On Friday afternoon, EmmaLee burst out of the doors leading to the Hogwarts Courtyard, excited for the weekend to start and anxious to get out of the stuffy castle. It was unseasonably warm for November and the pale French girl was going to make the most of it before being shut inside for the winter. It was likely to be the very last warm day in a long while and she was finally rested enough to properly enjoy it.
While southern France has never gotten much snow, she now knew the depth that winter could get in some areas. Glasgow also didn't get too much snow, but the cold there was still more than she could ever want to tolerate and New York City winters were the last thing she wanted to think about in terms of ice and snow. All of a sudden she was very thankful she hadn't ended up at Ilvermorny after all. A shiver ran down her spine at the thought of the chill. Her Ilvermorny friends had probably been freezing for a month by now, although they had not commented about it quite yet. Probably because Kiernan was lava-blooded and Alura and Grace were ice princesses that were used to the cold.
Chuckling at the memory of their friendly teasing about her dislike of the cold, EmmaLee rushed over to the far side of the fountain, took a seat on it's edge, careful not to sit in a wet or cold spot, and pulled out a note book. She had taken George Henry's advice and begun to journal her dreams in order to sort them out while she was awake. It had been quite helpful in quelling her nightmares, and she had gotten a good amount of insight into her other, calmer dreams as well once they had returned.
Some of her dreams were just plain ridiculous, but she had ended up with a couple that seemed to be pointing somewhere. She would have to ask George about them and how to truly interpret them later.
She had also simply started a daily journal that she was enjoying. A quick jotting down of interesting events every day and fun little jokes, moments, or information she learned. She usually wrote in the dream journal in the morning, analyzed it during lunch, and wrote in her daily journal in the afternoon, and so here she sat.
After a few pages of writing her mind began to wander and she looked out around the beautiful Hogwarts grounds. Even as it died and wilted and settled into sleep for the winter, it was breathtaking. She started to sing in a light soprano as she stared across the Black Lake, the waters sparkling as the sun went down.

Anna sighed a sigh of relief as she exited the castle. She was growing a bit more irritated every day she had to stay indoors studying. Her subjects were fascinating for sure, but she needed a break. She filled her lungs with fresh air from the courtyard. She missed her grandpas garden and her home, she could get out whenever she wanted, go pick flowers, play with her Abraxan horses, paint with her grandma, or at the very least read outside. She was getting homesick. There was a bit more time before the Christmas break, and she felt like the time stretched for centuries. She started walking towards the fountain, meaning to go around it and sit on one of the benches, her eyes were downcast." speaking "
' thinking '
At first she thought she was imagining it, hearing a French lullaby her mother used to sing her to sleep, there was no way someone was actually singing it. But as she lifted her head to look around, she noticed a girl, holding a book and singing the lullaby to herself while sitting on the fountain edge. Anna stood there dumbstruck, glued to the ground as the voice of her mother intertwined with the lovely voice of the blonde haired girl. Memories of many nights in her parents bed as her mothers soft voice lulled her to sleep swarmed through her head making the young first year even more sad. Hot tears slipped down her cheeks and she stifled a whimper. She sped past the girl and the fountain, hoping she didn’t notice her crying. That would simply be embarrassing. She sat on one of the overshadowed benches and pulling out her handkerchief wept silently, as more and more happy memories overflooded her.

