The Magic of Books Closed

Sylvie never considered herself as a hardcore reader, well, before she came to Hogwarts, but now it seemed like she couldn't stop reading. Where had these books been all her life? The stories were full of magic, and not just literally. The stories would lure her in and trap her there, leaving her reading for hours and hours. "Page 234... man, how long has it been?" Sylvie said, looking up at the clock. "A little more than two hours... I can stay for a little while longer..." she whispered and continued to read the book.

A few minutes later Sylvie remembered something she had brought from home. "I should make a new entry in my diary, it has been a while," she thought, pulling it out of her bag and flipping to the newest page. She pulled out her quill and began to write. "Dear Diary, I haven't given an update since my school year has started. I've been too amazed by everything that's happening! I was sorted into Slytherin house and have met some good friends, but I wish I had more. I've never been very good at approaching people, even though I'm extroverted. I am going to try to make more, somehow... I know, I'm weird. Anyways, everything here is better than I ever imagined! The letter was the most amazing opportunity ever given to me, and I still can't believe I'm here! Also, the books here are amazing :3. I'll try to update this more often!-Sylvie"

Sylvie closed the diary and smiled at it. It had a leather cover, with her initials on the front. She gave a deep sigh and went back to her book.

John had just finished almost every single book that he had brought from his home. He soon decided it was time to take a trip to the library. He walked in exited to start a new adventure in a book. He closed his eyes and thought of a book he really wanted to read.

“Got it!” John said. He walked over to where the book should of been. There was one person there he did not recognize. John went by letter by letter until he had found the author’s last name. He looked through the shelf. The book was not there. John got confused. Hogwarts should have the book. He checked again. Still, no dice. John sighed and took a book written by the same author that interested him. John started to read the book. After some time, he lost interest in the book he was reading. He looked at the girl besides him. The girl was reading a book. As curious as he is, John peeked a look at what book the girl was reading. The book the girl was reading was the book that he wanted.

“This person definitely has good taste in books.” John concluded in his mind.

“Hello” John said happily to the girl next to him.

Hello, I am exited for a great year at Hogwarts. I can’t wait to learn new stuff and come in top for all my classes.

Sylvie looked up from her book and noticed looked at the boy who was talking to her. "Oh, hello." She said smiling. A chunk of hair was in her face, so she frowned and tucked it behind her ear. "Looks like I'm not the only one staying late for some reading," she said giggling. She looked over at his book, wondering what the boy was reading. She scanned the page. Seemed somewhat interesting, maybe she could read it sometime. She glanced at the title and made a mental note of it. She noticed the author was the same person as the person who wrote the book she was reading.

"That's interesting, looks like we have the same taste in books." she thought, looking back at the boy.
She noticed that the boy was looking at the book that was laid out in front of her, and something seemed to click in her head at that moment.
"Oh did you want to read this book?" she asked, tilting her head slightly to the right. "I only have a few more pages left, and I'm a quick reader, so if you wait a few minutes I can finish it quickly so you can read it. I wouldn't mind." She should've noticed sooner, that's a little embarrassing.

"Oh, hello." The girl said smiling. "Looks like I'm not the only one staying late for some reading.” The girl seemed enthusiastic about reading, just like him.

“That’s true” John said with a smile almost equal to hers “Don’t you just love reading?”

"Oh did you want to read this book?" The girl asked him. John realized that he was staring and the girls book. He then decided he would try to make friends with the girl because she did not seem like a bad person.

“Oh, no, I just wanted to see what you are reading.” John replied to her question. “Is it good? I just feel that a good book just takes you to amazing places.” He realized that his statement might have sounded a little weird. He suddenly felt a little uneasy. Then he decided there was no reason for uneasiness, NO ONE IS JUDGING.

“I just have to know, would you rather read fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction or science fiction?” John asked straightforwardly. He then realized that might have been the most bold question he had ever asked upon meeting somebody for the first time. He felt a little strange that he was asking all these big questions.

“I guess it is time for a little change? John decided in his mind.

“Before I came to hogwarts, I would’ve probably said Fantasy. I had always been a fan of mystical creatures, but then I realized all those creatures weren’t a myth...” Sylvie grinned, blushing slightly from embarrassment. “Now I’d say I like Historical Fiction. Wizard history is so fascinating, and talented authors know how to make the stories that little bit more interesting. They are so talented! I wish I could write like that,” Sylvie said longling, playing with her hair. “I want to write about my adventures when I grow up, but I don’t think I’m good enough yet.” She looked at all the books lined on the shelves. One day, she would be able to say she’d read all of them, well, she hoped so. Who knows, maybe there was an infinite amount of books, but she was fine with that option as well.

