A Little Friendly Competition
Let it be known that Harmony Hollins was not one for physical activity, nor for putting herself in situations where the chances of being smacked into free fall or whacked in the face were, quite literally, sky high. So why was it, that after this day of magical education, the black-haired girl could be seen venturing down to the quidditch training pitch to watch people practice? Well, Hogwarts was a very magical place and most likely did something to her brain chemicals, because Harmony had decided she had an interest in Seeking for the quidditch team and wanted to know more! Therefore, she trudged her way on down.1 October 2023
Harmony liked to think she was above average at looking for things, except for when it came to her own belongings. Prepping for a show, any type of show, required a meticulous eye for detail. As well as that, Harmony had honed her eye to catch on particulars; a skill useful for when she needed to prove a point with a piece of literature or remind herself of something but had read so much that the titles all bled into one another. So, as she stood awkwardly to the side on the grass(no way was she climbing into the boxes for a few measly minutes), face pointed to the heavens, she gave herself things to look out for among the students. That one student has a discerning feature of their face? Look away, then look back and see how fast you can spot them again.
One would think, that with her steady focus and laser-beam eyes, she would have noticed the approach of flaming hair. Unfortunately for Harmony Hollins, the fault of wholeheartedly favouring extract questions over general questions was that her talent lay in picking out the details of her focus and not in noticing the entire human being placed just outside the question boundaries.Mentions: @Flynn Montgomery

Quidditch, now thats a game for everyone. Some might find football too slow and boring or say that Rugby is too predicable because it's played in a straight line but whatever opinions people have everyone can agree that Quidditch itches that sporting spot in everyones brains leading to even the most disinterested people taking note of the sport even if its just to find the new hot seeker on the Slytherin team.
With the little knowledge of the sport he had gathered from his mother over the years and seeing the little specks of people flying around such a grand colosseum from the castle windows lead Flynn to take a stroll to the training grounds after class one day to see what he could discover, if he's lucky he'll be able to find a player who can help give him insight to the game or at the very least he can finally bask in the game he was told was the grandest sport of all. While the stadium seemed fairly close to the castle in practise it was a bit further away then expected and as Flynn drew closer the already grand grandstands seemed to tower over him more than he expected. Flynns eyes couldn't be taken off the structures as the players darted in and around them as Flynn couldn't even the snitch they were chasing, because of unwavering fixation on the players above Flynn hadn't identified a small slip in the dirt below him which quickly broke his gaze as he stumbled forward slightly as he regained his balance. With his new found footing Flynn could take in his similarly heighten surroundings seeing the vast grass patches no doubt used for various stalls of confectionary and delights, as the path snaked towards the mouth of the stadium Flynn noticed an ever present sight. Hermione Hollows. Or at least Flynn would assume its her seeing the small dark haired girl standing slightly away from the pitches area of view so as not to attract any accidental attention.
"Hermioneeeee" Flynn shouts though it becomes quite apparent he is still too far away to be heard. As he picks up his pace from a brisk walk to a respectable jog he decides to give one more attempt at grabbing her attention
"HERMIONEEEEEEEE" nope still nothing. That's fine easier to get up close to talk about things anyways. wait maybe this isn't Hermione, as Flynn pondered the possibility of this outcome he was already within a few feet of whoever it was so theres no backing down now. Worst comes to worst I've got a new potential friend.
"Heyyyy Hermione, I didn't know you liked quidditch, I'm still learning do you know if you could teach me anything?" Flynn definitely knew this was Hermione, no one else gives him the cold shoulder as much as she does.