EmmaLee was jolted out of concentrating on writing and jumped a little in surprise as, all of a sudden, another young girl rushed past her in a flurry of dark hair and robes. She shouldn't have been as surprised as she was that someone else had come outside to enjoy the last warm day of the year, but this girl clearly was not outside to enjoy the warm weather. She seemed to be out here because everyone else had taken to the grounds to enjoy the more grassy outdoors.
The Hufflepuff girl frowned in concern as she watched her fellow student run to the other side of the courtyard. A first year Ravenclaw from what EmmaLee could see of her size and the blue tones peeking out on her robes as she ran. The other girl was crying quietly, but very clearly crying and upset.
~Je me demande ce qui est arrivé...~ I wonder what happened... EmmaLee thought as she looked around the area to see if someone in particular had upset the girl. EmmaLee would not tolerate any kind of bully, even if she did not know the person being bullied, and if it was a mere conflict between friends, maybe she could still help.
Regardless of EmmaLee's assistive intentions, she could not see any other person enjoying the courtyard or otherwise. It was just her and the other girl here. EmmaLee turned back to watch the girl and crinkled her pale eyebrows in further concern as she closed her book and put it back in her bag as she decided to see if she could console the little Ravenclaw. She stood up from the fountain and tentatively walked over to the other girl.
"'Allo, there." She said quietly and cautiously, clutching the strap of her bag with both pale hands and approaching slowly as if confronting a scared animal. "May I ask what's wrong and if there is anything I can do to help?" Her French accent was light, but clearly decernable as ever as she spoke to the girl.

Fly, Fly, Butterfly Friends
Anna wanted to stop crying, she really did, but she has been hiding her homesickness for the last week or so, and all those pent up tears just wouldn’t stop falling. Trying to wipe them away she failed miserably and her handkerchief was soaked. She jerked her head up as she heard someone approaching. It was the girl from the fountain, the one that was singing. She approached Anna slowly and concerned, asked if she was alright. Anna opened her mouth to say yes, she even had a smile on her lips, but her throat closed up and she choked on unsaid words.
Finally after of moment of thinking she said: “No, I’m not alright”. She sobbed a bit quieter, and her tears have slowed down. She hickuped once and then the dam holding her feelings back, broke. “I- I’ve been missing home a lot. I was never, ever away from it for this long. And, and Hogwarts is great and all, but- but I miss them”, her tears were streaming again, as she tried to talk in between sniffs and hiccups. “I miss maman and papa, grandma and grandpa too, and, and everything is just too much for me right now”. She didn’t know why, but after letting all of that out, she felt just a little better. She softly blowed her nose into the almost ruined handkerchief, and looked at the girl with reddened eyes, still glossy with tears.
“I’m sorry I went off like that. It’s just, that song you were singing, it’s a song my maman used to sing me to sleep, and it reminded me of her. You have a lovely voice”, she added at the end wanting to change a subject, still feeling embarrassed for crying in front of the girl she had no clue about, and then venting to her.

EmmaLee smiled sympathetically at the girl and riffled through her bag for a light blue handkerchief. Once she found it, she offered it to the girl and sat next to her, folding her legs underneath her gracefully. She knew exactly how the girl was feeling. Although she had chosen to express it with anger instead of sadness. She had been so angry when her mother told her that she would be going Hogwarts instead of Ilvermorny with her friends that she had shut herself up in her room for a week and refused to speak to anyone. She had eventually mourned and settled with the idea, so it had been a lot easier when she finally got here to not be homesick.
"Not a worry at all," EmmaLee said, reaching out and putting a comforting hand on the other girl's shoulder. "I think that that's probably the 'ardest part about coming to 'Ogwarts. Missing the people who 'ave to stay behind." She chuckled a little. "I think my own maman is having a harder time with my being gone than I am. I miss her, but I kind of already did my pouting about missing everyone before I came. Also, I went to the 'Ogwarts summer camp and I think that did 'elp with the 'omesickness." She said, putting a finger to her bottom lip thoughtfully. She had definitely done the weeping and trouble sleeping part during summer camp.
Suddenly, an idea occurred to her. EmmaLee reached back into her bag and produced a small brown package. She offered the contents to the girl. Inside the bag were little medium hard candies that were shaped like little lavender hearts.
"These are my favorite lavender honey candies. My maman makes them and sends them to me. They always make me feel better and remind me of her love. So does that song, to be honest. We used to sing it and a couple of others while we were gardening." She said, smiling at the memory of gardening in the French sunlight and of spending Saturdays making candies to sell at the market or just pass out to the few other children in town. She frowned a little, becoming a little homesick for France itself, but quickly righted her face and smiled warmly at the other girl. Not a time for her own problems. "I'm EmmaLee LeDames, by the way. What's your name?"

