Jack hurried outdoors with his lunch, eagerly waiting for the Hufflepuff, Jake Morris, to follow him. For whatever reason, he felt like eating outside that day. The weather seemed decent enough and he felt he hadn't been getting enough sun as of late, particularly since Slytherin's common room and dorm rooms were in the dungeons. Besides, he wanted to talk to Jake about animals, which he knew the badger loved, and what better place to talk about animals than in the great outdoors?

He didn't have just any animal in mind, however. Jack wanted to know what Jake thought about patroni and animagi. He wondered if Jake, like himself, had his sights set on becoming an animagus someday. He knew Jake loved animals, but would he want to become one himself? And with patroni, they were supposed to represent your happiest memory, but how did animals manifest from memories unless said memories were about animals themselves? All these were really quite fascinating mysteries to Jack and he longed to talk about them with someone. Jake just seemed like the ideal person to discuss them with.

"Hey, Little Badger, have you ever thought of becoming an animagus?" he called over his shoulder as he scouted around for a decent area to sit in the vibrantly green, soft grass. Eventually he found a nice spot under a tree, flopped down on it, and patted the space next to him, indicating for his peer to seat himself there. "Or, at least, what shape your patronus might take if you manage to make one?"

Jake took a deep breath and took in the cold air as he stepped outside, holding a cheese sandwich he'd taken from the Great Hall. It was a nice day for a lunch outside, and lately he'd been so busy with being a duel captain and being a prefect and trying to keep up with too many classes that he didn't feel like he had enough time to just see his friends. It was hard, since his friends were the reason that he enjoyed coming to Hogwarts so much in the first place. He'd jumped at the chance to have some time with Jack. Having it outside on a nice spring day was even better. He seemed to think better outside in the fresh air.

He probably should have minded being called "Little Badger", he supposed. After all, it felt like he'd spent all year trying to show people that he WASN'T little anymore. Being small in size made it a lot harder to be taken seriously, which made being a prefect really hard. But for some reason when Jack said it he didn't really mind. It was kinda nice. He'd first called him that years ago. He didn't really KNOW what Jack meant by it - maybe he called all the other kids by some kind of animal, or maybe it showed distance, not the opposite - but Jake kinda thought maybe it was one of those ways that he could tell they were friends. So he didn't really mind the nickname (so long as nobody else was around to hear it).

They'd been friends for a long time, even though he didn't let Jack know that of course. But he thought by now Jack had to know, right? It was kind of strange. Jake kind of felt like if you didn't say the word, Jack didn't have nearly as much problem with the concept.

Still, Jake had let it stop bothering him. It had confused him to no end when he was younger, but he'd learned over time that friendships could take all kinds of shapes and sizes, and they didn't always look one way. What worked for some people didn't work for others. But you'd be a lot happier when you realized that all of it was ok and just accepted people how they were. Even if Jack wouldn't call you a friend, he'd show it in other ways, whether he knew it or not.

"Of course!" Jake said enthusiastically, as he took a seat in the cool grass, taking a moment to make sure he didn't sit upon his cloak. Being an animagus...he'd thought about it a lot since he was eleven. As soon as he'd found out it was even POSSIBLE. "I think about it all the time. It'd be so cool....plus I bet it would make it much easier to be a magizoologist. I mean you could probably even talk to animals, I think. Kinda. I dunno what I'd be though...I mean I think about it a lot but I still don't know."

"But um, w-well, I dunno about my patronus... I mean...it's so hard to tell what a patronus is gonna look like, right? Maybe a badger or something? Since you know, Hufflepuff is sort of a place that's really important to me and a lot of my friends are Hufflepuff...Or, you know, a dog, maybe, I dunno..." he said with a sheepish shrug. It was no secret amongst those who knew Jake about his affinity for his stuffed dog Freddie, but he had started being a lot more private about that. After all, nobody had to know a fourteen-year-old still slept with a stuffed animal. Especially not a prefect. Not that he thought Jack would care...He'd never cared about that kind of stuff before. Still, the older Jake got the more he realized the ways in which he wasn't. He didn't want everybody else to see that too. But it all came down to what a patronus meant. A patronus was supposed to protect you, right? So maybe it just might be a dog.

"What about you? Do you wanna be an animagus?" Jake asked curiously. Jack must've brought it up for SOME reason.