“Heyyyy Hermione,” a voice sounded from behind Harmony, finally alerting her to the presence of Finn behind her. “I didn’t know you liked quidditch,” neither did Harmony “I’m still learning, do you know if you could teach me anything?”1 October 2023
Harmony very nearly lost track of the most recent student she’d tasked herself with seeking but managed to regain control of her eyeballs, even with the new surge of adrenaline, and turned her face towards Finnigan the slightest bit, eyes still tracking. It was only a brief moment before she located the student, and upon confirmation that it was the correct student with the correct characteristic, she turned her head the rest of the way to reluctantly look at the eager boy. This was a little unfortunate, wasn’t it?
“Uh well,” Harmony began, immediately turning her gaze back to the field so she didn’t twist her head off, “there’s a seeker who looks for the snitch, and chasers who handle the quaffle and beaters who beat bludgers? And, uh, if you catch the snitch you get a bunch of points and the game ends.” She trailed off into silence.
Yes, she was interested in becoming a seeker (maybe. That was still a hard maybe) but quidditch was still a sport and neither of her parents were sport-inclined either, so Harmony wasn’t the biggest expert on the sport she was now beginning to regret coming down to watch. Maybe if Fallon didn’t have anything else to say, she could decide the few moments she had were enough and head back to her dorm where it was warm and quiet - although, wasn’t there that situation with the snake and book and punching a few days ago? Oh well, she’d just have to inspect the Common Room before passing through.

After nothing more then a quick glance in his direction Hermione returned her gaze back to the field as she started on a reply to his question
"there’s a seeker who looks for the snitch, and chasers who handle the quaffle and beaters who beat bludgers? And, uh, if you catch the snitch you get a bunch of points and the game ends.” slowly as the words left her mouth they ended with an unsatisfying silence that felt like an invisible barrier between the two of them. Well, that could've gone better could've gone a lot worse as well. As Flynn stood there in the brisk autumn breeze each gust of wind an icy stab like the look of disinterest from Hermione. The awkwardness didn't falter as Flynn took one last attempted at forging or rekindling this friendship that he didn't really understand but something in his mind, either his stubbornness or his interest, told him he needed to keep trying when everything felt against it. He leaned against the object to give himself a more relaxed posture and decided to talk about the only inescapable event at Hogwarts right now that was on everyones lips, the fall ball. Surely somewhere in her mind she would give it some thought and might even strike up more than a sentence out of her. It was all he had left so he had to try.
"Well no doubt you've heard of the fall ball coming up, got a date or anything or have you just decided not to go?" it was very basic, probably not the best or even right thing to say, maybe with more time he'd have been able to formulate a better sentence but as the words left his mouth he had to deal with the consequences of whatever response he received.

Harmony’s eyebrows raised the slightest bit in response to Flynn beginning to ask about the Fall Ball. Was he trying to hint at something? The answer was probably no, but there was just something about this Montgomery that consistently dissolved all Harmony’s already abysmal common sense into thin air.1 October 2023
“Got a date or anything?” He was asking. Harmony’s eyebrows quirked up just the slightest bit more as she turned her head also the tiniest bit to glance for just the most miniscule of seconds before- “or have you just decided not to go?” WOAH Harmony thought, attitude-ly. THE ATTITUDE OF THIS BOY, the quite unjustified shock causing her to finally turn and look him in the eye with minimal discomfort, her own eyes widened in an almost, but not quite, comically incredulous look.
“Well, for your information,” she announced, “I don’t have a date, and I wasn’t going to go. But now, I think I will. I don’t expect you’ve got anyone to go with either.” If the eleven-year-old logic, a little bit of pride, and the redhead had not been messing with her brain cells, maybe Harmony would have realised that the one time she decided to speak up around Flint could definitely have been approached and worded better. But they were. So she didn’t. So here we are.

There it was, a spark, a chance, as Hermione had finally given him the light of day as she whipped herself around with an expression of half confusion and half contempt. Flynn jumped internally at seeing this otherwise unheard of reaction from Hermione, externally Flynn managed to hide his excitement behind a slight smirk and a small breath of relief, while the reaction wasn't entirely positive, it was something and Flynn could at least try to work with something.
"Well, for your information, I don't have a date, and I wasn't even going to go. But now, I think I will. I don't expect you've got anyone to go with either." Harsh but fair, as much as Flynn was an outgoing character he was yet to form any meaningful relationships with anyone let alone to ask them to go to ball. While the statement was definitely more of a harsh remark than an invitation to continue the conversation Flynn thought he's got this far he may as well test his luck again.
"Me? having someone to go to ball with? nah not yet unfortunately" Flynn admitted "you on the other hand I am surprised you have no one to go with surely there's someone out there who you could go with? Can't have gone all this time and you still have no one to go with" Flynn dragged the "all" for a slight dramatic effect, while Flynn was genuinely surprised he thought it best to remain composed and chill so as not to scare Hermione with being too energetic like he usually is. While secretly Flynn wanted to go to ball with Hermione he awaited her response to see if it was even a possibility.

