As the Sorting Ceremony was explained, Ash couldn't help but feel uneasy. Sure, the Great Hall was large and magnificent, but she still felt lost. The candles were floating under the seemingly open ceiling, yet there was not one cold draft in the room. The students all sat along the long, wooden tables with chalices and golden plates in front of them. They were all smiling excitedly, however, Ash felt like she was being judged.

"They know you don't belong here," she thought. "They see it in your eyes."

The Sorting Hat began to sing its song and Ash began to zone out. What were these "houses" again? She was too overwhelmed to listen the first time. She turned her head to the four tables behind her and examined the banners hung above each section: blue and bronze, green and silver, scarlet and gold, and yellow and black. Ravenclaw. Slytherin. Gryffindor. Hufflepuff.

Back home, she barely knew how to fit in - the kids in her class were always too loud and immature for her. Now, she was going to be sorted into a house where she was sure she wouldn't be very popular.

Names began to follow, and each person would walk up to the single chair in the centre of the stage where the ratty old hat was placed on their heads. It would ponder for a short while for some kids, but had an immediate response for others. As if a hat that could think wasn't odd enough, it also seemed to understand the thoughts of others. Ash was in awe of the sight, and almost forgot that she was soon to be called.

"Rivers, Aisling." Boomed the voice calling students up to the stage.

She took a reluctant step forward as the people surrounding her stared. She had heard whispers on the train that Ravenclaws were know-it-alls and Slytherins were evil. Ash hoped this was not the case - she did have to go to school with these kids. She took another step. Why did she think this was a good idea?

Sitting down on the wooden chair, Ash felt terrified. Terrified of an old hat. How her old classmates would have laughed at her. Looking down at the crowd, she noticed that it was the opposite -everyone was shaking in anticipation and excitement. Then, the hat began to speak...

"You have a strong drive to succeed... Perhaps a Slytherin is in our midst?"

Ash shivered and struggled to take a deep breath, nerves beyond compare.

"But your mind begs to learn more, to know more... "

She finally caught her breath.

"With your wisdom and intellect, it best be... Ravenclaw!"

Ash quickly jumped off of the chair and timidly walked toward the Ravenclaw table, where se was greeted by her house. Although she believed this was the right fit, (after all, who could deny a talking hat?) Ash still felt apprehensive about how much she belonged here.

Aspen was still amazed by the beauty of the castle when the headmaster, Ackerly Blackburn stepped forwards to give them a speech. It was about the houses. Aspen hadn't really thought much about them, but now her nerves were returning. Which house would she be in? The headmaster then talked of a house cup, to which she smiled. The idea of a competition sounded fun. She hoped whichever house she was in would win in the end. Of course, that was a silly thing to hope for, since she didn't even have a house yet.
The headmaster then lead them down some stairs and eventually into a giant hall, with floating candles, a tall and arching ceiling, and four tables with so many people. If she was amazed before, she definitely appreciated the splendor and vastness of the interior. It was beautiful!
A voice started singing, snapping her back to reality to glance around. Finally, she spotted a battered, old pointed hat which looked to be more dirt than cloth. It was singing! Aspen could remember just a short while ago, when magic had been nothing but fairy tales and myth. She could barely believe her eyes. She focused on the song in time to hear a description of the houses. She didn't think she was particularly smart or cunning... No, she was definitely uncreative those ways. She could work hard though. Aspen would if she could fit in that way.
"Aue, Aspen," Aspen heard her name being called. Why does my last name start with 'A?' She thought, her heart beat increasing drastically. She made sure that her face was blank, before nervously stepping forward and sitting of the offered stool. The hat was plopped down over her eyes, and Aspen heard a voice in her head.
"Hhmmm... Why hello there... Where to place you?" "I'm not brave," she offered, thinking. "No certainly not, but more than you think. You value intelligence and friendship... Not very cunning though." "Hufflepuff? Please?" "Why yes, better make it..."
"Hufflepuff!"
Aspen stood to clapping from one of the tables, Hufflepuff, and walked over to it. All the faces smiling at her were so friendly, she let a small smile grace her her own face as she sat down.

