AS SOON AS DINNER ended, a black and red blur rushed out of the Great Hall, bag hanging from her shoulder. Ignoring the usual chatter from students, or how some glanced at her in disapproval, Juliet ran to the fourth floor. There were other closer bathrooms she could get to much faster, but that specific lavatory was closer to the Gryffindor common room, and the girl had no time to waste after this.

There was a pile of homework to get to - some due by tomorrow. See, she didn't forget about them. The girl was so scared of getting a bad grade that merely looking down at her parchment made her uneasy. She didn't want to get bad grades right from the get-go, so Juliet stayed up until very late, writing down her answers carefully, and double-checking everything.

Juliet was still adapting to her new schedule. Lessons weren't hard to follow (although she did get lost from time to time), but as soon as it was time to work on her own, her brain fried and forgot everything she'd learned thus far.

Her heavy steps echoed in the hallways; her bag made it awkward to move, inkwells and quills clashing in there, and she was glad she had tied her hair up in a ponytail, or she'd be a mess right now, hair pointing in different directions.

Juliet pushed the door open, nearly slipping on the girls' lavatory tiles.

A tiny squeal left her mouth. The lavatory was chilly, more so than the hallways. A shiver ran up her spine. She looked around the bathroom - its grey stone walls fit the rest of the castle, and because it's empty, it looked ghostly, like something out of a muggle movie about witches. Although it wasn't as bad as the abandoned toilets, Juliet feared the possibility of meeting another ghost in there.

The Gryffindor entered the first bathroom stall, tossing her things to the floor, so she could get out of there quickly. Juliet's brown eyes darted around the stall, listening carefully. No noise came from the hallways. The walls were so thick all her ears caught was an occasional groan from the old pipes. Juliet rubbed her hands together.

Then, there was something else... The sound of steps.

Winona's second year at Hogwarts, even though it has only been a few weeks, has been an absolute disaster so far. She expected people to approach her with respect and admiration, but the reality has been exactly the opposite of what she anticipated. From being dragged to the hospital wing to getting punched in her pretty face, her recent experiences have made her feel paranoid.

It seemed that everyone was, in some way, after her. Was it because of jealousy? The Slytherin happened to be a hardworking student with straight O's, also the spoiled child of a wealthy, pure-blood family. It would not be too far-fetched to assume that people were jealous of her. Or maybe her social skills were much worse than she thought. No matter the reason, Winona felt the need to take matters into her own hands to ensure her own safety. Despite being skilled at spell-casting, Winona had started to notice that in times of emergency, pulling out a wand, remembering and performing the correct wand movement and incantation... took time and concentration, to say the least. Being able to carry something simple, like a knife, could help her feel much safer. Unfortunately, the Hogwarts staff were not the type of people to casually hand out such items to students.

With a clever little plan in her mind, Winona entered the quiet lavatory. She walked around for a while to check if the place was completely empty. There were no students in sight, and no sounds other than her footsteps. Winona took out her wand and held it tightly, taking a deep breath to encourage herself. Facing one of the mirrors, she said the incantation "Flipendo." A beam of light left the tip of her wand, and the knockback jinx applied too much force for the mirror to endure. In the blink of an eye, the mirror shattered into several pieces, most of which fell onto the ground. Winona kneeled down and investigated the scattered pieces to find one that is the right size to carry around in her pocket.

There she stood, on her knees on the lavatory floor, grinning awkwardly with a shard of the broken mirror in her hands. Next time someone tries to mess with me, I'll show them. The little shard was nowhere near as sharp as a knife, but when held at the right angle, it was definitely possible to cut human skin with it. Now, the only thing left for Winona to do was to leave like nothing happened. Luckily, no one heard the noise of the mirror breaking and came in to check what happened, or at least it seemed. Thankfully, no one heard it...

FOLLOWING THE STEPS, there was silence. It didn't last long.

Juliet pushed the stall door to take a look outside. She winched when she spotted someone - a short girl with black hair. At first, she didn't know who it was, but before she could hide back inside the stall, Juliet saw her face in the mirror and froze. Her eyes widened. It's Winona - the cruel Slytherin who destroyed her football and threatened to do the same to her about a week ago.

A frown took over her features, squinting at Winona's direction for causing such drama in her life right on their first meeting. Juliet didn't hold grudges most of the time - she was open to forgiving people if they wanted to make amends; when they really deserved it. However, it was clear from that day that Winona didn't regret what she had done.

Juliet continued to watch out of curiosity. She stepped out of the stall when Winona pulled out her wand. A quiet gasp left her mouth when the mirror shattered, following her encantation - broken pieces dropping to the ground. Mum used to tell her that breaking mirrors caused 7 years of bad luck, and though she had never believed it before, a part of her wished it was true, and that Winona would suffer the consequences... Wait. She had to. Juliet froze. That was school property! Students weren't allowed to cast spells recklessly.

"What are you doing?" Juliet let out, taking some quick steps towards Winona, but keeping a good distance between them in case the Slytherin wanted to use that shard for something.

The sudden sound coming from behind made Winona have a little jumpscare and let out a high-pitched yelp. She was just about to leave peacefully, but now she needed to deal with whoever had caught her in the act. Tough luck. The sudden shock caused her to tighten her grip on the broken piece of glass, resulting in a few of her fingers getting cut in the process. It definitely hurt, but she managed to hide it. When she got up and faced the person, she was able to recognize the annoying first-year she had happened to meet a while back.

The last thing Winona needed at that moment was a witness. Coming up with an excuse in just a couple of seconds was challenging enough, but what could possibly explain breaking a mirror out of nowhere? With a childish, anxious pout on her face, the Slytherin resorted to doing what she knew best: being mean and secretive. "It's none of your business, dork."

