Rosetta stood on the platform staring at the beautiful train, it took her breath away. Katara was standing with her mother, father couldn't come because he had to go to the ministry for something. Ever since she had been given her letter, Rosetta had tried to keep magic secret from her little sister Katara, but she had given in after she heard about Diagon Ally. But now as she boarded the train she regretted telling her sister. "ROSETTA", Katara called after her big sister, "PLEASE CAN I GET YOUR ROOM?I'll MAKE IT MAGICAL!". Sticking her head out of a window she answered, "Katara you don't know any spells." "I'll just take fathers wand, it won't be that hard" A few minutes of waiting/persuading then the train started to pull out of the station. Looking around, Rosetta realised that she was in an empty compartment, maybe she should have moved to another one, or she could start reading A History Of Magic. Giving into her love of reading Rosetta pulled out her books and started to read. A few moments later she sat up hitting her head on the window. Her bags where flouting around the compartment. "Hey!", Yelling in surprise she quickly dodged a bag. Turing to face the door- she saw a flash of red then the sound of boys laughing floated down the corridor. Shaking her head she took out her book and resumed,"Simple Hex's"

Matt was feeling uneasy. He had just said goodbye to his dad, carried his luggage up to the train, and was now looking for a seat. As he walked the length of the carriage, he saw friends talking to one another, kids arguing about god knows what, and was that an OWL!? Matt was in over his head. How was he going to do this? Who was going to help him through this? Should he have stayed in muggle school?

"OW!" Matt stubbed his toe on someone's briefcase that was poking out of a compartment. Clutching his foot, he looked accusingly at the person who owned the case. The guy looked at him apologetically, and just went back to talking to the people in his compartment. Matt bit his lip and limped on.

Fortunately, that stub gave Matt the mental slap he needed. You need to get a seat first, he thought to himself. Then I don't have to worry about losing my toes. He looked around. He had come in a little late, so there weren't any empty compartments. He looked in the first one he saw. A girl sat there reading a book. She looked nice enough.  He couldn't see the book she was reading, so he decided to find out. Maybe it was a good read.

"Excuse me", Matt asked, dragging his case, his toe throbbing. "Mind if I come in?"

Rosetta was broken from her reading trance to the sound of the compartment door opening, she looked up to see a boy standing on the door way. "Excuse me,can I come in?" Rosetta nodded, he seem nice, not like those boys who had made her bags in to temporary balloons. And she did need to get to know people. "Hi I'm Rosetta, whats your name?" Waiting patiently as the boy put his bags away, Rosetta glanced out of the window then did a double take. They had pulled out of London maybe ten minuets ago, whatever Rosetta was expecting to see it wasn't a lush, green forest. Last time she had look out of the window the had been passing through a few small muggle settlements. How quickly does this train move? She wondered, glancing at her bags, Rosetta picked up Hogwarts a History, might as well figure out comment rooms and the great hall. Sitting down Rosetta nearly started reading when she realised that it was
A. Rude
B. What was the point in reading about the great hall when you about to enter it be this evening.
Puting the book down on the seat next to her, Rosetta waited for an answer

"The name's Matt", he said cheerfully. "Mind if sit here Rosetta?" he gestured toward the seat opposite her. "I've almost lost my foot to cases poking out the carriage!" he joked. Sure, it was an exaggeration, but he did need a seat.

Matt wasn't slow to notice her look out the window. She was clearly engrossed in her book, and he got the feeling he was disturbing her. Oh well, what are you gonna do? Might as well go all in.

Matt still couldn't see the book's cover, so he sat down. What does one ask another wizard/witch? Can't exactly talk about the weather, can you?

"Hopefully this train doesn't get lost." He chuckled, "Your train of thought must be gone forever!"

Holy lord. What was that joke!? That was pitiful! All hopes of a good first impression were tossed out the window. But he could maybe avoid embarrassment if he pretended that that was what he was going for. A bad joke, just to break the ice! So he put on a confident smile, and acted as though he was intentionally making a bad joke. Fingers crossed, she wouldn't be able to tell. Hoo boy, he though. I am off to a great start.

