Min-seo looked at all the people filling the halls. She closed her eyes, taking deep breaths as she heard the cheers. GRYFFINDOR! HUFFLEPUFF! RAVENCLAW! SLYTHERIN! She scrunched her eyes together at the noise. She looked up at the banners adorning the walls. The cheers got louder in her ears. She finally opened her eyes. "This is NOTHING like Korea." She thought. She just hoped to get into a house that would welcome her and understand that her first language wasn't English. "Kim, Min-seo!" She flinched at her name being called. She timidly walked over to the stool, trying to get through all the taller people (God dang her small frame!) and sat down. When the hat was placed on her head, it fell a bit over her eyes. "Ah! Interesting veeeerrryyy interesting, very smart, I see. Bit timid, but that's alright, very cunning.....Tragic, very tragic incident I see........hmmm.......butwhere to put you? I know......

SLYTHERIN!

Min-seo looked over to the table with the people wearing green robes clapping ethusiastically. She gave a timid smile and sat down, a few people high fiving her. Hopefully they would take care of her!

Kaia's mouth had dropped open when she saw the huge castle that was Hogwarts, her father had told her as much as he could about Hogwarts but she had never imagined it to be this amazing. She sat in awe in the small boat for a few seconds before she realised that she had to get out.

When she walked into the entrance hall again she stared in awe and again it was better then she had imagined, she took a quick peek into the Great Hall before she was busied off with the other first years. A professor stood at the top of a small set of steps, it was announced that they would be sorted. Kaia stood nervously and looked around at the other first years some of them seemed nervous and others looked very confident, Kaia's father had told her about the houses but he had never told her how they were sorted. She heard a few whispers about how they would be sorted, some said they had to battle something and some said that they might have to cast a spell or show some sort of magic ability, this made Kaia even more nervous, she new some spells but she was not able to cast any of them, Im obviously not going to be a Ravenclaw then Kaia thought.

A few students names were called before she had heard hers

'Burke, Kaia' Called a voice.

She took a few steps forward and she could feel all eyes on her, she quickly hurried up to a stool and sat down, she felt something being placed upon her head, then she heard a voice

'Hmm, interesting, a father of Gryffindor and a muggle born mother, where to put you, where to put you, ' said the voice mysteriously

'You would do well in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, but it'll have to be..

HUFFLEPUFF

Kaia sighed in relief, mostly because she didn't have to battle anything, she walked over to the table of cheering Hufflepuffs and sat down smiling.

Sylvia was already feeling overwhelmed from the enchanted boat ride to the magical castle that housed hundred of magical students. Hogwarts was bigger than she could ever imagine. And no, it was not a floating, fleshy fortress with warts like her grandmother said it was, instead it was large archaic castle with floating candles and flying ghost men.

Sylvia fidgeted in her seat as the kids her age were being sorted by the sorting hat. Her grandmother said that the Sorting Hat would bite off the noses of any children they didn't like. Of course, Sylvia didn't believe most of the things her grandmother said, but now that she's seen the Sorting Hat in all it's tweedy glory....she wasn't so sure.

"Sylvia Blackwood."

Oh cripes, she wasn't paying attention at all. Sylvia jumped to her feet and quickly scurried towards the smirking hat. Syliva could feel all the eyes in the hall narrow onto her, she could hear the metal scraping of steel utensil against metal plates.

Don't go making a fool of yourself now, Slyvia. She thought darkly to herself, feeling a little lightheaded.

Sylvia stared down at the tweedy hat with a stern expression. This was going to be the biggest decision in her entire school life...possibly, and it going to be decided by some reject scarecrow hat. Your house basically dictates the circle of people you're going to be with your entire time at Hogwarts! How can she not be terrified!

"Scared, little one?" The sorting hat grinned as it was being lifted up. "I wont bite."

Sylvia grunted, planting her bottom on the chair. "I'm not scared of you biting me." She muttered under her breath. That was a lie. Just a little bit. "You don't even have teeth. I'm more worried that you're going to make the wrong choice. I don't want you to get in the way of me making friends."

The hat cackled and it was placed on top of her head.

"The sorting hat is never wrong!" The hat said it as it wiggled on top of her head. "You'll make friends in due time."

Syliva frowned and gripped the cloth of her robes. Please give me a good house. I want to make friends. She prayed as she clamped her eyes shut. Her mother was a Ravenclaw and her grandmother- well, her grandmother gave her a different answer each time. She wouldn't mind being placed in a house like Ravenclaw, though she doubted that she had the intelligence for such an esteemed house. Gryffindor was too...boisterous for her taste and Slytherin was just plain scary looking. If she had to choose, she'd be with Hufflepuff where the people were warm and welcoming. Sylvia knew if she was placed in Hufflepuff, she'd find the friends she was looking for.

