Friends?
Date: Sunday 24th September 2023
As much as Leaf liked sitting on their bed all day, reading, there was nothing quite like a peaceful walk in the outdoors. No disruptions. No socializing. Perfect. A few of the leaves started to show yellows and light oranges- autumn was on its way. The once glaring, burning sunlight was now reduced to weaker, colder rays struggling to emerge from behind large sheets of clouds of a darker shade of grey than before.
The other day, Leaf had received a reply from their father- he was okay and enjoying himself back home, but he still missed them, and they missed him. No place felt like home without him.
Leaf sighed and tucked their hands inside their trouser pockets. A light breeze swirled around them, bringing a single leaf with it. Yes. Autumn was definitely here- or coming soon.
Snap.
A twig broke somewhere. Leaf looked around: Was it a squirrel? A bird of some kind? Or maybe it was something else, maybe something that they had only ever read about at the castle's library.
But another snap, this time heavier and more defined, told them these sounds were made by something larger.
Suddenly, a girl appeared from behind the oak tree. She had brown hair and glistening blue eyes. Leaf looked around- the girl appeared to be alone- and drew closer, unsure if there might be some prank behind this sudden appearance. But nothing happened. There was no 'Boo' from behind them, and no one else emerged from the trees. It was just that girl.
"Um... Hi?" Leaf started.

Elvenia, feeling bored and didn't know what to do inside the castle decided to go for a stroll in the grounds. Elvenia who always liked cloudy weather, felt calmed and relaxed. She felt a bit lonely because she has always been surrounded by her friends and right now, there was no one. She wondered that soon autumn will come and there will be haloween, then Christmas and during holidays she can go and visit her parents.Interacting with @Leaf Shard

As she was strolling, she was constantly looking up, at the clouds, deep in her own thoughts.
Whether anyone would like to be her friend here? She knew that Hogwarts is know going to be her second home, she has to make atleast one close friend right?
After few minutes she realized she has arrived a large oak tree. It was big and she thought was very beautiful, it reminded of her home, where a big oak tree stands in front of it. She realized she was a bit homesick. But brushing all the thoughts. She saw a pretty girl standing in front of the oak tree. She had short, black, curly hair with sparkly grey eyes. Elvenia knew that she's not alone anymore!
Maybe she can be her friend?
Elvenia started heading towards her...
"Hi! I'm Elvenia Moonshadow, whats your name?"

Leaf hesitated. The girl- Elvenia Moonshadow, she'd said- had asked for their name. No one had ever done that before.
"I'm... I'm Leaf. Leaf Shard." Did I get it right? They thought, First impressions mean everything.
But Elvenia just smiled. "Nice to meet you, Leaf." They sighed and slowly approached her, head down and facing the ground. What was that expression? The one to describe how you feel when you're nervous? Well, whatever it is, that's how Leaf felt in that moment- this could potentially be their first friend since they were very little, and so it was important that they didn't mess up.
"Nice to meet you too, El-vee-nee-ah." They'd heard her name when she'd introduced herself, but couldn't quite remember how to pronounce it.
"Something like that." Leaf looked into her eyes and saw friendship there. They'd always wanted a friend- someone to go on walks with and recommend books to. If they want the book recommendations, that is. Leaf didn't know if she liked books in the same way that they did.
"This oak tree." Leaf started, "It's beautiful, isn't it?" It had long and broad branches reaching out from the trunk, ending in small twigs covered in green-but-turning-yellow leaves and tiny acorns. Oak trees were very common at home, and there was one just outside their house that was perfect for climbing. And they had climbed it, many times.

Elvenia feeling excited, wanted really bad to start a conversation. She saw that Leaf, seemed really shy. But she didn't cared, she was quite happy to see someone and wanted to be her friend.Interacting with @Leaf Shard

She was surprised when she heard Leaf, talking how beautiful the oak tree was, it was because few minutes earlier she was thinking the same!
"Indeed it is! I have one in front of my house, but not as big as this one", she pointed out.
Now Elvenia was not able to control her excitement, they had the exact same thought, what a coincidence!
There was an awkward silence for a few moments.
Elvenia was thinking really hard about what to say to keep this precious conversation going.
After few seconds she started "Hey do you like to read books? I really really love to read books! Whichever, wherever, whenever, it just have to be a book but yeah it got be readable!" Elvenia chuckled.
Elvenia was feeling really happy.
This might be one of the best days of my life! She thought. She wanted her to be her dorm partner, but thought to take it slowly.

