I sat down on my seat at the Gryffindor Table. The Great Hall was a breathtaking sight. The ceiling was made to look like the sky or maybe it actually was the sky. You never really know in the magical world. It’s mysterious that way.
I stared around the great hall, there were five tables, one for Ravenclaw, one for Slytherin, one for Hufflepuff, the one I was sitting at was the Gryffindor table. The teacher’s table was facing toward me. The Sorting hat had sorted me into Gryffindor. Something about me thinking that I don’t like people who lack pride, which isn’t true. I respect everyone. yeah right My mama had said something about the four houses at Hogwarts. What did she say about Gryffindor again? Was it the loyal ones? I forgot. My train of thoughts are broken when food appears out of nowhere on the once empty table.
Someone puts a baked potato on my plate and I take a bite. It was delicious. I look at the person sitting opposite to me. He had dark hair and green eyes. He looked a bit older than me. I assumed he was a second year. I had lots of questions about Hogwarts and why not ask someone who has lived here for a year before.
“Hello my name is Alejandro Garcia and I’m new here. What’s yours?”

Was there something wrong with this kid? Maverick Castle rolled his eyes and decided that the answer was an absolute yes. People did not just go and tell a stranger their names unless they were doing business, or so he thought. Except for this, he was sure there were only three possible reasons someone would do so: either the person was arrogant and assumed that others had to know his name, socially awkward, or mentally disturbed. (Yes, attention seekers and those who tried too hard to be recognised belonged to that last category as well.)
He looked back at the first year opposite him, his shoulders slightly leaning to the front as if to show his seriousness. "Listen, kid," the second year said straightforwardly, though not in an exactly rude way per se. "You shouldn't open a conversation with someone you don't know with a self-introduction, unless you're doing business or another formal talk with your listener. If you do that, you'll scare people. You should begin with small talks, like, 'Isn't the Great Hall just great?' Or, 'Are you tired after riding on the Hogwarts Express all day?' Right, these suggestions aside, how would you like me to help you?"

My first thought when he said that was ‘Does this guy have any friends?’ Clearly he was the latter, the antisocial kind. Friends aren’t just going to fall out of the sky.
“You should begin with small talks, like, 'Isn't the Great Hall just great?' Or, 'Are you tired after riding on the Hogwarts Express all day?' Right, these suggestions aside, how would you like me to help you?" He asked.
At least he wanted to help me although I was liking the boy less and less by the minute. His suggestions were pretty correct if I had thought carefully about it.
“Alright got it. Start with small talk. Isn’t the Great hall just great? Aren’t you tired after riding the Hogwarts express all day? Where are we going after eating?” I asked.
I had followed his advice. I’ll admit, the first two questions were mainly just to get on his nerves and the last one was my serious question.

Maverick sighed. This kid clearly had no skill in social situation; and no, he did not even have to say that he was new to Hogwarts for the part-Veela to know it.
For him, it was without doubt the first year had never had a real taste of what life was like. Why, he might as well have never been to a school; perhaps he was home-schooled and had no friends (except perhaps few that he had made when he was a toddler), or maybe the school he had attended was such as small one where all pupils had known each other since kindergarten.
The reason why he had come to such conclusion? Because teens and preteens who had been at Hogwarts for at least a year did not open a conversation by introducing oneself right away. It was too straightforward, too naive: a way that fit only very young children.
But bombarding someone you did not know with lots of (that is, too many) questions appropriate for small talks was not a good technique, either. In fact, it would transform appropriate questions to inappropriate; and that is exactly what this boy was doing.
"Tut, tut," the second year said. "You asked too many opening questions, and it would turn people off instead of being interested in conversing with you. Try again."

"That's better," Maverick said almost approvingly, ignoring the new student's comment about him having a standard too high. He knew he did not; the problem was with most people because they set such low standards on everything: on themselves, on other people around them, on how this world worked. And their attitude was the source of all troubles on Earth. (How could it not? If only people spent more time getting serious and less time being so self-absorbed, the world would be a much better place to live in.)

I finally got a the answer I was looking for. Now if he had just said this at the start of the conversation then we both would have saved all the hassle. It's a win-win situation but this boy just had to make things complicated. Anyways the most important thing was that now I knew where we were going and what we were gonna do after eating. He still has yet to tell me his name. I wonder if he's going to make a big fuss over that.
Before I could finish my train of thoughts the boy started talking again.

We're all students going to the same school. Shouldn't we know our classmate's name? Much less he was in my house. Shouldn't housemates know each other's names?
"Ya did it Castle, ya answered the questions. Good job. Thanks for the warm welcome to Hogwarts" I said and I went back to my food.
Lets hope I never have to talk to to this guy again.
