Icebreaker to Get to Know You Closed

It was a very loud day in the cafeteria. AJ's migraine hit hard, and they found themself having to sit a take a breather at the end of the Ravenclaw table. While doing this, AJ actually took the chance to look around and try to identify the many faces in the Great Hall. They were trying to get to know everyone by face value, and this was actually good practice. And while doing this, AJ felt the scent of the freshly cooked food works its way up to their nose. Mmm. That was a good smell. AJ delighted in the smell, and they used it to try to rid themself of their migraines and focus on something positive.

Of course, it was still hard. AJ was very sensitive to loud noises, and right now, the Great Hall was just a combustion of loud noise. AJ had to place on, their head and ears, their blue noise-cancelling headphones and try to focus on the book they were reading. They were currently reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. First book in the series. AJ just still couldn't focus though. It was beginning to get very frustrating. AJ finally slammed the book shut and looked over to see what food they could stuff their stomach with.

"Ooh. Some tater tots. These look delicious. I think I'll have these with some delightful ketchup," AJ said to themself as they grabbed a small plateful of tater tots and poured some ketchup on the plate with a spoon. AJ then slowly took their fork and lifted one warm tater tots to their lips, blue on it to cool it off, and big down on the fork, gritting their teeth to slide the tater tot off the fork. Thankfully, the fork wasn't plastic, or else they probably would've bit off a piece of the fork, seeing as to how hard they bit down on the fork.

Suddenly, AJ felt the presence of someone sitting next to them. They looked up and were shocked to find out that a Gryffindor was hanging out at the Ravenclaw table, which was unusual. Most times, students just sat at the table of their House. AJ thought this was peculiar and went over to join the Gryffindor student. AJ walked over and held out their hand for the Gryffindor to shake. "Hi! I'm AJ Adams. I'm a first-year Ravenclaw this year. It's peculiar and weird for you to be sitting at the Ravenclaw table. This is for Ravenclaw students, after all. What are you doing, sitting over here."

AJ all of a sudden clasped their hands over their mouth. Part of their mental conditions was that they sometimes didn't think before saying and doing things. AJ just acted on instinct. Quickly, they reverted and resaid their introductory statement to the Gryffindor student. "Sorry, I mean, hello. I'm AJ Adams. May I sit with you. You seem like an interesting person. What's your name?" AJ asked with curiosity.

AJ sat down in the space next to the Gryffindor student, which wasn't far from their original seating spot. The lighting in the Great Hall seemed to flicker for a moment, which bothered AJ's headache. But then it went away. AJ finally refocused on their new lunch buddy that they were hoping to turn into a friend.

The night before was terrible. Tossing and turning. Jay doesn't think he even got a wink of sleep. New first years are always chattering away in the night, a sound that used to give him a sense of security, now annoys him. It's hard to believe he used to be the loudest in the room only a single year ago. But times are changing, and he has to too. When morning came, he hadn’t slept, but that didn’t matter anymore. The bags under his eyes can’t get darker, right? Looking in the mirror, it probably looked more like two overfilled suitcases under his eyes.

The motions of the morning was something he knew very well. Get your robes on, mess up your hair a bit, and smile at fellow classmates. Act normal, for the most part. He was supposed to be this happy guy. He didn’t have the heart to break the illusion. But it didn’t take long for the first problem to arise. Blue and silver? Or red and gold? Sure, he was a Gryffindor, but that didn’t mean he liked his fellow housemates. Loud, obnoxious. Probably the sole reason the Great Hall was just so.. Loud. He decided against it. He had no notable friends that would want to talk to him at the lunch table in the Gryffindor section.

To Ravenclaw he goes, he supposed. He waved to a few friends with a little grin on his face. He was commonly seen hanging around birds instead of lions. His first friend here was a Ravenclaw, after all. He didn’t really care if he was breaking rules by sitting here. He was used to it and that's what matters. Right? He was comfortable here, despite the growing tension from the sheer amount of voices all flooding his ears. Before he could even think of shutting it all out, covering his ears with his hands, he heard the squeaky voice of a first year.

