“Hm, a perfect evening for revising” Damian thought, approaching the study room and looking for a free seat where he could stay and study until it was time for dinner. He had a small leather bag with him containing a couple of books and some maniacally ordered pages of notes taken during the lessons, typical of him; apparently, he couldn’t function without following exactly his method for studying.

The original plan was to find a spot without other students: he knew many people study in groups, but he never did that and preferred to continue alone and leave the socializing for other times. While scanning for a seat, his gaze stumbled upon someone who seemed to have been struggling with something, and caught Damian’s attention. Normally, he would have ignored anyone and sat somewhere else, but he thought it might have been interesting to see what was going on.

He moved some swift and rather silent steps in that direction to see what was written in the papers, what was causing so much trouble to have caught his attention. “Having trouble with that?” he asked unprompted, standing behind the red-haired student that apparently was still studying. “Maybe you should copy that on another piece of paper, it looks quite messy.” he added and sticked his eyes on the words written on the paper.

He then proceeded to take the seat in front of the other student, and sat there; he got all the material he needed for his study session out of the bag and placed it on the table, making sure he didn’t accidentally wrinkle his notes in the transport, and started browsing through them.

Damian was still browsing through his notes and selecting the papers he intended to revise, minding his own business. He intended to proceed with his original plan and study in silence, giving Willow some sort of smile as an answer for the thanks received. He moved his eyes on his material and began to read the first lines in silence until Willow talked again.

“Damian, also first year Gryffindor.” he replied briefly, keeping his eyes on the paper at first. He struggled a bit with reading even when he was most focused, he wanted to revise at least one topic before dinner, and that meant he didn’t really have time for chit chatting. “It’s all about the method. If you follow a specific method rigorously you will find it easier.” he continued, and raised his eyes to meet Willow’s.

When they went back to writing, Damian thought that the interaction was over and returned to his notes, reading for a bit before hearing new words. “Yes, I wanted to revise History of Magic, I found it fascinating but all these dates are confusing me. Luckily I had studied these topics at home too.” he replied and took a new piece of paper, a quill and a bottle of ink. He started transcribing some dates and events in an elegant and clean handwriting, and continued to do so for a bit. “And you are studying Charms, correct?” he asked, even if he was almost sure of the answer.

“Well... yes. Even a slightly different movement can have unexpected results on the charm you are casting and same goes with the pronunciation. You have to be sure you won’t make any mistake before trying to cast it.” he explained and continued with his transcribing. He was at a good point now, almost done with what he was writing. “But it’s not that difficult, really. You just have to pay more attention.” he added after finishing the page.

He waited for the ink to fully dry before placing the piece of paper on top of all the other notes he had written through the weeks, being extra careful not to smudge any leftover ink that might not have dried out yet. He surely didn’t want to ruin his perfect pages after all the work and time spent on them. Lastly, he raised the gaze to Willow’s face when he heard their words.

“Uh... yeah, sure. But don’t you know anyone in your dorm? Or you could also join a club to meet new people. The amount of students in Hogwarts is enormous, it’s impossible to not know anyone.” he said and looked at all the other students in the study room. He had already met many people here and there, but always preferred to study alone and keep the friendships for freetime.

Damian thought it was weird that they still hadn’t talked with many other people. Sure, they looked a bit shy and not particularly talkative, but there were many occasions to meet other students, both in class and outside. And considering that they were all living there, everyone had to get some friends, at some point. But maybe he was thinking all of that because under the perfect, gifted child shell there was a really extroverted person, who liked very much to stay among people.

“Hm, my favourite colour? Probably green. Favourite food, omelette. I don’t have any pets either. As for languages, I can speak French.” he answered all the questions casually, not thinking much about those and giving more attention to what he was doing: he took all the notes he had and put them back in his leather bag, again making sure they didn’t wrinkle in the movement. Was he done? Not really, he wanted to revise a bit more on a book, he was physically incapable of saying “stop” to studying.

“Japanese, you said? Yes, it can be useful. Do you like it? Because I don’t like French. At all, to be honest.” he asked without taking his eyes off his book. Making small talk wasn’t Damian’s favourite activity, but it surely was better for studying than indulging in heavier topics.
