Bridgette finished their classes for the day, their robes wrinkled from sleeping during their last class. It had only been ten minutes, but it had been enough to tousle their hair and to leave them groggy and unawares as the bells rang to release them for the day.

A quick mental check of their current studies and what needed to be done lead them to the courtyard rather than the library, considering the recent interactions that had occurred recently and the fact that, for the life of them, they couldn’t focus. There was too little going on and their thoughts wandered so much that it made it hard to focus. So the courtyard it would be for the day.

It was cold, but not so much so that it was uncomfortable. They supposed that had something to do with Hogwarts’ magical origins or something like that, Normally they would’ve already found a study buddy, but any friends they made since they’d arrived at Hogwarts were busy for the afternoon. Bridgette wasn’t particularly particular about that sort of thing, and wasn’t discouraged by the rejections they received.

Peering into the courtyard they realized that there wasn’t much going on. None of the bullies or the weirdos were there and Bridgette was only one of maybe ten others residing there. What a relief. If they had had to practice spells in front of a hundred students they didn’t know what they would do about the unavoidable anxiety incident, whether it be a bordering panic attack or just the quickening of breath, it would likely still be an incident of some type.

The last class of the day had been Charms, and unfortunately for them they had completely missed what had been said about the one they were to learn. Something about dancing? Or something like that? They were not sure, of course, so they were sitting on the fountains edge with their books propped on the edges as well as on their lap, furiously flipping pages in order to see what they had missed. Finding the exact page was going to be quite a feat, but if they just worked hard enough then it should be just fine.

Brig flipped open another textbook, and coincidentally it happened to be one about a dancing charm called Tantellagra or something like that. They peer closer, reading it and then picking their wand up with a closed fist, holding it to where they think it’s supposed to be held, and spoke the words.

Nothing happened. Well. That’s what they thought. Their wand wasn’t pointed at their book, instead it’s too was pointed at their own feet, and they couldn’t help a furious blush when their legs began to twist around themselves. It seemed their spell had completely failed.

Bridgette’s eyes welled with tears that they refused to let fall while their wand hand was pointed into the air and their body twisted into itself. They probably looked absolutely ridiculous, and if they were any more worried about how they looked they would probably explode.

Time and Date: Afternoon after classes, second week of September.
Reducio
Important Note for September-October 2023: For these two months only, Tes is wearing nice black clothes, will be clean at all times, and her hair will be brushed and semi-neat. She is not wearing her signature bandanas, rather only a thick black bracelet made out of ebony wood to cover her werewolf bite. Her freckles are faded, and she has no sunburns. By default, her expression is bland, and she doesn't have her usual pep in her step. Anyone who has seen her before can see this is out of sorts for her, but she doesn't seem sad or like the behavior should be of any concern for her wellbeing, simply that she's more serious and less energized or joyful.
Tes's first weeks back for second year hadn't been terrible, but it certainly wasn't great. Something was off about the normally bubbly girl; nerves skittish from her unfortunate run-in at summer camp over her lycanthropy, and from the month in America pretending to practically be a different person. It was hard seeing her friends from the previous year, knowing that her appearance and personality had shifted from what they were familiar with. It wasn't anything too drastic; she was still friendly and kind, but now instead of bubbly and outgoing she was more polite and cautious.

It meant was that at times like this when classes were let out and the weather was crisp but not miserable, Tes made her way outside into the almost barren courtyard instead of the dorm or the library where any of her friends may be. Her legs ached to run breakneck through the open grounds, her hands itched with the urge to scramble up a nearby tree, and her wrist tingled with the urge to be free in her comfortable tank tops and bandana rather than her current School uniform and ebony wood cuff.

Instead of giving in to the urges, she started to head over to a shaded part of the courtyard, mindful of her grandmother's warnings about freckles being a sign of carelessness and trying to stay out of the sun. On her way, she heard the familiar incantation of the Dancing Feet Spell and glanced up to see a small first year with wild curls of red hair trying to practice the spell. Her lips curled into a smile at the sight, remembering her own experiences trying to learn her own first charms, and her antics in the library associated with it.

That smile turned into a startled shout as the spell not only backfired but sent its caster scrambling with their wand pointed in the air. Without thinking, Tes grabbed her own wand from her pocket, strode closer to the first year so she could be sure of her aim, traced the shape of a shield in the air, and said firmly, "Finite Incantatem!" Casting the general counter-spell, a red light erupted from her wand, hopefully putting a stop to the red-head's twisting. Tes couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief that her counterspell hadn't backfired onto her, seeing as she'd also only just learned it in her own charms class this year, and she wasn't exactly known for being the best spellcaster.

She offered her hand to the first year, either to help them up or stabilize them. "Are you okay? You really shouldn't be trying out spells with your wand in your hand before you're sure about them." Tesla stepped back, sticking her hands in her pockets, and glancing away for a moment to gather herself. "I'm Tesla Stone, a second year Hufflepuff. Sorry if you didn't want me jumping in, but you seemed like you could use some help. Want me to try to teach you the spell? It's just about the only one I could do my first year. Tes tilted her head, a bit of her signature smile coming back to her face at the joke at the own expense.

Bridgette's flushed red face would turn when another's face would come into view, tears threatening to fall if they weren't let down. "Please let me down," They whimper, a small smile on their face to help convince their new comrade to help them out a little bit. They hadn't been intending for the spell to go wrong, of course, as it had worked just fine in class when Professor Fresnel had introduced the spell to them in their first ever Charms class. Bridgette had been quite proud of that feat and had absolutely written home about it, as well as a second letter to their grandmother once the former had been finished and sealed and the whole shebang.

As their legs are done twisting around themselves and they can finally let out their first full breath in over a minute, they bent over, hands on their knees and their frizzy shoulder-length hair going wild. Why couldn't today just be normal for once? "Thank you, so much," Bridgette's breath was patchy and uneven as they regained it. They wiped their eyes before taking an actual look at their savior. "What is, uhm, your name? And your pronouns?" Their question was innocent, and should the other take offense to it, they wouldn't know what to do. But for some reason, they didn't think that they would. They seemed like quite the person. There was something about them that seemed off and they couldn't place it. Maybe they were hiding something? Who knew... but they stashed that to the back of their mind, their stomach rolling.

They smiled at the question of their well being, and ignoring the skip over of an introduction. They would get a name eventually, it was just common courtesy. "I, I'm okay now, thank you, again. I really should have just tried the wand movements and then the stupid words or whatever. I mean, I got it right in class! How could I have done it wrong that badly when all I'm doin' is practicing?!" Their hands were in the air, a confounded and absolutely confused look on their face. They were telling the truth! It wasn't like they were stupid or something!

They sat on the ledge of the fountain before patting it, indicating that the other should sit so that they could talk properly. Bridgette glanced at them again from their seat on the fountain at the introduction, smiling. "I'm Bridgette Mooney, you can call me Brig if you'd like. I know my name is a mouthful sometimes. Erm, I'm a first year Gryffindor. And yeah I'd like a little help, heh." They realized their wand was laying on the ground, completely unattended, and hurried to pick it up before it could get angry at them for letting it fall to the ground and flat out leaving it there. They gave it a little pet before sitting back down, once again turning to look at their new friend in hopes that they hadn't appeared too weird.