With a glance, he could tell it was a Raven. Further confirmed when they said it themselves. Hm. Nosey little bugger. He liked them already. Jay grinned, the second year talking AJ’s hand with a firm shake. “Jay Divus, at ya’s service. Call me Divus. Just a’mirin’ the blues and silvers y’all have on. Much better than viewin’ at a dis’ance.” He chuckled at the fast mouth that the other student had. It seemed their mouth moved too fast for their head to second guess themselves.

“Don’t worry ‘bout it.” Said the messy brown haired boy, waving it away. “You weren’ bein’ rude in my eyes. I like a kid who can say wha’s on their mind. Sit.” The flicker of the lights got him tense up. Ow. That hurt his eyes. Uah. “Hah, looks like the lights are slackin’ off this mornin’. Must be tired like the rest of us. Y’know, they should give those floutin’ candles a break for a day. Sure, it’ll be dark, but then I can get a much needed nap in be’ore class.”

AJ took a seat next to Divus. This was going to be fun. AJ was slightly nervous to turn out as a bad friend, since they had always had trouble understanding social cues and making friends. "So, like I said, I'm AJ Adams. My birth name is Tara, but I go by my non-binary name, since I am non-binary. Speaking of, my pronouns are they/them. Just so you know. So, I'm in Ravenclaw, as you could probably tell already. I see that you are in Gryffindor. You have a very cool accent, I must say."

AJ was just rambling on at this moment, trying to find the right things to say. Suddenly, the therapy they had received for understanding social cues kicked into their minds, and they found what they wanted to say. "So, um, do you wanna play an icebreaker game with me to get to know each other? It's a Muggle icebreaker game called Two Truths and a Lie. Pretty much, you have to say two true things about yourself and one lie about yourself, and the other person or people have to guess what the lie is. After, you can reveal the lie and say why it is a lie. What do you think? Do you wanna play with me?"

Andrea was late for breakfast. She ran as fast as she could to the Hufflepuff table. She struggled finding a empty seat. She looked around until she saw two empty seats. One next to two fifth year students and the other one next to two seventh year students. She ran to the empty seat closest to where she was standing. This seat is taken the fifth year students shouted in her face. Not that nice she tough. She tough all Hufflepuffs wear nice, I guess not. She ran to the other empty seat. May I sit down? She asked the two students. They said no and ignored her when she asked why. Andrea was desperately looking for a open seat. She hadn’t eaten a lot yesterday so she was starving. When she was on her way over to the teachers table to ask where she could sit she saw a Gryffindor at the Ravenclaw table. That’s weird she tough to herself. She turned to her left and started walking to the table. The Gryffindor boy was talking to a first year Ravenclaw student. Andrea didn’t know it was possible to sit at the other houses tables. She stoped to look around. She didn’t se other students doing it, Sitting at the other houses table. When she came to the table she looked at the two students.
Hi! Can I sit here?
she asked the two of them.

It seems the two were similar in that sense. Social cues, no matter how much he pretended to know what they were, was a foreign concept to him. A term made up by adults to try and make life harder. And one the bratty students picked up on easily to make fun of others, laughing and pointing when one doesn’t understand poorly applied sarcasm and an offer that was clearly a joke to make the other feel bad about themselves. He hated people like that. Poking fun at others with no real reason other than to be a jerk with no life.

Jay listened, but immediately became self conscious when his accent was mentioned. It was something he tried again and again to hide. Don’t stand out, his father said. Keep your head down and shut your mouth. It didn’t seem like the second year really got the memo. He was always a very talkative kid, going up to random people with no prior knowledge of them and simply just striking up a conversation. That was how he was. Well, used to be. Ever since what happened this summer, he’d been a bit more weary of engaging with others alone.