She could not possibly attack the Gryffindor, even though they were alone. Anyone could enter the lavatory at any given time, and they were in the middle of the school building. Trying her best to find a way to get out of the situation as quietly and swiftly as possible, Winona attempted to reason with the younger student. "Don't make a scene, okay? It doesn't concern you in any way." It definitely was not the most convincing thing to say in order to keep someone silent, but at least she tried.

WELL, YES, IT DIDN'T concern Juliet - at all. It didn't affect her in any way, shape, or form. There were no adults around. If anyone entered the lavatory later, they wouldn't be able to link either of the girls to the broken mirror. She could very well get out of the lavatory, move on with her life, and pretend she hadn't seen Winona break school property.

And if this was anyone else, or if she'd been a little bit nicer, maybe she would have. Juliet wasn't a snitch - she knew when to keep quiet, but... she didn't trust the Slytherin. Not at all. Not after their first interaction, when Winona made her feel small and stupid, taking away one of the few muggle objects Juliet brought with her to Hogwarts.

Most of the time, she wasn't interested in payback. Mum taught her to forgive and forget. But right now, it was only fair, considering what the older girl had done.

Juliet took another step in her direction, squinting her eyes. Last time, she saw a confident and strong Winona. Right now, however, she looked like a kid - hiding behind her pout and mean words.

The Gryffindor crossed her arms, tilting her head in the other's direction, playing the bad cop, "Why do you need that for, hm? Do you not know you're breaking the rules?"

The first-year, who had been so easy for Winona to bully previously, was now standing with much more confidence in front of her. Being caught in the middle of doing something questionable was certainly threatening her scary, mean image toward Juliet. However, she was not going to give up and play nice so easily. Being a witness was not enough evidence to get someone in trouble anyway, right?

Winona quickly placed the small broken piece of glass in her pocket and responded in an annoyed manner. "Oh, is that so? How are you going to prove that exactly? As far as I know, I've been nothing but a good, well-behaved student." Despite actually feeling anxious about the possibility of getting reported to a prefect or professor, she tried her best to look unbothered.

With a slight smirk on her face, the Slytherin continued to speak, hoping to get Juliet to leave her alone. "In fact, you could be the one who broke school rules! There's nothing stopping me from saying you did it. Except the fact that I don't want to deal with you in the slightest." Her first priority was still to leave the scene as quickly and quietly as possible. The younger girl did not seem like a very nosy person from the few interactions they had, and hopefully, she would not press the matter any further.

WITH THE WAY JULIET behaved the last time they met, you'd expect her to shrink and run away after Winona's words, too scared to do anything about it. Perhaps there would be another time in the future for that - but not today. She had no fear and hesitation in her.

Her Gryffindor traits finally showed because the girl remained impassive. She had no way to prove Winona was the one to break the glass and would have to pray the professors would listen to her.

"I'm a good student too, and I have no reason to lie," She said, not at all bothered by the girl's threat. Of course, she'd say something like that. The professors weren't so naive to believe Winona either if she opened her mouth to lie. The two of them would end up in detention together if they were unable to find out who the real culprit was. "I'm a first-year and a muggle-born - there's no way you can convince them I was the one to do that,"

Juliet let her arms fall. She looked down - not wanting to waste much time with this girl again. It's obvious they'd never get along now - they were different, and being her usually cheerful self wouldn't work with Winona.

"I'll keep watching you," Juliet said. "If you bother me or break the rules again, I'll tell them,"

The interaction between the two so far was almost completely different compared to the first time they met. The young Gryffindor was standing up against Winona. It was truly annoying, almost threatening to the Slytherin's ego. "You're in no position to blackmail me! Who the hell do you think you are?" she said with a little scoff, a frown forming on her face.

Taking a step closer to Juliet, she raised her index finger as if to scold the younger student as she continued to speak in a more condescending manner. "If you even try to get me in trouble, I'll give you a reason to do so." For the time being, her threats remained empty, but she definitely would not hesitate to start a fight if the other tried to get nosy. Even the empty, quiet lavatory seemed like a good enough spot to do it at the moment, but Winona chose to ignore the hostile urges for now.

Deep down, Winona thought that the way Juliet mentioned reporting her proved how correct her thoughts about needing to protect herself were. It seemed like everyone she met was after her for some reason, rooting for her downfall. Maybe she was just exaggerating the situation, but all Winona could think of was how alone she was while the world was out to get her.

THE GRYFFINDOR PUFFED HER cheeks and furrowed her brows, not at all intimidated by Winona's words. Not this time. It seemed no matter what the girl said, it didn't affect Juliet in the slightest. Her stare was hard and judgemental, like a disapproving parent. Juliet was sure of herself and wasn't going to let the older Slytherin get away with this.

She squinted when Winona pointed a finger at her, face still unbothered. She couldn't help but wonder why Winona acted like this, so different than all the other students Juliet had the pleasure of meeting at Hogwarts. Even the people she didn't get along with weren't anywhere near as complicated as this Slytherin girl.

"Whatever you say, Winona," The words came out a lot more sarcastically than intended, but the first-year didn't feel bad for it. If this was anyone else, she would've promptly stuttered over her words, to make sure she didn't upset them. But not right now.

Juliet held eye contact surprisingly well. She ran her hands over her school robes, before taking a step away. Not because she was scared, but because she didn't want to stand so close to Winona.

"Look, now that we're done here... I'm going back to the Gryffindor common room," Juliet let out. "Have a good day. Don't break the rules again, or I'll make sure you get detention,"

With that, she turned around to leave, ready to ignore whatever came out of the other's voice.
