Unexpected Meeting at Lunch

The girl with obsidian eyes is now sitting at one of the four large, long tables in the Great Hall. The Great Hall looked busy this afternoon. From the entrance, Sere can still see students are keep coming in to enjoy their lunch. Sere is one of all the students who have the same purpose in this Great Hall.
Sere glanced around. I don't know that the Great Hall can be this busy, it is usually fewer people than this afternoon. Luckily I arrived on time.
Lunch is the best time to 'looking for some fresh air' after class. Sere takes roasted chicken and mashed potatoes, one of several types of dishes served this afternoon in the Great Hall. Her first bite is accompanied by a satisfied nod, “Delicious! This is the kind of thing we need after History of Magic lesson that makes my logic stop working and start memorizing. How about you? What do you think about the class?"
Sere looked to the left. Today, the girl is not eating lunch alone like she usually always do since several years ago. Beside her, there is a boy with black hair and beautiful blue eyes. "Do you have any problems being in the crowd like this?"
The Ravenclaw boy next to her indeed looks a bit different from Sere who could munch her mashed potatoes calmly without caring about how many people are around her. Sere suspects that the first year student who answered 'Laxius Remington' when she asked his name in previous class is on the introvert spectrum, but Sere is not sure since she read that extraversion and introversion are only related to 'where people get their energy from'. It's better if I ask directly rather than guessing.
"I mean, are you introvert?" She is asking, frankly.

Laxius is startled to hear such a direct question from her. He thought “This girl is just way too frank“. Laxius barely eats and the
girl in the Gryffindor attribute already bombarded him with 4 questions simultaneously, giving him no time to answer. She even somehow asks something so direct and kinda personal for someone she just met literally minutes ago.
“For the introduction, the girl sitting next to me is named Sere Nade, I called her Sere. We met in my first class of History of magic and coincidentally we somehow also sat together. Because I am an introvert, Sere is the one who makes the first move and introduction, even before the class starts. We didn't talk much back then as we were preparing for the class and not long after that, the class started. Sere invited me to have lunch together after class and I didn't mind getting to know her deeper. I was close to starving when the class finally ended anyway. We had a little chat on the way to the great hall, and then here we are.”
For the record, Laxius is not a fan of huge crowds, like a school canteen during lunch break. His steps are always limited, waiting in a long line just to grab food, having to be extra careful when carrying the food, and many more. The loud sound from the cutlery and the students' voices is also the reason why Laxius is uncomfortable in this crowd, especially to have conversation.
It is not like Laxius doesn't like her company, it's just talking and eating using the same part of the body : mouth, and we can’t do both of the two actions well at once. Laxius is starving and wants to quickly finish the food, and have the conversation later, when the situation is more suitable. But she already asked anyway, so Laxius gave her a glance at her obsidian eyes before actually replying to the last question “I actually am. Is it very obvious though?” while wondering why Sere is even asking him that question.

October was still the season of Fall, where all the yellow things mostly could be seen along with the cool breeze. There seemed a boy, still in his uniform, who slept soundly in the Library. Some parchments, books, a bottle of ink, and a quill were pushed aside from his sleeping position. His right elbow accidentally moved one of the books and made it fall. Surprised by the loud sound of the book, the boy suddenly woke up and widened his eyes. "What time is it?" he said and looked for the clock in the Library. "Wait what? It's already lunchtime?!" Then the boy put all his belongings into his satchel carelessly and ran to the Great Hall.
It was already crowded there. Some students seemed already eaten their meal. And every place was filled except for the one near a student with a Ravenclaw attribute like him. He rushed to get there and took the place shamelessly because he didn't want to pass the lunchtime as he felt very hungry. Then he looked at the boy and the girl in front of him. "I'm sorry for interrupting your conversation. It seemed that it is the only place available here. Also, there's no plate here so I assumed no one owns this spot," he said to the boy with the Ravenclaw attribute and the girl with the Gryffindor attribute. Then he took a plate and some of the meals. "No silky pudding for lunch?" Zach's face clearly showed disappointment. Then he took a bite of the food he had taken.
When he munched his lunch, a memory tried to show him something. The girl on the other side of the table was very familiar to him. "She looked very familiar. Have I met her before?" he thought. He tried to remember where he had met her. "I think she's not from the church. Dancing place? I don't think so."
When he was finished munching and the first years in front of him started to be silent, he started to talk. "I am Zach by the way." Zach cursed himself with his internal voice as he felt weird. Introducing himself out of nowhere?! It wasn't Zach-like. But he couldn't help but feel awkward as he thought he was the one who made the atmosphere this weird as he appeared in the middle of their conversation. "We are from the same house. I saw you sometimes in the Common Room and here but we didn't have the chance to talk. So what's your name?" he asked to the boy. Before the boy could answer, Zach immediately added "Also, I think we have met before. Have you been participating in science fairs? You are very familiar but I can't remember where we have met."

