Between Occamies and Dragons

Daphne wandered through the bustling campgrounds, her heart filled with a mixture of excitement and a tinge of disappointment. She had been assigned to the Occamy cabin, a fascinating creature in its own right, but deep down, she longed to be a part of the Dragon Cabin. Something was enchanting about dragons that stirred her imagination and fueled her desire to be among those who shared her fascination. She sighed softly to herself, her gaze fixated on the Dragon Cabin nearby. Its grand exterior beckoned to her, evoking a sense of awe and wonder. Daphne imagined what it must be like inside, envisioning magnificent dragon-themed decorations and camaraderie among the campers that she yearned to be a part of.
She knew, however, that entering the Dragon Cabin was strictly forbidden and she didn't wish to get in trouble and possibly be sent home. As much as she longed to explore its interior, Daphne respected the rules. Besides, being in the Occamy cabin meant the opportunity to meet new friends, to forge connections with those who didn't attend Hogwarts as well. It was a chance for growth and discovery that she shouldn't overlook.
Lost in her thoughts, Daphne unintentionally muttered a few words in Veela, a language she seldom spoke outside of her home. "Coarrl ca'll coanho, a's a' oa faagh cooar! Ya'au orrom oamoc faora'mo sa' llhiy a'll?"
Her eyes widened, cheeks flushing with embarrassment as the unfamiliar sound escaped her lips. She quickly glanced around, hoping that nobody had overheard her slip-up. She berated herself internally, wondering why she had allowed her emotions to overcome her better judgment. Speaking Veela outside the comfort of her home felt vulnerable as if a part of her Veela heritage had been laid bare for others to see.
Translation: Calm down daphne, it's not a big deal! You never cared before so why now?

Between Occamies and Dragons
@Daphne SapphirusAlthough his first day at camp hadn’t been enjoyable whatsoever, Pyxis was beginning to warm up to this quaint location. Yesterday’s happenings were unfortunate, but after his cheerful morning conversations, a hearty lunch, and a trek around the campgrounds, the boy was beginning to think that he judged this place - and wizards - a bit too harshly. Honestly, the longer he stood around, observing the different activities taking place, the more he equated this place to a normal summer camp. One that his parents would never, in a million years, think to send him to. He supposed he should be thankful to the magic school for offering him this experience.
The only thing that Pyxis felt like he was missing was a few new friends. Other than the roommates he was currently trying to avoid, he’d only met one boy and it was just Pyxis’ luck that he wasn’t from Hogwarts. While at lunch, he mulled over the uncanny introduction he had with his roommates, and he decided that giving them another chance had to be the answer. So, after procrastinating for some time, he worked up the confidence to head back to the Dragon cabin and strike up some conversations.
He passed by the compact and humble-looking cabins, only differentiated by the flags he still couldn’t believe were real, and finally made his way over to his home for the rest of the month. He noted an unfamiliar but particularly striking girl standing around the front. The feeling he had when he passed her was odd, but it wasn’t his first time getting that… warm chill is what he would perceive it as. He’d experienced it a couple times around camp and spent quite a bit wondering what in the heck was going on. Of course, the muggle-born would have no idea that he was under the effects of Veela heritage, but the draw wasn’t strong enough to force him to stop and chat with this girl. That is, until she started speaking in an unfamiliar language.
“Hey there! Are you in the Dragon cabin? I didn’t see you yesterday,” he spoke before he could stop himself. But this was a good thing. He wanted new friends anyways. “Say, what was that language you were speaking just now?” It wasn’t French or Spanish or Japanese, for sure. He did struggle to understand Americans most of the time, but he could tell it wasn’t English either. Could it be Russian or German? He hadn’t met anyone from those schools yet, and the thought of knowing someone from those parts of Europe was enticing, to say the least.

Between Occamies and Dragons

Daphne suddenly jumped up in shock from an unexpected voice and whipped around to face the dark-haired boy, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. He had overheard her speaking in Veela, and she couldn't help but mentally scold herself for slipping up like that. "Oh, um, hi there," Daphne stammered, her mind scrambling to come up with a plausible explanation for her slip-up. She nervously rubbed the back of her neck, her eyes darting around as she tried to gather her thoughts. "I, uh, no I'm in the Occamy cabin, I was just...admiring the dragon one, it's really cool.." she blurted out first. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy that the boy had been assigned to the Dragon Cabin but it quickly faded away for the boy's second question made her heart skip a beat.
He wanted to know about the language she had been speaking. Panic rose within her, as she couldn't possibly reveal that she was speaking Veela. It was a secret she guarded closely, not something she could casually divulge to a stranger or really anyone but the professors at Hogwarts. Gathering whatever courage she could muster, she decided to offer a half-truth, a muddled explanation that she hoped would suffice. "Oh, um, it's a secret...tribal language," Daphne replied, her voice trembling slightly. "My father is a traveler, and he's learned some languages during his journeys. The one I was speaking is a Bulgarian language-a language from Bulgaria, yeah, not Bulgarian though...." It wasn't entirely untrue; her father did indeed travel and learn different languages, plus Veela were from Bulgaria. As the words left her lips, she inwardly winced, realizing how awkward and unconvincing her explanation must have sounded. She hated being dishonest, but sometimes secrets were necessary, and it was better than facing the truth of her alluring ability to draw others in. It was unfair in her mind, she had no right to control or 'hypnotize' others, even if it was unintentionally.

Between Occamies and Dragons
@Daphne SapphirusPyxis looked a bit confused as the girl spoke about admiring the Dragon cabin. He turned back to survey the building, and then looked at the cabins standing nearby. They all resembled each other quite closely, but it was his understanding that the interiors were different for each cabin, so that’s what the girl was probably trying to admire.
“The inside is really cool, I can confirm. It’s got a bit of a tavern atmosphere, medieval and rustic. I’d sneak you in, but I don’t want to get kicked out before my first class,” he joked. “Erm, I have no idea what an occamy is, but if they’re anything similar to dragons, then I bet they’re really cool. What’s your cabin like?”
The girl went on to awkwardly explain the language she was speaking, and it became clear to Pyxis that the topic was touchy. But he wasn’t anything if not polite, so pushing her to talk about it wasn’t on his agenda. Besides, she did say that it was a secret language, so it was probably disrespectful to continue on with that conversation anyways. He especially didn’t want to get mixed up in a culture war when his peers for the summer camp were so extremely diverse.
“I didn’t know there were different languages in Bulgaria, but that’s pretty cool to know. And it’s a very pretty language. Anyways, are you from Durmstrang then? I’ve heard that Bulgarians tend to go to that school. Oh. Wait, no. You said your father’s a traveller? So you’re not Bulgarian. You’re Hogwarts then, aren’t you?” he pivoted the conversation after nodding along to her explanation. It wasn’t as graceful as he wanted it to be, and he was talking a lot more than he was used to around this girl, but he hoped it had gotten the job of making her more comfortable done. “I’m Pyxis, by the way. Future Hogwarts student.”
