Give It Back!
Remy fixed the yellow and black scarf that rested around his neck. He had forgotten to take his own back from his acquaintance, Dinara Lucey, the wild Hufflepuff girl that he had met not that long ago. As the time passed, he became quite attached to the scarf. It smelled pleasantly sweet. Although, Remy preferred his own scent over anything, for it smelled like a mixture of his favorite desserts.
The boy wrapped his fingers around the branch and pushed himself up. Albeit he was very fast, flexible and agile, he was never too strong due to his slender lanky build. Struggling a bit to get himself on the branch, he finally succeeded and sat on it comfortably. He leaned his back against the trunk and let out a loud exhale that could be interpreted as a sigh. Once he had finally caught his breath, he started reaching for the little bag that he had brought with himself today. Rummaging through it, he finally found what he wanted. Perhaps not wanted, more like needed.
He had fallen behind once again with homework. Often idly sitting and not paying attention in classes and skipping homework, it was inevitable. Now he had this large load to uncover in a few days before he'd have to start skipping something. Opening his book and starting to go through his astronomy homework, he felt his eyelids and head get heavier after a mere twenty minutes. Why must it be so boring, stuffing one's nose in a book? Well, Remy speculated it was because of his hatred towards things being shoved down his throat. You could take something like music that he held dear to his heart. If you'd try to shove music down his throat, he'd just run away. If you tried to deny something from him, he'd be especially interested in doing this. This would often frustrate people around him, as Remy would always do the opposite that you told him to do.
Remy stared blankly at the text, unable to focus. The words printed in black ink were not printing themselves in his brain. He had to read one paragraph over and over again due to his inability to concentrate on this simple task. He lazily shifted his gaze towards the insides of his little bag and what it contained. It was his clever idea to bring a more entertaining book with him, just in case he finished earlier than he was supposed to. What he had actually done now was tempt himself to throw astronomy away and dive into the sin. And so he did, taking out his copy of Thaïs by Anatole France, he shoved his homework back where it came from. Opening the book from about the middle, he already felt more relaxed.

The weather had only gotten colder in the past days, and Dinara had been forced to don the scarf that proudly bore the striking green and silver colours that were so distinctive of the Slytherin house. Her fellow Hufflepuffs had teased her endlessly about it -- As much as Dinara hated being teased by anyone, really, she couldn't do anything about it. She had even contemplated sending the boy an owl; but the young procrastinator never did get around to doing so. The scarf, while of the wrong House colours for Dinara, still served it's primary purpose: keeping her warm. Plus, it didn't hurt that it smelled of desserts, either. Who doesn't love desserts?
Sighing, Dinara kicked up little tufts of dirt as she dug her heel into the ground. That was likely the reason why Dinara's shoes (yes, even brand new ones!) tended to look worn out after just a few days' uses. The girl could never just sit still with nothing to do -- Once she had a task she'd put her absolute focus to it until it was complete. This of course, came with it's benefits and consequences. It was one of the reasons why Dinara stayed on top of all her classes relatively well. That, and her yearning for the admiration of her classmates and professors. However, it also resulted in her being rather myopic in trying to achieve her goals at times; it's incredibly difficult to get Dinara to drop something once she has committed to it.
She eventually found herself retracing her steps back to a tall tree, where she'd once ran to hide after having lost her voice. It was also then that Dinara realised Enid Blyton's books of woodland fun were all a bunch of lies. Lying on the branches of trees was nowhere near as comfortable as how the children's author had illustrated it to be! The insects, the rough bark, and the wobbly twigs! Awful!
Dinara threw a distasteful glance at the tree, ready to return back to her Common Room. If she hadn't heard wrongly, she was sure the First Years were about to throw a Exploding Snap competition; and the girl was determined to win it all. For bragging rights, if not for anything else.
With a toss of her head, she turned and started to walk away. Until a small brown flurry dashed by her, gently grazing the side of her foot. Startled, the girl jumped back, yelling out curses (not the magic ones!) at the small thing. The blur of movement stopped for a brief second; enough for Dinara to identify the unknown entity as...
A squirrel.
A perfectly ordinary, brown squirrel.
It stared up at Dinara with intelligent eyes. She stared back it, wondering what was going on in it's furry little mind. Wait, don't squirrels hibersomething in Winter? Scratching her head, she cautiously stepped closer towards the little animal. In turn, it started to clamber up that tall tree. Curious, Dinara started to chase after it; her nimble arms stretching out and hoisting herself up, branch by branch.
