Living is the art of getting used to what we didn't expect
She was chatting about her life before Hogwarts with someone. Like where they lived, what their families were like, everything like that. She mentioned how the thing she wanted most in the world used to always be a dog. She'd beg her parents every day for one, even though she knew that their apartment was much too small for one and they didn't even have a yard, and dogs needed to go outside regularly. She used to feel really lonely up in her apartment while her parents were working and before her sister was born, and she thought a dog would solve that problem. They were sweet and entertaining and social and she'd never be bored or lonely if she had a dog around.
She didn't mention all of this to the person she was talking with, but she thought most of it. All she said was that she used to really want a dog. Dogs would always be special to her, even though she'd never had one.

On her way back to the Slytherin common room, she passed a girl who was currently talking to her friends about how much she craved for a dog. She then went on about all the benefits of having a dog, which made Sylvia totally astonished. Not even wanting a pet of her own, she had always seen dogs as the worst choice when looking for a pet.
On another day, Sylvia would have simply walked away and ignore everything the girl was talking about. Today, on the other hand, since she’s already furious about something else, she didn’t even think twice before interjecting: “What’s good about a dog? They’re like the worst pet ever, so noisy and dirty. No wonder your parents wouldn’t allow you to buy one.”

Madi's perfect afternoon was mostly ruined all because some girl couldn't keep her opinion to herself.
But Madi was ready for an argument.
"Could you not listen in on my private conversations?" She did not say it like it was a question. Because it really wasn't, it was more of a demand. " You aren't involved in this. And I like dogs because they're friendly, something you wouldn't understand." Okay, maybe Madi was being a little ruder than she should have been, but she did not care. She really hated it when people made fun of her opinions, even if it was as small as liking dogs. They can just share their opinion, they don't have to start shaming or making fun of other people's opinions.

And I like dogs because they're friendly, something you wouldn't understand.” Already coming back to her senses, Sylvia was once again agitated by the other girl’s words. Guess I’m going to be involved in another fight after all. She thought, no longer wanting to show the least bit of friendliness.
“You think your conversations are so interesting for me to intentionally eavesdrop on? Why don’t you ever think that perhaps you are speaking too loud from the start?” Controlling her emotions, she lowered her volume and continued with a logical approach instead, “I’m not trying to insult your preferences, but if you live in a small house, you definitely won’t have enough room for a dog to feel satisfied in. And also, since I don’t remember any rules in Hogwarts which states you can bring a dog here, your parents will be the ones looking after it for most of the year. If I were you, I would rather choose a cat as my pet, since they’re much quieter and easier to take care of here at Hogwarts.”
Hoping that this girl could see the logic behind her words, Sylvia waited as patiently as she could for a reply. If the girl doesn’t sound so offended anymore, perhaps this argument wouldn’t have to go so far after all.

The girl then proceeded to give a list of reasons on why Madi shouldn't have wanted a dog, including a point about how her parents would be taking care of the dog most of the year while Madi was away at Hogwarts. That really annoyed her, even though she knew that this girl didn't know that she had Muggle parents.
"I'm Muggle-born, it's not like I knew that I would be going to Hogwarts. And it's not like seven year old me had this planned out. All I wanted was to have something to keep me company." Seven was the age that Madi had wanted a dog the most. It was before her sister had been born and her parents had been working a lot more than usual.
Madi would have been a lot less angry and annoyed if she thought this girl was wrong. But she knew that all of those points were right, even if she didn't want to admit it.

Thinking back on the girl’s words, she reminded herself that the main reason why the girl was so angry in the first place wasn’t due to the fact that she spoke up, but because how terrible she claimed a dog is. Not as if I weren’t telling the truth. She thought, meanwhile regretting why she hadn’t simply hold her tongue at first. If she had been as quiet as she always has been, none of this would even have happened.
Knowing that she couldn’t travel back in time, she replied once again to the other girl’s unfriendliness, which now seems to be developing into furiousness, with logical reasoning: “Who blamed you for what you thought when you were 7 years old?” She paused briefly to come up with the best counter argument before continuing, “I was merely suggesting that since you’re older now, and you understand that you’re a witch, perhaps it would be wiser if you could view this opinion more logically. Don’t you think?”

"You do realize how ridiculous this is, right? You coming over because you hear me talking about why I wanted a dog and then deciding to give a list of reasons why I shouldn't want one?" Madi said.
"I never said anyone blamed me for what I thought when I was seven. I was saying that when I was seven I didn't have a list of pros and cons. I didn't have everything planned out, so I wasn't thinking 'oh, I can't get a dog because I'm going to be going to Hogwarts in four years' or 'my apartment is much too small for a dog, I shouldn't get one.'" she said. "And you think I haven't considered the points you're making? You think I don't know them? Well, I do. But even if I didn't, why do you think you should get to tell me them?" she asked. She had absolutely terrible comebacks, but they were all she could think of.
The girl suggested that since Madi was older and knew she was a witch, she could try looking at things more logically. "Sure. And maybe you could work on minding your own business." She smiled sweetly.