Anna smiled wobbly as the girl handed her a new handkerchief. She nodded thankful and wiped away the rest of her tears, dabbing her runny nose. She must look so miserable right now with a red face and puffy eyes. Anna made a mental note to request some chamomile tea bags from the lovely house elfs, and maybe some cookies to lift her mood up a bit more. Her thoughts were quieted by a gentle squeeze on her shoulder. She listened to the girl talk about her own homesickness and, a Hogwarts Summer camp?
“I haven’t heard of it”, her voice was a tad hoarser than normal, “Would you like telling me more about it”. She liked the presence the girl next to her gave off. She was calm and had a soothing way of talking, and she gave Anna a feeling of home. She suddenly turned towards her bag and pulled out a brown package, filled with what seemed to be lavender colored sweets. And just when Anna was thinking of sweets. As she offered them to Anna, she explained that her mother made them, it made Anna feel honored that she’d like to share them with her. “Thank you very much!”, she picked up one and popped it into her mouth, it started melting almost immediately and was very sweet and yummy.
“These are so good! Your maman is very talented”, Anna smiled feeling so much better now that she talked with someone, and someone who shared similar experiences as her. She then realized she never learned the girls name and just as she was about to introduce herself, the blondie beat her to it and said her name was EmmaLee. “It is a pleasure to meet you EmmaLee. I’m Anna Blackrose. Thank you for making my day better”, she added, flashing a bright grin at Emma.

Erk! EmmaLee hadn't had the greatest time at camp. Between the literally nightmarish Prank Wars and the humiliating other events she had participated in, she didn't have a lot of good things to say about it. Frankly, she wasn't planning on going at all this coming summer. She's much rather go to Japan with her parents or hang out in New York with her other friends, but she couldn't tell Anna that. Other people had certainly enjoyed camp, and she had made a lot of friends, foreign and from Hogwarts, that she wouldn't have met otherwise. So there were some highlights.
"You're very welcome, Anna, and thank you. Maybe I can show you how to make them sometime in the kitchens. They're very easy to make and good for your throat." EmmaLee explained as the other girl introduced herself and took some candy,
"As far as camp goes, admittedly, I did not 'ave all that much fun aside from the very good friends that I made from my tent." She said, scratching her cheek with her index finger awkwardly. Shoot. She had meant to say only good things. "I mean," She continued quickly, back-peddling, "lots of other people 'ad fun. I just 'ad a string of bad luck." She amended, laughing a little at herself.
"'Ogwarts hosts a camp every summer, I guess now, that incoming first years and all of the other schools are invited to. Last summer it was at the Quidditch Pitch in London and had a pirate theme that was rather fun. I was tentmates with some of the Ilvermorny students and had a great time getting to know them, but I really didn't do well with any of the activities they had planned." EmmaLee explained further, playing with hem of her dress awkwardly. "It also took a month out of my summer and my family and friends had to go on vacation without me. So yeah." She finished, shrugging and turning towards Anna with a reassuring smile at her new friend in what she hoped was an encouraging way.
"Lots of other people 'ad a really good time and always enjoy it if you ever want to go yourself. They do all school sports matches, too, if that's something you are interested in watching or participating in." EmmaLee offered finally, popping another candy in her mouth to keep her from continuing to ramble. She wasn't sure if she was trying to convince Anna to go or not go at this point.