Sere swallowed the mashed potato while hearing Laxius' answer. He didn't answer my first question. Is the Great Hall too noisy? Maybe he couldn't hear my voice.
Sere put down her cutlery and shifted her focus to Laxius beside her. She is very proud that her guess is correct. She folded her arms, looking so ready to explain her deduction about 'the introvert Laxius' which was actually just her random guess, "Gotcha! I'm sorry for asking suddenly without any context. I just want to get to know you more. I can see you are being uncomfortable in the crowd of the Great Hall this afternoon, so I gues--"
Sere changed her focus to someone across the long table. There is a boy wearing robes exactly like those worn by Laxius. Sere looked left and right as the boy said about no other places to sit. She is nodding and saying, "There's nobody in front of us, please hav--"
Sere shutted her mouth up. That's right, the Ravenclaw boy across her didn't ask for permission, so there's nothing wrong about sitting right away. Sere could hear the boy murmured about silky pudding. I think I saw silky pudding on another table though. Umm, but I'm not sure. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe this guy is just unlucky.
After few moments of silence, the boy introduced himself as Zach. Sere opened her mouth, excited by the potential of making a new friend. "I'm Sere, Sere Nade. First year of Gryffindor. It's a pleasure to meet you," Sere glanced at Laxius and nudged the boy's arm, "Hey, you do it too. Introduce yourself." She whispered.
"I'm not sure," Sere replies to Zach, "But I don't think I know you. As far as I can remember, I have never seen you at any places." Sere thinks for a moment. "I came to many science fairs actually. Not exactly to see the exhibitions, but to take part in competitions held together with these science fairs." Sere is a bit surprised about Zach knowing -or at least he said that he recognized- her in the past. She doesn't have to say that she always wins in competitions held at the science fairs, right? It definitely would be too cocky for first meeting. I have to build a good impression. Hold youself, Sere!

A Surprise Encounter

It felt like the sound of accomplishing an achievement when I told her that her guess was right. Either she is good at reading people's personality, or I am indeed very obvious. Still focused listening to her explanation, our conversation is suddenly cut by another boy in the ravenclaw suit who asks to sit across the table. I can see from his gesture that this guy is kinda in a hurry to get here. I heard the guy complaining about silky puding before introducing himself as Zach out of nowhere. These people around me today are so surprising and unpredictable that it makes me wonder if I am the one who is actually missing out.
Sere nudged Laxius’s arm and told him to introduce himself, but she herself immediately had a conversation with Zach, giving Laxius no chance to talk. During that time, Laxius listen to their conversation and learned about how they might have met before in some exhibitions or science fairs. Laxius saw Sere’s face when Zach told her that and realized that Laxius is not the only one who was surprised. Other side of Laxius’ brain thinks it's rare for someone to actually notice him out of nowhere, that’s why he believes Zach might be lying.
After Laxius feels like their conversation can be interrupted, he says "Hello Zach, I am Laxius from the first year. You are welcome to join us for lunch, and I am sorry for the silky pudding. I don't think I have ever seen you in one of my classes. You must be a senior. Which year are you?".

Zach heard something from the girl but didn't bother to ask since he was too hungry to ask. He took a slice of cheese, two slices of bread, and a bowl of soup that he didn't know what it was. The boy was munching his meal quickly before lunchtime ended. It's not like he was eavesdropping their conversation of the two students across him but he can't help but hear them as their distance wasn't that far.
After he asked some questions for both of them, the girl with black hair answered him first. She said that her name was Sere Nade. Zach wondered if her name had come from the word 'serenade'. Then, he nodded in response to the girl. "Competition..." Zach was thinking for some moments. And suddenly his face was lit up. Then he said, "You must be winning most of them, right? My memory isn't that good but if I remember you, it might be because I often saw you in the noticeable place." excitedly. It was kind of weird when he met someone he had seen from the muggle place in this school. And he was also curious if she had a hard time in the school due to the different cultures between the two worlds.
Then he moved his head to the direction of the other Ravenclaw boy. He gave a bright smile to him as he introduced himself as Laxius. "Another unique name," he thought. "Yeah... I just hope they will make silky pudding later at dinnertime." But will the house elves make them? Maybe Zach should go to the kitchen and ask them to make some for him. "Oh? Eh-" Zach was thinking what the boy was asked. His mind wasn't in focus when he mentioned silky pudding. "S-second year?" he seemed panicky for a second and immediately said, "I mean, I am from second year," awkwardly.
"What is your impression of this school? or maybe wizarding world?" He asked to both of them, especially since he knew that she must be living in the muggle household because there was not likely a wizard-born that joined the science fair. They already have their own science, far more interesting the the muggles have. "Have you faced any difficulties?" Zach asked the two like he was long enough in the school even though he just had been there for less than a year if the holidays were counted too. But he was really curious if they have same problem like him on the first year.