The squirrel may have moved at an incredible pace, but Dinara was keeping up pretty well against a woodland creature who'd lived its whole life amongst the trees. Flexibility was one of Dinara's stronger suits, and she leapt lightly from branch to branch, tracking the movement of the squirrel. She'd quite enjoyed climbing trees, the children in her hometown used to play what they'd call "Tree Tag" -- a casual game of tag, with the small twist of playing it amongst the trees and never on the ground.
Amidst her clambering and her yells of excitement, she had neglected to notice the presence of a familiar, raven-haired boy wearing a mustard yellow scarf. She had also neglected to notice that her climbing, as graceful and as well executed as it was, had shaken down numerous leaves onto the lower branches -- a large portion of those leaves landing on the boy.

He was so focused on his book that he actively closed everything else out of his mind. Nothing could stop him now, right? Remy liked to think of himself as one of the characters in every story. Everything became more vivid that way and he'd get sucked into the book. Remy felt very comfortable sitting on the branch. There were no insects in here for they were all asleep for the winter.
He fit very well in there and felt warm, and he wasn't even wearing a coat! Apparently, Remy was very familiar with the cold and his senses stopped responding to it at some point. The boy was wearing black jeans and a navy blue sweatshirt (he had thought that it was black too but learned that it was a bad idea to dress in the dark, and that navy blue was his worst enemy) that was slightly too big for him. He loved having those too long sleeves that he could flip around. The boy affectionately called them 'sweaterpaws'. He also had his glasses on, something he regretted since they were getting all foggy in the cold air.
He started sinking on his seat, getting his quality me-time. Remy was just about to go to the next page before he heard yelling in the distance and a little bunch of leaves fell on top of his head and book. Ignoring the yelling, for now, he swooped the leaves away and picked them out of his untamable hair. Trying to focus on the interesting plot of Thaïs he tried to close down the noises. But they got louder and louder. Whoever was climbing in there surely was very loud. By this time, he was covered with leaves and found himself unable to concentrate anymore.
He slammed the book's covers together, signaling that he was real pissed now. Who dared to disturb his deep slumber only to shake the last dead leaves on this tree on him? He tried to peek to get a glimpse of the perpetrator. He couldn't see the face but he could see an emerald green and silver scarf glimmering in the light. Remy narrowed his eyes and muttered something under his breath about those damned Slytherins, before realizing that he was one of the damned Slytherins too. Taking a closer look, he saw the familiar bouncy and wild curls. It took a little while for him to try and rummage through his brain for a Slytherin that had hair like that. Right, it wasn't a Slytherin, was it?
He felt his heart sink the moment he realized who this was. Remy rolled his eyes as he noticed what the girl was chasing after. "Leave the squirrel alone, I doubt it wants to be followed by you," he commanded, his voice monotonous but commanding. He tried to remove the leftover leaves in his hair but to his dismay, some of them were stubborn and decided to settle in there. Whatever, they were just leaves. Opening the book again, he fixed the Hufflepuff scarf that originally belonged to her and resumed reading.

The monotonous drone of a familiar voice snapped Dinara out of her frenzy. Hanging from one of the high tree branches, she looked down to see a familiar mop of black hair. In her chase, Dinara hadn't realised just how many leaves she had displaced -- On the young, snarky boy as well as in her own curls.
His voice brought her back down to reality, shaking her out of her little fantasy that she had conjured up in her mind while she was chasing the squirrel. Dinara, friend of all woodland animals, on the journey to capture the michevious rebel Mr. Nutty who had stolen all the animals' Christmas presents! She often conjured up little scenarios like this in her head, pretending that she was the main character of these situations. It helped to fuel her energy, and it very much prevented her from being bored!
"...Remy?
A pair of curious eyes peeked at him from behind one of the clusters of (dying) leaves. Leaping from the branch to one that was right above Remy's, she landed lightly near the base of the branch. Cocking her head, she leaned back over the branch, her legs draping over the branch and supporting her weight as she hung upside down; not unlike a stunt that Spiderman would do. Her mane of curls bounced down with her, partially obscuring her vision as a few loose strands fell atop her face.
"Why read here? It's so... Uncomfortable.
