No Smoke Without Fire
26 June 2023, late afternoon
Dee opened the door to the abandoned toilets, peeking in to make sure they were empty. People didn't always respond well to someone intruding on their pivate affairs, as she'd learned. Okay, in all honesty, she didn't really care, but she was perhaps about to do something slightly insane, and didn't want to do it where everyone could see. Plus, this seemed like a great spot for what she was planning. Very... safe. Not much that could go wrong.
She also came prepared; wearing a worn out pair of shorts and a shirt that was slightly too tight and would probably not return to Hogwarts with her next year, anyway... which was good, because they probably wouldn't survive the day. Well, they certainly wouldn't. Precautions that came from years of duelling experience, she vaguely knew what to expect. She only hoped that was the only thing that wouldn't survive.
Setting down her bag at a careful distance, Dee toed off her shoes and socks, then uncurled the fingers of her left hand, revealing a small phial that shimmered in the afternoon light which filtered in from the window. It was filled with a dark liquid, almost black, but shimmering blue or purple depending on how the light hit, and Dee couldn't help the slightly manic smile that spread on her face. But what else was she supposed to do? She did have to make sure it worked before she was met with a situation in which it was critical, right?
With a flick of her thumb, Dee uncorked the phial, then tipped her head back and drained its contents with one swallow. The potion shot down her throat leaving ice in its wake, her mouth and throat suddenly so cold it almost hurt, and Dee shook herself. She cleared her throat, trying to get rid of the feeling. "Well," she muttered, "that is what it's supposed to feel like, right?" A good sign, she assumed.
Taking a deep breath, Dee drew her wand from her pocket. "No time to waste," she told it, before pointing it at her own... hmmm. What was a good place to test it? Her stomach? Shoulder? Perhaps her knee... Shaking her head, she finally settled on her left arm, that seemed safe enough. There was a small, nervous twist in her stomach, her inner sense of self-preservation telling her that she was being a bloody idiot and should immediately put down her wand, thank you very much. She squashed both the feeling and the voice, straightening resolutely. "Incendio Duo."
Perhaps her wand had sensed her hesitation, because the spell came out hesitantly, sputtering, but it still came; spouting green flames that latched onto the fabric of her shirt immediately. Dee flinched away instinctively, ready for the burning pain, shoulders tightening and drawing up to her ears... but nothing came. A soft, warm, tickling sensation, that was all there was, even while her eyes told her that that was clearly impossible, because that fire was real and should definitely hurt. "Cool," she breathed, fascinated.

𝓐madea was looking for an adventure. What kind of adventure? She wasn't entirely sure. The school year was ending in a few days and she was wracking her brain trying to find things to do. At this point, she had completed all of the end of year assignments she had to finish and was ready to begin packing up her things to travel back home. But Amadea was tired of being productive; she wanted to do something fun before she went home. Unfortunately, when she had voiced this desire to her two best friends, they had not responded in the way Amadea would have expected. If she had to use any word to describe Ami and Cecily it would 100% be adventurous. There was never an instance where Amadea found herself hanging around the two girls without a crazy event happening. Whether planned or stumbled upon, Amadea's friends attracted adventure; on an average day this was very nerve wracking for her. Amadea spent most of her days trying to get all of her work done, enjoy her relaxation time, and spend time with friends. Throwing in the bomb of uncertainty that came with hanging out with Ami and Cecily often made that more difficult.
But of course, the one time Amadea was the one looking for an adventure, she was at a loss. Neither of them were available to hang out, so Amadea was left to discover her own adventure. Her past reliance on her friends to create or discover the adventure was now becoming a glaring disadvantage as Amadea found herself outside the door to the abandoned toilets. She had absolutely no idea where to begin with this whole adventuring business. For starters, Amadea didn't like breaking the rules. She knew that the most fun adventures usually included some sort of illegal activity (especially when Ami and Cecily were involved) but now that she didn't have the peer pressure of her friends around her to break the rules with them, Amadea didn't know where to begin. Her mind flashed back to the beginning of her first year at Hogwarts, when she had gone on an adventure with Ami and their old friend Kyden to explore the underground tunnels located underneath Hogwarts. Perhaps she could pick up there.
