Sylvie pulled down her beanie around her ears to keep them from getting cold, but it didn't help much. "I should have brought my earmuffs..." Sylvie said to herself, but she hadn't expected it to be this cold. From her dormitory window, it looked like every other sunny day, but then again as some people said, looks weren't everything. So there she was, just emerging from the castle and already freezing. She wondered if she was too early, or if the class was canceled, or something that would allow her to head back inside instead of continuing to walk in the freezing cold. Her cheeks and nose were red, and she was paler than usual, but still, she walked on.
The lake in the distance looked calm, almost like glass. "What time is it?" She wondered, looking for her watch in her messenger bag, "Oh, I have some time before class, I'll go skip rocks... wait..." She said, pulling a small blanket out of her bag and wrapping it around herself.
So off she went towards the lake, going off her path and making her way through the grass, which slowly started to itch, but she didn't notice it too much. The sun reflected against the water. She grabbed a flattish pebble she saw nearby and threw it towards the water. No luck. It sunk very shortly after she tossed it. The next one was flatter and was very successful. Eventually, she got tired of skipping rocks and sat under the shade of a tree. She checked the time again. "I'll head off again in 10 minutes, I'll make it," she said as she opened A History of Magic and begun to read.

Phoebe was, yet again, going on another nature walk. This time, she had decided to visit the Great Lake. At first glance, the lake didn't seem to have any special traits, but she knew of the creatures that inhabited the large body of water. She knew of the Grindylows, the merpeople, and the giant squid. She knew of the sinister nature of the Grindylows. She knew of the merpeople colony that dwelt beneath the surface. She knew of the giant squid, but she imagined the giant creature to be the least threatening.
She stared into the water, seeing her reflection. As small fish swam beneath Phoebe's image, sometimes causing the surface to ripple, she noticed a scratch on her cheek. She had no idea how she got the mark, but it probably appeared after her walk through the Forbidden Forest. She paid no mind to it.
Turning around to go back inside, she noticed a girl reading. She seemed to be in her own little world, completely immersed in whatever she was reading. Deciding to be friendly, she sauntered over to the girl, a smile forming on her face.
"Hello," Phoebe said, noticing the girl's scarf. She was in the same house as her. Phoebe's smile brightened. Hopefully she was loud enough to gain the girl's attention.

"Oh, hello," Sylvie said smiling at the girl. She remembered seeing her around in the Slytherin common room. The girl had grey eyes and hair, and Sylvie noticed the scratch on the girl's cheek. "Are you okay? It looks like you got a scratch on your face. Here, I have band-aids in my bag."
Sylvie said reaching into the messenger bag and pulled out a bag of band-aids, and a bottle of disinfector for cut, which helped her clean wounds she frequently got when she was back at her house. She had a lot of things for injuries in her bag because she would 1., always get into some sort of trouble and 2, she had always wanted to take care of animals, so in her bag, she kept band-aids, bandages, disinfector, wipes, a small rag, and tissues. She held the supplies out to the girl, grinning.
"Here, this will help! I can help you put on the band-aid if you'd like, I personally used to find it hard to put them on my face, but I got used to it over time."

Phoebe grinned, accepting the band-aid. "No thank you. I used to scratch myself on thorn bushes multiple times when I was gardening as a little kid, so I can do it," she said, her smile never faltering. Putting the band-aid right on the scratch, she decided to sit next to the girl.
Sitting with her legs crossed in front of her, Phoebe decided to take part in some light conversation. "I see you've decided to take a break," she said. "I myself enjoy taking many breaks, but I often take advantage of that liberty," she smiled sheepishly. "Hence why I'm so terrible at studying." That was true. She almost despised studying, doing whatever she could to get out of the activity. She enjoyed many of her classes, sure, but they never really felt like she was actually studying anything. Despite that, she seemed to be doing well academically.
Phoebe took out her embroidery supplies, continuing her newest work. This time, she had decided to work on a black handkerchief, carefully sewing lilacs into it to make a sort of border. "I prefer to spend my time partaking in activities such as this in my spare time. It seems boring, but I find it calming. I enjoy using colors to add beauty to an every day object," she said, finishing on the purple. She then began to work on the stems, knowing exactly where to place everything.

"That looks really cool good so far!" Sylvie said, looking in awe and the handkerchief in Phoebe's hand. There were currently flowers all over it, and she was currently taking out the green thread. "I used to take a sewing class back at my old school, but my teachers had me sit out after two lessons, both in which I poked my finger badly with the pin, and bleed... a lot..." Sylvie said, looking down at her knees. "It was pretty embarrassing, but hey! I made a wonderful blood-soaked pillow!" she said giggling.
The wind blew in her face, tangling her hair, so she briefly stopped reading her book and got a brush, combing through the knots in her hair. Her brush got stuck a few times, and every time it did it was very painful, but eventually, she got all of them out. She tucked the brush back in her bag. She turned her attention back towards Phoebe and the book. Then she realized something,
"Oh, I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Sylvie, Sylvie Maple. I'm a first year," She felt a little embarrassed for not doing this sooner, but hey, you can't change the past. "What might your name be?"