Dinara pursed her lips as she recounted her own experience with the tree. Absolutely traumatising. Shuddering a little, she quickly dismissed the traumatic memory before her eyes landed on the leaves that had made themselves very much at home atop Remy's hair. Unaware of the many more leaves that were stuck in her own hair, a giggle escaped her lips as she picked them out for him. It was her fault that so many dead leaves were displaced in the first place, but even if it weren't, she would have done it anyway.
Growing up, Dinara had always been taught to help where she could. If her older brother needed help, she should help out of respect and basic courtesy. If her younger sister needed help, she should help out of responsibility and care for the younger ones. If anything were to go wrong because of her, she should help to fix the mistakes that she had made.
As she carefully picked the leaves from the boy's hair, the scarf that was loosely slung around her neck had fallen into the boy's lap. Dinara wasn't exactly in the best position to reach for it, but she figured the scarf had missed its owner and wanted to get back ASAP.
"It's a good thing I ran into you, too. I think your scarf misses you!"
Dinara grinned as she nodded towards the emerald scarf that lay snugly in Remy's lap, seemingly happy to be reunited with its owner. She wondered if her scarf missed her, too. Though many people may scoff at her for treating her objects as if they were sentient, the lass believed that there was some kind of magic and attachment to objects. Perhaps there really was, or perhaps it's just the over-active imagination of an 11-year-old child.

He lazily shifted his gaze towards the girl that had apparently spotted him only after he opened his mouth. She mentioned his name like it was a question, receiving a tilt of his head. What was it now that she wanted? Just a sight of her made him feel all riled up and ready for a new challenge. After all, she was a rival, wasn't she? He was not sure what to classify her as. Friend or foe? Stranger or not? Somehow this now-rival often occupied Remy's thoughts. He was curious about her and how she lived in a different way from his life.
"Remy," he announced his name in an intonation that sounded like he was answering her question. Yes, he was Remy indeed. He rolled his name off his tongue very pleasantly, adding his little Romance language spice. He had never fully gotten rid of his accent, nor he really planned to. It was the little piece of his history that he still carried with himself. His little monkey friend decided to pull one of those action-movie hero moves and hand upside down right next to him. It reminded him of that one awkward Spiderman scene he had seen once. Bleh, only losers liked cheesy superheroes like that.
Watching her curly strands of hair that usually framed her face bend to the wills of gravity, he couldn't help but see the leaves in the midst of her hair too. He felt the urge to snicker and tease her about it, until he realized that he too had a raven's nest on top of his head. She could use one of those pretty hair ornaments that held one's hair together and helped with the whole 'obscured vision' thing. She pointed out how uncomfortable it was in here, and Remy shook his head lightly.
"It's not. I think it's rather comfortable, warm and pleasantly silent in here. Good place to come and focus on something one would like to do," he blinked slowly, waiting for her response that would probably try and argue against what he said. Whatever floated her boat, he did not care that much about her opinion on the comfortability of tree trunks. He was feeling just fine!
When she extended her hand, he flinched a bit. Nothing about her was scary, she was just intense. He wasn't sure what to think about her. Eventually he got used to her touch and closed his eyes as she had to rip the leaves off his hear. He let out a bunch of soft 'Ouch' noises under his breath. When she was done, he looked in her eyes that were always glimmering with some type of youthful vigor. Where did she get all this energy from? He wasn't the most passive person either, but he loved his more serene moments just as much as the insane horsing around.
He returned the gesture by softly and carefully picking the leaves from her hair too. Her hair seemed just as wild as his. Remy was careful not to pull too hard or it would hurt. He didn't know how sensitive her scalp was! He had totally ignored the scarf for now, but once he was done, he finally looked down. Right, this was his and the one on her was hers. He felt a bit flattered that she had worn his sweet, beloved scarf. It was an important item to him, and to share it with someone? Special!
"I hope you don't mind that I wore yours too," he started unraveling the scarf on his shoulders. Once he was done, he looked at Dinara for a while. He looked in her eyes, eye contact not faltering. If he'd look down first, he would have lost and showed a sign of weakness, no? Tying the scarf around her (contemplating if he should choke her here and now to resume his peaceful reading), he removed her hair that had been tied to her neck with the scarf.
"You should get down before all your blood runs to your head and you'll eventually die," Remy reminded her and opened his book again. Perhaps she'd join him, perhaps she could do his homework while he would read more enjoyable things.

