't know exactly what he thought about it, but she wouldn't mind having new friend.

Why were you sitting here alone? It's nice to spend some quality time with oneself sometimes, but isn't it lonely other times? Linda knew constantly that this, most likely, was not a best question she could possibly ask. But she was just curious, without any judging. Do you have pet here in Hogwarts?

Rory was rather surprised by how his courtyard encounter was unfolding. He expected a quiet time of reflection, or maybe a couple words of greeting from the fellow Gryffindor; instead, he found himself engaged in a lively conversation.

He blinked in shock when Linda inquired about his interests in animals. Most people had dismissed it as a childish intrigue, but the creatures were really special to him. Growing up, he had learned a lot about the fauna of his home city, Birmingham. "Well, um... I really like pigeons, or ducks. They're very friendly, and like being fed." He fiddled with his hands. "I like all animals. I'd like to learn more about magical creatures, though." Many aspects of magic were new to Rory, including the animals. It was a pleasant surprise when he had arrived at Hogwarts.

He turned his face to look at the girl, she seemed kind. Warm, but perhaps a bit... distant? If that was the right word. Well, they were acquaintances, after all. She continued, asking him about his experiences at Hogwarts.

"It's not too bad so far. Maybe I was hoping it was more different than primary school, though." He scratched his cheek, looking like he wanted to change the topic. It was simple - Hogwarts was a new school, and the magical aspects were exciting, but Rory hadn't changed. He wasn't more capable of making friends. He didn't feel brave, either, despite being sorted into Gryffindor.

Linda went on to explain the ways they could've met. Really, it was what the boy had already considered. There were so many possibilities, and likely many more for them to meet. And this girl - she was really understanding, sincere. He felt a bit of hope, then, that he might make a friend. It was easy, almost natural, to talk since she led the conversation. His awkwardness, although still there, wasn't as noticeable as usual.

Then she asked a question that could get rather deep - why was he sitting there? Was it lonely? They were questions that the blonde would typically ignore rather than facing. He smiled meekly, "Hmm, I don't know. I usually like being by myself. It's a lot - all these new people." He looked at the ground, as if it was really interesting, "I just don't think I'm quite settled in yet." It was a truthful answer, if a bit vague. She didn't seem judgmental, at least, which is why he had even answered that much.

Then she moved on, inquiring about whether or not he had a pet. "Um, yes. Her name is Blossom, she's a brown tabby cat. She's really cute, and sometimes I dress her up in little costumes." He was rather enthusiastic about the topic, as Blossom was like his best friend.

He blinked, realizing that she had been asking all the questions. Although he doubted she minded, as she hadn't left, he attempted to contribute a bit more to the conversation. "Linda, how was your first year? Was it easy for you to get adjusted to being here?" It was rather personal, but he was hoping that her response would be encouraging.

Ducks and pigeons? Sorry, I know magical creatures, but I barely know non-magical ones. Could you describe them for me? Linda smiled in apologetic way. She knew much more about muggle technology, but she still knew very little about animals. Though, perhaps, Linda could know more from Rory while he could learn more from her.

Oh you were studying at school? I guess here a lot of things that are new for you. I can't wait for Muggle study. I didn't know anything about that world before Hogwarts. However, now I know some things thanks to my Hogwarts friends. Linda mused. Now she was once again more talkative. Just like some time ago. Li quickly returned her attention from thoughts and feelings she didn't want to have now. Unwanted sad, grief. That was totally wrong time for them now.

I felt so sometimes in the beginning. This place is quite huge and there're a lot of different students here. But it's nice that you like to be by yourself, however, I guess it will be a bit nicer with a friend. Linda smiled warmly while thinking about her words. She already experienced it previous year and now she was happy she had friends and those she can rely on.

Oh you have a cat too? I have an Egyptian mau, silver kitten Lila Moon. I also have some clothes for her. Truly enthusiastic Linda thought for a second how nice it would be for Blossom and Lila to meet. Only if Rory would like that.