Phoebe smiled, amused by the fact that Sylvie carried a brush with her. "My name's Phoebe McCrary. I'm also a first year," she said, giggling. "I like the way you think, Sylvie. It's smart to have a brush with you. I used to get my hair tangled up all the time, and every time I would brush it out. I'm tender headed, though, so I stopped brushing it as frequently because of the pain. I'd rather it be tangled than have to endure the feeling of hair being ripped out of my scalp," she said, shivering in an exaggerated manner. She continued to work on her handkerchief.
"If you want, I could help you learn how to do embroidery if you're interested. It's quite easy to do, but it just takes up quite a bit of time. That's why I do it for fun when I'm bored." As Phoebe said that, she finished the stems, running the needle under the last few stitches at the back of the fabric. Pulling out some thread clipping scissors, she carefully cut the excess thread, putting them away when she was finished.
"Just like that," she said, taking the handkerchief out of the embroidery hoop. She held it to the light, getting a more clear look at the design. Bringing the cloth down to her lap, she looked back at the girl.
"Do you want it?" she asked, wondering if the girl could use a new handkerchief.

"Oh, are you sure?" Sylvie said to the request, not knowing how to respond. It was really pretty, but she didn't want to take it from Phoebe. "I-I wouldn't want to take it from you. It looks like you worked hard on it..." Sylvie looked at the handkerchief. How could someone do that, especially on fabric? Sylvie didn't do well when it came to art. She could write really well and was a decent actor and singer, but she had zero talent when it came to drawing, sewing, sculpting, and anything else taught in art class.
"Also, I keep a lot of things in here. When I went to Diagon Alley, a nice witch at one of the shops performed a cool spell which allowed my to store way more things in here then I could before, so my whole existence is basically in this bag, and a major part if my existence is my hairbrush." Sylvie said giggling and twirling her hair with her finger, making little spirals with it. "Are you cold? I have another blanket in my bag, or we can share mine. It's pretty chilly right now, well, I think it's chilly. Who knows, maybe you don't get as cold as I do..."

Phoebe chuckled, finding the girl's rambling rather funny. "You can have it. In fact, I want you to have it. I was just making it for fun, so I really don't mind. As for the blanket, I'm really not that cold. My winter cloak is plenty for me since I live in the more northern part of Scotland. I'm quite used to the chill. Thank you, though. I highly appreciate it," she smiled, holding the kerchief closer to the girl in hopes that she'll accept it.
Phoebe casually sat against the tree, thinking about what she would do for the holidays. "What are you doing for the holidays? My aunt is going on a business trip, so I'm staying here over break. I'm planning on infiltrating the kitchen to bake some nice goods for the house elves. I think they'd appreciate it," she said, drifting off. She began to grow slightly somber, realizing it would be her first Christmas without her family. Knowing that her aunt probably wouldn't be able to celebrate with family, either comforted her a bit. It seemed quite selfish, but she desperately did not want to feel alone.
"My favorite holiday treats are peppernuts," she randomly blurted out, attempting to lighten her mood. "They have a strong flavor, but it's not very sweet. It mainly just tastes like cinnamon and ginger, and I love it," she finished, giving Sylvie a moment to speak.

“Oh okay, thank you! I appreciate it.” Sylvie said, taking the hanker chief. She frowned. Sylvie didn’t want to make it wrinkle. Then Sylvie remembered the rock collection in her bag, full of a arrangement of birthstones. She could keep it in the box the stones were stored in for now. Sylvie reached into her bag, finding the rocks and hearing them click as they collided with each other inside the box. She opened the box and laid the stones out in front of her. She meticulously folded the handkerchief and put it into the box. She put the box into her bag and held the rocks in her hand.
“Do you like to bake? Because if you are going through with that plan I might just have to join you. I’m staying here because my dad and sis are going on a trip. My sister’s winter break starts earlier, and I said that they didn’t have to wait for me. Besides, I still haven’t been everywhere in this giant school!” Sylvie said closing her eyes, grinning. “And my favorite holiday treat is peppermint bark, especially the one from the candy store near my house. My dad agreed to send me a box my owl. I wonder if he knows how to send them by owl...” She said, giggling. "Winter is great, right?"

Phoebe nodded, smiling. "Perhaps we could make some peppermint bark ourselves. I've never put peppermint in chocolate before, so it'd be nice to make something new," she said. "And yeah, I've only seen about half of this school. It's absolutely gigantic," Phoebe held out her arms, emphasizing the size of the school.
"What kind of stones are those?" Phoebe asked, noticing the girl's collection. She almost picked one up to get a closer look, but she decided not to in case she was sensitive about her stones. Phoebe just looked at them from a distance. "They're quite pretty," she said, adjusting her sitting position.
"My aunt has a friend, a muggle who practices Wicca, who talks about healing stones. I don't quite understand it, but she said that many stones have healing and/or protecting properties. According to her, there are stones that have the power to give clarity, spiritual protection, or even happiness to whoever is in close proximity to the stones. I don't understand it, but I find it interesting that stones can have such properties," she said, once again thinking about her home life.
Phoebe was a very curious and open lass, so she couldn't deny the spiritual properties of stones, nor could she accept it. She had never owned any healing stones, so she wouldn't know if it actually worked.
Phoebe continued to sit and admire the stones.
