It was a typical Saturday morning for Damian: he had woken up early, got ready and went again in the courtyard to study; he liked that place, it was quiet enough for a good reading and allowed Damian to stay in the sunlight and take advantage of the warm temperature. His plan was to bring some books and simply chill near the fountain, letting the waters help him focus for the morning.

He had just arrived there when he noticed something on the ground, near the fountain: someone had left a book, or maybe they just dropped it. “Oh? Who leaves a book like that? Didn’t they notice?” he thought, and swiftly moved some steps to get closer and get it. It looked intact on the inside, but it was a bit dirty on the cover, probably from falling. He brushed some of the dirt off, and read the title.

He didn’t know the author nor the title of the book, it looked completely different from any other book he had read in the past. He browsed through the pages and read some lines here and there out of curiosity, not understanding much of it. There were many terms he didn’t know, and that was weird considering that even if he was still a child he had read many books for his age.

After browsing for a while, he checked if the owner had left something for identification, and luckily there was a name on the first page: Madi McQuade. The name didn’t ring any bells, so he thought it would have been best to ask around to see where he could have found them.

Few minutes later he was entering the library since someone suggested to look there and provided a brief physical description of Madi, the book securely placed in his leather bag, and started scanning for the owner. He finally saw someone resembling the description, so he moved some steps in her direction and approached her.

“Hey, are you Madi? I found your book in the courtyard.” he said and took the book out of the bag to show her. “By the way, what kind of book is this? I couldn’t understand a thing.” he added, and didn’t even think about apologising for reading her book without permission.

Where was it? All she knew was that it had fallen out of her bag. She hadn't read it that day, so she couldn't have left it anywhere, and since she couldn't have left it anywhere, that meant it fell out of her bag, which also meant that she didn't have a clue where it was. So she'd have to track multiple hallways, multiple classrooms, basically every single place she'd gone that day.

So, after twenty five minutes of searching around the castle with absolutely no luck, she retreated to the library. She hadn't been in the library that day, though. She hadn't even been in it that week. But whatever. Maybe being in the library would help her think about where her book might have been.

She heard her name and looked up. There was a boy standing in front of her, holding her book. "Yeah, I'm Madi. Thank you so, so much. I've been looking for this." She said, reaching out and taking the book from him, while he asked what kind of book it was, saying that he couldn't understand a thing. "It's a Muggle book. It's one of my favorites, I brought it from home, I'm Muggle-born. It would be very confusing if you didn't know a lot about Muggles." Madi explained.

Damian handed the book to Madi: there were still some traces of dirt, but overall it was in good condition. He would have freaked out to see one of his books with even a tiny bit of dirt, but maybe not everyone was as perfectionist as him, and it was probably a good thing. “You’re welcome. It was on the ground, good thing you wrote your name on it.” he said, and let her take it. He was still really curious, though: he had some difficulties reading, no matter how hard he tried to deny it, but that wasn’t the reason he didn’t understand many words of that book.

“I see. That explains a lot.” he said, moving his eyes from the book to Madi. So, she was born among Muggles? Something about it caught the attention of Damian, who took a seat and couldn’t refrain from asking more. “So, these are Muggle books? They look similar to n-” he stopped middle sentence to avoid saying ‘normal’, it wouldn’t have been very kind of him. “I mean, magic books. But there are many terms I’ve never seen, for example MP3, or underground?” he continued, citing the first two names he recalled from that brief reading.

He knew he should have gone back to studying, but that was his first encounter with someone who was in some sort of way part of the Muggle world, and before that he only heard about it in books or small tales from his parents or his family. He wasn’t morbidly curious, but he certainly wanted to know more, hoping that Madi wouldn’t have minded that little privacy invasion.

"It must have fallen out of my bag while I was walking through the courtyard and I didn't notice. Thank you again." Madi said, and began attempting to brush some of the dirt off her book. She didn't mind a little dirt, but she would have much preferred if there was no dirt at all on it.

The boy spoke again. He mentioned that they looked very similar to something. Madi didn't know what he was going to say, since he never finished his sentence. Madi assumed he meant the Wizarding world books. "Yeah, they are. Except, of course, no magic." She smiled.

The boy then mentioned several things in the book he didn't understand, like MP3 and Underground. "Well, an MP3 player is a little portable music player. You can carry it around with you and listen to music that you have downloaded on it." Madi began. She didn't know a lot about MP3 or MP3 players, and was sure some of that was wrong. "If you're talking about The London Underground, that's an underground transportation system that runs through London and other parts of England." Madi decided to go with the simplest explanation she could for both of those.

He looked as she started brushing her book exactly as he tried to do when he found that in the courtyard: she must have really cared about that book, even if she didn’t have the same reaction Damian would have had if the book was his. A couple more brushes and the book would have looked as good as new.

Damian struggled a bit to imagine the Muggle world where everyone had to live without magic: in his family there were no Muggles that could explain their daily life to the boy, and the only connections he had were long distance relatives who barely knew him at all. During those first weeks of school he surely had met new people, but never deepened the bond to a level where they talked about their families; and so that was his first actual encounter with someone who knew how Muggles lived.

“So, no magic, huh?” he replied, still thinking about it. “I’m sure this will come out as rude but... how can people live without magic?” His voice was purely curious, no malicious intent at all, but still he didn’t know how Madi could have reacted to that question. He nodded as she explained the two words he cited as an example and tried to make some comparisons with magic objects that could resemble them. “Oh... Hm...” he occasionally mumbled while thinking.

“What you are saying is that more or less there is a Muggle equivalent to everything magic? Or are there some limitations?” he asked at the end, curious to know whether people could actually live without magic and without feeling the lack of it.

Madi smiled at the boy's question. She wasn't making fun of it or thinking it was stupid, she just liked the question, mainly because no one had ever asked her it before. "Because most of us don't know about magic. It wasn't 'oh, life would be so much easier with magic' we just did what it took to survive." she said. "Sorry, that probably wasn't helpful at all. I question that sometimes too, ever since I learned about magic." she paused. "Imagine your magic was taken away. You wouldn't just give up, you would find a way to survive. That's basically what Muggles do, except they never had magic and never knew about it." Madi still didn't think that would be much help, but that was all she could give.

"I don't think of it like that, although I'm sure there are a lot of people who do. Muggles and wizards have very different lifestyles. Muggles have their things, and wizards have theirs. There's a lot of similarities between the two, but I don't think that whatever the magical community has, Muggles have a non-magical equivalent." Madi said, and then added, "At least that was I got from what you were saying, correct me if I was wrong." She didn't really understand what the boy said, but she tried to get her input on it.