Dinara had never been the most observant person. Heck, she was far from it. That would also explain why, throughout their extensive conversations with one another, this was the first time that Dinara had noticed the boy's rather unusual accent. She didn't know what exactly it was, but all she knew that it sounded different from hers. Not in a bad way, though; it was just another thing that made the boy more distinctive in Dinara's mental 'address book'.
His refute of Dinara's point on how uncomfortable the tree off simply bounced off her. She would be having none of that nonsense -- In fact, her legs were already starting to itch from the rough bark that pressed against her otherwise smooth skin. Trees were made for climbing, not to sit in and rest in! Shaking her head, she broke off a small piece of bark and pressed in into Remy's hand to prove her point.
"I don't see how this rough thing can be comfortable. It's so blegh."
Sticking her tongue out, Dinara's shoulder slumped alongside her speech. Truly, the girl was full of theatrics that could transform even the most casual of conversations to something way more entertaining! Besides, whatever the boy lacked in terms of reactions and facial expressions, Dinara could more than make up for it.
Remy's flinch caught Dinara off-guard, and she faltered slightly. Did he mind that she was touching his hair? Was he perhaps especially sensitive about his hair? As she picked out the last of the leaves from his hair (which seemed almost as messy as her own, something Dinara never thought possible for people blessed with naturally straight hair), she drew back slightly. Looking down rather sheepishly, Dinara barely managed to choke out an apology; something that was incredibly hard for the proud girl.
"I-... Uh, I'm s-sorry. If you don't like me touching you, just tell me. I won't do it again.
Her voice was uncharacteristically soft, and she couldn't bring herself to look the boy in the eyes as she said that. It was his flinch that somehow made Dinara feel... Unwanted. It didn't matter that she wasn't particularly pretty, or particularly well-behaved; her displays of affection (be it physical or not) had hardly been rejected by anyone. That alone was enough to make her feel wanted and included.
To her surprise, Remy had mirrored her actions and started picking leaves out from her hair as well! She didn't think he'd do something like that -- His touch was unexpectedly gentle for someone who seems to be so aloof all the time. Somehow, watching him as he delicately pulled out the leaves in his hair seemed to show a softer side of the boy that Dinara had never seen before. It was quite fascinating, really, to see such a stark contrast in the boy as opposed to his usual, mocking self. The sudden mention of the scarves shook her out of her observations and Dinara shrugged casually; though she was surprised that Remy would wear the Hufflepuff scarf so blatantly. There was something else too -- though she didn't think much into it. The girl wasn't so introspective to realise that their small exchange of scarves had actually meant something to her despite her self-declared status of Remy as her rival. Trying her best to keep a nonchalant face, Dinara replied rather dismissively.
"Well, we all need to keep warm, somehow.
His unbreaking gaze caused her cheeks to tint pink, though Dinara would never admit that. Blame it on the cold; it was a convenient excuse as to why she'd blush from that. Most people wouldn't stare and maintain eye contact for so long, Dinara was usually the one who caused people to look away first! She stubbornly stared back, refusing to back away from such a blatant challenge, though she inexplicably felt her cheeks getting warmer and warmer. Eventually, she took his remark as a getaway and quickly looked away, preparing to return to an upright position. It was a good time to do so too, her legs were starting to feel numb.
Sighing, she hoisted herself back to sitting in an upright position; lightly lowering herself to sit on the same branch as Remy. It was a good thing that this tree was sturdy enough to support both their weights and Dinara's clambering; she mouthed a silent apology to the tree for shaking off so many of it's leaves. It vaguely reminded her of her balding neighbour, Mr Poggin, a typically good-natured man who had shaken his fist and yelled at her after she had snipped off what little of his hair that had remained.
She looked over at the book that the boy was so deeply engrossed in. Dinara barely made out the title of the book from the cover as she squinted at it. Thaïs by Anatole France. Confused, she peered over from the top of his book, wrinkling her nose as she looked down the walls of text that greeted her. It seemed rather boring, what with the plain looking cover and the small, tiny words that decorated the pages of the book. Dinara had much preferred books about fantasy, magic and fairies!
"What's the book about? It looks kinda boring. Do you have to read it for a lesson, perhaps?"
While the girl's statement could have been perceived as rather rude by some, the genuine curiosity in her voice shone through. Dinara may offend some people from time to time (especially the more sensitive ones), but her intentions were never bad. In fact, most of her statements barely pass through a brain filter before they fly out of her mouth!

