Long Time, No See
Hogwarts was at its best in the winter, at least in Adam's mind. Counting the month of November, the season was almost overstocked with activities and events. Adam's thirteenth birthday had come and gone with a special excitement -- he was officially a teenager! Although the rest of November had, admittedly, started to get boring, he couldn't say that it was all that difficult. With new teachers still figuring out their lesson plans and finally starting to get settled in the school, classes weren't nearly as hard as they could be for this time of year. The castle was abuzz with holiday preparations; Hanukkah had just passed them by, and though Adam didn't celebrate it, he knew that there had been lots of celebration. Now it was full speed ahead towards Christmas as decorations started to go up and the anticipation of the holiday break slowly pushed its way into every classroom. Soon enough, it would start to snow, and being in such a fantastic place in that type of weather was like something out of a movie. Yes, the summer had done its damage, but it was winter time now. The only problem was the cold.
Adam shivered and drew his school robes tighter around himself, pulling his scarf up a little further until it almost covered his mouth. Keeping his head down and his hands shoved in his pockets, he moved quickly across the grounds from the herbology greenhouses. As the harsh December wind blew even harder into his face, he looked to see how far it was to the doors of the nice, warm castle. Whatever the distance might have been, it wasn't close enough. Narrowing his eyes and pressing forward in a battle against the wind, Adam was about to give in and drop his head back into the safety of his scarf when he noticed a familiar face.
Eri Windstone, though she'd been one of the first classmates Adam had met, had disappeared from his life at the castle around halfway through first year. It was a strange phenomenon, considering the experiences they'd shared with the manic boy of the Fens, but nonetheless it had happened. Adam hadn't heard from or of Eri in a long time. It was nice to be reminded of another friend in Ravenclaw, no matter how their relationship had started. He wondered what she'd been doing since they last talked, how she had spent her summer. If nothing else, her hair had been dyed, dark red mixed with white (not an old person's white, but more of a cool purposeful white). That was an exciting talking point! Having made up his mind, Adam changed course and jogged over to the girl.
"Eri!" he called. "Hey, Eri!" Breathing hard as the cold air burned in his lungs, he finally caught up and slowed down, smiling wide. "I haven't seen you in a while! How was your summer?" If there was anything Adam could do, it was talk to people. Strangers were all well and good for introductions, but sometimes it was just better to reconnect with old friends.

Long Time, No See
Eri was walking on the grounds looking for a place to sit and draw, when she heard a familiar voice. Once she turned around the voice had been identified. "Hey Adam. Summer went well I guess. How was your summer?" She asked while sitting down on a big rock. Lately she had been spending a lot of time on drawing and homework instead of meeting up with friends. Though Adam was omen of her first friends and he had stayed her friend even after what happened the first year. "Kaegen still thinks I'm a death wish and I'm pretty sure Eris still doesn't like me. How has your school year been going so far?"
The brunette wiped a piece of hair from her face. She had changed a little since the last time he had seen her. He seemed to have grown taller since the last time she had seen him. They were in the same house yet they never really saw each other in classes or their common room. Eri had wanted to see him, but never had the time and was glad they had ran into each other an drew could talk about their first year and catch up on lost time.

Sitting happily down next to her, Adam listened as Eri greeted him in return and touched up on some of the things still familiar to the two of them. In all honesty, he couldn't tell if her comments about Eris and Kaegen were meant to be taken seriously or not. Trapped uncomfortably in an awkward sort of half-laugh, he felt himself redden and smiled sheepishly. "I'm sure she doesn't....well, uh...Eris has changed a lot too. Besides, it was practically forever ago. Who can hold a grudge that long?" Pausing for a minute to wonder if his best friend really did have the ability to stay angry for such a remarkable amount of time, Adam shivered at the thought of it, pulling his robes closer to his chest -- although the cold had had nothing to do with this chill. "Kaegen, he's another story. I never know what's going on with that guy. If it makes you feel any better, there's a good chance he's moved on to another 'death witch' now."
On second thought, that probably didn't make her feel better at all. Taking a short, deep breath, Adam reoriented himself and grinned, bringing the conversation around back to summer activities. "Yeah, mine was okay too. Summer camp was really fun. Were you at the summer camp here? I don't think I saw you. Anyways, that went until around the end of July. I was in Paris for a while with my dad and my brother too. Nothing special." It wasn't saying much, but he didn't think that Eri would mind the lack of elaboration. There weren't very many extra details to add even if he chose to, right?
Second year, what little of it had already passed, was tremendously more interesting to talk about. "It's been great! I've gotten to know a lot of people better. Do you know Cecily Quinn? She's in Ravenclaw too, and I think we're getting to be a lot better friends. Who else...there's Rosie, Amadea, both Hufflepuffs, both super super nice. Eris, obviously, and you! I always forget how many people are in our year." Adam's train of thought was getting dangerously close to the edge of the rails, his concentration split between the cold weather, the list of names he'd just rattled off, and Eri herself. "Have you met anyone exciting since the train? There's so many people here I might never talk to all of them."

"It's fine. Though I normally find myself out on the grounds drawing. I don't talk much to people. I don't really try to make friends." The girl was still a little bit scarred by her first year. She had let a few people into her normally impenetrable shell and two of them now hate her. She was still scared to let anyone become that close to her in fear she might loose them. The past year and a couple months she had closed herself off from people and had no intentions of making close friendships with people. Adam was an exception. Some days she thinks he really is telling the truth that he was her friend. Other times she is scared that he is just trying to be nice.
"I went to summer camp. It was fun. I just stayed in my room and painted or drew. Then other days I went to library." That was cool that he went to Paris. "I've wanted to go to Paris. I heard the art there is magnificent."
Eri wiped a strand of hair from her face. "I know all of them. Rosie doesn't like me. Eris doesn't like me. Ami took me to the hospital wing after I fell off my broom during a pick up quidditch game. Cecily is nice. I guess I met a few first years and maybe some second years, but I usually just keep to myself."
