Birthday Best Friend Sadness
Kendra Yanagi no ki, when people hear that name they think of a girl with energy. they think of a girl who talks so much.
but for the past week. Kendra has been quiet. it's been growing closer and closer to her birthday February 28th. But Kendra didn't feel like her normal self. she had been getting homesick. missing her poor Aunt Hinata. and her mother Kagome as well. She missed them. it was making her feel sad.
Kendra sighed, after finishing her classes for today she headed to the astronomy tower to look at the stars. Kendra's mother used to show the stars to Kendra all the time, making up funny constellations that weren't real. Like the unicorn with a mustache etc etc.. her life had gotten progressively easier being here. She had realized that it wasn't going to always be like this for her.
Kendra sat down somewhere with a book she had borrowed from the library. reading in comfort under the stars. she enjoyed the company of just the night sky.
After a while Kendra started humming a small tune. progressively getting louder, then going to soft singing. her humming echoed through the hallways. the song was a lullaby her mother sang to her when she was little. it made her homesick but she enjoyed the tune. Kendra had made friends while being here.
But Kendra didn't have a set on Best friend. She wanted a friend where they could go on adventures, where they could sit in silence for hours and be comfortable. where they could talk about anything and everything. a small tear streaked down from her cheek. True Kendra had friends...
But she was still missing a best friend..

Birthday Best Friend Sadness
Oliver climbed up the stairs to the Astronomy tower, books in his arms. He held them close to his chest, anxious to drop anything. Thoughts went through his head a mile an hour; mainly about losing his books and failing his studies. Of course, he didn't have to go up to the Astronomy tower, he just wanted to keep tabs of the stars. He found them quite comforting, to look up and know that they were always going to be there. He carefully placed his books down next to the telescope, opening one by a name he didn't look at right away. He looked up at the night sky, trying to name a few constellations. He could point out the big dipper, the beginner's stars. Oliver looked in the telescope, observing a few other constellations. After a bit of looking, he found Leo the Lion, his favorite. Taking his quill and paper from his bag, he began writing on the piece of paper, copying a paragraph from the book. Oliver found it a bit tedious to write with the girl singing behind him. He took a few seconds of just staring at his paper before he turned around.
"What song is that?" He asked, attempting niceties that his maids would've encouraged back at the mansion. He could still hear a tinge of annoyance in his voice, but hoped she wouldn't notice. After all; if he was going to be at Hogwarts for the next seven or so years, he didn't want to be a total token Slytherin.

Kendra had been singing as quiet as she could with her naturally loud voice. she understood others were going to be here. she couldn't help it.
Kendra had hear a quiet yet firm voice behind her ask. She jumped, startling herself and dropping the book she was reading. Kendra sense a tiny bit of annoyance. She flinched slightly. Then turning around slowly with a neutral expression. she responded with what her voice had been for the past wee. stuttery and shy. which was unlike her usual shrill happy loud voice about to burst from excitement.
"O-Oh! S-Sorry, it's ah...An old lullabye my mother sang to me.."
Her voice quiet and breathy. Kendra couldn't sense why the boy had been annoyed but she guessed it was disturbing his reading. She looked down at the constellation that the telescope had stayed at.
"I-Is that Leo the Lion? T-The constellation? T-That one is pretty..."
She looked down, Kendra mumbled a quick apology for being nosy. it was sadly her nature. Kendra cupped her hands and slouched, a natural introverts position i guess. but Kendra wasn't an introvert.
Kendra spoke her next words soft, being muffled by small strand of hair in the way
"S-So what's your name? A-And what house are you in? S-Sorry if i ask too many questions.."