Tammy was led to the Great Hall along with the other first years, her eyes went everywhere. She was amazed by practically everything, albeit knowing already on what to expect. Her parents had told her stories about Hogwarts, mostly from her father as he has the most adventure being in Gryffindor. Her mother on the other hand was a Ravenclaw, she'd tell her about the books she's read in the library or even the riddles she had to answer to get into the Ravenclaw common room, which she commented to be easy. Her brothers on the other hand, one was a Gryffindor and the other was a Slytherin.

Tammy giggled at the thought being sorted into Hufflepuff, all four houses would be in her family if she was. She almost bumped into the person right in front of her which she hurriedly apologized. "I-I-I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention." Tammy said quietly as the other student merely nodded with a smile before looking at the front. She mentally sighed, her nerves were catching up to her. She was almost drifting off to her own world when suddenly...

"Tammy Wilson."

Tammy went back to reality and looked at the front, hearing her name being called. She hurriedly went to the front and sat on the chair as the hat was being placed on her head. She wasn't even surprised when the hat started speaking, more like talking in her mind, as her parents had already told her about it.

"A Wilson... Yes... I've sorted your older brothers before, and your parents before them. Quite an interesting family..."

"That's what everyone usually says." Tammy said, in her mind.

"Hmm... Yes, you are indeed knowledgeable and witty like your mother, brave and chivalrous like your father... A tough one..."

"But I sense loyalty and hard-work in you, yes. Your kindness and honesty shows no bounds, better be..."

"Hufflepuff!"

Tammy's eyes went to the Hufflepuff table that went into cheers and applauds. The hat was taken from her head and she went to the Hufflepuff table where the students, older and new, welcomed her with friendly smiles and greetings.

Sean was deeply excited about the sorting ceremony. After getting a letter, he thought it was a joke - but it wasn't. When he walked into the room with all the other first-years, he saw the Headmaster. The Headmaster greeted them all. He called the Deputy Headmaster and they explained to us that we are going to be sorted in one of four houses. We entered the Great Hall, being greeted with so many interested eyes of upper-years watching us. It was hard to believe it actually happened.
The Sorting Hat started singing it's song. When it was over, the Deputy Headmaster started calling us by names. Sean thought: "Where do I belong in the four houses?". He didn't know anything about them, he heard about them only in the hat's song. Immediately, he thought of being in Hufflepuff either Gryffindor - that being said, the time he stood up for the 1st graders back in muggle-school, fighting three of 7th grades, with weird magical abilities with him, he was pretty brave. Suddenly, the Deputy Headmaster called: "Sean Calagann". Sean quickly started getting his way in the crowd, saying sorry to everyone he accidentally put his foot on, or basically passed by. He climbed up to the Sorting Hat, and the Deputy Headmaster put it on his head. Suddenly, he heard in his head: "This one's easy to see". After that, a loud voice screamed: "GRYFFINDOR!"
One of the tables started loudly screaming, as Sean went down the stairs to join them. Gryffindor - the house of those, who are brave and are ready to stand up for someone - this is his new home.

Mandy anxiously bit her lip as she made her way into the Great Hall along with her fellow first years, all ready to be sorted. Her mother had told her how her Sorting Ceremony had gone many years ago, but it still had not calmed down her nerves. She was determined to get into the house her great grandmother had been in, the noble house of Ravenclaw. The house where with beyond measure is a man’s greatest pleasure. And she had lived by that phrase ever since she first heard it. Her own great grandmother had showed Mandy her old robes and even let her read some of her old schoolbooks she had kept. And Mandy had been mesmerised by all the knowledge and hungry for more.

Professor Blackburn had led the first years into the Great Hall and returned to his sit, in the front while the Deputy Headmaster explained to the first years how they would proceed. Once it was done, The Sorting Hat, which had been sitting on the small stool, started moving and singing:

The Sorting Hat then sang his song :

" A thousand years or more ago
When I was newly sewn,
There lived four wizards of
Whose names are still well known:

Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.

For were their such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor.
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

United by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.

Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones, they had to teach.

