After the first match had occurred, there were again two Slytherins ready to battle, who knows if this one will turn out the way the other one did, or if it will take another turn. As the moderator for this game, he would have the great honor of making sure the rules weren’t broken but as a Slytherin himself, if they could cheat by circumventing the rules rather than breaking them, he would let it pass. He announced out loud, “Ava Winchect and Duvessa Ember, you will be the last two competitors of the Gobstones Extravaganza. If you win this match, you will compete with the other winner for the title of Gobstones Extravaganza Champion. I will tell you who the other winner is after this match is over. I wish you two luck. I will be moderating this round in order to make you follow the rules. Hopefully, you have brought a change of clothes as you will be doused with a putrid substance if you lose. Here is a sheet with the rules of the game. We will be playing the Classic Version of Gobstones today. This involves seven gobstones on the floor and eight gobstones to throw.” After saying this Tristan handed out two sheets with the rules. He had prepared this in case there was a lack of knowledge in the players.

Saying that Duvessa was excited for it was a rather lie. She wasn't dashing downstairs and waiting ten minutes for them to come - no, she arrived perfectly on time as the clock stroke. The Slytherin listened to Theramin as he explained a few things, and then looked over to Ava and offered her a lazy smile.

She hadn't met Tristan yet, but he seemed to be a third year Snake who was moderating their Gobstone match. However, Duvessa had the same egging feeling in her stomach that she would loose. And that, she pictured dramatically, would be dreadful. Her pride and dignity would be lost too. She sat down and picked one of the marble-like gobstone and rolled it on her fingers. It felt smooth, and a great set.

She looked rather hesitantly, wondering what would be the best way to throw it. Her mind whirred quickly, and after a daunting pause, she picked one up and rolled it. Not too much accuracy, neither too much strength but a steady roll that she hoped would be a success. In fact, it had to.

Hardly daring to watch, her eyes targeted the small ball. In just a few second the outcome of the round would come.

Gobstones seemed to be a wizard thing, by her best guesses. She hadn’t heard of it in her life, so it was probably a pretty good guess.

Ava was definitely trying to do as many wizard related activities as she could to catch up to her wizardborn peers. She knew there were other muggleborns like her, but she seemed utterly terrible at all things magic related. She had already messed up in her potions class.

Maybe she wouldn’t be as terrible at the wizarding sports. Surely flying a broom couldn’t be as hard as casting a spell? She had found in her flying classes she hadn’t been terrible, so maybe spell-casting was more difficult.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t here to ride on any brooms. She was here to play a game of Gobstones, however you played that. Maybe--hopefully, it would be explained when she arrived.

She would have rather liked to arrive early, but she got so turned around within the castle that she ended up there with only a minute to spare. She couldn’t decide if it was a show of her good luck or bad luck that got her here at this time.

The leader, and also the moderator of the match, explained what the goal was and the championship. Her opponent looked perfectly calm, as if she had done this countless times before, even offering Ava a lazy smile. Ava did not return that smile, and she hid her clammy hands behind her back.

Tristan gave them each a sheet of paper explaining how to play, and her shoulders loosened a bit. "So a game of marbles?" She had played this game before, at home once and a few times at school. She hadn’t been great during those times, but at least she knew how to play.

Ava tried to put on a brave face as she reached for the gobstones, but there was a good reason she wasn’t in griffindor. She would never have the guts for many things, and competition seemed to be one of them. And trying new, wizard related, things.

Ava took the ball and examined it for a moment. She had no clue how this would work, but decided to just toss it.

With a whir, she tossed the ball, and crossed her fingers behind her back as she narrowed her eyes to watch the results.

The first round was ready to commence. Duvessa had arrived exactly on the dot, sitting down and getting ready to throw. Tristan saw that Ava’s shoulders lowered a little when she saw the rules. He deduced perhaps that they had never played Gobstones before. He waited as both Ava and Duvessa grabbed their stone and chose a move. They both threw their stones surprisingly the same way, a normal throw without any more power or carefulness. However, Ava despite her apparent nervousness threw her stone with flair. As both flew in the air, Tristan nodded as Ava’s stone contacted and flung Duvessa’s stone out the ring. However, Duvessa’s throw did not result in a success, with her stone landing short of the one she aimed for. After such, Tristan announced, “The first round is terminated. As can be seen, Duvessa, your throw was a failure, and Ava, your throw was a success. As such, Duvessa, you have seven gobstones left to throw and six left on the board. Ava, you have seven gobstones left to throw and seven gobstones left on the board. Ava, since you have won this round, you will be throwing first next round. Both competitors please choose your next move.

Maybe it was just beginners luck, but her ball seemed to be thrown perfectly. Well, not perfectly but certainly close. Maybe she could get into this sport afterall. She didn't stink at it, unlike the other things she had tried. (Admittably not much.) When the ball knocked the other off, she let out a sound of excitement, somewhat like a cheer but much quieter.

When she looked at her opponents balls, she noticed that she hadn't succeeded in her throw. Ava thought they had done similar throws, so she now knew that the throw wasn't a guaranteed success. She made no comment to her opponent on the results, and studied the new ball she had picked up. While there were no remarkable differences in this ball from her first one, she stared at it as if it held the answers to the match. Perhaps it did, but she would never be able to find out what they were.

It was her turn to throw first this round, because she had hit. She lifted the ball up and held it to her face for a moment before letting it fly. She decided to throw as similar as she could to her original throw, and she bit her lip as she watched the ball move across the space.

Were the Gobstones cursed? She glanced at Tristan suspiciously, wondering if he was silently rooting for Ava. Her throw had been a failure, rather unfortunately. And Ava had succeeded, taking the lead in the game. As he mentioned that her throw had been a failure, she bit her lip to stop herself retorting that she knew. She wondered if the next round would make it evident that perhaps she had better stick to some other sport.

She had been quite careful, but not too cautious in throwing. Perhaps she ought to have been much more careful and strive to move slowly? Hmm, the annoyance of not getting the gobstone to roll to Ava's were annoying. So she threw for the next round a bit more fiercer than she anticipated, but it was not a throw against the rules anyway.

Her pale fingers pushed a marble, praying that it would knock her opponents one. If worse came to worse, she could try... well, was it really cheating? Could it be called helping -her -gobstones? The shame of loosing was something she didn't want to bear. She offered Ava a nod to her successful throw, but inside was hoping that her next gobstone would miss.

Tristan Theramin had sat down in his place as moderator, taking in the details that others might miss of the two players, opponents of the same house. However, for the moment, the two players were but first years, having started their lives upon the Hogwarts Express, young children, innocent, beautiful compared to the cynical heart, Tristan had after all the years of pain and death that he had experienced. Death, death, death, death. All this death around him seemed to always be cases that he could prevent or at least alleviate. He smirked and hid all this pain away from those others that could see him, allowed no one to see the anguish he spent his entire life feeling. Sometimes the pain disappeared but it was terrifying, like a monster that could tear out of him any moment. It was evidence of love of course if he could admit it. He loved and he lost, so he couldn't escape the pain that came after it. It was worth it for the happiness he had and the beauty of the connection that he had gained. He blinked quickly, he had no idea why these thoughts had suddenly reached his mind during the game. Perhaps Edward still consumed his thoughts still, despite him not being conscious of it. When he looked back at the opponents, he quickly saw that their throws had both succeded, leaving Ava still on top. He nodded, wrote down these results quickly, then announced, "As can be seen, both throws were successful, however, Ava is still in the lead, so you will be throwing first next round."
