Mellani was enjoying the game quite a lot. She was especially enjoying having a sarcastic conversation with Colin. It reminded her of her muggle friends. Damn, she missed them. She'd never thought she would miss them, but apparently things weren't always the way you thought they were, and you got close to people without even meaning to.
Mellani smirked as her gobstone sent Colin's flying off the board, AGAIN, and his didn't. "Oh, I wouldn't be too sure about that, four gobstones is a small number to have,
but yeah, let's see who sucks less, if that's what you want.", she said, a confident smile on her face as she stared him right in the eyes, hoping to distract him, if only a little. She wasn't going to cheat, but manipulating wasn't against the rules, was it?
Mellani wondered which throw to go with. Conscious would be risky, she knew she didn't have much strength, but trying something new would be fun too. Besides, there was nothing bad in one failed throw, right? After all, Colin had had many of those and he didn't look like he cared much. Mellani sighed, and decided to go with Conscious, throwing the gobstone with as much strength as she could muster, hoping against hope that it would hit.

Colin smirked. This Mellani was proving herself to be quite the challenge! He had a pretty good throw last round, but Mellani was still beating him. Hmf. A voice rose from within: who does this girl think she is? A first year! She has no right to beat a second year this way! That part of Colin, surely his Pride, sought to entice him with thoughts of trouncing this new kid and rubbing his victory in her face! Colin's eyes flashed as she readied herself for her next throw. Let's see who sucks less!?
Colin's heart pounded.
Mellani stared at him.
Pride always seeks to overwhelm and bring one down. Colin growled softly. Anyone who heard him might think he was ticked off at Mellani. He shook his head like a dog. This wasn't Colin, really, was it? A prick who was so full of his own Pride that he couldn't countenance being wrong, being beaten by a first year girl? He had always found it easy to talk big, but what had he to show for it? Pride was a big thing in the world, even in the wizarding world, that much Colin knew. And how easy would it be for him to fall prey to Pride!
Mellani continued her stare. Colin wondered: does she like me or something? No, maybe I blanked out and she's wondering where I went? It was, frankly, a little unnerving. Colin could do The Stare, but he really wasn't that good at it. His heart, for all its wounds, was too joyful for The Stare.
No. Colin did not want to tread the path of Pride. He knew that it wasn't in his heart. He would accept the grace and bow to defeat if Mellani won. She was still staring at him. He shook his head again. Better throw and get this over with, before her eyes fall out or something! "You know, yer eyes'll get stuck that way!" he teased. He just hoped that she wouldn't affect his concentration too badly! And who knows? Maybe her concentration would be broken?
Colin palmed his gobstone, ready to throw!

Snakes at the ReadyTristan was a neutral moderator of the competition but he was quite enjoying the sarcastic banter that happened between each round. When Mellani began to jokingly taunt Colin, Tristan smirked and replied back, “It is getting a bit feisty around here, it seems.” He began to observe the two as they began their preparations to throw their stones. Mellani began to stare at her opponent, but Colin did not seem to become flustered. He instead told a joke which seemed to succeed at distracting his opponent for the moment. However, unexpectedly when both threw their stones, consciously and carefully, in their respective manners, the opposite result occurred. Mellani consciously threw her stone and it successfully hit her opponent’s gobstone out of the ring. Colin’s stone on the other hand seemed to take the perfect arc needed to hit Mellani’s stone out of the ring. In fact, it even hit the stone, but it didn’t take it out of the ring and left it still on the third ring. Tristan removed the thrown stone and counted the stones left. He then announced, “Colin, I believe luck has not found favor on you, as you now have only three stones left. Mellani, your first year skills have somehow left you on top, you still have six gobstones left on the board. Please prepare for your next throw, as I write both of your scores down.”OOC Rules

Mellani let out a short laugh at Colin's comment. Looked like the staring was not distracting Colin. Well, it was worth a try. She blinked, concentration shifting to the board as her throw succeeded yet again.
She smiled as Colin's throw failed yet again. She was slightly proud that although she hadn't even known what Gobstones was, she seemed to be winning, and unless Colin had a sudden turn of luck, she would not be the one to be covered in a foul smelling liquid.
With a deep breath, she contemplated her next throw. So far, careful throw was proving to be the best one, and Mellani only needed to make three of Colin's gobstones be thrown out of the ring to win. She threw her gobstone carefully, willing it to hit. She was honestly surprised at how lucky she had seemed to be in this round. "Good luck on trying to win, Colin.", she said, in a moment of pride.
She wondered if Colin would take the risk and actually start cheating, but she hoped not. She always liked and preferred fair play, although, if Colin did cheat, she might do it too. Probably not, because she did not want to get caught doing it, and she wasn't sure if she was very good at spells, so if it did backfire, the risk would be too great.

