Was there such thing as fate? Was there some unseen force drawing us all together, leading us all down a planned path, sealing our end? And if there was, could it be predicted? Drawn into your palm, riddled into the stars, soaked into tea leaves? Could regular people predict it, or just seers? What were the limitations, the exceptions, the rules? Were there any? Jaime certainly hoped not.

Now, don't get her wrong-- she wasn't just any regular old witch. In fact, she suspected that she was one of the few people guaranteed to predict the future: A seer. But that said nothing about the variables she didn't control. She could only repeat back what the stars said, for they spoke for themselves. If they spoke at all. And your palm; that's unique to you. If anything, you are your own seer in that scenario. But did any of it really work? Jaime would say yes, but she knew not everyone would agree: her parents certainly didn't. In their educated opinion, destiny and prophecy and fortune telling were all silly plots to try and steal your money. If they'd known she'd brought tarot cards to Hogwarts, they probably would have lost their minds. "You are already going to some hocus-pocus school, you don't need gypsy magic on top of it, as well," Grandma'am would have snapped, promptly dropping the deck in her fire with an evil grin. Ouch. At that thought, Jaime quickly muttered a thank you to whatever fate/prophet/god was out there, for they had certainly saved her from a close one.

She had the deck now, clutched safely in her left hand, as she entered the Great Hall. Choosing an empty spot at the end of the table, she sat down cross-legged and spread the cards in an arc across the table. The wands, swords, pentacles, and cups were all there, as well as The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World, and... Where was The Fool? Peaking back into the box, she peeled her final card from the inside. It had gotten wedged in at an angle, which had made it stick when she tried to shake them all out. At last, she placed it at the end of the line, and admired her deck. It was an old one, with many creases and folds along the edges, but it was surprisingly well taken care of. Whoever had owned it previously had certainly understood how to treat something so valuable. Something that turned their hands, their simple muggle hands, into the powerful hands of fate.

Fate was a tricky thing, which was already enough reason for Hanako not to pay so much attention to it. He was a simpleton, and though he doesn’t like to admit it- somewhere deep within his sarcasm, mindless flirting and mere clownery, even he had to be honest about himself. He was just not someone to dwell too much on the topic. Whatever happens, happens. And if he never joined Hogwarts or found out he was some sort of wizard, he would have most likely lived a life where his main motto is something along the lines off: ‘It do be like that’. It simply wasn’t a thing he saw worth pursuing.

It was actually a main reason why he never took divination as an elective. He had no interest in finding out what fate had in store for him, or seeking ways to divert from his incoming doom or speed up to incoming blessings. Frankly, he was rather lazy. It may have also been from the memories of being called out for being an Aquarious from a student he knew before who had an interest in Zodiacs. What can he say? He can hold a grudge on certain things sometimes.

He never expected his beliefs to be thought over when he walked in the great hall today, seeking a bit of fun with any pretty student. What’s the harm in a little fun flirt, no? However, whether it was luck or not, it was not a pretty student that caught his attention, but a tiny pip squeak with a line of old looking cards in front of her. He couldn’t help but be drawn to the oddity of the situation. Without thinking much, he casually walked up to the girl. Sitting across here like an unapologetic uninvited guest. “ Here there, kid~. Pretty cards you got there” a casual smile was sent to her. “ Trying to make a card tower or something? If so, I want in.”. It was neither a command, nor a joke. Friendly enough, but there there was a subtle snark laced in his tone, as if being kind wasn't his intention. He wouldn’t mind if she was too off put by his blunt arrival and refused. Hanako was just a bored teen with too much confidence to be alright with normal greetings. Hi hello my name is yada yada? Nah nah. He had his eye on the prize. And the prize being a chance to make a mean card tower. It was clear he was too invested in the idea of making a card tower, that he hasn’t really looked at the rather well known designs the cards lined up had.

Jaime preferred not to be disturbed ever-- much less when she was trying to connect to unseen forces-- but when an older Slytherin boy approached her, she didn't have much choice. She'd just finished laying out her array of cards and was just about to gather them and shuffle when she heard his voice coming from across the table.

Here there, kid~. Pretty cards you got there” he said with a casual smile. Slowly looking up, Jaime kept her expression monotone as she regarded him. He wasn't very tall, and even with a quick glance, she could tell he was probably a lot frailer than most people she knew. Jaime opened her mouth to say thank you but quickly stopped herself. She was still unsure if he was being serious or not, and since she knew she wasn't great at social cues, she decided it would be better play it safe for now. “ Trying to make a card tower or something? If so, I want in.” he added, making Jaime's eyebrows jump. He had to be kidding. A card tower? With tarot cards? Instinctively, she drew the cards a little closer as if to protect them.

"No, I'm not 'trying to make a card tower'," Jaime retorted, her brow furrowed. "Generally, that's not the kind of thing you do with tarot cards." And even if that was a normal thing, you usually don't start a tower off with all the cards laid out. Was the boy blind or just ignorant? Both, perhaps.

Now, Jaime wasn't usually this judgemental. She didn't care enough about people she didn't know to make any sort of opinion. Her Grandma'am was the opposite, analyzing everybody and never being all that impressed. And while Grandma'am probably thought this was normal, it only served to fuel Jaime's dislike of her. However, something about this boy rubbed Jaime the wrong way. Maybe it was his overly casual demeanour or the way he seemed to disregard the significance of the tarot cards. Whatever it was, Jaime couldn't shake off her feeling of pure annoyance.

He failed to suppress a light smile when the younger student started bringing the cards closer to her. A valid reaction, really. Hanako’s greetings have never been the most warm and welcoming. Though he failed to understand why she seemed to cherish them. They were just card’s weren’t they? Flimsy pieces of paper with pretty designs on them. At her insistence that the cards were far too precious to be used for card towers, Hanako managed a small chuckle but feigned a weak surrender with his hands. “ Alright alright, no tower cards. A shame, though. We could’ve have a neat fun time making it” He commented, seemingly unapologetic considering the tone he used.

His earlier question he had about why she was so protective of these cards came to light with her next words. “ Tarot cards” Hanako repeated, a flash of curiosity flashed his features before it faded into another casual smile. “ Those cards that use drawings to tell stories about your life?”. He didn’t mean to sound like he was mocking her. However blatant ignorance could be equally offensive in several circumstances. Even more so that Hanako didn’t seem aware - or even cared enough about his oversimplified summary of the girls precious cards. “ So, what. Are you a seer or something?”

It was blatantly clear that the 5th year did not take divination as an elective. If he weren’t attending a wizarding school, perhaps he would’ve been far more sceptical of the idea of cards telling your futures. But hey, anything could happen with magic. But hopefully, he could steer the girl into forgetting about that and just making a card tower with him. It was hard to comprehend why anyone would flip a few cards compared to actually making an awesome card tower. Like, c’mon.