When Elvenia said she loved to read books, Leaf was over the moon. Yes, they thought, Someone who understands my love for books. All the kids they'd ever met had all called them names like 'weird' or 'nerd', just for reading on the bench instead of doing gymnastics or playing football on the school field like everyone else. In short, no one ever considered Leaf to be 'normal'. To be fair, going to a magical school isn't normal.
"So, where are you from? I mean, your family and well... home." Leaf asked Elvenia, "I live in Ely. It's this small city to the east of England- With my dad." They'd never told anyone anything about their father before. He was the person who had brought them up after their mother's death six years ago- he meant everything to them.
"London." Elvenia told them, "I'm from London." Behind her expression, Leaf could see excitement on the edge of bursting. They were excited too, but they were probably slightly more experienced in hiding happy emotions from others. Despite this, Leaf couldn't help but show a little smile when talking to this amazing person who had just come into their life.
"London's great. Last time I went was shopping for Hogwarts, but I've explored lots of the muggle parts with my dad before."
Another short silence. Not awkward, just what happens when you finish a conversation topic and don't know what to say next.
With Elvenia, Leaf felt more confident than with others, and so launched into a topic on favourite books, "What's your favourite book? You can have multiple, it's always hard to decide."
"So, where are you from? I mean, your family and well... home." Leaf asked Elvenia, "I live in Ely. It's this small city to the east of England- With my dad." After hearing the question asked by leaf, what was it? yea about my favorite book...do I even have a favorite book? I've read many but I cannot seem to have one particular favorite book..
after thinking for a sec she replied "Actually", she said "I've read so many books, and they are many which are really good but I don't think I will be able to compare them I guess" she said thinking if she'll understand.
Anyways, it was now getting late, Elvenia saw the sun was now setting, the sky turned bright orange-red, it felt really magical and was making the orange and red leaves of the oak tree look more enchanting.
Ohhh autumn is so near, and there is fall ball coming as well! so exciting, Leaf is so nice, maybe we could go together...? I'll ask her soon, I hope she says yes. Elvenia thought.

Leaf saw Elvenia glance towards the setting sun in wonder. Truly magical. Bright oranges casting their rays across the beautiful landscape, every single tiny blade of grass reflecting the amber glow. An unforgettable sight for an unforgettable day.
Elvenia had said she'd read lots of books, but couldn't compare them to each other- Leaf had always felt that way around books, it's why they never asked for people to choose one, but altered the question so they could choose more than one.
"Should we go back inside? It's getting late and we don't want to be caught out after hours." Leaf suggested- they did love the sunset, but detention wasn't a price they wanted to pay. Rules can be broken from time to time, they considered, but only on occasion and definitely not if there is a high chance of getting caught.
Elvenia agreed, and the two wandered up the winding path back to the castle together, enjoying the setting sun and watching as the shadows became long, then faded into the oncoming darkness of night.
Suddenly, Leaf remembered something they'd wanted to ask someone for a few days now: "Elvenia?" They began, "Everyone's talking about this ball. The thing is, I don't understand what it is."

Wait what?! well this is strange very very strange, maybe in a good way but still strange-they were really having the same thoughts, well it might be an another coincidence but when you have coincidences twice and that also in a row, it just feels wierd. Before Elvenia can even answer the question, leaf said "Earth to Elvenia, you there?"
"Oh yes, yes sorry, so yea, about that, well about that fall ball, even I don't know much about it because it will be my first time. But it sounds pretty exciting. Anyways whatever it is, it has to be fun!" She said happily.
After few moments as they going through the castle corridors, Elvenia hesitantly asked Leaf
"Um..Leaf? I-I wanted to ask you a question, uhh will you c-come to this ball with me? We can enjoy this together! Only if you are okay with it." She said quickly.
She really wished she says yes, I do not want to go to a ball alone, without a friend. She was already thinking if she'll go with her, what things they shall do in the ball, what kind of beautiful dresses they'll wear, maybe they can twin! or...have a same dress color code?

Despite knowing that any kind of ball would involve going out of their comfort zone, Leaf wanted to go with Elvenia because they knew that even if something didn't feel comfortable, it would always feel better when doing it with a friend. Plus, Leaf hated disappointing the people close to them.
"Yes" Leaf said, certain of what they were saying, "I'll go to this ball with you." They saw Elvenia's eyes light up. She seemed eager to go to this ball, as if it was all that mattered to her in that moment. Leaf realised, as they were thinking , that they were also excited too.
I'll have to tell Dad about this, they thought, maybe he knows a thing or two about going to balls. And maybe also where to find appropriate clothing, they considered, reminding themself that their wardrobe might not be suitable for the occasion.
Still, they'd have to practice fighting the temptation to back into a corner and hide there until everyone is gone. That would be the tricky part.
"So I was thinking..." Leaf chuckled in their head, remembering a line from a book they'd read as a kid that had presented them with an excellent response to when someone starts with 'I was thinking' but put it aside and continued to listen to Elvenia, "We could wear similar clothes. You know, like, we could have a matching colour scheme or something."

Yes! now I won't have to go alone, it feels so great to finally make a great friend in Hogwarts.
They walked through the corridors, after many twists and turns they finally reached the common room's entrance. They gave eagle shaped knocker a gentle tap. After solving the riddle they entered the common room. Elvenia never got tired from the look of their common room, all blues and bronze.
It got really dark outside, moon was looking glorious, it was a bright waxing gibbous, she noticed as she peered through the windows. Elvenia felt relaxed after such a good day, she'll definitely write all about what happened today in her journal.
Elvenia noticed Leaf smiling, she was really glad to have a friend like her!
Elvenia said goodbye to Leaf, hoping to meet Leaf during her classes.
Elvenia went into her dormitory, took out a blue colored diary with E.M initials on the cover page.
She began to write

Today went so good, that I may not be able to explain in words, I met a really nice person, her name is leaf....