“Yeah. M’a Brit. Some people think it sounds ‘sophisticated’ or somethin’ like that, but I’m far from it.” The girls voice didn’t scare him. He had heard her coming long before she spoke up. It was too loud, but too quiet. Too overwhelmingly everything. Oh well.“It ain’t my table, kiddo! Why don’t ya ask the nice Raven lad?” He said, patting AJ’s back and looking up at the Hufflepuff in front of him. It seems he was just a magnet for first years. At least he had friends? It’s sad that he sloped so low. Humans were mere distractions from his mind at this point.

Two Truths and a Lie. The muggle-born found himself actually looking forward to it. “You know muggle games? Surprisin’. Thought y’all just all had ya’s noses in a book about school or somethin’!” He joked, the magical candle light flickering in his dark brown eyes. “I’d love ta. Last time I played that was nearly 3 years ago now. Time flies.” Another short laugh, as he rested his hands in the pockets of his jeans. Was it against the dress code to have those on? Maybe. Did he care? No.

“Hey, tejón, mind tellin’ us your name? Bit awkward if we don’ know it, if ya know wha’ I mean?”

Andrea stood and looked at the Gryffindor student for a bit. She didn’t expect him to have such an weird and fascinating accent. She was a little shocked a boy like him sounded like that. She didn’t say anything about it tough. She wanted too be nice and she didn’t think it was anything bad about his accents, it was just a little unexpected. Andrea laughed a little when the Gryffindor boy told her to ask the Ravenclaw lad if she could sit down. She smiled at him and turned to the Ravenclaw student.
Can I sit down at your table?
she didn’t know if the boy was kidding so she didn’t think before she asked. Andrea sat down on the wooden bench.
Yeah I know a few muggle games.
Andrea answered the boy with a big smile on her face.
I heard you were going to play the game one truth and two lies. I love that game, We use to play it at my old muggle school.
Andrea said with excitement. She turned around to the Ravenclaw student
what’s you name? I think I saw you when we got sorted into our houses.

Oh sorry. My name is Andrea Harrison.
Andrea waited for a answer when she suddenly realized she hadn’t asked for his name
what’s your name?
she smiled at the boy.
Nice to meet you both!

Happiness just filled AJ's soul and made them feel so good to finally be making friends. Nobody in Muggle school ever wanted to talk to them, so they felt especially good that someone actually was interested in them. "Hi Andrea. I'm in Ravenclaw, as you can probably tell by the robes, and I believe you are in Hufflepuff. Your robes have yellow in them. That's how I knew. And I'm glad you like Two Truths and a Lie. It's a good icebreaker game."

AJ took a deep breath and settled down so that they didn't get to hyper and spaz out and look strange to their new friends. AJ really wanted to make a good first impression. "So, how about I go first to show you how it is done, in case you need a reminder. Three statements. Two are true, one is a lie.
And we have to guess the lie."
. AJ took a deep breath and thought about what they wanted to say. Finally, some good ideas slipped in their mind as the lights hanging from the ceiling flickered gently above them.

"So, one: When I die, I want to be reincarnated as a female deer. Two: I was adopted by my parents at the age of one. Three, my favorite type of paint to use when painting a portrait is acrylic paint. Can you guess which one is a lie?" AJ asked with a happy glint in their eye. This was most definitely fun for AJ. A perfect way to get to know some new friends.

“Divus. Names Divus.” Jay, his first name, was way too common for his liking. It sounded like every athletic boy ever born. Divus, his last name, was more unique. And way more chances for nicknames. With a name as short as his own, nicknames were few and far between. Not like he was actively searching for nicknames, But it would be nice to be able to have some. Oh. Another muggleborn. Could also be a half-blood child, but he was sure his first instinct was right. He was always good at reading people. There was a problem last year with a certain Slytherin because of it.

Okay, jumping right into the game. Of course he knew how to play. The title was self explanatory. Tell three sentences, and two of them have to be the truth, the other one a lie. Be reincarnated as a doe? That didn’t seem right. AJ was nonbinary. Being reincarnated as an animal that doesn’t even fit their gender? Something isn't adding up. Being adopted seemed plausible. And he liked acrylic paints himself. He hoped it wasn’t that one, he jokingly thought to himself. “First sentence. Seems the most.. Lie-like.” He didn’t really know how to explain his reasoning. It just didn’t sound right to him.

