The next race was chaotic. Traps were the theme and it didn't look promising for Donald's lazy, dumb Gnome. The crowd was excited at the prospect of some shattered gnomes and they'd not be disappointed. Donald's little creation exploded into a thousand splinters after hard failing an obvious trap. Rather than a shriek or cry of any type, a simple sigh escaped from Donald and he sat down to watch the rest of the mayhem.

"And the race begins! And... oh my! Destruction already!" was all the announcer had to say that Donald cared to hear. It went on, as did many other Gnomes.

"Looks like a lot of damage out there, folks. I'ved already seen a little gnome arm go flying out of the course! Watch yourselves out there, spectators! Mr Burty Fizzingbuns is unstoppable though, watch that little guy."

It was true, that one Gnome, and no others, had managed to scoot, dodge, duck, and dive through every trap without missing a beat. It reached the end and scored an amazing, unimpeded time of 100 seconds. It was a crowd favorite as many began to cheer for that perfect run.

Meanwhile, a cacophony of shattering parts followed behind as about a third of the gnome population was smashed by various traps.

"Ouch! I just saw Gnedork get slapped between two concrete slabs. Nothing left but dust there! And look over there, Willow has been impaled by a literal mouse trap! Oh the gnomanity! 8 gnomes have been squashed. Nothing a good reparo won't fix, I'm sure! But sad to watch."

Time passes and the next race begins!

Calming Presence in Effect

Piérre pumped his fists as he watched his little gnome brave every adversity that was thrown its way. Once or twice poor Tiddlywink did find himself in a fix, against those nasty mental puzzles that Romeo would have loved to solve Piérre bet, but otherwise the gnome reached the end relatively unscathed and with a friend to boot. Whooping wildly and waving back and forth on Romeo's shoulders, the kid couldn't help but let out a small cry of pride for his beloved creation. "WAHOO! I told you he could do it, Romeo! Didn't I?! Didn't I?!" The excited boy couldn't seem to be calmed. "Ha-ha-haha-ha!" He mocked down at his brother.

But hey, leave it to Romeo to be the wet towel, huh? This had been a piece of cake! Tiddlywink was the best little creation that he had ever made! And Tiddlywink was going to continue being a perfect storm and take out all the rest of the competition, no matter how hard the maze was going to be!

Rushing over to the victorious gnome, Piérre hugged it close and gave it a kiss on the tophat before bringing it back to Romeo as he tried to make things stick back where they were supposed to be. "He's ready, I think." Piérre said confidently, turning the creation in his hands. Yeah, he wasn't totally falling apart. He would be good enough to race, surely.

Romeo took the machination from Piérre and recited a quick incantation to mend it before handing it back. Quicker than a rabbit, Piérre set it up at the starting line of the maze race. "Now, little guy, you gotta beat everyone here. I don't care if you aren't really good at navigation or coordination; you've got Piérre-luck, got it? Use it wisely, young one." With a final pat on the head, he returned back to his brother and regained his seating, putting both elbows on the top of Romeo's head as he waited most impatiently for the games to begin.

Well consider me surprised, but despite the horrors of the traps springing all around the gnomes participating our little creation had somehow found the right way to give almost every single one the slip. Only on two did it not seem to realize that there was danger inbound, and it was only with those two the it seemed to have any difficulties. Battered and a bit staggering, it still managed to cross the finish line tied with another mechagnome, winning for itself a tidy second place that seemed to similarly launch it up and into the top three of all matches.

Obvously Piérre had to make a show of it, like he always does.

"Alright, alright! Gemellino little twin! We get it!" I swatted at him overhead, trying to get him to stop wobbling back and forth on my shoulders. I was strong, sure, but I wasn't He-man and if I came crashing down he would too. Granted, it would have been minutely funny, but I certainly didn't want to run the risk of taking myself out before Durmstrang contended against Team Hufflepuff at the end of this month. "You got a lucky break! This doesn't prove anything." I mumbled mostly to myself as I helped Piérre get down again so that he could fix the little guy.

Taking him aside, I pulled out my own wand. "One moment, one moment. Here, let me try. Reparo." With ease, the little metal bits began to stitch themselves together again and coalesce back into a recognizably functional form. the poor fella had taken a brusing, but it wasn't something a little repairing spell couldn't fix.