He would find something to fight about in every topic. Especially if his opponent was someone who made him feel the same way as she did. He felt very conflicted every time he was in her presence. He was often amused when Dinara was around, but he also felt like she made him huff and cross his arms way more than anyone else did. He had stopped trying to get her to submit to him with insults. He had found out that it was rather ineffective and she was stubborn like a bull.
She disagreed with him about the conveniences of chilling on tree branches. He let out a disagreeing grunt and just shook his head once again. Everything that came out of her mouth was so wrong in his books, he was beginning to wonder if she was doing it on purpose. Of course, Remy's opinion was the factual, right one. Anyone who conflicted with that was just a simpleminded fool.
"Well, I find it peaceful in here. Sorry, found," attempting to run his fingers through his hair, only for them to get stuck. Eventually, he gave up.
She pressed a piece of bark in his hand when he wasn't looking. He looked at it and pet it as if it was alive to see her point. Perhaps she just had sensitive skin while he was used to these kinds of things grazing against his skin. Looking at her as she displayed a theatrical performance on her face, the corners of his mouth tugged ever so slightly upwards. She was ridiculous, but he did similar kinds of things around his inner circle. Remy was very dramatic and liked to inflate things to get everyone's attention towards himself. He'd often win the fights against his siblings. Pretending to be very hurt by his brothers and appeasing to his parents, he'd often dodge punishment this way.
"Don't hurt the tree, it's sleeping. It hasn't done anything bad to you, has it?" he said, curious to hear her story if she had one. He had a feeling that she would be a fun storyteller. At least her impressive body language and expressions hinted to him that she too loved to seek entertainment from being dramatic. Thrilling stories around the dark Christmas time would always lighten Remy up and elevate the mood.
She seemed to be rather hurt by his flinch. He just couldn't help it! Albeit he was a very rowdy person who didn't find shoving strangers and acquaintances around unnatural to him, he was afraid of touch. Afraid of touch that was not initiated by him. He knew what he was capable of physically, and the idea of someone doing the same to him? Err...not that nice. He sometimes reflected on this and pondered if he should do that. He always came to the not so nice conclusion that he was above everyone in this, he could do whatever he wanted and just had to be careful that no one else would do the same to him! Survival of the fittest indeed.
"I'm not uncomfortable with touch," his tone was oddly defensive. He found apologies to be awkward. She didn't strike him as a type to apologize to the types of him! The boy didn't want to be seen as some kind of a weakling. He was a strong, pure brute power! He didn't comment on her blushing cheeks that he just started noticing. His pale skin was often a disadvantage. Albeit he rarely got sunburns, the hot red cheeks were very visible on his skin. Be it embarrassment, anger or the aftermath of being complimented, his cheeks were suddenly flushed!
She listened to his suggestions for once and ascended back to his level. He was surprised she did not go against him and just hang for even longer until she'd faint and he'd have to roll his eyes again.
"Your scarf has got my scent all over it now. Hope you enjoy gingerbread," he pointed out. Who wouldn't love gingerbread? Remy especially loved building constructs and decorating a gingerbread house with intricate little details made of candy and that liquid, sugary paste! As she ascended, he grabbed her wrist and placed it on his hair, pet his own head with her hand for a while to prove that he wasn't afraid of contact. He didn't explain the motive behind this odd interaction and quickly released her.
She leaned forward to look at the book that he had tried to finish many times now. Remy would often start a book, get bored of it and then start reading it again after a few months. He shifted his gaze from the book to her eyes again. Did her curiosity know no end? He was jealous, the most curious were always the smartest and creative. "Looks boring for simpletons like you," he teased her, putting his posh accent on and pushing his glasses further up his nose, making fun of himself in the process.

Puffing out her cheeks, the little lioness placed her hands on her hips huffily. He found it peaceful? Why, the nerve of him! Her presence should've been an honour for him -- Dinara could be back in the Hufflepuff Common Room and earning bragging rights for being the first winner of the weekly Exploding Snap competition! Feeling rather annoyed, she shot a piercing glare at the annoyance.
"Well, if you didn't want me here you could've very well just said so. I have places to be! Competitions to win! Bragging rights to earn!"
Dinara announced that with an air of arrogance about her, very evidently proud of the fact that she had places to go and people to see. To her, it was important to know and be known by as many people as possible. How else would she gain acceptance, then? Rolling her eyes at Remy, she started to chew her bottom lip rather absentmindedly. She wondered if he genuinely found her company tiresome -- If that were truly the case, then Dinara didn't want to be around him either! What you don't know won't hurt you, so why forcefully insert yourself in situations where you're unwanted?