Amadea hadn't traversed the underground tunnels in a while, but it was because the last time she had been there, they were violently attacked by rats. Okay. Maybe it wasn't a violent attack. After all, it was Amadea who was invading their space. But still, why would she willingly put herself in a situation where she could be trampled by sewer creatures? Maybe that was harsh, she thought to herself. She knew that rats got a bad rap but were not actually that horrible, especially considering that Serena owned a pet rat. While Amadea could never imagine having one as a pet, perhaps she could put her biases about rats aside long enough to re-explore the tunnels.
Amadea was not entirely sure how legal it was to go exploring in the tunnels. She hadn't heard anything explicit about not entering them, but they were dark and dreary so she simply assumed that students were not supposed to frequent them. That was why she found herself standing outside of the abandoned toilets; if anyone was going to tattle on her, they couldn't do so if they couldn't find her in the first place. The abandoned toilets were named for a reason, so Amadea felt confident that no bystanders would be present to witness her descent.
As she pushed open the door, disappointment immediately ran through her as she saw a figure. What was someone else doing here? she thought to herself. When she stepped into the room fully, Amadea was able to take in the full picture of events that was transpiring. Immediately, she was rendered speechless. The person was entirely engulfed in bright green flames, making it impossible for Amadea to identify the figure.
What was going on? Why did Amadea always stumble into situations involving fire? Balancing her incredulousness with the weird almost knowing feeling since it was a situation involving fire, Amadea fumbled in her robes for her wand, grasping the wood as she whipped it out as quickly as possible. "Aqua Eructo!" she yelled, watching as the water erupted from the tip of her wand. Now that the flow was streaming toward the flaming figure, Amadea was realizing that she probably should have just cast the regular water-making spell because it would be a lot easier to control the pressure esp with her 16 ARC oof, but her mind had instantly gone to the extreme. After all, it was fire. More water = less fire, which was the goal. No, everything would be fine--shit, Amadea thought as the spell collided with the person, sending them flying head over heels onto the ground. "Oh my god I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hit you that hard," she said immediately, waving the water away and slipping her wand back into her robes. Now drenched in water, Amadea could decipher the figure as Dealla Prince, a Ravenclaw who was a few years younger than herself. Well, Amadea had certainly found herself an adventure...definitely not the kind she was expecting to stumble upon.
"Are you okay?" She wasn't sure if she was referring to the fact that she had just waterboarded the poor girl or if she was referring to the fact that she had walked in to find Dee on fire. Either way, Amadea was ready for some explanation.

One moment, Dee was gleefully inspecting her own burning arm - the fire was spreading quickly across her body, but all it did was make her giggle - the next moment she was being blasted across the room with the force of a freight train. Back to the door, she'd never seen her would-be attacker coming; although she might have been too distracted to notice, either way. Not like she could have expected this. It didn't even register as water at first, she might as well have been hit by a giant flying brick, forcing the air from her lungs and sending her tumbling to the ground.
It took a few seconds of gasping for air before she realised she was suddenly dripping wet, coughing and spluttering and wheezing, water burning in her eyes. Oh, and of course the fire had gone out. Marvelous.
"What the hell!" She'd meant to shout - accusingly, if possible - but it came out as more of a... yell-y kind of whisper, and she had to pause to draw a long, wheezing breath after the first two words. Her vision was still blurry, and Dee frantically started blinking the water out of her eyes, as to glare at the intruder more effectively.
Slowly, the fuzzy humanoid shape in front of her swam back into focus, just in time to match a blurry face to the clearly freaked out voice. Dee paused, then squinted. "Dea?" she asked for confirmation, then gingerly pressed her fingers against her ribs where the water had hit her and winced. Probably not broken, but definitely sore. Experience from duelling practice told her it would turn into a nasty bruise if untreated. Pushing herself to her feet, Dee felt the water drip from her fingers, her clothes, even the tip of her nose as she straightened up, and grimaced. "What'd you do that for?" The words came out a little whiny, almost petulant. There had likely never been anyone this unhappy to be extinguished, but she'd wanted to test the extent of her potion's effects; how long it would last, if more fire would make it wear off faster. It wasn't like she couldn't handle a little fire. She was a duellist, for Merlin's sake. Instead she was now drenched and dripping, and wasting precious time off her fire immunity.