One of the few things that a repairing spell could fix, actually.

"I think that should be enough for the time being..." I turned the gnome to inspect it on all sides before handing it down and back to my brother. "Now don't go choking on pride just yet, bucko. This thing has really bad coordination. It'll be a blue moon tonight if that thing can get through the maze, even if it does look unassuming." Rolling my eyes through his complaints, I finally waved a hand just to get him to go and set the thing up already. "Go on, get it moving."

Just as he had before, Piérre continued to gussy the thing up for a few more seconds before finally reluctantly letting it go and returning to me. "Alright. Upsie-daisy." I grunt for a moment as I get Piérre back up in his "booster seat". With a deep sigh, I resigned myself to watching the race commence.

Well... as good as round 2 had gone for her little Gnome Matter What, round 3 had gone equally terrible. So... so terrible. These races were certainly the kind where one could be on top one minute and in 11th place the next.

Gnome Matter What had started off the harrowing race rather amicably, sailing through the first two traps, but that luck had run out horribly quickly. The little racer had stumbled and just could not get his footing back.

EmmaLee's hands flew to her face to cover her eyes as her precious creation fell to one trap, and then another, and then another. Five straight failures until her poor little gnome could move no longer.

"Oh no!" EmmaLee cried, rushing to the sidelines near where her gnome lay. Her distress about her own gnome was momentarily abated as she saw the Stephen's Gnome N. Clature did manage to make it across the finish line by the hair on his purple pirate-y chin.

EmmaLee lower lip wobbled as other gnomes in the race either fell to the terrible traps or crossed the finish line in various states of injury. She felt a little silly, admittedly, caring so much for charmed objects, but they were all so cute with so much personality. She couldn't help it. They felt alive to her.

Once the moderators went through repairing all the fallen and injured gnomes and the raceway was cleaned up, EmmaLee rushed to scoop Gnome Matter What up and carry him protectively to the sidelines. Gnome Matter what seemed to pout in her arms, as if he knew that he had not finished the race and was disappointed in himself.

As the next race was set up, EmmaLee clung to her despondent child of sorts and when the time came, she was extremely reluctant to place him at yet another possibly dangerous starting line. The tiny maze brought EmmaLee's mind back to the ferocious foliage that had manifested at the Spring Ball and if not for Gnome Matter What's fierce determination to do what he had been created to do, she would have held on to him and ended his racing days right there.

That being said, the moment the maze what complete, Gnome Matter What struggled out of EmmaLee's arms and ran purposefully to the new starting line, giving her no choice in the matter of keeping him from his race. EmmaLee giggled a little as her gnome gestured to his pirate friend and made an urgent "come on!" kind of noise as he headed for the starting line. It seemed the little gnome had had a taste for victory and was determined to regain his standing, encouraging his friend, who had at least claimed the 10th spot needed for the last race, to do the same.

EmmaLee clutched her parasol in both hands and chewed her lip slightly in worry, but all the same, once the race had started and the gnomes were on their way through the maze, she cheered as loudly for both of their gnomes as she had the previous 3 rounds. As determined as her little gnome was to win, she was determined to support him through her, admittedly irrational considering how easily he was repaired, worry.

In the third race, Sir Fickely Puffilysnot Jr. made it to second place and 4th on the leaderboard, only being 0.66 points away from taking third. Nonetheless, Ara was proud of the gnome and gave him a head pat once he was fixed up. She brought the little guy for a little pep talk. "You did great Sir! You're now 4th on the leaderboard. Wanna make it higher?" she encouraged and Sir Puffilysnot nodded in determination.

Sir Puffilysnot headed to the starting line without Ara's help once he was set down. The girl was amused that he had come so far. She recalled the races that were already done, 'Speedway, Bookshelf Boulevard, Mousetrap Mayhem, and now it's Mini Maze Mayhem. So that means ... 1 more race left until the finale' she thought.

Ara saw some of the fellow competitors who were saying good luck to their gnomes. She hoped that no one would lose horribly this round. The girl also hoped for no sore losers and that this would just be as fun as it was in the first race. As the race started, she just watched her gnome with a slight smile while waiting for him to cross the finish line.