While still alive they did divide
Their favorites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When were they dead and gone?

Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!

Now slip me snug about your ears,
I've never yet been wrong,
I'll have a look inside your mind
And tell where you belong!

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've got a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends. "

Once the Sorting Hat was done, everyone in the room applauded him before the silence slowly returned in the location. The Deputy Headmaster started reciting each name on the list, Mandy getting more excited as the last names came to the P of the alphabet, and she knew it was soon her turn.
“Panders, Mandy.” The Deputy Headmaster called, and Mandy’s feet turned cold. This was it! She slowly made her way towards the stool as she sat down. The Deputy Headmaster gently placed the Sorting hat on top of her head and took a step back. “Hmm, clever little thing you are. Ambitious, yes. Loyal too. Which is a great thing to have as a Hufflepuff.” The sorting hat started to whisper in her ear it seemed. Mandy bit her lip and impatiently waited for the Sorting Hat’s verdict “But your hunger for knowledge seems to surpass it all, yes quite difficult. But I think you should be…

RAVENCLAW!”

The Ravenclaw table applauded loudly as Mandy made her way towards the table. She had done it! And she could not wait until she could write her great grandmother about her achievement. And her parents ofcourse! But mostly, she could not wait for this adventure to begin!

The Sorting Hat stopped to sing and one by one students were called, to receive their house.
During this time Artus Villiers started to gaze upon the Great Hall. It was as his parents and teachers told him...astounding! However he wasen't really impressed by the Great Halls size or appearance, rather was it the sheer amount of people siting in it that impressed Artus.

"Gryffindor!"

came from the front. Yet another student walked towards the others siting in the Great Hall. Judging by that students face he was really happy. Seeing that Artus wondered what house he would be put in. Until now he didn't really think about that. He wanted to get along with normal people, so Gryffindor might be the best choice. Looking at the student once more, he saw that he was welcomed by the other Gryffindors and he quickly found some people to talk to.

"Ravenclaw!"

disrupted his thoughts. Ravenclaw...the house of the most intelligent Wizards. Maybe he would fit in there, after all, he knew quiet a lot already. Aside from that his ambition of becoming a well-known Wizard, might have the best chance of success in this house. Ravenclaw or Gryffindor it was a really hard choice to make.

"Hufflepuff!"

Once more came the voice of the Sorting Hat from the front, however Artus was barely noticing it. Thinking about the four houses was more important to him now. Still though, he noticed Hufflepuff and be it barely. So his thoughts circled around it aswell. Many of his ancestors came out of Hufflepuff, it was like...70... or was it 80%? He couldn't quite remember.

"Artus Villiers!"

Normally this call should have stopped his thoughts altogether, but not now. He heard his name and walked towards the Hat. Unlike former students, his exitment was rather none existent, as he focused on his thoughts more and more. That was supposed to change once he sat on the stool and had the Sorting Hat on his head. "Well well...it seems like you can't even concentrate now." came from the Hat, who quickly continued. "Becoming a great Wizard, what a simpleminded goal...maybe Ravenclaw?" Hearing his thoughts coming from the mouth of a hat was more than confusing, however it had an effect on Artus, as he was focusing on the Hat now. "Having friends and living casually. The courage to step up for those you care about...maybe Gryffindor?" And yet again a perfect reflection of his thoughts continued to confuse him. "A noble lineage...responsibilities and expectations. You can't deny that you want to fulfill them...maybe Hufflepuff?" The first few times the Hat confused Artus but now he was rather certain. He didn't care about the house he would life in, because he will fulfill his ambitions. "I see...ambitious and yet divided. It seems like your doubt vanished hmmm?" Artus didn't even notice what the Hat whispered, instead he started to observe the Great Hall once more. All the students looked at him...after all his verdict was yet to come, despite the long time he was at the stool already. He felt uncomfortable now that he realized all those looks. "I guess i should pick your house then. I think...yes how about..."

"SLYTHERIN!"