As if reading her thoughts the Sorting Hat cackled again.

"You’re still a little seed to you have time to grow
Hufflepuff is nice, but with time you’ll know
That out of all these great houses that fill this large room.
It is in the house of Slytherin where you will bloom!"

Slyvia's eyes flew up as the Great Hall erupted into a loud cheer. "Slytherin?" She whispered under her breath in shock. Slytherin? That was were all the bad witches and wizards go to. What is she going to do in a house like Slytherin?

She was starting to feel all dizzy and overwhelmed again. She wasted no time making her way to the serpent's table and plopped down one of her new housemates. Slowly, she began to pile food onto her plate, trying to ignore the hot sting in the corner of her eyes and her shaking hands. To be honest, she didn't feel like eating at all, those peas didn't seem all that appetizing. Regardless, it would be rude not to eat at her own welcoming party, right? She'll take a few bites here and there.

For the rest of the night, Sylvia stared at the grinning sorting hat. It's words replying over and over again in her head.

"The sorting hat is never wrong!"

Zeeke was very thankful that he wasn't the first one to be called out. That way he had a chance to see how this whole procedure was being performed and possibly get a chance to calm himself down. The Hall was full with both Students and Teachers. The constant gaze from the ones who were already sitting was making him very nervous, especially since he knew that his sister was somewhere out there as well.

With each passing Student, he started to grow more and more impatient, as well as being filled with curiousity of where would the Hat put him in, and it was driving him nuts. After a while, he was so bored and frustrated, "when is it gonna be my turn..." - the boy asked himself as he was rolling his eyes to the side, thinking that "this was taking eternity", so he decided to scan the room and try to find something to occupy his mind with. There was something going on in the corner, Professors were whispering something to one-another, yet Zeeke was unable to tell what it was about, he tried to focus and read by their moving lips, when suddenly his name was called.

"Zeeke Asgeir" - one of the Professors shouted... there was a silence.
"Mr. Asgeir?" - they asked, which was followed again by silence.
"ASGEIR !" - They yelled. The echo of it was loud enough to reach the young boy's ears.

"Finally!" - the boy replied out loudly, in excited tone, while heading towards the chair.
He then sat on the furniture and tried to anticipate what the hat would say.

"Ah-h-h, another Asgeir" - the Hat announced, "though this one is much easier" - it added. "If power is what You seek and want to prove Yourself, then I know just the house for You on the road to greatness" - said the Sorting Hat.

S-S-SLYTHERIN !

Young Zeeke was very content, mainly because he was told that the Hat is never wrong, so he had no reason to doubt it, so he went to search for a place where to sit on his House's table.

Raven shuffled nervously, as she stood with her fellow First Years. Her hair was tied into a high ponytail, and her crystal blue eyes looked at the floor. The first two lots were done. Her heart began to race, as she knew her time was ebbing ever closer. She wondered if her brother had been this nervous. No, he was a cool customer she was just nervous all the time ordering books and animals to humans.

"Carter, Raven!" she heard her name being called. She just prayed she didn't fall up the stairs. She ascended the steps to the stool and sat down. The hat was placed on her head. "Ah, clever and ambitious. Witty and creative... Hmmm. I know where I'm going to put you.... SLYTHERIN!" the sorting hat proclaimed. A cheer erupted from a tabled decorated in silver and emerald. Raven relaxed. Her entire family had been in this house, so she was pleased to keep the family line of serpents going.

Raven practically jogged over to the Slytherin table where she took her seat next to another first year. Raven didn't notice until now she had been shaking. However, she pinned it down to her excitement of finally coming to Hogwarts and being placed into the House she hoped to join to make her parents proud of her.

Riley took a deep breath as he followed the other first years into the school. The headmaster began to speak and he rolled his eyes as they all shuffled into the Great Hall. All he was hoping was that he would not get Gryffindor, he did not want to be in a house with his brothers. His eyes flitted over to the Gryffindor table where two of them were sitting together, and he quickly looked away, taking his spot at the front of the room.

"Williams, Riley"

His name was called, and he headed up to the stool and sat. Well at least he tried to sit. Riley missed the stool completely, and he fell on his butt. The entire hall erupted into snickers, and he groaned, standing and sitting on the stool, feeling the hat placed on his head.

"Please... Please don't give me Gryffindor..." He muttered, and the hat laughed.