My first year was amazing. I had some people come to celebrate my birthday and this is how I met my first friends. I spent too much in library or drawing or playing guitar and mainly all these things brought me really great friends. It was feeling like lonely sometimes, though. I have a drawing of me with huge castle in the background. But it got easier quite soon and I started to have fun in no time.

Rory blinked, realizing almost immediately the difference between their backgrounds. "Well... ducks are cute aquatic birds. Some live in a pond near my house. And, pigeons. Well, they're usually in the cities, and sometimes they made little cooing noises." He was clearly interested in the topic, appearing more lively than before, even if his explanations weren't very informational.

Her next comment reaffirmed his belief. She noted that even though she had little experience with Muggle society, she was eager to learn. His lips quirked slightly upwards, hopeful at the promise of further conversations with his new acquaintance. He didn't have anything to say in response, so he sat there contently, swinging his legs slowly against the fountain wall.

Linda then went on to mention that she sometimes felt similarly unsettled during her first time at Hogwarts. At least it should get better, then. While she agreed that it was nice to be alone at times, she softly reminded him that it can be nicer with friends. "Well, yeah. I'm hoping to make more friends as the year goes on." He tugged on the collar of his shirt.

And she had a cat too! Well, that certainly was a plus! Really, he would've been happy with most anyone as long as they had a pet. Luckily, this fellow Gryffindor was great on her own, too. "Lila Moon... She sounds great! Maybe our cats can meet, Blossom is a rather good judge of character so they'll certainly get along!" He seemed quite taken with the idea, his baby blue eyes practically sparkling.

He listened to her first year experience intently, nodding along to the pleasant tone of her voice. "Wow, a birthday party? That's a good idea." Rory had never been the kid who had birthday parties, or even was invited to the other children's in his classes. The idea was foreign and exciting, but not something he necessarily wanted to replicate. Either way, his birthday was in June.

She described some of her hobbies, sharing drawing as an interest with Rory. He would've told her as such, but he was rather nervous to show his work with anyone, even if he doubted she would press him to. Apparently, Linda felt lonely at times, too. Huh. But it got easier, at least in her experience. "I'm glad it got better for you. And I think it will be fun for me, too. So many things are new here, and rather exciting."

Rory clearly felt better than when he began the conversation, sitting a bit more straight and responding less nervously. "I'm trying to get out of my room more. Well, other than for classes and whatnot. There's always a lot of stuff going on, clubs, and activities, and places to practice your hobbies." He chuckled, somewhere between nervous and excited, "Surely I'll meet some more nice people. With how many students there are, it's pretty likely."

His eyebrows jumped up, as if he suddenly remembered something. "Oh. I guess I never asked, but what were you doing out here?"

Linda looked at Rory thoughtfully. From his description the only thing she got clearly was that most likely he was living in muggle world. Giving the fact that he didn't know about magical creatures, this must be true. She considered trying to get more description of appearance of these birds, but decided it was easier to see them. Were these birds also in wizard world somewhere? Linda wasn't sure.

I guess I should see one day. She mused while smiling warmly. I'm sure you can easily meet new friends here. It took me not that much before I got a nice group of close friends and best friends. Linda smiled at the memory of how suddenly quickly she started to be around new friends in her very first month here. Some were friends of friend, some just met at different places. It was just a matter of time and even introvert would have friends, as she had some introverted friends. Linda was extravert, but, perhaps, now Rory wouldn't say so about her.

Surely. I believe we can agree on meeting with our cats. Lila would like to have new friend. Linda smiled lively and with appreciation filling her voice. Was it first time during whole interaction that she finally looked more alive? Li couldn't judge as she didn't know how she looked from a side. She hoped she was holding in a good way, but how could she know?

It was fun. I thought I'd spend that day alone, but some students heard about my birthday and so I had a birthday party. Linda smiled. She still had that gifts from previous year in her room.