Oliver stayed silent for a second, before sighing. He set his quill down, closing his books slowly. He didn't expect the girl to reply, he was just trying to be nicer then he usually was. Very well, he had read up with Innis about proper etiquette anyways.
"Well, that's nice." He said curtly. He hadn't known many lullabyes, his father addressing them as childish. He wondered if his mother would have sung him lullabyes, but he pushed those thoughts away. Father encouraged strength.
"Yeah, that's Leo the Lion. It's my favorite constellation." Oliver nodded, looking at the girl again. He decided against saying anything quite important; he liked to keep to himself.
"My name is Oliver. Oliver Jones. I'm a first-year Slytherin." Oliver said simply. He didn't really understand why this girl wanted to know this. In fact, he was holding back snide remarks, but he kept his mouth shut. He decided that he'd be getting little to no work done now, so he carefully stacked the book sand rolled the scroll and quill into his bag.
"And you're quite altight. I expected no less from coming into a quiet tower to do work. What's your name again?" He let a lace of sarcasm drip in his voice.
Oliver pulled his bag over his shoulder, taking a seat near his schoolmate.
"How's Hogwarts treating you?"
Merlin, if Innis saw him right now, she'd be proud. Him? Talking to a person without mentioning a zit or other uncomplimentary features? Unheard of. Perhaps he had some Hufflepuff in him, after all.

Kendra was told to stay away from Slytherin, they were Rude and distasteful. But she wondered if it was just a stereotype. After all Kendra was defying Ravenclaw Stereotypes by being average and not studying often. and being a extrovert. her mind had wondered around thinking about other things and listening to the other.
She could sense the sarcasm. it made her flinch, What was his problem. Naturally she would run away from negative people but her instincts told her he was something more on the inside.
"M-My name is Kendra...Kendra Yanagi no ki, they just use Yanagi though.."
Her voice shaking, trembling. cupping her hand and fidgeting.
what was Kendra nervous about? she realized her speaking partner asked another question.
"O-Oh..Hogwarts is nice...Everyone is nice...But no one really talks to me that much..i-i guess..."
Kendra looked down. scratching her ear. it wasn't in her nature to say things or act like this. But this boy she had met made her feel. as if she was inferior. He barely knew her and she already felt intimidated. Maybe it was because everyone told her to stay away from Slytherin.
She mumbled a quick apology, glancing up at him quickly. then looking down. Flinching.
She knew he was annoyed with her. Kendra couldn't help it.

Innis walked in, and looked around. She felt her nervousness bubble up again, and she sucked in a big breath. She sat down, and started to scribble down notes on a notebook. She then opened a book, and flipped through the pages, finger trailing along each line. After a moment, she came to reality and spotted Oliver.
"Hey! When'd you get here? I don't think I noticed you," Innis said, and dog eared the page she was reading, then closed it.

Innis brushed her hair back, braiding it in a quick fashion, then clipping it to the side of her head. She glanced at the walls, and every person in the room. Her gaze trailed off, then finally landed back on Oliver. "Aren't you nervous? Everyone seemed ok in the dormitories, but no one really talked to me. I guess that's fine, though," She dipped her quill tip in ink. "But I do wish I would of gotten Ravenclaw. A riddle everyday gets your brain working."
Innis tightened her robe around herself, and took a deep breath. Whenever she's nervous, she talks like a motor engine, till she feels relieved. This time, that didn't seem to be helping. This wasn't a normal test, this was Hogwarts.

Oliver rose a brow. He could admit he was doing less than average at this talking thing. He could do better, he told himself. Fiddling with his hands, he cleared his throat. He had no idea how to talk to Yanagi without sounding rude, where was his father to educate him? He settled on his comfort topic; stars.
"Another good one is the North Star. Carries lots of weight for sailors and travelers. Funny how so many stars that may already be dead holds so much power over so many cultures." He turned to Innis.
"Hey, Innis."
Oliver gave a curt nod to his best friend. He didn't quite feel anxious, rather excited and worried about failing studies like Defense Against The Dark Arts.
"Father cut me off so I could learn how to be a true wizard, total frog bile, but it made me pretty late for school. I knew I'd get Slytherin, though."
Oliver grinned toothily, leaning over to the two and looking at Innis.
"I'm a full Slytherin. I doubt you'll find your true inner Slytherin." He joked, which seemed less like one to anyone but the two. He grabbed his bags, placing them against the wall.
"Now I certainly won't get any studying in. No matter, I wanted to fail."
Nevertheless, Oliver looked back at the stars, still addressing the girls without looking at them or their faces at all.
"This is Yanagi." Oliver gestured to the girl. "Innis, there's food between your teeth."