Desperate times called for desperate measures! Mellani's strategies had so far paid off and Colin found himself in the midst of desperate times indeed! He was down six gobstones to three. That could mean one of three things. Mellani could actually be a gobstones champ and just not telling anyone. Or, she could simply be cheating. Colin hoped that wasn't the case. Cheating is what lesser houses did. No, clearly Mellani was engaging in some subtle strategy to destroy him so completely.
Well, that had to stop!
If the first year wanted to play games, then games is what they would play! Colin examined the placement of the various stones left in the court. He checked out all the angles and likely trajectories of travel. Every now and then he'd look up and narrow his eyes at Mellani for good measure. There could be no harm in trying to put her off whatever it was she was planning! Make her think he knew exactly what she was doing!
Yeah, a little cycle all logical strategy wouldn't hurt his game one bit! Colin took up his next gobstone, stepped back a bit from the throw line and began his run. A slow and methodical wind up before releasing the sneakiest gobstones throw ever! His long and lanky arms whirled about him like a cricket bowler. Only the keenest of eyes would notice that the gobstone was not the only object in Colin's deft fingers!

Tristan Theramin wrote: 12 Jul 2023, 20:46Snakes at the ReadyTristan Theramin was quite an observant viewer and moderator so it was a feat that the players could ever cheat. It was after all an apt description to describe Theramin as a facsimile of the muggle Sherlock Holmes. Thus, he did indeed see a flash of a wand and witnessed a movement of the lips, of the younger Slytherin boy. However, Tristan had no clear definite proof to accuse the player of any illegal moves. Instead, it was only a brief moment of a wand in the hand of McCoire and only such. It was clear when slight snowfall began that someone had cheated, but without proof, he could not punish anyone this round. The light snowfall would affect everyone however for the next few rounds unless he cast a spell himself. He thus took out his wand and cast Meteolojinx Recanto, but in an event so rare for himself, the spell completely failed having no effect at all, not even a splutter of light. He was quite disgusted with the cast in fact. So thus the spell that had been cast to cause snowfall, kept on. Both players threw their stones, but perhaps the snow obscured their vision, as both had no success at all. None, at all. Both stones flew off into the distance hitting each other instead of the stones they were aimed for, knocking both of them out of the ring instead of stones that would increase their chance of winning.OOC Rules

Mellani sighed as snow began to fall. So McCoire had cheated. She was tempted to do so too, but something told her that it would not be wise. So for now, she'd just throw insults at McCoire, and hope that they would be enough to distract him.
"Idiot. You can't even throw your stone properly while you can see, I wonder what you'll do in all this snow, which by the way is the worst spell you could have used.", she said, and sure enough, his throw did fail, but so did hers. "Told you so", she said, just to emphasize her point.
Seriously, if Colin had wanted to cheat, and was so confident it would succeed, he could have at least tried something that would give him an advantage rather than something that would give both of them an equal disadvantage. If only Mellani knew how to counter the spell... which she very much did not because Hogwarts had pretty much just started for her.
She sighed and decided her next throw. After a small amount of thinking, she decided to go with the classic throw, because any throw would probably be equally difficult in this snow. She shivered as she threw the gobstone, trying to concentrate as much as she could, and hoping that it would succeed.

And even more desperate times called for ever more desperate measures! Colin's wand work had been flawless and snow drifts were piling up on Miller's head. Colin smirked. She was shivering. Welp. That's what happens in snow! Perhaps Mellani was from somewhere down south and not used to snow? Even so, the situation seemed bleak. Colin was, in fact, down to three stones while Mellani still had six!
Colin did take in a quick breath, though, when Mellani issued a rather snarky insult. Idiot!? Really? Huh. Worst spell I could have used!? Huh. We'll see about that Miss Smarty Skirt! Colin's face showed a mildly perturbed expression as he readied his next move. "Watch and learn, Miller! I shall make a killer move that will end the Miller Dynasty's reign of terror in the gobstone world once and for all!"
Colin got himself all dramatically positioned for the gobstone throw to end all gobstone throws! He stepped well back from the circle, just out of range of the snow. Hm. There wasn't much to see inside the circle, really, because a blizzard was now crossing, heading straight for Mellani. Oh well! He made a quick run up to the circle! He hopped twice! His arms began to whirl like a cricket bowler's! Then made a skip! His left toes landed right on the circle's edge and Colin leaned in! His long left arm arcked up and over and down! He sent his gobstone hurtling towards where he knew Miller's stones must be!
Colin's catapult throw, he hoped, would smash through the snow and whack Mellani's stones right out of the circle! As for his fudging, Colin hoped that all his theatrics and arm whirling would mask the fact that he ended up leaning quite a ways over the actual edge of the circle! And it wasn't exactly cheating right? What with all the snow blowing around, who can actually tell quite where the edge of the circle actually is!?

Snakes at the Ready
Snakes at the ReadyWith the failure of the recanto in his head, Tristan tried once more to end the frustrating snowfall, but it ended in failure once more, with the snowfall continuing on once more without fail. It was even worse for him because the spell had critically failed on him the round before leading to more snow on him than the others. He sighed as the spell failed once more although this time it was less critical. Although this attempt at the spell did not work again, he hoped for the next round indeed. When he heard Mellani purposefully whispering a joke to distract Mr. Collin, he raised his eyebrows and rolled his eyes. “Seriously your attempt at distraction needs to improve. It is not cheating but it is very close to the line. Move along to throwing please.” As the two opponents through, the bad luck of Colin continued and he did not succeed at knocking his opponent’s gobstone off the ring. Mellani’s luck was better, throwing strong and sure, with the gobstone perfectly exiting the ring neatly despite the attempt at using the grey between rules. “Ah perhaps the game shall end soon, as Colin you only have two gobstones left in the ring.”OOC Rules