Give yourself some time and you will see that you will start orienting here quite well. It feels like second home now, especially some places within Hogwarts. You can find your own favorite places here, and with that you surely will meet some friends. Linda chuckled lightly and warmly, remembering how she thought she'll never find friends here at first.

Some time in my first year here, I was learning German with older girl. Otherwise I was coming to draw or just to sit and look around. Today I didn't have any plans. How often do you spend time here?

Rory nodded along to Linda's musings, but had no response to make. He further questioned the significance of blood status in the wizarding world -- not daring to consider what his life would be like if his parents were pureblooded, in contrast to a Half-blood and a Muggle. He scratched at his arm.

The boy gained some reassurance from the second year's testimony to making friends, but didn't press the subject further. His curiosity about her past was satisfied, even if his worries weren't yet assuaged. After all, Rory had set his expectations low -- it would be progress to have multiple friends, close or not. Only some of the company he had held thus far had been accommodating, much less agreeable.

Linda was receptive to Rory's suggestion for Blossom and Lila to meet, judging by her lively, warm tone. Her smile was quick, honest. "Then they will meet," the boy replied earnestly, "We can arrange a time later." The implications of the phrase were not immediately noticeable to the young Gryffindor -- it was a plan for them, too, to meet again.

An unexpected party? His eyebrows raised, and his lips were pressed in a straight, thin line. While surprises had the potential for delight, a surprise party did not. Yet he noticed the fond, faraway expression on the girl's face. Perhaps, for some, it would be a pleasant way to celebrate. "It sounds like you've met some special people." He could, at least, appreciate the sentiment.

She continued on with words of encouragement, promising that, with time, Hogwarts would be like a second home. He heard similar mutterings from his father Lewis on their trip to the Hogwarts Express, but accepted them this time with less reluctance. Rory couldn't yet rejoice, as time would prove the validity of her words, but he could wish for the best. His voice was soft and less pronounced, "I'm sure you're right."

Finally, the answer to his inquiry. Linda had a history with the courtyard -- from German lessons to simple moments of rest. To answer her question, he gave a simple response, "Less often than I wish. I'm not a fan of the crowds." The location could become rather busy during the day -- at those times it was dutifully avoided by the boy. A beautiful location; nevertheless, often noisy and overwhelming.

His mouth curled into a smile, clear blue eyes gazing towards the sky. "It's not so bad now, with a little company."

Linda smiled at the mentioning of another meeting. Sure it would be nice even for her kitten to have new friend. She glanced at Rory and looked at the sky. Linda always enjoyed it, no matter what was on her mind and how she felt.

I didn't expect it. Though I guess it's better than being alone at that time when I already felt lonely. Linda chuckled. It wasn't a party that you might be imagining. We met in the library, went out to have a picnic and then just stars, cake, biscuits and group of new friends. However, I'm thankful to them that they decided to approach me.

Linda decided to not talk about the fact that with none of those friends she's talking these days. There's nothing wrong with it, just they later had new interests, new friends, so just stopped meeting. It was unnecessary and might sound sad. However, Linda didn't feel sad about it. At least not anymore.

Sure we all have our own experience. But hopefully time will let you feel more at ease here like it did for most of my friends and me. She smiled and thought it was a time to go to read in the room. She fixed her sleeves, revealing for a second friendship bracelet from her Hufflepuff bestie.

Looking at it caused her smile of pure happiness before she hid it under sleeve again. You can find a time when there are less people. Not only here but in whole Hogwarts as well. With much less people you will still leave yourself a chance to get new friend. While escaping people will surely leave you feeling quite lonely in this place.

At Rory's sentence about little company Linda smiled. It's nice here indeed. It was nice to meet you here and I'm looking forward to meet again with our cats, however, I need to go back to the room now. Are you staying here else or would you like to go to the castle together?
