Skipping Rocks.
@Riley Williams - Private RP commencing 27/12/18.
It was a late Saturday afternoon, one in which students were free to do whatever they pleased. It was quiet on the grounds, since a lot of students were either at home for the holidays or had gone to the tri-weekly Hogsmede Visit. Personally, Henry couldn't wait until he was a third year so he could explore all the shops that they spoke about in the common room. An older student, Keiron, in Fifth year was kind enough to take orders from a few first and second years and would bring back items they needed, such as for their classes or for someones birthday. Of course, they had to pay him, with delivery fees.
Henry was spending christmas at Hogwarts because his family had split up this year. His siblings had either gone with their father to his parents for the holidays or the older ones camped out at the house for the two weeks. Henry had personally chosen to stay because he would have been forced to go see his grandparents, as only the oldest three had been allowed to stay, which was hours away from home, and his mother's hospital didn't let visitors come at Christmas as she got more upset at this time of year. It was overall easier for him to just stay here- he didn't have to watch his grandparents fawn over his stepmother again or fight for survival in a house where all the money would probably be spent in two days.
He still wrote letters every day, and so did they. It didn't usually happen this way but with his dad and stepmum only getting married the year prior, they were leaving the children at the father's parents whilst they went to visit her parents. Staying out of the drama was best for Henry, and he didn't mind staying here. He got fed three times a day, had his dorm room to himself and had full roam of the library. He'd even finished his christmas homework already.
Skipping rocks was a hard process for him to succeed at, as he'd decided two hours ago when he got wrapped up in his warm coat, hat, scarf and mittens. They weren't house coloured, instead being a mix of random colours that he'd brought with him. Practicing was something he could set his mind on for a while, so he was entertaining himself by seeing how well he could teach himself to skip rocks. It wasn't going well so far.

Wind rushed across the grounds as Riley made his way to the lake. He had not been given the option of going home, not that he would have taken it anyway. His brothers were all going to various places: a girlfriends house, one of their oldest brothers places. Riley knew he would not have been invited, and would probably have had to gone to take care of his father.
Riley had on his winter cloak and a random scarf that he had grabbed while packing, made from patches of wool like some sort of a quilt. He blew on his hands as he neared the lake, and sighed as he caught sight of a boy who was sitting there trying to skip stones. Was it to much to ask for a little bit of quiet? He stood watching the other for a while before smiling lightly and walking up behind him. It was not often he just spoke to people, but something about this boy seemed different. Riley didn’t get that same nervous feeling around him as he did around the other kids in his house.
“You’re doing it wrong...” he muttered lightly, looking up at the other, “It’s a swifter movement... make sure it lays flat too.”

When Henry thought, he really got lost in his mind. Due to this, he had failed to hear the male coming up behind him and therefore acted instinctively when he suddenly spoke.
A clunk would be heard as the rock that was in Henry’s hand found its way flying towards Riley. Luckily as he was sat down, it wasn’t aiming for his face. A girlish squeak accompanied the panicked throw, Henry was a little bit jumpy on the best of days.
Having had twirled around from where he had been sat, one hand supporting him from falling backwards, he’d stare wide eyed at the male he’d attacked.
“I am so sorry- you spooked me, are you hurt?” He’d fuss over the male, though he hadnt moved from his spot as, if he was being honest with himself, his legs were numb. He’d been sat there for at least a solid two hours with his legs crossed and so they were very much like jelly now.
His hat covered the majority of his hair but a few odd curly and long bits peaked out from under the ends, his usually pale face had a red tinge to it- both from the cold and embarrassment. Perhaps he looked more scared than he should have been, but then again he had thrown a rock at a complete stranger.

"I'm fine!" Riley chuckled lightly as he looked at the other, eyes wide.
He had dodged the rock right before it hit him, but it still grazed his leg. Riley stood up, brushing off his pants as he moved to sit next to the other.
"As I was saying, you're doing it wrong." He smiled, picking up a stone and perfectly skipping it across the lake, "See?"
Riley smiled over at the other, his eyes sparkling just a little in the sunlight. He was pretty cute, with dyed platinum blonde hair falling in his eyes, which were a light green colour. Freckled dotted his cheeks, and had dimples that showed when he smiled. He was pretty thin and pale from years of fending for himself, but he did not care.
Grabbing another stone, Riley handed it to Henry.
"Hold it like this..."
He put a hand on the other's, guiding his fingers into the right position. Riley smiled, using his other hand to move the other's elbow, demonstrating how to throw the flat stone. "Just like this... quick movements. Now, let go."
He removed his hands, and the other boy let go, the stone skipping perfectly over the water.
"Perfect!"

It was often that the Ravenclaw found himself in embarrassing situations, whether it be accidentally spilling his milk on a sibling and having to run for his life, or walk into a closed door in his dormitory and have to endure the next few weeks of 'clumsy Reed' jokes from his roomates.
In this situation, the embarrassing aspect moved on quickly much to his chagrin. His attack on the boy was dismissed easily, something Henry was sure he'd be swung at for. It was a rock after all, it could've done some damage even if his throw was mediocre at best. As it luckily didn't harm the male, Henry let his feelings of hot, white embarrassment leave him in return for the exciting aspect of being taught how to skip stones properly. If there was something that could ever make Henry happy, it was learning something new.
Watching the male skip his stone, he'd bounced eagerly on the tip of his toes, ready to copy- but was stopped when the boy took it upon himself to help Henry physically, by adjusting the way he held the smooth stone and how he threw it. Heat rushed to Henry's pale face and he was glad that his hat and scarf could some of his now red skin. He gave a small 'woop' of victory when his stone managed to skip and not sink like usual. Turning to face the male, his face still sort of resembling a tomato, he'd grin.
"Thank you so much! I've been trying to do that forever. I'm Reed- or Henry. Henry Reed. Whichever."

