Dancing Alone Closed

Phoebe entered the grand ballroom, panning the entire space to ensure that nobody besides her was there. Taking a deep breath, she skipped to the center of the dance floor, standing strongly. She loosely shrugged off her robe, revealing her striped turtleneck half hidden underneath stonewashed suspenders and a pair of hard dancing shoes held firmly in her hand.

Phoebe sat down, kicking off her tennis shoes. She then proceeded to put on the heavy shoes, tying them evenly with one another. She then began stretching her legs, doing some toe touches and lunges. She then stood, lightly tapping the toes of her shoes as a sort of warm up. Taking a deep breath and bringing her shoulders back, she prepared a tune in her mind, slowly tapping her heels to get the dance going.

There is a difference between Irish and Scottish step dancing. Scottish step dance is more loose and casual whereas Irish dancing is more sharp and quick. You could definitely tell that Phoebe was doing a Scottish jig by the way she moved her feet.

Phoebe tapped her feet, listening to the Scottish bagpipes playing in her mind. She clicked her left heel against the floor, hearing the sound reverberate around the entire room. She followed that by a few toe taps from the other foot in an organized beat. Her feet served as the percussive element to the tune that her mind created. Although she was certainly nowhere near as talented as most country dancers, her feet never lost track with the beat. She may have missed a few steps, but she never forgot the speed.

Phoebe felt herself beginning to run out of breath, but she did not want to stop dancing. She felt too comfortable. She remembered the lessons her aunt gave her when she was younger. She danced with her all the time in the shop, performing to all of her aunt's employees. She used to love dancing before her love of gardening took over.

Phoebe jumped, bringing both of her feet down in an abrupt manner, causing a loud clack to ricochet against the walls. Phoebe finished her dance off with that, smiling. Out of breath, she collapsed on the ground, reaching for her robe to pull out a handkerchief out of her pocket. She wiped her face to rid herself of the sweat, exhausted from the amount of time she had spent dancing. She was fine in the beginning, but once the time exceeded fifteen minutes, she'd definitely began to tire.

Phoebe flinched slightly when she heard someone's feet tapping in the distance. Confused, she looked toward the ballroom's entrance, noticing a person who had been standing there for who knows how long.

"Hello," Phoebe said, attempting to draw the stranger's attention.

The stalker’s caramel-haired head snapped up at the sound of the other girl’s voice. Her hazel eyes were devoid of emotion, and if you were observing her, they seemed to stare straight into one’s soul. “Sorry,” she said, in a sharp voice that implied that she wasn’t really sorry. She was slightly taller than average, and her very pale skin glowed in the dim light. She was leaning against the threshold, watching Phoebe—a girl she’d actually met before.

With that realization, Koko took a step forward. “Hey,” she called softly. Her velvety voice echoed throughout the almost empty room. She was amazed, there were amazing acoustics in here! Koko had tied her hair back in a loose bun to get some stray strands out of her heart-shaped face. She tapped her foot, which was clad in a heeled black leather boot, against the floor as to keep a beat. “Go on dancing if you wish,” Koko prompted the other girl. “I’ll be right here.”

The floor was seemingly chestnut, and gave off a nice resonating sound from each time her heel struck it. “Wonderful dance,” Koko commented, “I can go find some sheet music for a piano... maybe something composed in Scotland?” She stood, waiting patiently for the other girl to reply.

Phoebe shook her head, quickly standing up. "Thank you, but these," she said, tapping her feet a couple times, "are all I need." She smiled, slowly skipping towards the girl. She stopped a mere few yards away, gradually tapping her feet faster and faster.

"Normally, this dance would be accompanied by a fiddle or a bagpipe of some sort," she said, bringing her hands to her sides. "I prefer only the shoes. I like the percussive sound the most," she smiled, crossing her legs a couple times whilst tapping her feet, showing off a little. "I keep the music in my head so I can keep track of my steps." Phoebe brought her leg to the side, tapped her foot, and brought it behind her other leg. She did the same with the other and repeated the move a couple more times.

She began spinning around, still tapping her feet. She spun around in circles, laughing as she did so. Once she reached the same spot in front of the girl as she was before, she halted, firmly placing her feet on the floor. "How did that look?" she asked, smiling at her. "My aunt taught me that one in her kitchen. The tiles there are perfect for these," she said, taking a few steps toward the girl. "Want to try?" she asked, not minding if the girl said no, but still hoping she would oblige.

Surprise washed over her as Phoebe asked her to try. Koko'd never been the best dancer, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to give it one try, would it? She laughed to herself, a small ringing sound that echoed around the room. "It looked wonderful," Koko assured her. "If you don't remember me, I'm Koko, and I guess I'd like to try it." After a playful pause in her words, she added, "not that I'm any good." She said it lightheartedly, because even if she was horrible at dancing, she was still a great pianist and a fine artist.

Strutting awkwardly to a small storage area, Koko reached for some dancing shoes. She slipped off the ones she was wearing and slid on the new ones. They were heavier than she was used to, because the only dances she could do were usually ballet ones. Koko could lift her foot, but the shoes provided more resistance and made her slip less on the slick wood floor. A wide smile broke across her usually solemn face as she grinned, her eyes alight with laughter. She stood up and spun around, her pale pink skirt flaring open around her alabaster legs. She spun and then collapsed in a giggling, caramel-haired heap. “Help,” she whispered, but she was too busy laughing.