"Maybe you saw me on the championship podium," Sere seems to think for a moment, considering whether she needs to say the next thing, and at the end she said it with almost no tone of arrogance, "That's the biggest possibility. As far as I can remember, I've never lost in competitions held by science fairs."
It would still be considered as an arrogant remark for some people, but she's clearly not intended to be arrogant. Sere is no longer at the stage that she needs to be praised for her accomplishment in competitions. She did the competition because it was her only friend and she wanted to met her friend often. In addition, this glasses boy was the one who drove Sere to admit her existence at the place that was 'easily seen' by many people in science fairs, right? Sere's just responded it honestly... and maybe a little bit unplanned cocky.
Sere shrugged her shoulders, "But all those achievements are left behind, it doesn't necessary by the time you come here." This girl was really surprised on the first week here since all the subject taught always accompanied by things related to magic. It turns out to be difficult for her to accept the fact that Hogwarts is the true definition of 'New Journey' she initially wants. The presence of Zach, who spontaneously and excitedly said that he knows her, makes Sere a little bit relieved. At least there's still a small part of this school that recognize her -so different- past and give her indirect reminder that 'it's okay to adjusting yourself slowly' today. "Thanks for saying that you recognize me." is the only thing Sere can says.
Sere heard the two Ravenclaw boys talking about silky pudding. It seems Zach likes silky pudding as much as I like roasted chicken and mashed potatoes. She also gets a fact that Zach is a second year student at Hogwarts. Woah, he's a year senior than me? I tought he was in my year. I hope I can invite him to meet again someday and ask him to teach me many things about Hogwarts and especially its subjects.
"Are you just reading my mind? I was just having a monologue about my difficulties getting used to learning at Hogwarts," Sere pushes her plate away. She finishes eating and become more interested in the conversation, "I mean, I like being here from the start. The atmosphere is very pleasant, very warm. The library, my dorm, and the grounds are my favorite so far. I just have to go through the phase of getting used to magic and stuffs..." Sere sighed, "...the simplest thing is on the tiring day after school, I still manage to gather my will to walk and open my dorm's door by myself even though it would be faster if I swing my wand and casted Aberto right away." She added for Zach, "There's nothing like that in the muggle world, in case you are not from muggle family."
Sere turned towards Laxius, waiting for an answer from her peer. Is he a muggle-born too? Is Laxius also experiencing the same difficulties?

Despite the background noise from other NPCs (All of the students that Laxius doesn't even acknowledge its existence), he is still able to listen to Sere and Zach conversation about their knowing each other from science fair before. “As far as I can remember, I've never lost in competitions held by science fairs.” After hearing this, Laxius immediately thought “It feels like she low-key wants to show off, but if what she said is true, then i just got a jackpot, a truly smart friend in science while we are studying in a wizarding school.”Date : October 12th, 2023

When Zach asks about the first impression of this world and school, Laxius immediately recalls the first time he ran toward platform 9 ¾, and the first time he saw how big and magical Hogwarts truly is. ”This place is incredible! Even though my dad had already described everything to me, I was so stunned on my first day that I couldn't contain my smile. It simply feels different when you are actually there, you know, and it's hard to express. I don't mind much about the house, really. Are you excited to be in ravenclaw? Is there any particular benefit being in one?” Laxius couldn't contain his excitement and curiosity, and ended up saying everything all at once.
After listening to her story, Laxius sympathized with her and said “wow, it must be difficult for you to leave everything behind and adapt to almost the complete opposite environment, but I believe you can through it. You know you can always ask for my help if you run into problems, though I can't promise I'll always know how to fix it.”
“I am half born btw, I got my wizard gene from my father. It is not easy to leave my parents for a long period of time, but I think this is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that I can't miss. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t scared, but it's just that I find magic to be very cool and awesome.” Laxius turns around to Zach and reply “For the difficulties, you wouldn't mind teaching me some basic everyday spells right? I feel like i have a lot of room to grow.”

