It was no secret that most wizarding families placed much weight on their ancestry. Particularly in the pure-blood families with magical blood traced back thousands of generations, it was indeed laughable at times just how much some folk cared about whether their uncles, cousins, grandmother, great-great grandfather were of magical blood. Renelle had always scoffed at those kind of people- why did it matter if your entire family or some distant relative that lived hundreds of years ago was a wizard or not?

The Daltons and never been a family that cared much about blood statuses. Sure, they were a family of wizards and witches, but neither of her parents had ever talked much about that kind of stuff. That was why it was such a surprise when Renelle received a family tapestry of her father’s side of the family by owl, one fateful Sunday at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

She stared at the letter in which it had come, still not fully processing what had just happened. Yes, she supposed anyone could have a tapestry to keep track of their relatives, but the first year had always been rathe runner the assumption that it was only those pure-blood, haughty families that still believed in supposed ‘blood purity’ that had them. Renelle’s dad was a half-blood, and while she knew both her grandparents, and a few cousins, she had never really given much thought as to the rest of her extended family.

Honestly, it wasn’t even the tapestry itself that shocked her so much. It was kind of nice to know more about her dad’s side of the family, and it was rather interesting to see those people who were related to her’s names and pictures. No, the main reason for the Ravenclaw being frozen to the floor of the Owlery, with those annoying loud school owls all around, was one particular name on the page— Cassiopeia Alarie, drawn as her cousin.

Cassiopeia Alarie? The Slytherin first year who looked like they’d never seen a comb in their life? She was her cousin? According to the tapestry, they apparently shared the same great-grandmother. Renelle had never met her (she died a long time ago), but now she was discovering that the witch was the link between some random student here at Hogwarts and herself?

Quickly, she folded up the tapestry, putting it into her pocket. Maybe it sounded terrible, but the girl had no interest in gaining another cousin, particularly not one as… chaotic-looking as Cassiopeia. Hopefully, the Slytherin would never discover this connection, and she would keep this tapestry a secret. Yes. That sounded like a solid plan.

Cassi has never been close with anyone on their father's side excluding their father's mother and his sister, none of them even wanted to talk to Cassi after their father died, so Cassi wants nothing to do with them...unless they're really nice. This particular day they're just examining their father's side of the family's tapestry, their mother sent it to them, they don't know how she got it but she got it.

Their blood ran cold as they seen a familiar name and portrait: Renelle Dalton, the ravenclaw with the dark hair and equally dark eyes?

This is certainly a shock. Somehow it being a shock turned into asking people where Renelle is, luckily when they walked into the Owlery to ask where Renelle is, they found her.

Cassi thought they seen her put something in her pocket but maybe it was their imagination, as nervous as they are they are still way too damn extroverted, so they took a leap of faith by approaching her and speaking to her. But assuming she doesn't know, Cassi decides to drop the figurative nuclear-atomic bomb on her.

"Hi! Did you know that we're cousins? Isn't that exciting?" Maybe that wasn't the way to do that but Cassi's bubbly personality outweighs common sense at this point. Common sense would've been to try to flatten down their wilder then before hair, fix their blonde highlights, and make sure their pupils aren't dilated to the point of insanity but then again
Bubbly personality > Common Sense.

Cassi is beaming, which is like a very annoying smile but that's what Cassi does. ALL. THE. DAMN. TIME.

Coincidence. That had never been a word Renelle believed in, at least until today. Sorry, but it was ridiculous to believe that there some sort of deeper power, bringing people and events together, so as to achieve a certain eventual goal. In her opinion, it was all nonesense people who didn’t like to understand things made up. Yet, the figure right in front of her seemed to be erasing everything she thought she knew about all of that.

Cassiopeia Alarie stood right in front of her, her voice ringing throughout the Owlery the moment the Ravenclaw decided on her ‘amazing plan’. How was this even possible? She peered closer at the Slytherin, as if expecting it al lot be a dream or mirage. Nope. Wild, uncontrollably ginger locks, wide emerald eyes. Even those questionable blond highlights were the same.

And even worse, the moment the girl saw her, she announced to Renelle that they were cousins. Of course I know, she thought, rather irritated. How does she know?

“Uh, sure?” It came out as more of a question. Shaking her head as if to clear her thoughts, Renelle quickly added, ” Wait- how do you know?”

Maybe coincidences were not entirely non-existent, but surely it would be too much of a stretch to think that Cassiopeia had just somehow received the news just like herself? Or had she been holding on to the knowledge for some time, and chose this precise moment to reveal it? All of those options seemed equally as unlikely as the next. For once, Renelle was fully dumbfounded.