Remy didn't seem to react to the rough bark scratching against his skin, which earned a surprised look from Dinara. This is it. He is absolutely an android. Letting out a soft sigh of frustration (which very frankly sounded more like a hiss than anything), she plucked out more pieces of bark and started to chuck them at the floor beneath them. Eventually, she decided to form a phrase with the bare spaces which she had stripped of the bark. Now stripping the bark with a purpose, Dinara was determined for the paler wood beneath to form the phrase 'Din's The Best'. Now, she'd truly have left her legacy on this tree!
At Remy's mention of the tree, she stopped work on her masterpiece and dramatically threw her hands up in the air. Where should she begin? If the girl had truly taken the time to reflect and be honest with herself, she'd find that her bad experience was actually a result of her own mood and a particularly bad day rather than the tree itself. All the same, Dinara's made it her prime purpose in life to entertain those around her. She launched into a tale of drama and sorrow -- Though if one were to truly be honest, the girl was simply making a mountain out of a molehill!
"It was horrible. I felt so alone and small. No, I'm not talking about my size; but the tree itself made it so much worse! I was sitting here, all along, and this tree has the AUDACITY to house so many happy little critters who were mocking my sorrow. My voice was gone, I couldn't talk and I was stuck in this uncomfortable place with insects because there wasn't anywhere else to hide!
Dinara's tale was truly one made for the stage. Well, at least her retelling of it was. Truth is, the girl had simply lost her voice, felt miserable about it and decided to hide in the tree only to realise that it wasn't quite to her comfort at that point in time (it's still not the comfiest of places now, but Dinara often valued company over setting). Though the actual recount of events would have been quite boring, Dinara's animated gestures and the rise and falls of her voice made the story incredibly dynamic. At the conclusion of her dramatic retelling, she angrily stripped off another piece of bark just to showcase how absolutely frustrated she was. Of course, she still did so carefully; making sure that it didn't affect her masterpiece in any way.
The area seemed strangely silent after the girl stopped talking and went back to carving her phrase in the tree trunk. The boy's words about not being uncomfortable with touch vaguely registered in her mind, which stopped her in her tracks for a brief moment. If he wasn't uncomfortable with touch, then she supposed he must have disliked her quite a fair bit for him to flinch away! Though that was far from the truth, Dinara had somehow landed on that conclusion and it made her rather upset. If he didn't enjoy her presence, why wouldn't he just say so?
Quicky retrieving her scarf back, Dinara avoided eye contact as she muttered a soft thanks under her breath; refusing to comment on the fact that she loved gingerbread. The girl now seemed dejected; she was incredibly confused about Remy's intentions. He seemed to-the-point enough to state directly if he didn't like someone -- Dinara would know, she's about as blunt as they come, yet he didn't seem to say anything that vaguely implied that he disliked her. His actions seemed to tell a different story, though.
Out of nowhere, he grabbed her hand and placed it atop his head of ebony hair before releasing it almost as quickly as he had grabbed it. Once again, another confusing act by the one and only Remy Alto. Dinara was beginning to feel rather frustrated; she's never had this much problem trying to understand someone else before! He was like a little Rubik's Cube that she couldn't solve, yet somehow she enjoyed trying to crack this enigma before her even though it frustrated her to no end.
Dinara sat upright, her lips thinning to form a grimace. A simpleton? She almost she wished she had her report card with her as some form of proof, she took extreme pride in her work.
"Well, Mr Posh, I'll have you know I'm actually a straight Os student. Who are you calling a simpleton? I am a well-educated, refined lady.
As she said that, Dinara put on a fake posh accent as well; though that in itself was incredibly badly executed. Though she said it jokingly, the young girl genuinely did take pride in the fact that she did well in school. It's an achievement that has earned her the admiration of many, afterall!

What was that fish with those puffy cheeks named again? Bubble eye? Or perhaps those porcupinefish that liked to inflate their cheeks? That was what she reminded him of. He had seen one in those big aquariums that he visited while he still studied at his muggle school. He did not have many happy memories about muggle schools nor aquariums. First of all, he felt bad for all the animals that were trapped in those small tanks. As interesting and beautiful they were, he would rather let them be free and never see them than keep those animals in aforementioned tanks just for his entertainment. Remy might have lacked sympathy towards people, but animals were easier to care for. They didn't have complex emotions that he'd have to work to understand. No reading between the lines.