At least it wasn’t the pureblood snobs he encountered over in Gryffindor. Think they're all better than him because their parents decided to have kids with their siblings and cousins. All pureblood families were related, which makes for a confusing family tree. He didn’t discriminate, but he’d had too many bad experiences with purebloods to not be at least a bit weary of them. “I’m still thinkin’ of mine. Angie, ya can go first if ya want. Need more time ta think of a good one, don’t wanna go basic, y’know?” He just needed a bit more time. Just time.

Well, talking about himself is not something he really enjoys doing. In getting to know you assignments, it was always the blandest things he could think of. He has a cat, a brother, and his favorite subject was Astronomy. The random stuff to stay under the radar and not known. Stay in the undisguisable crowds of students walking. Just another Gryffindor, nothing to see here. Even though it was only October, he was already tired of school. Of the constraint hustle and bustle of the school hallways. It was only worse with Fall Ball just around the corner. And Halloween was too.

Halloween. Aaah, crap. He didn’t even talk to his parents about Halloween. Last year he went pretty all out, decorating his whole dorm room. But that kind of stuff was for first years. The naivety of a child, before they knew anything of the real world. Still awestruck with the world of magic and Veelas. He wasn’t anymore. The magic of the soul was gone. Now he was just waving his wand around and hoping the fake emotions will do him some good.

Yeah I’m a Hufflepuff.
the girl answered Aj with a happy voice. When Aj explained the game rules Andrea was secretly super happy. She didn’t remember all the rules, but she didn’t wanna ask because she just told both she played it a lot before at her muggle school. It was true and all but in her eyes they would think she was dumb for not remember the rules for such an easy game that she had played many times before.
Divus is such a cool name.
Andrea responded not knowing it was his last name.
I wish I had a unique name like that.
Andrea said. Andrea liked her name but it wasn’t cool or unique.

The game started and Andrea was ready to get all the answers right. She was ready to try her best like always. Ok one lie and two truths. Being adopted sounded like something that could be a lie but it’s also a normal thing at the same time so it could be true. This was hard Andrea thought. It was a lot easier in the muggle world. There it was more like I like pink, blue and yellow and one was a lie. Andrea looked at the boy waiting for him to answer first. You can go first? No no no Andrea tough. She hadn’t decided what to answer yet.
Okey sure.
ugh Andrea tough to herself. She didn’t want to go first but why say no. It wasn’t that important anyway. It wasn’t really a problem for her to start so she didn’t bother saying no.
I think the lie is that you are adopted.
she didn’t really think before she answered so she didn’t have a reason to why she choose what she choose.

"Hahaha! Well, as much as I would have liked for one of you to guess the correct answer, you are both wrong," AJ said with a playful smile. They liked stumping people, but they had hoped that one of their new friends might have gotten the right answer. Then again, all three options were hard to choose from.

"So, the correct answer is the third option, about liking acrylic paints the most when I paint. That is the lie. Actually, I like to use watercolor paints. Adds more of a challenge, and I can combine colors more to make more colors than I can with acrylics. Plus, you never really get the same color twice with acrylic paints. It's easier to do so with water color paints, in my opinion." AJ smiled at their two friends again and took a deep breath, while simultaneously picking up a piece of toast, spreading blueberry jam on it, and taking a huge bit out of it.

"So, I know that I am non-binary, but I was born a female, and that is why I want to be reincarnated as a female deer after I die. And I am adopted. My birth parents were too young and had mental issues. My birth mom's older sister is best friends with my adoptive mom, and that's why I was adopted by the parents I have now. And that's a little bit about me. Okay, Divus, your turn to go and tell us two truths and a lie. I'm ready to guess," said AJ as they gestured toward Divus to go next.