She had been right about the challenge part. A whole thing about traps would not do well, especially when she didn't think that Sir Roy was smart enough to really tell the difference between walking on a normal path and walking onto a trap. Not that Kit was much better at noticing those things, but she watched from the sideline with bated breath as the race started.

It would not look good, but at least she wasn't alone in the struggle and destruction. Perhaps Yorick noticed how other gnomes weren't doing so well and getting destroyed, distracted as he walked right into a trap, losing his cap/top part of his head in the process. It was a really good thing Yorick could just get repaired later and that did seem to be the worst of his injuries out of the 4 traps he triggered, losing fingers and other decorations in the process as his progress slowed and he grew a little more cautious before racing towards the end. Unlike others, he did make it across just barely, falling flat onto the floor right after the finish line. Kit quickly raced over to scoop him and the parts up, mumbling some soft words about how it would all be better soon and how the gnome had really tried and done so well.

After Yorick Roy was fixed back up and prepared for the next race, she wandered over with her gnome to see the next course- a maze. At the comment of smart ones, the Beauxbatons girl glanced down at the gnome to be returned with a blank stare. Yeah, she hoped he didn't get lost forever. "Umm, good luck!"

The week had passed all but quickly for Theramin, he felt not the time nor the beauty of the sky turning burning red each and every day for the past seven days. It seemed but a few moments since the last race, since the last obstacle that Sir Exelsior had performed at bringing his overall placing down to 10.67 which was quite frustrating to Tristan himself. As such, he was back again here once more in front of the line of another race. He taps his finger against his thigh, a bit of nervous energy rushing against the pit of his mind, as he places the gnome on the line, rubbing his fingers against each other, tapping his foot slightly upon the ground. He grimaced with the greatest wince that one could have and stepped backwards allowing the gnome to start the race. It was not truly anything but today, he felt dark and depressed and was filled with melancholy no matter what he did. He saw Pierre with his brother Romeo, placing his gnome on the line, encouraging its success. He saw Emma Lee cheer on her gnome enthusiastically and carefully felt the pain in his heart. Ava only gave a quick smile and Lea gave a confused sounding good luck. Today, Tristan would say nothing, an experiment of sorts if cheering on truly did bring success, or not.

Gnome Racing Day - 17 July, 2023

These races had been replete with highs and lows; ups and downs; congratulations and condolences; and a lot of exhilaration and exhaustion. In short - Stephen felt like he'd been on a roller coaster ride and he wasn't even the one running the races.

He and EmmaLee both watched Gnome Matter What with a great deal of expectation given his stellar performance in the last round, but alas, these races seemed destined to spotlight different talents and abilities, so the wealth and recognition was spread amongst the little group. Even so, it was rather shocking when Gnome Matter What utterly collapsed, breathless, and wasn't able to finish the last round. Stephen knew EmmaLee was concerned about her little fellow and had already grown attached to him. He knew that had to be the case because he'd grown attached to his fumbling, bumbling, purple pirate himself.

They both had such personalities and he, for the first time, was beginning to wonder if this was going to be a day of sorrow no matter how the race ended because all of the gnomes would once again be unenchanted. Stephen had mostly only focused on his and EmmaLee's gnomes, but looking around the race track at the other gnomes, there was plenty of spunk and grit and determination to go around. Looking to their creators, he knew there was bound to be some sadness, but would the gnomes realize any of what they had had for a few hours and had suddenly lost? Would they have any memory of any of this?

These questions sounded idiotic on the surface, but magic was still, in many ways, a whole new world he was still not entirely sure of, so who was to say? How could anyone really know? He would have a healthy skepticism no matter who told him no residual memories could possibly exist just as he didn't believe it when his grandfather told him that fish, when hooked at the end of a fisherman's line, could feel no pain. Absurd!

All of this quickly flashed thorough his brain as he watched EmmaLee fret a bit. He had turned his attention to Gnome N. Clature and winced through almost every painful step, but his little fella finished the race! Not in the top standings, but he finished and he was proud of himself. As soon as the race ended, they both darted over to the track to retrieve, console and congratulate their racers. Gnome N. Clature simply would not rest until he was able to see for himself that Gnome Matter What was going to be fine.

He may not have the brain of an Einstein or an Edison, but he definitely had the heart of Job. Stephen pushed his worry down when hearing that the next course would be challenging smarts and he swore he could taste a little bile rise up in his throat. Gnome N. Clature hopped down and ran after Gnome Matter What who was frantically telling his pirate friend in some ancient gnome-ish sign language to 'come on!'