"But you're so brave... so determined. You have so much nerve, would be ready to jump into action to defend what you believe. Really, you would make the perfect Gryffindor. But... you have a dark side... you must not let that distract you from your potential. Hard times will come... you will be tested."

Riley froze as the hat sighed, repeating his plea repeatedly.

"GRYFFINDOR" The hat exclaimed, and Riley groaned, opening his eyes to see everyone at the table except for his brothers burst into cheers.

He took a seat at the table, scowling at the hat as he ate the feast in front of him. He was not happy, but the hat's words stuck with him... hard times... tests. Riley wasn't sure what to make of it. But he put that aside and focused on the feat ahead of him. How on earth would he fit into Gryffindor?

Without the dark, we'd never see the stars

Clem took a shaky breath as he looked around the Great Hall, eyes wide. He felt slightly faint, and also flustered. But he knew that he couldn't be the only one, and he looked around, flashing thin smile to other nervous-looking students. As he waited for his name to be called, he spent most of the time staring at his feet and inspecting the cold floor.
"Clem Burdon!" He jumped when his name was called, shuffling towards the hat. He found it difficult to keep a straight face as the hat fell over his eyes and caused his vision to go dark. But he didn't bother pulling it up, and just allowed it to continue speaking and reading his mind.
He bit his lip. He didnwant to be Ravenclaw, like his older brother, and definitely not Slitherin as he didn't like the sound of that house. Gryffindoor soul just be too expecting of him.
Meaning that left Hufflepuff. The Sorting hat called out that very house and Clam smiled, removing the Sorting host from his head. A few clasp were heard, but not many.
He whispered to himself, moving towards the Hufflepuff, "I feel like I'll fit in just right here..."
He took a seat, unsure whether to speak up and introduce himself, or save that for later.

Sitting there, the air felt almost smothering causing my lungs to sputter for those marvelous intakes of breaths; my hands growing sweatier by the minute. Everything came down to this one moment, the day when all first year students such as myself would receive the news that would shape our lives forever: Sorting Day.

Seated between two large boys, big for their size I deduced, listening as names where called out from the Hat, proclaiming and sorting, naturally, which house this particular individual would call home; I wondered what house I would be dispatched to. Breaking my thoughts, the boy to my left stood up, discovered the lot he would spend the next seven years with, and sat down; muttering something I could not quite catch under his breath. Four more called out. Then the boy to my right, and my anticipation began to shake uncontrollably.

Six more students then like a flash of reality, I heard my name called. Standing to my feet, unsure how to address the Hat I bowed ever so slightly replying,
Present!" The Hall began to fill with muffled laughs and I believe a round of few timed claps. Quickly my pale cheeks began to turn a shade of red, not anger mind you but of embarrassment. When the proverbial dust settled, the Hat spoke one word outloud.

Gryffindor!"

"Always Believe in yourself....even when others may not."

Wolfie was American. From that big city, you know the one. Landmarks people saw in movies were simply home to her. The background to a day trip. Architecture only noticed when it was no longer around. Losing what you didn't notice was also one of several causes of a particular ailment. That 'It's nice here, but I couldn't live anywhere but NYC' traveler's sickness. And being blasé was a symptom.

So when she crossed the Great Hall Wolfie didn't gawk up at the ceiling like a freaking tourist. Wolfie felt it was all a little much, wasn't it? Couldn't they have just left the Hall's ceiling open or something? But no. This was a wizard hall and wizards had to impress on other wizards how much of a wizard they were. And how they definitely weren't muggles. Hogwarts was so extra.

The castle wasn't the only thing Wolfie felt apart from. Many children from New England's upper crust were expected to show a certain maturity. Wolfie had always obliged. Always trying to ape the older kids in the hope they'd let her hang out. Just not the kind of older kid she was supposed to become. She wanted to be one of the bad ones. She got her wish and crossed her nation with a group them where she learned to worry about things like being abandoned in an unknown city, how to stop hunger pains with no money, where to sleep out of the rain. So when her classmates fretted over getting invited to a birthday party Wolfie felt a gulf between them and her. She knew she was the different one though. There wasn't anything wrong with them. Or her for that matter. Wolfie just wasn't even there.

Yet for all her worldly wisdom and street smarts when Wolfie sat down on that stool in the Great Hall, hat on her head, she felt like she had swallowed an entire bag of marbles.

"Oh, another nervous Brose is it?"

Not nervous.