"I'm Riley. Riley Williams. And no problem!" He smiled, his dimples showing through again.
A light blush fell across Riley's cheeks as he looked at the other. He struggled for words, clearing his throat a couple of times before looking away. He gazed out over the water and ran a hand through his hair, sighing lightly. In all honesty, he did not feel like getting up, but did feel a little bit awkward by staying with the other. I don't want to invade his space... He shifted his weight to look at the other again, and their eyes met.
"Sooo..." He blushed even darker, adjusting his scarf, "Which house are you in I guess?"
He probably could have sounded cooler asking that, played it off better, but being awkward was one of the things Riley did best, and that was just the way it was. And that moment, looking into the other's eyes, must have been one of his most awkward so far in his life.
He coughed, looking away to break the silence, "It really is very pretty out here. Do you come here a lot to like get away from it all? Cause this really is a great spot."

Itching at his cheek, as if that would get rid of the redness, he'd give a tight smile at Riley whilst answering his question. "I'm a Ravenclaw. But I'm not smart or anything- I think it was a mistake really. What about yourself?"
Henry had personally believed he would've been better in Hufflepuff, because he was too much of a coward to be in Gryffindor and apparently people 'like him' don't go in Slytherin. He'd heard whispers of rumours that go around the school, about the past of that house and Voldemort. He wasn't a fan and hadn't gone into more information than he needed to.
"It is beautiful, yeah..I walk round the entire grounds every few days, to remind myself how lucky I am that I'm here. This is where I finish and end up feeding the Squid sometimes, if I have anything on me. I was just thinking about how well it'll be surviving under the water if it ices over- but I mean, there's probably some magic contraption to ensure it gets fed and doesn't die out because I'm sure it's been around centuries and is a big part of Hogwart's history or something- what other place has a giant squid just living in their lake, none other that I know, but I do know tha-..Sorry. I ramble when I'm nervous. Feel free to tell me to shut up." He'd grimace, chewing on his bottom lip nervously.

Riley bit his lip as he looked up at the other, "No it's ok... actually it's kind of cute." He blushed even darker, realizing what he said.
"A-any ways... I'm a Gryffindor, but I honestly think I should have been a Slytherin. I'm not that brave or anything, and certainly not chivalrous in my opinion."
He only then realized how close they actually were sitting, and how silent the day was. Only the sound of the wind in the trees and the creatures in the lake could be heard, along with the sound of their breathing. Riley looked back out across the lake, still nervously chewing on his bottom lip as he nudged a large rock with his foot.
"Would you ever think of letting someone join you on a walk around the grounds? Not that I care or anything." He shrugged, skipping another stone across the smooth water before glancing back at the boy next to him.
Riley hoped he would say yes, but was not about to make it to obvious that he liked the boy seated next to him. At least not yet. Not until he figured some important things out. But as he looked at the other, he felt his heart begin to perform summersaults.

Henry'd raise an eyebrow at the cute comment, rather stunned by his opinion. As per usual, he wasn't one to hold back his mental notes. "It's been called stupid, annoying and even knowledgable but never cute. What a weird compliment. Thank you, Riley." Henry was rather oblivious to most things when it came to socialisation. Touches, actions and statements he could understand but he couldn't get the meaning behind them. Often, that type of information just flew on over his head. His mother always said he just had too many other things to worry about than what words mean.
"Maybe that's the point about the houses- half the time you don't realise what trait you actually have and your time at Hogwarts might reveal it. Like you say you think you could be in Slytherin, that could mean that you're just ambitious and cunning and know how to get what you want, but it doesn't mean you're any less brave. Perhaps being brave or chivalrous is secretly an important quality to you, or that you think others should have. I wouldn't know, I'm uh, I'm very new to this sort of thing."
He'd nod a few times, thinking over his own words. His seating position was simple, with his legs crossed and his back leant back slightly, his hands supporting him from behind whilst he looked across the lake. "I would think some company would be splendid, it can get lonely and it'd be nice to be around people my own age who talk to me rather than just wait around until I do something stupid."

Riley smiled, nodding happily. “It’s a date,” He exclaimed, looking over at the other, “How does... right now sound?”
His smile changed to a smirk, and he winked playfully at the cute boy sitting next to him. Riley usually was not this straightforward, but he realized early on that the other wasn’t going to be, and if he wanted anything to happen, he’d step up to the plate. And he definitely wanted this to happen.
“But I mean if you don’t want to, you don’t have to say yes... I could always just go.”
He hoped with everything in him that the other would want to hang out, but he still knew that he could never control the others answer. Which sucked for him since his own insecurities really truly believed that the other would laugh and say no. But... that did not really seem like something this boy would do. He seemed a lot nicer than what Riley was afraid of, and that calmed him a bit. Just a bit, his heart was still pounding heavily in his chest and head. But at least there was some false sense of security from these few minutes he had spent with Reed.