Artus wasen't sure if he understood it right. Slytherin...of all four houses Slytherin? Following that he looked at the table of Slytherin and indeed, many of the students were applauding. Being certain now Artus put the Hat back and walked towards his table, whilst having a happy expression for once. During this short way he mumbled something so quiet that no one could hear it. "What a stupid Hat...well at least he has a sense for irony and to be fair I can't say he is wrong."

From now on Artus Villiers first year began, destined to be exiting.

Thoose who see the question won't see the answer.

✣ The Sorting ✣

As Dinara took her first steps into the Great Hall, her eyes glazed over in sheer amazement. Now, it was no easy feat to get the talkative lass to keep silent, yet the floating candles and the platters of delicacies laid out in front of her were no ordinary sights. Of course, the sheer number of people in the hall would be intimidating to most, even to the social butterfly herself; though this was something that Dinara would never admit.

She had barely found her place in line before a man started to speak, his voice confident and unwavering. Dinara listened attentively -- a rare occasion in itself -- absorbing every word the Headmaster said. She gazed up at the many students in line with her, and suddenly felt rather small. Not just physically; Dinara suddenly felt rather insignificant amongst the many other students who had made it here.

She barely had any time to ponder on her feelings before the line started to move again. Dinara was forced to scuffle along and to avoid tripping on her overly-large robes as she attempted to keep up with the speed of the students in front. Though she stumbled a few times, Dinara somehow managed to keep up with the unexpectedly quick speed at which the First Years travelled at. The eyes that trailed them made her feel the teeniest bit uncomfortable, but her resolve held firm and she refused to look down as she walked.

Eventually, they came to a stop. Dinara couldn't really see what was going on, but a sudden melody caught her attention and she looked around, trying to find the source of the music. It was then she realised -- It wasn't a person singing, it was a hat! Trying to hide her astonishment, Dinara forced herself to pay attention to the hat's lyrics.

She eventually gathered that there were four different houses that she could possibly be sorted into: 'the brave at heart', 'the just and loyal, 'those of wit and learning' and 'the cunning folks'. Dinara wasn't quite sure how to feel and which house she'd prefer to be in, though she quite liked the idea of having a mix of friends from all the different houses. The song ended almost as soon as it started, and the queue started to move as the students began to be sorted by the hat.

As far as Dinara could tell, it seemed to be a random process. The hat is placed on the student, and within a matter of minutes, shouts out a house name which is met by thunderous applause by the corresponding house tables. Before she knew it, it was her turn. Dinara bit her lip as the hat was placed on her head; a small ripple of giggling was heard as the hat slid right over her whole face and had to be adjusted before anything actually happened.

Dinara almost fell over the stool in shock as the same voice which sang seemed to speak directly into her head -- The process wasn't random afterall! What more could she have expected from a school of witchcraft and wizardry? The Hat continued to mutter something about her being suitable for a few houses, yet ultimately deciding that it's the values that a person holds dear to their heart that truly makes them who they are. After a few moments of deliberation, the Hat let out a deafening yell: "HUFFLEPUFF!"

Dinara scrambled off the small stool, bowed to the hat and the Headmaster, before heading off to join the table which vaguely resembled a hive of bees -- the striking yellow proved to be a stark contrast to the dark colour of the school robes.

Lydia had spent every waking moment of her life thinking of this momentous occasion. As the doors to the Great Hall open she feels her mouth drop open. Her father had described the infamous hall to her many times but his words didn't even touch upon the beauty of the place. Each step she took her eyes darted about the things to see. Each painting that hung on the wall. The candles floating above her head contrasting against the night sky. The seemingly four endless tables. Finally her feet came to a stop with the rest of her year.

One by one each student went and was sorted. Anxiously she patiently waited. Then her name was called. "Lydia Chambers." Taking a deep breath she stepped forward and cautiously sat down. This is it. I wish dad could be here right now. No matter what house I'll make the best of it. She thought to herself as the sorting hat was placed on her head. Once it came alive she felt her heart stop, it's words echoing in her mind. "Ahh...another with so much potential in each house. Loyal, intelligent, brave, cunning. Where to put this fiery one...a hard choice this is...HUFFLEPUFF!" The hat was lifted off of her head and her heart started beating once again. A smile was painted across her pale face and she practically ran to the Hufflepuff table. The cheers from the table made her feel very confident as she shook many peoples hands. I can't wait to send an owl to dad. She thought as she watched the rest of the sorting ceremony.

