All the classes were over for the day and Cheryl walked down to the lake. She was walking all alone again. She didn't have any friends and she was socially awkward. It was a nice day. It was a cool day and there weren't many kids outside. She walked a little and found a spot to sit and watch the lake. Her long brown hair blew in the wind. Her blue-gray eyes focused on the glistering water. She thought a lot about home when she was alone like now and like most days. She wished that her family could be here to comfort her and tell her that everything was alright. She wished that someone would walk by and notice he and possibly talk to her. She sat there watching the lake and turning around every so often to see kids walking by laughing and giggling. She stood up and moved to a different place where there were fewer people than before. She still would hear people walk by but she wouldn't turn to see them anymore. She then began to skip stones to pass time. Each stone was a wish that she had and she pretended to send each one to a place where they would all come true. She stopped skipping stones and turned to look in the distance. She heard faint footsteps and could make out the shape of a person walking towards her. She felt like something inside her light up. She noticed that the person in the distance was walking alone. She told herself that she shouldn't be happy that someone is walking alone yet she was. She thought that this person might actually stop and talk to her. Then her body felt heavy. All of a sudden she felt her light inside get dim. She couldn't think of what to say to this person if they did stop to talk to her. She soon started to wish that the person would just pass by and ignore her. She felt like she would just embarrass herself if she attempted to talk to the person. She didn't know what to do. She looked up to see that the person was coming closer and her heart started to pound. She looked around for a place to hide so that the person wouldn't see her. She looked at the lake and thought that it was the closest place to hide. She could hold her breath for a while so she thought that she would be fine. She dove into the cool water as the person came even closer. She felt the water caress her body like if she were a baby. She hoped that the person didn't notice her diving into the water. She just hoped that they would ignore her.

A girl of average height with brown hair tied into two plaits, pretty blue eyes, and a skin tone that was a variation of white had made her way down to the Great Lake immediately after classes ended for the day. Her name was Ruby, she was nearly always straight-backed, and she carried herself with an air of sharp intelligence, quiet confidence, and something strong, like ambition, passion, power, or all three. She wasn't entirely aware of this air, it was natural for her, but people had told her about it before. She didn't have intentions to change it any time soon, since it felt normal and it didn't give away any information she would hate others to know about her.

The person who had walked so close to Cheryl was not Ruby, and as Ruby walked over to the lake, she watched that student walk away, wondering what had grabbed their attention only to make them leave so quickly. She peered into the glimmering lake carefully and saw a girl underwater there, looking as if she had just got in there. She had her robes and shoes on still, showing that this was probably a random, impulsive act, most likely to escape that other student, whoever they were. Ruby wrinkled her nose slightly and backed away from the edge of the water. She wouldn't like to have got all of that wet, and didn't like the idea of soggy robes and shoes afterwards. Anything in the girl's pockets would probably have been destroyed, unless it was waterproof.

With another glance at the girl in the water, Ruby noticed the Slytherin crest on her robes. She was pleased to see a fellow Slytherin, but wondered why on earth someone in the house of cunning, with shrewd and cleverness as house traits, would be in the water with robes and all on. Although she didn't blame the girl for possibly wanting to go in the water – it was a nice day, after all – she really hoped that this girl could swim and would surface soon. Ruby didn't want to have to deal with someone possibly drowning, not right now, not today.
