Ava’s spellcasting wasn’t the best overall, but it could get the job done. All she knew was that she had perfectly cast the Incendio, and the spell had hit Avery.

Only one small problem, Avery had also hit her. Perfectly. His spell had less force than hers, but it was still inconvenient. She wouldn’t admit defeat over a burn, though. She would push through.

Noticeably, the commentary from Damion was missing from this round, and she scoffed. She loved how much it annoyed Avery to have Damion commenting on his failures.

Two of her now worst enemies in the same spot, now how to take them down, but she would figure it out later. The searing pain of the fire was still imminent, and she attempted to cover the affected areas. She saw Avery gritting his teeth across from her and allowed a smirk to escape behind her sealed lips. As long as Avery wasn’t satisfied, she was.

Ava knew she was at a disadvantage from the start; she had seen how careful he held his wand and how confident he seemed. She had not cared to admit it. She did not like it. But now, coming head to head, proud of this fact. If she could win this battle, oh Merlin, she would be one of the best of her year. She doubted many could say they had not only dueled but also won.

She cast her eyes back on the duel and gripped her wand, moving her stance into a more defensive position, with less of her body angled toward him, giving him less of a target. Her eyes flashed with pride as she prepared to cast yet another spell: hopefully a successful one.

”Tarantellegra” Ava cast, aiming her wand at her opponent. The end of the match was impending, and she wanted to be on the winning side.

Just when Ava thought she had a shot at winning, Avery shot a perfectly cast Incendio at her. That’s what you got for being cocky, she supposed. Didn’t make her any happier about what was happening.

As if to rub in the fact that he had cast perfectly, her spell had missed him. Somehow, he had managed to cast a perfect spell, and dodge hers. How was that even possible? It was like the odds were stacked against her.

To make it even better, she had caught a smirk on Damion’s face when Avery hit her. She grit her teeth together, seething from both the fire and her position in the game. If Ava was ever to be partnered with Avery, she would be grateful for his magical ability. But matched against him, it was a brutal thing to be against. Honestly, it was surprising she had made it as far as she had.

She held tighter to her wand as she raised it to cast again. She would not give either boy the satisfaction of her surrender. Only one thing left to do. Win.