“How about you? Which do you prefer? You seem like you’ve read many books before.” She asked the boy. She looked back at the book, only 5 more pages. She could finish soon. So, while listening to the boy speaking, she continued to read so she could finish quickly, and give the boy the book if he actually wanted it.

“Hmm, I guess I would have to say realistic fiction because as you said what I believe to be fantasy in now real. I wonder what books would be classified as fantasy now that we know magic is real” John replied smiling.

“And yes, I have read many, many books before. Speaking of books, do you recommend any books?” John said and asked. He really wanted to know a good book to read because he just finished a lot of other books.

“I wonder how some can dislike books. They are amazing and give you ideas and perspectives.” John said to the girl.

“It was obvious that the girl enjoyed the book she was reading.” John thought looking at the girl still reading her book intently.

“Oh, I almost forgot, my name is John Williams of Ravenclaw” John said out loud. He felt embarrassed that he forgot a crucial step to meeting new people. Then he remembered that the girl did not tell her name to him also.

“Before I forget, what is your name?” John asked the girl. He looked at the girl who was still reading her book.

“Hopefully she was listening.” John thought to himself. He knew how hard it is to focus on something while reading a book.

"Well, we were forced to get A History of Magic so I read that, and it's pretty good. And this one is good. speaking of which..." Sylvie read the last line and said, "Done!" a little too loudly, and she heard shushing echo through the library. She blushed and looked at her feet. She sheepishly handed the book to the boy. "Here you go..." she whispered, smiling, still looking embarrassed.

"Yeah, I wonder how. I have only hated a few books in my life, and they were mainly stories that made barely any or no sense. I hate when the writers don't put effort into their work. When I write, I make sure everything makes sense. I also hate when the author makes a character overpowered. That's not the way life works, everything needs to be balanced and-oh sorry I'm ranting, aren't I?" Sylvie sighed.

"No one cares about your pet peeves Sylvie!" she thought, embarrassed, again.

"I'm Sylvie Maple of Slytherin, pleasure to meet you. I hope we can be good friends!" she smiled at him. "What book do you recommend, since I'm finished with this one." She said, gesturing to the book that she'd handed to John. "Also, you said that what you believed to be fantasy is now real, so are you a Muggle-born like me? I know it's a random question but I'm just curious I guess," she said, shrugging.

John took the book that the girl just finished reading. Sylvie talked about how some fiction books made the main character to powerful and other stuff like that. John agreed to that.

“I also hate that the good always wins sometimes, the book gets spoiled when you figure out who is good and who is bad.” John said expressing his frustration.

“I have not read many magical books but I have read a history of magic. It opened a new world for me. I never knew that parallel to us, something so magical ever happened.” John said. “Umm, I love Transfiguration. I am not sure if you are... read animal ghosts of Britain.” It was a good book. He had loved learning about the different creatures.

“I am not a muggle-born, but a half-blood. My dad never told me about the different creatures and powers out there.” John said replying to her second question.

“Just curious, what is your favorite muggle book? I must have read over 200 books in the past 2 years now that I have started young adult books. I just really want to get a good one.” John stated. John started at Sylvie waiting for a response. He thought in his mind the many books she could chose from.

"Yeah, I agree." She said, responding to John's comment about the hero's always winning. "If a villain has enough backstory, I sometimes find myself rooting for them instead of the hero. I always love a good villain, which leads to another annoyance of mine, which is when an evil villain is evil for no reason, but that just might be me." She giggled. "I have many book pet peeves as you can probably tell by this point."

"I'll check that one out next, thanks!" Sylvie said to his book recommendation, "I am interested in creatures, even if they aren't magical, so I think I would be interested.

"My favorite muggle book, I'm not sure...." She said, deep in concentration. "The Lord of the Rings is a good book series, and if you are interested in a romance novel, which to be honest you probably aren't, I'd recommend the Selection series, and I won't spoil it but the villains don't actually suck, but some people I know aren't a big fan of love triangles, which I can understand since there are SO MANY...  Also, the hunger games are good, mainly the first one. I have more, but those are the ones that came to mind. Do you have any that you've particularly enjoyed?