Somehow, Harmony was having a conversation with Flan Montgomery. Yes, it was powered by salt on the girl’s side and possibly innocent obliviousness on the boy’s, but it was a conversation, nevertheless, and Harmony was not about to lose. If losing was something you could even do in a conversation. It didn’t matter! What mattered was not losing.1 October 2023
Her eye was briefly caught by someone swooping overhead on their broom as Finn responded that he didn’t have a date either and that he was “surprised you have no one to go with”, whatever that meant. Surely he’d seen the state of her social life, what with eager First Years giving her weird nicknames and Second Years throwing hands in her vicinity. He must have been jabbing at her, Harmony somehow decided. Surely he was poking at her also having no one to go with by making ironic statements about the wide option pool she had to select from. Surely. Definitely.
“Can’t have gone aaaaall this time and you still have no one to go with”, he was saying.
“Oh, d’you think so?” Harmony challenged responded, a stupid anxious-and-eleven-years-old sentence forming in her mind. “How about you go with me? What about that?” Bet he didn’t see that coming, She thought smugly. Problem: solved. She now had a date, so Fallon’s point, whatever it was supposed to be, was proven null. You don’t challenge a challenger.

Yes, there it is, an actual conversation forming between the two, and with such vigour and energy as well, this is exactly what Flynn was hoping for when he wanted to talk to someone. His body seemed to tense up in anticipation and excitement as Hermione's mere gaze with the flame in her eyes burnt an image right into his retinas. All this time spent trying to get a peep out of the girl and now it feels as tho he has opened the flood gates as they stand there feet apart and Hermione was actually talking to him. While to most it would seem like the most standard of conversation to Flynn this was his opportunity to actually turn her from an acquaintance to a proper friend. His first proper Hogwarts friend.
"How about you go with me? What about that?" Oh, boy, yes. This time he couldn't contain himself as a he beamed a smile from ear to ear once those words bounced around his head long enough. As a way of solidifying this new pact between the two of them Flynn extended his arm in an act of agreement "DEAL" he admittedly said a little too loud as he let his excitement slip a little. While the chaos of the quidditch continued to rumble around them the two of them stood in their own time warp suspended in their own world waiting to see if Hermione will accept the oath he had brought forward to complete the pact between them.

Harmony buzzed with the prospect of this competition, whatever it was. No more scared Harmony! She was a ruthless challenger, unafraid of the unknown, and most importantly, of eager schoolmates who made friends very abruptly!1 October 2023
Finnigan’s face stretched into a smile that, in Harmony’s opinion, was far too smug and pleased for the occasion, and he stuck out his hand to shake on the deal. He clearly thought Harmony would chicken out and not be able to follow through on her words. Well! He had another thing coming, and Harmony clasped and shook before she could second-guess her way out, squeezing firmly and shaking once like only the most pro of competitors did.
The smile on Flint’s face never dropped. If anything, it had only grown in self-satisfaction. Something’s up, Harmony thought, alarm bells ringing in her mind. Could it be that she had completely misread the situation? He wasn’t smiling in anticipation of watching Harmony stutter and take back her words, was he? And then she understood.
He thought she was only doing this for the challenge and that she would have a terrible time and be a terrible partner at the ball and he was going to have such fun watching her regret her decisions, calling her nicknames all the while! She was not going to stand for that, oh no. Harmony Hollins was going to prove this dude so wrong and have the best time at the ball and be an even better partner than whatever it was Foyin was planning to do. Out of spite, of course.
She gave him a final once-over and twitched her eyebrows up in farewell.
“See ya”
Then she turned and trudged her way back up to the castle. It was freezing and she’d gotten the information she needed and more. There were things to be done. Evenings to be prepared for.
All for the competition, of course
