The Explosion
Dialogue: #03733b @Bridgette Mooney@ Méabh ReganTuesday, September the 26th, 2023
Kids could be very careless, and this wasn’t helped by the fact that they usually had a very short attention span. Now normally, as a person grows, they become more careful, but that wasn’t the case with an eleven-year-old boy named John Lattimer who seemed just as reckless as a six-year-old. Now, John might have been reckless, but he was smart. In fact, seeing as he (almost) always knew the right answer to a professor's question, despite never actually paying attention in class, you might think that Mr. Lattimer was easily one of the smartest first years attending Hogwarts, and you’d be right.
But all of that knowledge was purely theoretical because when we began practicing casting Reparo and Tarantallegra in Charms class, he was one of the kids that didn’t finish with his task. Why? Because he and his friend Jacob were goofing off for most of the time. Oh, and when we were handling mandrakes, he put his earmuffs on poorly so when he turned around while gripping a mandrake, the muff on his right ear slipped and he got knocked out cold. Poor kid, what a headache he must have had when he woke up in the Hospital Wing.
Anyways, by now I should have painted you a pretty clear picture about who John Lattimer is; a reckless smartass. So now I’m going to tell you about an event that happened on one of the Tuesdays of my first year. It was on this day that we were going to be brewing the Forgetfulness Potion for the first time in our Potions Class. I should also tell you that I shared this class with Mr. Lattimer. In fact, I sat two people away from him. For the most part, class went by pretty well. Everyone was brewing their potion the way they were supposed to, or so it seemed. Soon enough, I began hearing a sizzling noise a little down the line. ‘Crap.’ I thought, someone either made some highly corrosive substance that was melting down their cauldron, or they had turned their cauldron into a makeshift tnt.
It was definitely the second one, because when I looked over to my left, no cauldron was melting, and there definitely wasn’t any substance that was eating the table alive. No, the noise was coming from someone’s cauldron. I looked up and saw the face of a scared, eleven-year-old boy, who knew he just messed up. John Lattimer. “Oh no…” He said in a very worried tone. Before anyone could do anything, there was a sudden BANG! I felt someone grasp my left arm. The smoke cleared, and we saw the cauldron broken in half, with its contents spilled out. As Professor Regan rushed over to help take care of the situation, I turned around to face the person who was tightly gripping my arm. They were about a head shorter than me, and they had shoulder-length red hair. “Well hello.” I said.

The Explosion

Words: 517 | For: @Rodney Hughes
Now, Bridgette wasn't always so touchy with people they had just met, in fact they preferred no physical content at all. But sometimes their body and their instincts got the better of them, and right before that makeshift bomb had gone off two seats down from them and the rather cute Hufflepuff boy beside them, they had felt a small twist in their gut telling them to get ready and get down!
They tried to pull the cute Hufflepuff down with them, covering their head with little regard for the probably confused look on his face as they did so, and about two or three seconds later a large, nasty BOOM! sounded from two seats down.
They weren't particularly worried about coming off as weird for touching somebody else when they didn't know them or whatever as it was for safety, right? Right. Only for safety. Definitely not a teensy weensy little aesthetic crush on their table mate. Once everyone had recovered slightly from the blast, they turned their green gaze on the boy and the question that left his mouth was all but lost in the commotion of everyone around them. Bridgette smiled, before quickly letting go of the boys arm and stepping back a few paces. "Ah, erm, sorry for pulling on you like that! Didn't mean ta hurt ya if I did." They apologized for their silly actions, holding onto the table for a little extra support as the smoke from the explosion began making it's way towards the two of them.
"Didn't want ya to get hurt, yeah? But still, my bad if that was uhm, weird. Or anything." Their shy smile was accompanied by holding out a hand for the other to shake. "I'm Bridgette Mooney, but you can call me Brig if Bridgette's a mouthful. I know it can be sometimes. You could also call me Mooney if ya want to, I've had a couple people call me that too. Mainly teachers. What's your name?" They weren't a flirt, hadn't ever done it before, but he brought out that shy smile, hair twirling part of them that seemed to be present in any young individual.
Bridgette watched the commotion behind the boy, taking in the situation finally as their stomach twisted again and they ducked as something or the other went flying towards them from the opposite side of the room. Recovering quite quickly they took a glance over at the individual that had exploded their own cauldron, causing another explosion of stupidly epic proportions. How was this Potions class going so wrong? Did they just have the, like, worst students possible in this particular class? They smiled again as they dusted off their uniform and waiting for an answer from the Hufflepuff. Other people were milling about in concerned and loud voices, and they wondered how long it would take the Professor to get everyone back into their seats or if class would be dismissed by the time they were ready to keep working on their assignment. Only time could tell, and Bridgette wasn't a very big fan of time.

The girl looked at me and smiled before letting go of my arm and stepping back a bit. “Ah, erm, sorry for pulling on you like that! Didn’t mean ta hurt ya if I did.” Well, no, she didn’t hurt me at all, although her grip on my arm was quite tight so I could see as to why she would think that she hurt me. “Didn’t want ya to get hurt, yeah? But still, my bad if that was uhm, weird. Or anything.” The girl then stretched out her hand for me to shake as she introduced herself. “I’m Bridgette Mooney, but you can call me Brig if Bridgette’s a mouthful. I know it can be sometimes. You could also call me Mooney if ya want to, I’ve had a couple people call me that too. Mainly teachers. What’s your name?”
I shook the girl’s hand and a smile formed on her face. I smiled as well. I heard an explosion in the background and turned around to see another kid, Miss Downing, standing in front of her broken cauldron that she somehow managed to explode. Or perhaps someone exploded it for her, who knows? That reminded me of my own potion, and when I looked up at the clock, it was about time to add two pinches of my crushed mixture to the potion. But that could wait another minute. “It’s a pleasure to officially meet you Mx. Mooney, the name’s Rodney Hughes.” I started. “Do not worry, you did not hurt me, and it wasn’t weird at all; you were just following your instincts to protect yourself. Indeed, that explosion was a bit frightening if I do say so myself, so it’s not surprising that you did what you did.” I turned around and grabbed my mortar before adding some of the powder I had made to the potion. Unsurprisingly, Professor Regan was handling the situation quite well and aside from the first two explosions, the class seemed to mostly go back to normal with people getting back to brewing their potions as the Professor took care of Mr. Lattimer and Miss Downing.
