Reading At The Grounds
Self | Someone else | ThoughtsMadi was probably the most predictable person ever. She spent so much of her time reading, and anyone who had ever talked to her knew that. She was trying to stop that, because there was so much more to her personality. But, before she put that plan into action, she had to finish this book. She couldn't start a book without completing it, even if it was the worst book she'd ever read. She'd be left wondering for days what happened.
Feeling like she needed some fresh air, (and being bored with her common room and the library, there was only so much you could do there) she took her book and walked outside. She took a walk to the Grounds and then tried to find a spot to read. She eventually found a peaceful spot under a tree, where she could finish her book.
Madi loved the outdoors, it was so big, open, and unique. You could go anywhere and not feel like you were seeing the same place twice. Unfortunately, she didn't spend much time outside ever since she had come to Hogwarts.
She continued reading her book, surprised by how fast she was getting through it. She wasn't normally the fastest reader.

He planned on relaxing. How? He didn’t know. Should he train Wisdom? No.. Wisdom didn’t seem in the mood, and he wasn’t either. Should he play his violin? It would be a bit loud, many people are studying in his common room today. Maybe at the grounds? No.. he didn’t feel like it. After a while, he settled on reading. He had received a package from his parents a few days ago which was a brand new novel, and had forgotten all about it! That wasn’t normal of him, especially since his memory wasn’t bad. He got the novel from his trunk and went the grounds. This was the only real ‘quiet’ place in Hogwarts. Not even in the comfort of his bed it was quiet. His dorm mates weren’t exactly.. quiet. He went to his usual spot, a rock under the shade of a large tree. When he got there, he saw someone else, she was reading a book. It’s nice to see other book readers like him. He didn’t see much around hogwarts. “Hello! I haven’t met you before have I?” Oliver asked giving a warm smile. He plopped down on the edge of the rock. “I’m Oliver, finished your studies too?” Oliver asked her.

He went and sat down on one of the rocks near Madi, and introduced himself. "I'm Madi, it's nice to meet you, Oliver. And well, no, I haven't really finished my studies, but today's kind of my self care day, which means reading." Madi smiled jokingly. It was true, but Madi was the biggest procrastinator ever, so she had a lot of "self care" days. She also just wanted an excuse to read instead of study.
Madi then noticed that he was also carrying a book. "Oh, what book are you reading?" Madi asked. She liked seeing that he had a book, she didn't know too many people who would choose to read during their free time, it was nice seeing someone who would.

Oliver half expected her to continue reading and not acknowledge him. It's not like it hadn't happened before with someone else. It was nice to see someone who listened to him. He started wondering if people only didn't listen to him because he was a first year. But now he was a second year. Maybe it was different now? The ravenclaw introduced herself as Madi, she explained that she hadn't finished her studies yet, but its her self care day. Oliver didn't really have self care days. Studies were always first, no matter what. Even if he had to pull a sleepless night. Thankfully that hadn't happened a lot. She asked about the book he was reading, "Oh this?" He said lifting up his book. "Art of War. The english version of course." He was fascinated with many things, mostly muggle things. Despite having a muggle father, the only real muggle interaction he has was when he would play sports. "I like reading difficult books, this one just caught my eye because its so fascinating how muggles decide to solve problems. Having battles with each other. It's quite sad that War is what they choose to do. Were no different of course." He shared with her.

"It is sad. There are tons of different explanations for why. I can sort of get why they did it to solve problems a long time ago, but them still doing it now makes me a little sad." Madi admitted. "Really? I barely know anything about Wizarding wars." having grown up with Muggles, she didn't know anything about the magical world and after she had figured out she was magic, she had devoured every book she could get her hands on to try and get caught up, but of course she couldn't read every book and ended up missing a lot of important information, especially a lot of history. She had yet to read most of her history books. She had been more focused on spells and creatures and Hogwarts.

It was sad indeed, muggles still using this method years after it first started, it wasn’t even for good. Madi shared about how she barely knew anything about Wizarding wars, and honestly, Oliver didn’t either for the time before Hogwarts. His mother never talked about the Wizarding war. Oliver only knew there was one when his mother had mentioned something about it, but never mentioned it again. Oliver tried questioning her about it but always got pushed away, he gave up after a while. He didn’t understand back then. He only learnt about it reading, he understood why she didn’t want to talk about it, all the things that have happened back then are best forgotten. Oliver didn’t however, he took interest in them, he wanted to know more. He had borrowed lots of books about it from the library in his first year. “The wizarding war.. it was a topic not many want to bring up again. It’s understandable of course as to why they don’t. Would you like to know what happened? Or would you like to just read about it? I’m not a perfect source.” Oliver said. He thought about wether or not he would even share it, maybe it would be best if she didn’t know? No.. she was part of the wizarding community. She had the right to know. “There were 2 wars actually. The First Wizarding War happened before Harry Potter was born. Surely you’ve heard of him? It was a battle between a dark wizard named Voldemort and those who opposed him. Voldemort wanted to rule the wizarding world and believed in pure-blood wizard supremacy. Voldemort's followers, Death Eaters, caused fear and chaos. The good wizards formed the Order of the Phoenix to fight against them. A prophecy said a "Chosen One" could defeat Voldemort. It would be Harry. Voldemort decided it would be best to attacked the Potters to get rid of any obstacle that could obstruct his path to supremacy, but his curse backfired when he tried to kill baby Harry. Voldemort lost his physical form, and the war ended. Harry survived with a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. After Voldemort's defeat, the wizarding world was at a time of peace, many had celebrated, saying that Voldemort was gone. Even during that time many feared saying his name, referring to him as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”, but personally, I don’t see why. Sorry, that was a lot.. do you still want to know about the second war?” Oliver asked, he felt he had talked a lot. He loved studying as much as he loved sharing what he learned. He feared that he might have bored her. They had just met after all.

"Yeah, I know a little bit about him. The only known wizard to have survived the killing curse, and it was even stranger since he was only a baby when it was cast on him." She said, trying to remember what she knew. She listened to Oliver explain what it was like before Voldemort lost his physical form, and how that time, before Harry, was the first war. She nodded along as Oliver spoke. Then he said that he didn't understand why people were afraid of using his name, even after he was gone, and Madi couldn't resist giving her input. "I think people didn't use his name because it reminded him of that time, of that long war where everyone lived in fear. This is just a guess, but I think using his name resurfaced some of that old fear. It's hard to get over that fear of something, the fear that affected your life so badly for such a long time."
"Thank you for telling me! If you want to tell me about the second war, go for it. It's important to know. I'd also rather listen to you than read another history book." Madi smiled.