Smiling at the Matt's joke. Rosetta nodded before asking, "So Matt, what house do you want to be in?" Hoping that Matt knew about the different houses, she continued. "I'd like to be in Ravenclaw, my mother was one and her grandma was in it to I like to continue the tradition" Silently shivering at the thought of being in Slytherin (She was a little scared of snakes) She decided to try to figure out what house he would be in. He seemed nice and not uptight, so maybe a Hufflepuff or a Gryffindor, he definitely wasn't cut to be a Slytherin. Her mind was drifting back to the prospect of school. Rosetta wished that she knew more, although what was books where for, she was hoping that people that she meet could tell her as much as they knew so she could put together as much about the coming year as possible. That was the thing that Rosetta hated, not knowing what could happen. She like to be a little bit over prepared. It came from being a "loner" at her last school, she had moved schools and had come into year 4. Shaking her head to release the thoughts, those ones belonged in the past.

Grateful, Matt sat down. "That's cool. My mum says she's a Ravenclaw too! It would be great to be one too I guess. I don't really know much about it."

Matt was pleased that this girl was nice. He got lucky. For all he knew, he could've been stuck with someone who didn't talk or acknowledge him. If that kind of person did happen to be seated with him, he had his school books to read instead.

Before anything though, he decided to try and analyze Rosetta. He had watched the first season of Sherlock on Netflix, and he was hooked. Before he could finish the whole series, he had to go to school. Sherlock Holmes, the main character, could tell anything about anyone be simply looking for the right clues on the person. He decided to do just that.

He scanned her quickly looking for something, anything. First off, she was definitely first year. She looked almost his age, and based off the highlights in her hair(Red or something?), she was probably a plucky person. He eyed her up and down. That probably looked weird, but he saw that there was something poking out from the ruffles on her clothes. It was blueish, a kind of fur. Matt guessed she had a pet. And based how high it was on her body, unless it was a big dog, she had a cat. He could also see very small scratch marks on her wrist to confirm his theory.

But before he would try and blow her away with his amazing detective skills, he did have a question about the whole house thing, and he decided to ask her about it.

"How do you know what house you're in? My mother didn't tell me, said she wanted it to be a 'surprise'".

"Oh well, there's a-", cutting her-self off Rosetta froze as a sudden thought raced through her head at the same speed as a firebolt. "I don't know." Feeling worried she looked back at a history of magic. "maybe this has the answer". A short while later Rosetta emerged for the book. "I found out what happens, there's a hat and it's magical and it sorts you in to your house basted on pure choice or your core personality" Just then she turned to see the food trolley. "Hey, do you want to get some pumpkin juice?" Just then Misty decided that this was the perfect time to try and escape, standing up quickly, walked out to the trolley and bought a pumpkin pastry, as a cover. Disposing Misty onto the lower part of the trolley, she could get her back using a summoning charm later. Rosetta wasn't shore if you where aloud pets or not, but she wan't taking any chances until that was confirmed. Mentally picturing the wand action for Accio, she walked back into the compartment. Matt was watching the trolley closely. Hoping that Matt hadn't noticed the blue-grey cat that was calmly walking up the corridor, Rosetta started to eat the pastry.

"Sure." Matt replied. "As long as you pay!" he joked. "But wait. Firstly, a HAT decides who I live with for the next few years? I should think the wizarding world had fancier clothing. Like a cloak!" Matt was a fan of Doctor Strange, and he though it would be awesome for a magical cloak to decide who he was. It would be way cooler.

"Second, pure choice or core personality? That doesn't work, it's either one, or the other. If not, why can't you just choose where you want to go? Why need the hat anyway?" The whole system was flawed. Cool, but flawed. He supposed it stopped students from being something they didn't want or being something they didn't want to be, but then again, why have the hat?

"Third", Matt paused for a breath,"What is that book? You've held it this whole time, and you haven't put it down. You knew how sorting worked from looking at it. What is it?" He was right on that count. She was clutching the book like a magical time cloak to a bad guy.

All of a sudden Matt stopped talking. He saw that Rosetta was looking at him strangely. Was he being buzz kill? Matt leaned back and took a breath. Was he being annoying. Other people had told him that when he was being all 'Smart' it was annoying. According to his dad, it wasn't polite to do it. It was considered showing off by some people.

"Sorry," he mumbled. "I'm annoying you aren't I?"