Phoebe was giggling uncontrollably, watching as Koko spun in her shoes, followed by her falling. She burst out in laughter, quickly running up to the girl. Phoebe helped her up, making sure she was steady.

"Look at you, already a natural. I can hear a whole crowd tossing roses in at your feet," Phoebe laughed, letting go of her once she knew she was steady. She took a couple steps back, giving her and Koko enough space to teach her a couple steps.

"Alright, so first you get your right leg and just tap your toe real quick. Then, you immediately follow that by switching your toes to your heel. Repeat that a couple times and use your left leg to make a stomping motion," Phoebe said, demonstrating it to the girl. "You then do the same thing with your other foot. It's almost like your feet are copying eachother." Phoebe did exactly that. She started off slow, gradually picking up speed as she repeated the steps. "It's also important that you keep your hands at your sides. It helps you to keep balance," she said, emphasizing the hands at your sides part. She looked at Koko, waiting for her to repeat the steps she gave her.

Koko wobbled on her feet as she got up, almost like a penguin. Her black and white striped top could have made that thought more real than se’d wished, but soon enough Phoebe was talking. No, not talking. Demonstrating. Koko awkwardly followed the movements, and finally, she did it quickly on her own. Of course, right when she tapped her foot, her other one slipped and she collapsed again. She’d been dancing at a speed of about 70 beats per minute. She now realized that it was probably way too slow for the jig as she, laughing, heaved herself up again. “I suck at this,” she muttered. She kept repeating the steps, completely away that she danced like a robot. At least not like a well-oiled one anymore; she wasn’t slipping...

Don’t jinx it! she screamed at herself. If she slipped again she’d be extremely mortified. Mortification seemed to be her secret middle name instead of Linda. To find her pace, Koko hummed a fast tune while dancing. She got a little less jerky but still looked like she was a stick figure with the joints gone wonky. Laughing at her odd comparison, she grinned at Phoebe. “Thanks!” She said. “I think I’m getting a little better!”

Phoebe was internally losing it. The Phoebe that was trapped in her brain was probably rolling on the floor, holding onto her ribs. Phoebe would never outwardly express her amusement in fear that Koko would feel more embarrassed than she obviously already did. Phoebe simply smiled, watching Koko dance. Phoebe continued to support her, though, helping her up whenever she fell.

Despite how she started out, Koko was getting better. She was still incredibly stiff as a board, but her footwork was much better. She grinned, this time, proudly, at her friend. She danced a small jig excitedly, happy that she was able to teach her something.

When she heard the girl thank her, her smile noticeably lit up. "It's no problem. It's an easy step, so I'm glad you got the gist of it," she said, walking up to her. "If you want, we can end our little lesson and continue it later on," she said, noticing how nervous she was, "or we can keep going if you're up for it." Phoebe backed away, demonstrating a much more difficult jig that took even her well over an hour to learn. "If we keep going, you might even be able to master that," she grinned.

A smile flitted across Koko's tired face as she looked up at Phoebe, mischief sparkling in her eyes. "I'm up for learning," she declared flamboyantly. Her feet may have been sore, but in her mind, beauty and success were all just modified amounts of pain. Pain that she could easily endure.

"However..." Koko's voice trailed off. She didn't want to discourage her chances of learning, but she also didn't want to trouble her friend. "Only if it's find with you."

A rivulet of swear ran down her forehead. However beautiful the ballroom may have been, it definitely was hot. Koko reached up to wipe off her damp face when she saw something, an almost transparent glint in the corner of her eye. She paid no mind to it, for it could have been a ghost. It would have been nice to see the Bloody Baron soon...

Koko tried to spin on the slick floor and only ended up tripping over her own foot. She tried to scramble ip quickly, but the heavy dance shoes weighed her down. Still, she finally got herself to her feet after amounts of heaving effort, but she was smiling. "If you're fine with it, I'd love to learn."

Sorry about the wait! After tomorrow I'll be able to reply much faster.

Phoebe was certainly impressed with the girl's thirst for learning. Impressed, but horrified. It was quite obvious the girl was tired, and it was even more obvious when she fell. Watching Koko attempt to stand had definitely sold her on her decision to put the lesson aside for a bit.

Phoebe's mind then went back to the first few times her aunt tried to teach her how to dance. She remembered how she refused to stop, even when she had difficulty breathing because of how exhausted she was. She remembered her sore feet the following days, the blisters on her ankles caused by her shoe straps, and the wheezing. Oh, the wheezing. Every single lesson ended with her dry coughing.

"I think we should take a break," she said, walking over to the girl. She handed her a handkerchief (not the one she was using earlier) after noticing the sweat dribbling from her forehead. She smiled sympathetically, sitting down in front of her. "We can continue in a few minutes, hours, or days, but I myself need a small break," she said, hoping that would coax her into sitting down. She patted at a spot next to her to add some emphasis.

It's fine. I probably won't be posting as frequently because of the holidays, but it's all good.