There was nothing to do but laugh. For now. There was a better than good chance he would be casting a Reparo!, or ten (thousand), on his little guy after this next round ended. As they watched them run off to the maze challenge, Stephen shouted after them both, "You both have this! Just keep plugging away and remember - there's gnome looking back!"

He looked at EmmaLee and couldn't suppress his laughter. "I've been waiting to use that one for a while, now."

𝒯he race continued on and the gnomes continued the fight for dominance. Bidget was solidly in the middle of the pack still; Amadea of course hoped that she would make a comeback at some point and somehow emerge at the top of the leaderboard, but at the same time, Amadea felt like being solidly in the middle was good enough. When she had created Bidget, she had not built the gnome to be the best; she had built Bidget for fun and that was exactly what these gnome races were.

Mini Maze Mayhem was the next race. Amadea hoped that Bidget had the intelligence to navigate through the maze successfully. With a small smile, Amadea placed her gnome down at the beginning of the race and looked around. As with the other rounds, people were lining up and giving words of encouragement to their gnomes as she waited for the race to officially begin.

At this point, Amadea felt as though she was at a loss for words. She felt like she had given Bidget all of the words of encouragement already, but she also knew that it would be weird not to say anything. "Okay Bidget," she said, patting her gnome on the top of its head. "I believe in you. You can totally do this. Don't let the hedges confuse you, okay? It's just a little maze. If you get tripped up you'll just have to keep going!" As always, it felt a little weird to be talking to her gnome, but since Amadea didn't really recognize any of the other people here (where had Bloom disappeared to?) she figured talking to her gnome was less lame than talking to no one at all. So, here she was.

It was obvious from the tone of the announcer that this course was much less destructive, and therefore fun to commentate, than the last one. A few gnomes got extremely lost and even doubled back multiple times into the same dead-ends. Giggles came from the crowd and the now muted voice of the announced worked its way back up to trying to get in on this attention.

"Ha! Look at poor Jerome.. and Sir Fickly! Both so confused. Poor things." He tried to make it seem like he'd been keeping a close eye on this one, not writing puns for the thunderdome at his table.

A few enthusiastic students cheered on their little creations, but they have done more harm than good in some cases. The little hedge maze wasn't even enchanted to change or trap, but not every Gnome was built with brains in mind...

Meanwhile, Donald watched as, with absolute skill, his Gnome tripped into the hedge wall and got stuck. Another Did not Finish score. What a... whatever. A smile came to Donald's face as he knew it was over, but he'd had fun watching it. Even if his gnome was garbage.

"Thunder-gnome is starting! Get your gnomes in there and say your goodbyes! Let's brawl!"

Gave some extra time as we started weird before, let's finish this thing! One week of thunderdome begins now. Top ten gnomes participate but any past race participants can still RP as the gnome going in to fight and losing eventually, etc. On Sunday, in about 8 days, I will post final results and a little award ceremony. Posting penalties made a big difference. It saves some people from completly losing their top 10 slot and it kicked some inactive people from top 10. That feels like a win-win.

It seemed Kit should have had more confidence in her little gnome friend. Perhaps it was luck or he was truly thinking through these maze directions, but it would take a bit before he stumbled on an obstacle. It did seem to affect him for a bit, blinking at the wall standing before him before retracing steps back to continue through only to find another dead end that seemed to just appear before him. Watching as a spectator was exciting though, having a far easier view of the course to know where one was 'supposed' to go. She watched with anticipation as the gnome stopped to watch the wall, hoping it wouldn't take long before he went on his way. And that would end up being the case, able to reorient himself properly and continue along in the proper direction. It likely helped that there were quite a few other gnomes at the same place as Yorick, acting as a guide to follow until eventually they all reached the finish line at the same time. Kit was impressed, only 10 seconds passing between first and her gnome. Still middle of the pack, but she cheered nonetheless as Sir Roy crossed with little damage this time, only a dazed mind as he stared blankly. "It's okay! You probably won't need your mind when fighting anyway... almost done! You've done so well!" The girl smiled before picking the gnome up and getting them prepared for the next and final stage- how exciting!
