Ah, good old dinner time. James strode in a little later than usual, but it was only the first week. He'll get into the schedule again, eventually. For now, though... His eyes scanned the Gryffindor table, deciding where to sit. While there was some fraternizing between the years, there wasn't too much of that. There were instead clumps of different years; for example, first through third years liked to sit at the farther end of the table, towards the staff table. Older years, such as fourth through seventh, seemed to always congregate near the back, where it was easier to mess around. The middle, though... The center of the table was where James preferred to sit. It's like a melting pot of years, the older years talking about their classes that were way over his head, while the first years tended to stare at everyone more senior than them with awe like no other.
It was weird, he decided, being a second year. He didn't know much, and yet the kids in the year below him seemed to regard him as somehow better. He didn't quite understand, but maybe he would with time.
Taking an open spot on the bench, he loaded up his plate. The food at Hogwarts was frankly excellent. Not only were there traditional British, Irish, and Scottish foods, but foods closer to what he was used to. His mum loved cooking, so he wasn't a stranger to South-Indian dishes. Somehow, the house elves recreated several of his favorite dishes, such as Andhra green chili chicken Biriyani, Coorg Pandhi curry (a rich pork curry), idlis (a rice and lentil cake), and coconut rice. Digging in with his fingers, he grabbed some of the rice and some of the curry, savoring the flavors. It wasn't as good as his mum's, but it was still super good! Glancing around, he spotted a few first years still lingering by the door to the Great Hall. He scooted over, allowing someone to sit next to him. It may be fun to haze a first-year or two. Only time will tell.

Bridgette was losing their mind in their classes. They were all for, well, learning but sometimes Muggle Studies just wasn't it for them. The professor was great and all, but the subject was droll, just rolling on and on and on and they could barely keep their eyes open. By the time the bell rang, they had dozed off a few times only for their classmate to nudge them awake, furthering their path to anger. It was the things that made little sense that just pushed one farther and farther to anger, that pushed them a little too far at times.

So when this particular classmate decided to nudge them one more final time as the bell rang, they snapped. "Will you right bugger off? They hissed, raising their voice at the hufflepuff girl. She responded by flinching and turning her nose up at them, walking away with a stomp in their step. Well that went so well.

Bridgette, afterwards, pinched their temples with an angry sigh before getting up. They felt awful, but it wasn't their fault that some idiot decided to wake them up and ruin their peaceful sleep. They gathered their things, shoving their parchment into their satchel and the books and gods there were so many stupid books and why did it take so long to put the stupid books in the stupid satchel and FUCK. They sat down and took a calming, ten second breather, head in their hands and eyes shut tight.

While they were doing that, a few people entered and exited the room. The didn't know how long they stayed their, but when a tap on their shoulder prompted them to look up, it was someone telling them that it was dinner time. They had sat there for twenty minutes. And was missing dinner.

Maybe that was why they were so angry. Maybe they just needed to eat something. Gathering up their things once again, they exited the Muggle Studies classroom and hurried down the stairs. Hopefully there would be a lot of Mac 'n Cheese and corn and peas and... mmm... oven baked chicken. Oh that sounded so good. They smile at the thought, a lot of exhaustion showing through their angry exterior and entered the Great Hall. Oh gods the smell was insane. So many different spices and aromas entered their nose and they couldn't help but flick their hands against the side of their uniform in order to expel some of the pent up energy of the day.

Bridgette surveyed the crowded table of Gryffindor and couldn't find a spot that was open until their eyes landed on a second year they had seen in the halls. Vaguely they remembered bumping into them, maybe? Who knew how they justified sitting across from the boy with a reluctant grin and continuing to pile their plate with what was probably the best chicken they would ever eat in their entire life. Of course, there were tons of other foods to eat and they could see the boy had already gotten their fair share, but they were so very adamant about the American food that Hogwarts served every so often.

"How come you're not talkin' to no one?" They called over the noise, putting their hair back into a ponytail with the hair tie on their wrist.

As James was lost in the flavors of India, he was called back to the reality of Hogwarts by... Another Irish accent! His eyes lit up as his eyes flicked up and down the new person. A first year. His lips quirked into a slightly cocky smile.

James was no stranger to pranks or hazing. Pranking people was one of his favorite activities. He remembered over Christmas break when he and a few house elves hid Christmas crackers in small storage spaces all over the house. When everyone sat down to eat, the house elves set off the crackers. He swore his dad nearly hit the ceiling from how startled he was. So far, he hadn't done many pranks, especially not at school, but that would change today. Though this was less of a prank and more of just... light rumor spreading. Still, it would be funny to see the look on their face. Shaking his head lightly, he locked eyes with the wixen.

"Ah, I suppose I've been a bit quiet, haven' I?" He wiped his hands on a napkin, tilting his head. "Just mullin' over one o' the lessons in Defense Against the Dark Arts today." He studied their expression, ensuring they were hanging onto his every word. Now... What creature would they believe that Professor Lécuyer would bring in? Especially to a second year class. Wracking his brain for something scary, he suddenly got it, as if a lightbulb going off in his brain.

"After all... There's nothin' like seein' a thestral."

James, of course, had never seen a thestral. There's no way he possibly could, having never seen anyone die. However, tricking this first year would be absolutely priceless.
