Classes were over for the day and a girl exited the castle soon after the main rush of people had come outside. She was fairly pretty, with light blue eyes, brown hair currently tied back into a neat fishtail braid, and pale, unblemished skin. Underneath her winter cloak, to keep her warm, she wore a thick, soft, wine-red sweater and black, fleece-lined leggings, complete with gloves, fuzzy socks that were hidden in her boots, and a hat. Although this girl was well prepared for the cold like many others, she was quite different from all the other students. She had an air about her of quiet confidence, sharp intelligence, and something else. Passion? Power? Ambition? Whatever it was, it blazed like a fire, which could be shown in her eyes. Maybe it was her excellent posture that played a part in creating this air. Not many kids these days sat or stood up straight, and carried themselves with grace, purpose, and confidence. Perhaps this girl was a Gryffindor, or a Ravenclaw, or a Slytherin. It was hard to tell from one look at her. Whatever she was, she also seemed to be rather sophisticated without necessarily being aloof. The fire in her eyes was masked with a cool, calculating stare, as she was an observant girl who analyzed and remembered nearly everything she saw.

The girl that stood right outside the doors to the main building was certainly one of a peculiar nature. Although she didn't directly let any of her emotions show through, she kept her air, because even though it could show a decent amount about her, it wasn't anything that she minded people knowing. Many people didn't even know her name. Ruby Cazares, that's who this girl was. A pure-blooded first year, born to a family primarily made up of Gryffindors, but one that included all the houses except Slytherin – well, as far as Ruby knew. The air that helped make her so different turned heads. People stared and whispered among themselves, and had tried to figure out who she was in her first months here. Ruby was used to it by now, and didn't mind attracting attention. She felt like she had settled in and made a few good friends, but she was looking for more. Today, she was bored. She had read, drawn, and attempted to socialize, but nothing seemed to satisfy her this afternoon. Everyone was so boring, so serious, and although that could be good, to an extent, it got rather tedious. So, today, as snow fell gently upon the ground that was already coated in the white substance, Ruby was looking for some fun, possibly an adventure and a new friend – maybe with some mischief mixed in there too.

She took a brief moment to appreciate the structure that was what Hogwarts mainly consisted of, the place that many called home. She had sketched it numerous times, made maps both mental and on paper, and learned her way around it. However, she was still not above examining the exterior with a few glances and checking for anything new, or just appreciating the beauty of it all. When she was done, she continued to made her way across a piece of the vast land that was still part of this school. She scanned for individuals that were alone and seemed to be about her age. It didn't take long before she found some, and after analyzing the ones that were the nearest to her, she decided that one girl would be the best option. The other girl had her back turned to Ruby, and she seemed to be building some kind of snow structure, maybe a castle. Ruby was clearly not being given any attention by her chosen victim, and she picked up a clump of snow, holding it between her gloved hands and carefully making it into a perfectly round snowball. She made sure that she didn't compact it too much, so that it was still soft and would remain so upon impact. After all, she was looking for some fun and possibly a playful fight, not an all-out war or an enemy. When the snowball was shaped and Ruby had finished tossing it idly from hand to hand, she launched it at the girl. If she missed, it would go whistling past, hopefully close enough to the girl to hear it. On the other hand, if she hit her target… that was when the fun began.

Ruby was not inherently malicious and did not intend to cause harm of any kind to befall this girl. She was only looking for a possible playmate and some fun, and she was also careful not to hit the structure the girl was building. Ruby understood how irritating it could be to have someone destroy something you had been working on for a long time, and so she didn't want that to happen to the girl either. With a smirk, Ruby watched the snowball fly through the air and waited.

It was a good day to build a snow castle.

Talia supposed it was like a sand castle, like the ones she'd make back home on the beach in Brighton, but with snow. Made sense.

She grabbed some more snow, the powdery, soft snow, the recently fallen snow, and continued to pat it into her little igloo. Maybe if it was a good enough castle a bunny would explore it, even use it for shelter, she thought as she admired the work she had done so far. It was pretty tiny, about the size of a doghouse. Little Talia could crawl in though, if she wanted to.

As she turned to add a little detail to the entrance, she felt a soft impact on her left arm. A snowball. She'd been hit by a snowball.

Immediately the timid little girl crawled into her shelter, shyly peeking out of the little holes that serves as windows to try and locate the culprit.

Would she throw a snowball back? Well, she didn't want to hurt them... but then again, it would be fun to have a playful fight with someone, as long as there was no harm involved.

Talia kept on peeking.

Ruby watched the girl to see how she would react. The girl who had been working on that snow structure managed to disappear into it, even though it seemed so tiny. How small was the girl? Ruby took a second to admire the structure after that. It seemed to be an igloo, complete with windows and the little entrance that the girl had crawled into. There was no sign of the girl for a few moments, and Ruby began to worry slightly. Was the girl offended? Was she not willing to have a snowball fight? Did Ruby somehow hurt her? Had she done something wrong?

Ruby was relieved when she saw a little face appear at one of the windows. The small girl seemed to be looking for the person that had tossed the snowball. Admittedly, the perfect aim and the target being hit had satisfied the Slytherin. Small victories, you know? She was also glad that the soft snowball seemed to have exploded perfectly upon impact and left bits of snow on the girl's arm in the way that only a harmless but well-crafted snowball would.

Ruby continued to watch the girl. Apparently, she hadn't been discovered yet, as the girl was not fixedly watching her and instead was glancing around in the same way that she had been originally. The girl was still peeking out of the window. Was that a sign that Ruby hadn't offended her in any way and could continue? Maybe she could find out.

The first-year Slytherin bent down once more, scooping up snow and crafting it into the same kind of snowball. This time, she wouldn't aim for the girl. That was a bit risky, considering the small size of the window. Besides, if the girl tried to escape it, she could end up destroying her own structure, and even if she succeeded in getting out of the way, the snowball could go straight through and out the other side if the walls weren't solid enough.

Ruby crept forward slightly, making sure to stay where she could be seen easily. If there was no reaction or returned snowball this time, then Ruby would just have to leave. Either it wouldn't be fun for her or she was making the girl unhappy if she got that response.

Ruby aimed not far away from the structure, but at the ground near it, maybe a metre directly in front of the girl. Preparing herself for whatever reaction she got, Ruby fired the snowball and waited.