Wolfie realized she was nervous. Her face twisted into a snarl before she stopped mid twist. She wasn't at fault here. All of this was stupid. All those gowned goofs gawking up at her. A whole table of them ready to congratulate her for a decision she wasn't even going to make. The sorting hat telling her who she was and where she belonged. The only house she wanted to be in was an ocean away and it was a rent-stabilized apartment.

But Wolfie was Wolfie, and being sorted into a Hogwarts house meant nothing. Not to her. She would continue being who she was and do the same things and act the same way. That of course was a very Gryffindor way to think. Sometimes a rebellion against a system simply reinforces it. But no, Wolfie was ready for anything. The sorting hat had no power over her. Almost.

"Of course you aren't nervous my dearie. Now, where to go. Ah yes. I know. They value what you think you don't have. You'll have to live more lives before you see it in yourself, Brose. Oh, they'll be the best at taking you apart. And putting you back together again. Probably more than once. You'll grow to like your new home."

OoooOOOooooh. How creepy, very scary, Mister Professor Hat. Put me in HufflePuff and I will stomp you into a fucking sorting rug.

The hat's laugh boomed. It knew better than most an empty threat. But there was no sense in teasing the young girl further. The sorting hat pronounced its sentence.

GRYFFINDOR!

The ride on the train was long and exhausting, even though I had slept most of the way. I had bought a few chocolate frogs to save for later for whatever house I would be sorted in. So far, I'm still alone, no friend's have been made. But that's to be expected, right? It's not as if Mum has taught me any skills in that department. When we finally reached the grand school, I was in awe. Hogwarts was massive, stretching to be as tall as the skies and bigger than earth itself.

As the thunder boomed through the sky, I followed the grounds-keeper along with the rest of my peers. "It's gonna be pouring cats and rabbits!" A boy shouted to my left, speaking not to me but to someone else as he pulled the robe above his head. "It's cats and dogs, Louie, where'd you get rabbits from?" The other boy glared in annoyance. I ignored the rest of the conversation as they tussled in the background, one rubbing his knuckles on top of the others head. I let out a sigh, "Is this what I'll be dealing with soon?" I wonder aloud. Once we crossed the rivers to the school grounds, it started to pour but half of the students were in already, their squeaky shoes hitting the hall floor.

I wondered what house I'd be sorted in. From what Mum said, Dad was in Gryffindor before he croaked so surely I'll make it to that one. Mum never said what house she were in.

As the first-years entered the mess hall, all eyes were on us. That was to be expected. Silence overcame the room as the man Ackerley.. I believe, spoke.

"Welcome dear students. I am Ackerley Blackburn, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," There were whispers all around before I was bumped into, "Ouch!" I whined. "Sorry" The boy whispered as Mr. Blackburn carried on. "The house that will be chosen for you shall represent qualities that are truly present within each of you. Your future house shall be like a second family,"

I drowned the Headmaster's voice out, sighing as I think about life back home. There wasn't much to miss, but anything right now is less boring than this. I just wanted to be sorted into Gryffindor so I can eat and sleep afterwards. I was ready, for tomorrow will be a new day.

As the Ceremony finally began, I stood up taller to listen. I curiously watched as the first few students were sorted into their respective houses, each receiving handshakes or claps on the back. Everyone seemed happy. I didn't even realize that they were already on the letter B lastnames before my name was called.

"Belka Bibble"

I froze for a moment as everyone looked around to see who was next. The guy behind me gave me a nudge and I awkwardly smiled before heading to the hat. Boy, was it ugly.. As the hat was set upon me, it started to hum. I was a bit confused at this. Are you singing? I wondered in my head, startled when he answered to me aloud.

"Why yes I am, got your attention now, haven't I?" The Hat chuckled. "Oh little one, filled with such neglect. Sheer talented ignored... yes indeed." The Hat paused, as if searching my soul. "Hmmm interesting, a father of Gryffindor. Another Bibble wanting to please the family. These are big shoes to fill, yes they are. Are you up for the task?"

I find myself shaking for the first time ever. My thoughts desperately pouring out, please sort me in Gryffindor, please please please. I want to be like my Father.

"Ah, Clever and Ambitious. Witty and Creative. You wish to strive for greatness, don't you? Brave and powerful. Ah, yes. I know just where to put you. If Gryffindor is where you seek.. you'll have to be placed in... S-S-SLYTHERIN!!!"

My heart dropped, ears pounding. I took the stupid hat off as tears whelmed in my eyes. Fucking great, Slytherin.

"I am never wrong, little one. You are destined for greatness. Slytherin is where you best fit." The Hat spoke. I looked back and it smiled.

Belka Bibble