"Winning all those competitions and never lost is very cool!" Zach said with gleamed eyes. Zach had never tried to do an academic competition and knowing that the girl in front of him had done it many times and won it really amused him. "That's why I could remember you. You are always in the noticeable spots. Good thing we meet here." Zach listened more to Sere and responded, "It might help. Some classes like Transfiguration, Herbology, and Potions have a base understanding of science." Then he added, "Of course with a touch of magic. So everybody who was raised in a muggle environment could keep up with the subjects with their prior knowledge of science." Then he smiled at her.
After asking the impression question, Laxius, the Ravenclaw boy answered him first. Zach learned that his father was indeed a wizard too and he was indeed a wizard-born. And the feeling he had when he came to Hogwarts somewhat made Zach relate. "I didn't know anything about the houses when I got here. I just accepted everything the Sorting Hats told to me," he said with an awkward smile while scratching the back of his head weakly. "Particular benefit for Ravenclaw?" Zach thought for some moments. "I can't say that having a nice view from our Common Room is one of the particular benefits as Gryffindor also has it. Our uniqueness is only we have a puzzle-giver knocker and we have to answer it whenever we want to enter our Common Room. I think it's inconvenient especially when we are really tired and don't want to do some puzzle-solving or interpretation thing." Then he remembered something, "Ah! We have a lot of books! And I don't know in other dormitories, but in Steppe Eagle Dormitory, we can see the stars just above our head!" Zach sometimes counted the stars when he had a hard time sleeping. Stars couldn't make him sleep but counting could.
Then he looked at Sere as she was answering his question after Laxius did it. Zach nodded at her words and emphatically could relate to her. "I am from a muggle family and I understand what you feel. Magic indeed is making our lives more practical. We can do more things with magic than we can do manually at home," he said to the girl with a smile. He felt his throat was dry and decided to pause for some moments to sip some water before continuing. "And I never thought that we could cast Aberto to open our dorm's door! Maybe I should try it later." The boy was really excited. However, he wondered if it could break the rules or not. Being caught by prefects when casting a simple spell and getting detention was his least favourite thing to do.
Zach was surprised when Laxius then asked him about teaching some basic everyday spells. He didn't have confidence to teach someone and felt nervous when he was about to answer him. "I can't teach you as I, myself, is just a year above you. And I am not a good teacher or studying partner or anything to teach you some spells but we can definitely practice together if you want. I am really excited when I don't have to practice spells alone. You can see me often at the Great Lake or Duelling Club. And I am always at the Great Hall for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!" He said with a bright smile. "We can practice together for anything except for... uh... flying. I'm really bad at it."

"Thank you... I guess?" Sere responded Zach's compliment hesitantly. She didn't expect to get a positive response from the glasses boy. “I will try to do my best in those subjects, then. At least I will try to familiarize myself with those three subjects before pursuing the others. That's a good information."
Whoa! He suddenly turned into a really talkative one! I guess introversion is really just a matter of the energy's source. Sere is surprised to see Laxius talking enthusiastically about his first impressions of being at Hogwarts. This boy seemed to quickly enjoy being here. She raised her eyebrows hearing the help offer from Laxius, "Then you'll be my 'top of the mind' whenever I need someone to help me solve a problem. You have to really expect my owl in the future,” She narrowed her eyes, “You know I am super serious.” Of course, that's just a joke.
Sere also got brief information about the House of Ravenclaw. Have such a beautiful night view? That's so interesting!
“That's so cool! I could only see stars as one of the many types of wall decorations in my dorm. Ah, and I love books too!" She's thinking, "My house is located behind the painting of Fat Lady. In my dorm, I have to complete a kind of 'find the difference' game everytime before enters in. I heard the other dorm of my house gather once every while for a tradition kind of 'werewolf games' at night.” Sere added, "I think every house has a uniqueness that makes it meaningful."
Sere also heard about Laxius' background. He is half-born. I see. So his father studied here as a wizard-born. Laxius also seemed to have a desire for some adventures in Hogwarts, just like herself. It would be fun to go on an adventure with him. And Zach seems to enjoy pretty much everything -except flying- after a year being here, I hope me too eventually.
"Agree, maybe we can practice together someday," Sere drinks a glass of water and then stands up, "I have to go now. My next class starts in about 30 minutes and I still have to take some equipments from my dorm.” Before walking away, she thought for a moment, and then said, “It's really nice to meet you guys... and it was a really good conversation. We have to meet again soon. I'll go first. Bye!”
Sere's stepping out of the Great Hall, taking big steps while lowering her head, hiding her wide smile.