He also had rather negative memories about his muggle school. Strictly Roman Catholic all-boys school with harsh punishments and run by nuns. Remy hated that place with a burning passion. He loved to prance and kid around like people his age should. He loved to pull pranks and messing around with everyone. He would always mock the nuns by pulling his shirt over the back of his head to mimic their clothing and flailing his cross necklace around. Maybe that school was the reason for his aversion towards girls. He just did not know how to act around them and had never been exposed to any girl of his age. This girl was talking something about bragging rights and competitions. Of course, his interest was piqued with the latter word, evident as a certain glimmer in his eyes.
"Sometimes I wonder, why on Earth are you in Hufflepuff? Thought they were humble," he thought about all the Hufflepuffs he knew. Most of them were mellow, soft, meek and gentle people. She reminded him of Gryffindors. Later on, she revealed that she succeeded very well in academics. Why wasn't she in Ravenclaw then? What a true oddity, Remy would have not been surprised and would believe her if she would tell him that she was a hatstall.
"Besides, I never said that I don't enjoy your company. If you want to go though, you're very free to do so," he said, his voice sounding a bit defensive again. Remy was just as confused as she was. Who really was she and what did she mean to him? Sometimes she'd be a rival, sometimes a friend. Seriously, she was the number one enigma in this whole Hogwarts castle, known for its many mysteries. How did she become like this? He wasn't sure. Perhaps it was in her genes
She started scribbling her name and even threw a compliment after it on the bark. Was her nickname Din? He made a mental note of that for the future. What did he expect? Respect towards the tree from THE Dinara Lucey? She was the same person who wanted to grill the school's squid that he just wanted to tickle... He was a sour vegetarian misanthropist and she was a wild lioness, but he somehow managed to relate to her on some levels. Maybe she had a natural attractiveness and charm to her that made people generally view her in a positive light. Some kind of a gravitational force that he had read about in all the books about physics and how they worked.
He flinched again as she threw her hands in the air so abruptly. Clutching to his sweatshirt where his heart would be, he waited for this equally as heartwrenching performance. She started to narrate her story about how she was met with such a struggle. The poor girl, she had been threatened by crickets a hundred times smaller than her. At first, Remy looked excited about her story (well, as excited as his android self could look) but as the time progressed, he just felt confused. Was she afraid of bugs and small animals? But they were so...small and harmless! Remy wasn't afraid of anything smaller than himself, was he? He let his arms slide in his lap, neatly folded as he listened to her story. Thaïs had been long abandoned as he focused on his little friend...rival now. Her animalistic and vivid gestures made him question many things, but at least they were entertaining.
"I have to say, you're very weird. You're afraid of small critters when you have more wits, at least I presume you do, and strength in you than them. They're more afraid of you if anything," he tapped his chin in thought. Maybe this was why Dinara was not in Gryffindor like he would expect her to be based on her large and loud personality. She might have been smaller than him, but somehow she was bigger in so many levels. Upon hearing her straight O's brag, he straightened his back too. Now they were talking business!
"Well milady, I have to say I'm honored to be graced by your such educated presence. If you could help and enlighten me about some homework later, I'd be eternally grateful and forever in your debt. Sincerely, your servant, peasant Alto," he took advantage of the situation and made sure to flatter her (of course with his very bad posh accent still on) a lot to maybe be graced with her wisdom. There was a reason he had chosen Thaïs over astronomy, for schoolwork was so boring! He preferred hands-on learning anyway.
"What more surprising things do you have that I don't know about you? I never expected you to be-" he eyed her from head to toe in a judging manner. "-as academically refined as you claim to be," Remy was ready for her to slap him or something and held his book before his face. He was actually curious about how she had grown up and what her interests were. He still knew fairly little about her.

The boy's question came as a mystery to her. Dinara still didn't know how the Sorting Hat functioned, yet she vaguely remembered the sorting hat mumbling something about a person's values that truly define who they are. Scratching her head thoughtfully, she mimicked the Sorting Hat's voice as well as she could.
"Dinara Lucey, is indeed a very humble girl. Though I suppose you are right, she could very well have been in Gryffindor instead. I just had to go on and on about core values and how they make a person, that's why she's in Hufflepuff now. But what about you, young one? Why are you in Slytherin?