Are you okay, Dea asked, and Dee gave her a look that clearly said she was doubting the Hufflepuff's sanity. "Peachy," she replied dryly, shaking her hands to get rid of some of the water, then turning slowly without offering further commentary as she tried to figure out where her wand had gone. She must have dropped it when the water/brick had hit her, and made a mental note to include holding onto her wand when being thrown around unexpectedly in her training. Dropping it certainly wouldn't help in a duel.
She finally spotted it a few metres off to the side and went to retrieve it, her shoes squeaking and squelching with every step. She probably looked like a wet poodle. A very pitiful wet poodle. Huffing, she bent to pick it up, then turned around, pointing her wand at Amadea. "Next time you want to start an impromptu waterfight, please give me a heads up first? I was busy, you know." Sniffing, she turned her wand on herself, ready to get rid of the water. "Aer Calidus."

𝓐madea wanted to slap herself silly. Dee was sputtering over the water, clearly upset. It appeared as though Amadea had completely misread this situation. Though her brain could still not wrap around the fact that Dee would...want to be set on fire? Was she some sort of masochist?
"God, I'm so sorry," she repeated herself again. Dee was standing in front of her looking like a wet rag and Amadea wasn't exactly sure how to fix the situation. She wanted to cast Aer Calidus to clear up the water but Amadea was sure that if she pointed her wand toward Dee again, it would end badly. Amadea didn't blame her, that's for sure. Considering the trajectory of the last few events, Amadea would also be on her highest defense.
Still, she was absolutely insanely confused. Dee's words were clearly sarcastic and annoyed and Amadea cringed a little bit more, wanting to sink into the floor and disappear. All she had been trying to do was make the situation better - after all, Dee was on fire - but it appeared as though she had done the complete opposite. But she still had no idea why Dee was on fire in the first place. "God, yes, of course, again, I'm so sorry," the words practically fought themselves to tumble out of Amadea's mouth. "I guess...I just saw the fire and acted out of impulse." She hoped that her explanation was coming across as just that: an explanation, not an excuse.
"Um...but what were you doing? On fire? That was purposeful?" Amadea was still so, incredibly confused and she was ready to see what the heck was going on. She also wanted to clear all of the air so that Dee wouldn't hold a grudge for this.

Dea was clearly apologetic, roughly judging from the number of times sorry appeared in the Hufflepuff's responses. As she dried her clothes, some of Dee's annoyance faded, and by the third apology, she started giggling. "Oh, stop it, it's fine," she replied, waving her hand absently so Dea would get a short turn of getting blasted with warm air as well. (Better than cold water, Dee reasoned.) "Although I wish you'd used Aguamenti instead of Aqua Eructo. Or just Extinguo, for that matter. I know you're probably more used to the more fancy spells, but that's no reason to forget the basics." She sniffed slightly. "My ribs hurt."
Done with her singed clothes, Dee took some time to also blowdry her hair, which started poofing up stubbornly immediately. "I thought I'd have som privacy in here, seeing as these toilets are supposed to be abandoned and all, but obviously I misjudged that." She gave Dea a long look that was just a little bit judgmental. "Speaking of, what are you doing here?"
But yeah, true, now that she thought about it, Dea probably wasn't the only one here who owed an explanation. Walking in on someone on fire would be rather concerning. That's why Dee hadn't planned on anyone walking in. Inconvenient, that. "Oh, yeah, that was on purpose," she replied offhandedly, wrangling her hair back into a ponytail. She'd have to take care of that later. Reaching into her pocket, she produced a small vial with a black liquid in it. "I was testing this," she explained, offering it to Amadea. "You know, to see how long it would last, how strong the effects were, if more fire would use it up quicker, that sort of thing. For science." A concerning phrase if there ever was one, but meant completely seriously. A sudden thought occurred to her. "Hey, your spells are stronger than mine. Do you want to try setting me on fire?"