Emma offered to show Anna how to make the candy herself, and that made Anna’s eyes sparkle. “Really?! It would be my pleasure, at home grandma is the one who cooks and bakes, while maman mom only joins in occasionally.” Anna tried to remember if she ever helped out in the kitchen, most of her memories were of her giggling and running around the table and licking off the spoons as her parents laughed with her and her grandpa shielding her as grandma would usher her out to have some peace while she bakes. All those memories made her sad again so she tried to stop remembering and instead listen to EmmaLee talk about the camp.
It turns out she had very mixed feelings about it. Anna mulled over it in her head, another candy melting in her mouth. “Well it seems fun, but also demanding and challenging. If I were to go I’d probably go when I’m older, maybe around fourth year?”, she added more for herself. “I’d love to meet more people and have fun over the summer, but a month is a bit too long. Oh well, I’ll think about it more”, she smiled. She liked EmmaLee, finding that they both had a lot in common, she was already thinking of how often they could meet up, being in different houses and all.
“Do you have a favourite place at Hogwarts where you go to often? Mine is the library, and the Great Lake when the weather is nice, I also love the classes we have in the Astronomy tower, I’d have to go there sometime on my own”, Anna trailed off a bit at the end, her thoughts going to the stars and constellations. She tuned back in just in time to hear Emma’s response.

EmmaLee sat next to her new friend and rolled her own candy around her tongue as she listened and though about her answers to Anna's questions, slowly enjoying the honey-lavender taste as the candy melted.
She definitely wanted to figure out a way to make the candy with her new friend, but needed to figure out a way how. She had visited the kitchens to get food for picnics and meetings with friends, but the house elves had told her that she was too young to make anything herself there without a teacher or other adult present. Which was understandable. Maybe they could do it in the potions classroom. All they really needed to do was boil sugar and honey and make lavender tea. she smiled as she resolved to ask the potions professor about it later. The lighter girl nodded as Anna decided to try camp when she was older.
"Oui.Yes. I may try again when I am older as well." EmmaLee said, pulling her knees towards her chest, wrapping her slender arms around them, and placing her cheek on top to look at Anna as they continued conversing.
Anna was sweet as the candy they shared and EmmaLee thought it was nice to meet someone who cared about their family and home as much as she did. Sometimes she felt alone in that aspect. Everyone else she had met seemed just fine with the change of boarding school and being without their loved ones, or at least they did a good job of hiding it, while EmmaLee found it very lonely.
"I love the Great Lake as well." She said with a giggle. Then she lifted her head and shifted her eyes conspiratorially, grinning as she lowered her voice to a whisper. "I figured out that the giant squid and the grindylows rather enjoy bits of sandwiches." She said quietly, sharing her secret.
Then, at her normal volume, she said, "I 'aven't spent much time in the library other than studying, though. I've been trying to take advantage of the warm weather while we still have it." As she said this, a cool gust of wind blew threw the courtyard, nipping the girls' noses and fingers, warning of the coming chill tomorrow. "But I 'ave been meaning to find out what kind of books the library 'as besides school books." EmmaLee continued, shivering slightly at the crisp wind. "What do you think about meeting in the library later to study and read together?" She asked with a smile.
"I can introduce you to my cat, Minx." She said this almost as an afterthought. Minx was a very good comforter and maybe the animal would further help her new friend feel less homesick and lonely.

Fly, Fly, Butterfly Friends
Anna was now in a much better mood then just minutes prior. The blonde girl next to her has certainly made an impact on her, and so did her marvelous candies. She looked over to EmmaLee and listened to her talk about her favourite places at Hogwarts, and she also shared a little secret about seemingly hungry lake creatures. Anna covered her mouth with her hand, stifling a giggle, and shared a conspirational look with the Hufflepuff. She cleared her throat and pretended nothing was said as Emma moved onto talking about the library, and the weather. The chilly wind ruffled their hair and Anna pulled her robes towards herself tighter.
“I’d love to meet in the library. I can show you some of the best books I found there”, Anna smiled warmly, contrasting the sudden shift in the courtyard’s temperature. “How about we head inside for now, I don’t want to catch a cold”. Anna stood up and offered a hand to EmmaLee. “What time is it?”, she wondered aloud, “Do you reckon it’s time for lunch already?”. Anna didn’t feel quite hungry, but if it meant the girls would continue talking she’d have a few bites. She hoped EmmaLee would keep her company for a little while longer.