Innis frowned, glaring daggers at Oliver. Self-consciously, she picked between her teeth till she thought she got it. "Humph," She said sharply. "At this point, you might be lower than Gryffindor."
She started scribbling down more things as she read through "Hogwarts, a History". "But, if you finally do decide to at least try, then I'll help you in the common room. From what I'm reading so far.." Innis flipped a page. "Everything seems so easy, yet interesting." She took a deep breath, and leaned back in her seat. "But I guess you wouldn't feel the achievement of winning," Innis teased. "Seeing as I beat you in the spelling bee. How mad you were!"
She then just went completely silent, re-reading a paragraph. She copied it down, her quill flying over the page. "I'm awfully excited for potions and herbology, though. I've flipped through the books, and all I can say is that I want to make potions." She was now done explaining everything, which Oliver probably wasn't listening to.
"Oh-- sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you.. Yanagi, was it? I can call you that, correct?" Innis looked over to the other girl. She leaned forward, and whispered, "Oliver's being nice to you, isn't he? He can be incredibly rude."

Kendra looked down at the 2 wizards conversing, she sighed. Kendra knew they were best friends. She was lonely and needed a best friend as well but no one was really willing to stay near her.
Kendra cupped her hands. fidgeting and slouching.
"I-I guess..I can sense the annoyance when he talks to me though"
Kendra whispered back to the other girl. grinning gently. it was true she could.
Kendra couldn't tell why she felt so inferior to the other wizards. she guessed it was because she was taught that all slytherins were rude and uptight. She couldn't think that way! Kendra is not a girl to base people on stereotypes. yet here she was literally being a Ravenclaw stereotype. Quiet, introverted, respectful, nerdy. that was her!
Normally Kendra would be yelling and bursting around the room and talking people's ears off.
she had been out of her zone.
"I love the Orin constellation. In other cultures his constellation is portrayed as a drum. that's cool.."
Her voice trailed off as she sense the boy not really listening, she slouched down. showing her instinctual beta state. Kendra couldn't help it. she felt like she was being judgmental by being quiet in front of 2 other wizards.

Oliver frowned.
"Don't ever consider me as one of those blubbering idiots. They think they're so amazing because they have a few hero's that were one of them. And then, Slytherins are considered the bad guys!"
Oliver ranted, huffing.
"Anyways, I still have zero sputtering ideas on where half my classes are, but I'll just follow you everywhere." He shrugged, eyes continuing to be glued at the stars. He listened as the two girls whispered, annoying him quite a bit. "What in Merlin are you two talking about? I know you're not gossiping." However, he dismissed the question quickly to observe the stars.
"Let's see." He began to mentally point out stars, "There!" He pointed to a constellation. "There's Orion, The Hunter. Brightest star, Rigel. Seven main stars." He listed off, before curling his nose. "Merlin, Innis, I sound like you. Anyways, Orion's an original one." He said simply. He grabbed his book again, flipping to a page and showing Yanagi. "Here's a picture of it, this is taken with a magically enhanced and expensive telescope. What I'd give for one of those!" Oliver's voice faltered as he finished, noticing his fault in composure. He had raised his voice too loud, something so little even his maids would've frowned at. Astronomy was a big thing for him, it was one of the few things other then arts and Aurors that made him excited, which he also considered a weakness. "Anyways, yeah, Orion's cool." Oliver nodded, shrugging.
