Spell: Boggart-Banishing Spell
Incantation: Riddikulus (ri-di-KULL-lis)

Maverick Castle stared straight to the void, or perhaps it was to the wall. Wherever he was staring at, it was not important. It was not important in the least because his mind did not focus on whatever scene was reflected in his sage green eyes.

The young Gryffindor was frustrated, but not because he had just failed something: he was frustrated with the fact that there was such a thing called fear in this world, a feeling, and he had to feel it as well. He did not like feeling afraid as it did not make him feel good, like when he felt the wind hitting his face during motorcycle rides with Uncle Francesco or roller coaster rides in a Muggle theme park, or like when he was joking around with his closest friends.

He remembered very well the day he joined some other young wizards and witches working on a quiz in a teen magazine one of them (accidentally, or so that kid had claimed) "had borrowed" from his elder brother. The question said something about a bird that could change colour daily, red on the first day, blue on the second, yellow on the third, and black on the fourth. "What colour do you think it will be on the fifth day?" Isaac read the final sentence aloud to all of them before continuing with the options of the possible answer.

Today, Maverick could not recall all of the four options except for two: black (option A) and gold (option D). He himself had answered A on that day, the result of a logical reasoning that the first three colours were primary colours and they made black when being mixed, so surely black was the "most complete colour" for the bird and it has achieved this level. But Justin chose option D and "huuh"-ing at Maverick's choice; and when Isaac read that the magazine said those who choose D are those who knew no fear, Justin let a "woo hoo". So clearly, fearless was good and scared was bad...

"You're ready to try again, Mr Castle? I'll release the boggart once you are."

That was all needed to snap Maverick out of his reminisce and back to the present. Professor Lécuyer had been the most helpful, understanding that the Gryffindor wanted further studies at Defence Against the Dark Arts. The preteen was not sure his teacher understood his ambition, but not that he had informed the adult anyway. His ambition was simple, to be an invincible individual like the heroes in Muggle films and comic books.

But he had to take the steps to get there, and defeating this boggart was one of the very first. "I am ready, Professor."

The professor nodded, opened the cupboard. It would be a lie to say he was not nervous or getting goose-bumps all over. Gosh, he had had no idea what the boggart would look like the first time it came out of the cupboard, and for goodness sake, the other pupils would surely be rolling on the floor laughing upon finding out that the brave Maverick Castle's boggart took shape of a worm or a caterpillar. And it was not even a big one, just a teeny-weeny little one, but the size made it even worse than if it were gigantic.

He was not sure whether he felt disgusted or what, but these little legless animals always made him shiver, sending goose-bumps all over his arms and the back of his neck. Suddenly he could recall the day he jumped onto his bed upon accidentally hearing his mother mentioning the word 'caterpillars' to his father, fearing that they might get him if he stood on the floor.

Almost automatically, albeit not without worry that he would see the ugly shape, Maverick focused his mind, aiming his wand at the boggart and shouting earnestly, "Riddikulus!" And in front of him there was no longer a disgusting creature, but instead a beautiful butterfly, its wings the colours of the rainbow. (Did it even exist in real life?)

He had done it. He had mastered the boggart-banishing spell.

That means there was just one last thing to take care of. "Professor Lécuyer?" he whispered. "You wouldn't tell anyone what shape my boggart turns into, would you?"

Wonderful job, it is not every day that one learns to conquer their fears. Also, your secret is safe with Orion!

Spell: Revulsion Jinx
Incantation: Relashio (ruh-LASH-ee-oh)
Wand Movement: Link
Music:
Relashio did not sound cooler compared to Expelliarmus, at least for Maverick Castle. On the contrary, in his opinion, it was the other way round. Expelliarmus worked against living people, but Relashio was most often used with inanimate objects.

But why would Professor Orion Lécuyer, on behalf of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, make the decision to have Expelliarmus taught to second year pupils and Relashio third year students? Or was it the Ministry of Magic who wrote this curriculum, the way Muggle's Ministries of Education did to their national schooling systems? Either way, why did it have to be this way? Was the revulsion jinx actually more difficult than the disarming spell?

Perhaps then, this would be enough with the thinking, it was time to start giving Relashio a try. All right, he may not have learnt how to cast Expelliarmus before, but who said he could not start with the revulsion jinx instead? He could remember how it felt, and when one day he would give the disarming spell a try for the very first time, he would be able to compare the difficulty levels to successfully cast the two spells. Besides, it should not be long before he, as a second year, would be taught Expelliarmus in class.

The young Gryffindor took a deep breath, attempting to motivate himself to begin. Remind me why I want to master the revulsion jinx, he said inside his head. Because, Mav, you have been tipped that this spell will be a useful one to know before a broom race. He might not have a full understanding of what obstacle (or obstacles) Relashio could work effectively against, but it was worth a shot; he would move heaven and earth to be known and remembered as one of the greatest broom racers Hogwarts had ever had.

Studying the movement of the wand explained in the textbook one more time, muttering the incantation once again, Maverick finally focused his attention to the model his Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher had kindly lent to him for this learning purpose. Forest green eyes locked at the target, and - "Relashio!" he said seriously, the wand in his right hand moving upward, horizontally to the right, and then upward one more time - all in one continuous movement.

There was a purple light at the tip of his chestnut wand and it shot at the target, hitting the loop, thus dropping the stick inside the loop due to the force.