The irony of her subtle brag about being 'humble' (in the form of a third Hat) had slipped the oblivious girl completely, and even as she spoke, Dinara started to feel a little confused. Indeed, why was she sorted in Hufflepuff. It didn't make sense to her at that moment in time either. On the other hand, though she may have asked Remy for his opinion, Dinara could very well see why the Hat had placed him in Slytherin. There's definitely a whole bunch of cunning and wit behind the seemingly angelic looking face of his. Dinara was very much similar, yet different in many ways.
Her eyes widened as the boy retorted her statement about him disliking her company. Leaning forward, her lips curled upwards into a wide smile that seemed to stretch from ear to ear. Well, if he enjoyed her company, they must be friends! Dinara made a mental note to classify the mysterious boy as a friend of hers from now on.
"If you so enjoy my company, I'll be nice enough to let you indulge in it then."
Tilting her head up haughtily, Dinara's facade of mock arrogance had very quickly shattered, revealing a sweet smile. She had turned her head in the other direction, not desiring for Remy to see her smile -- A friend he may be, but a rival he still is. Her pride would never let her admit to him that she enjoyed his company, though. Nor anyone's really, at least not verbally. As loud and as forward as the girl is, she's still somehow unexpectedly shy when it comes to expressing affection even towards her family. Heck, half the time she wasn't even sure of how she's feeling. There are limits to how introspective an 11-year-old can be! At least, that's the case for Dinara Lucey.
Watching her audience who had been seemingly raptured by her performance, she conducted herself with the air of a speaker that had just concluded her speech and was now preparing to take questions from the audience. Shuffling her fake notes and propping up her fake glasses, Dinara nodded thoughtfully at the boy's question.
"You make a very valid point. I do have much more wit and strength than small critters. Most small critters are fine, like squirrels." She gestured upwards to where she presumed the squirrel from earlier had scrambled up towards. "What are not fine, are little insects. They're small but they're just so..." Without finishing a sentence, Dinara simply pulled a face. After all, a picture paints a thousand words. In her case, her face probably said for her everything that needed to be said.
Upon hearing the boy's request for help in homework; she grinned happily, executing a mock curtsy back at peasant Alto. He didn't strike her as someone who'd willingly ask for help. Plus, his flattery had worked all too well on Dinara; it seemed that Remy had known exactly which buttons to push when it came to persuading the girl. Just flatter her ego and you can get almost anything you want from the girl!
Her family had also trained her to ask for help where she can. Yes, trained. The culture of the Luceys was to wordlessly expect assistance; help was something that was expected and never asked for in her household. This was both good and bad -- Dinara's either incredibly helpful or incredibly nosy, depending on context.
"Should peasant Alto so desire, Lady Lucey shall grant him the honour of her assistance." There it was. The fake accent was back and it was worse than ever. Cocking her head, she eyed the small bag that had been lying beside the boy this whole time. "I'm just curious, which subject managed to bring the great Remy Alto down? The horrible accent was now, thankfully gone -- this was something that Dinara was genuinely curious about. What subject a person likes or dislikes can say a lot about their personality -- and Dinara knew this from the contrasting dynamics of her various classmates.
Remy's next question was a loaded one indeed. Interesting things? Dinara had never quite regarded herself as an interesting person. Although his last comment was unneccesary and the boy had been smart to take the precaution of shielding his face, it wasn't enough to deter Dinara. Standing on her knees and staring down at him from atop the edge of the book rather menacingly, her hair fanning out from both sides of her face; almost akin to a lion's mane, she gave him a light flick on the forehead before blowing a raspberry.
Hah, that's what you get for daring to insult me!" Dinara sat down with an air of satisfaction and a smug smile on her face. Chewing on her bottom lip (as she always did while deep in thought), she wrinkled her nose as she answered, unsure of what she was about to say. "I don't think I have anything that can be considered surprising. In the Muggle-world, I'd say I'm as normal as can be. Here, I guess being Muggle-born is kindof special?"
Struggling to think of something that people would consider 'interesting', Dinara didn't really suppose that generally, there were indeed many things that most people would find unexpected from her. She may wear her emotions on her sleeves, but the loud and cheery persona that she ducked behind so often had masked many of her other traits as well. Still, that was a step up from the Rubik's Cube (which is something that Dinara had given up on trying to solve) that sat in front of her. She would never admit it, but he did pique her curiosity as well. What exactly was behind that cold and cheeky demeanour of his?
"Well, what about you? What other surprising things do I not know about the amazing Remy Alto?"