Phoebe McCrary sat silently in her seat as she listened in on everyone else's conversations. Her eyes, however, were fixed on only one thing: the sorting hat. The sorting hat was going to determine where she would be for her full seven years at Hogwarts. The sorting hat would determine who she would be surrounded by.

Upon hearing her name being called, she quietly stood and made her way to the sorting hat, attempting not to trip on the impossibly lengthy robe she adorned. In the back of her mind, she wondered if the person who gave her the robe took incorrect measurements. Taking a seat, she began to flush at the sight of everyone's eyes. Tightening her grip slightly on the arms of the chair, she felt her heartbeat escalate as the hat was placed on her head.

Despite her embarrassment and shame, she kept her head high. All of these years of isolation from people her age would not allow her to make a bad first impression. Closing her eyes and taking a breath to calm her nerves, she opened her eyes as she heard the name of her house being belted out from the ornament on her head: Slytherin.

Slytherin?

She quickly stood up, eyes wide and lips parted slightly in surprise as the other students cheered for her. Slytherin in particular seemed to be the most obnoxiously noisy. She took off the sorting hat and gently sat it on the chair.

Quickly making her way to the Slytherin table, she lowered her gaze to the floor as she tried much harder than before to not trip. Taking a seat furthest away from her peers, she messed with her hands nervously, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She was not bitter or scared because of her house placement, merely surprised since she knew of Slytherin's reputation.

She was silent for the rest of the evening.

Koko Riddle sat somewhat nervously, and somewhat attentively as she watched all of the first years get sorted. Her last name started with an “R”, so she would likely have a long wait. Too bad she she had decided against bringing her book; she wasn’t too keen on making friends. Mostly because Rosalie wouldn’t let her. Not that she really cared, though. She was used to having enemies, her stepmother being one of them.

She had a slightly taller than average figure, slim with little muscle. Her stepmother hardly let her outside, afraid she would show her magic, though her stepbrothers were allowed out all the time though they were pureblood wizards. Her light brown hair was tied back in a low bun for the occasion, and her hazel eyes glittered with... fright? No. Cunning? Maybe. Ambition? Most likely. She didn’t know what house she would get, but it wouldn’t be Hufflepuff. She was too mean for that.

Koko has struck up a few conversations with other first years, but only the ones that seemed about to break from being away from their parents. Koko didn’t really care. She liked her stepfather, Victor Wreath, but that was it. Otherwise she couldn’t wait to get away from home.

Koko ran a few lines of one of her favorite songs through her head. The hat was on O’s now, she had a few minutes to go. So far, there were a bunch of Gryffindors, but Koko hadn’t paid much attention. She eyed the patchy grey hat carefully, looking for details about how the hat might have been able to read minds. Probably an enchantment, she thought. Or maybe it’s something like what I can do. Koko had always had a knack for sensing and manipulating thoughts and emotions, and that was another reason why Rosalie had hated her. She still did, though she was grateful, just a little.

“Riddle, Koko!” The hat boomed, startling the pondering girl. She bolted upright and ran towards the chair the hat rested on, a few teachers scolding her on the way. Not that she really cared; she didn’t. She set the pointed hat on her head, and sat, clearing her mind of any impurities so she seemed perfect. The hat laughed. “Is this child trying to trick me?” It wondered aloud.

Koko couldn’t help but crack a smile. She hadn’t been trying to trick him, if it was a him, but she could see how it might come across like that. “A Riddle...” the hat mused. Koko almost knew it now, it was just inside her head. “A pureblood lineage of Ravenclaws, Gryffindors, And Slytherins. Mistreated by an adoptive mother yet always knows how to get out of it...” the hat paused for a quiet moment, then it resumed,. “And cunning. A trick like that, even without realizing it? Well then, there’s only one house right for her... she ought to be sorted into...

SLYTHERIN!!!
