It was a Tuesday afternoon, and Slava was headed out to the Quidditch training pitch to get some practice in. He had taken a break from the team for a while on his mother’s orders—she wanted him to improve his grades and focus on school—but that meant that his skills had to be extra sharp if he wanted to work his way back to first string Beater. Besides, he loved being active, and Quidditch was one of his favorite things in the world. Why wouldn’t he want to practice?

Even being at a foreign school, Slava had grown to know the way to the training pitch well. He was often to be found outside, and during his visits to Hogwarts, he had become well-acquainted with the area and enjoyed spending time there. Still, he wouldn’t be sad to return to Durmstrang in a few days. The grounds there, while cold, were a lot more expansive and his school was one of the places he could truly call home. But that didn’t mean he didn’t find it fun to visit Hogwarts and meet lots of people from various different schools—he loved that, too.

He hummed as he walked to the pitch, broom in hand. Upon arriving, he was happy to see a newly familiar face, that of Ginyami Midorimori. They had met briefly for the first time four days ago at the Spring Court, a formal event hosted by Hogwarts that allowed students from all the visiting schools to better come together. While Slava and Ginyami hadn’t really had a chance to talk one on one, Ginyami had quickly been marked as "important" in Slava’s mind due to his association with Valentin and his way with words. He had certainly seemed interesting and worth getting to know better, at the very least. So when Slava saw Ginyami at the training pitch, he thought that he couldn’t have asked for a better scenario today.

“Hey! Ginyami!” he called to the airborne boy. “Do you want to practice together?” Slava smiled brightly, mounting his broom. Surely Ginyami would have no reason to refuse—outside of training skills such as speed and strength, practicing for Quidditch was always better with more people. The closer you could get to the real thing, the better. As Slava flew higher to become more level with Ginyami, he idly wondered how he had ever been scared of heights. There was nothing like the adrenaline of flying.

Upon hearing the sound of his name spoken, Ginyami paused mid-flight, looking around and down to locate the source of it before spotting a young man with dark curls. His face broke into a grin, recognizing the playful, lighthearted Slava of hugs and glitter a few nights ago. In his daring, he reminded Ginyami of Valentin and the Japanese boy could tell immediately why the seeker considered Slava a good friend.

He was delighted that, not only had Slava remembered him, but he was being asked if he wanted to practice together. Hopefully it wasn't just because Slava had seen him practicing alone and felt sorry for him, but regardless of the reason, the invitation was too enticing to turn down. Aside from obtaining a practice partner, Ginyami was pleased to have the chance to get to know the Durmstrang quidditch player better.

"Of course! I would love that," he answered gleefully, watching Slava mount his broom before ascending to his height. "What good fortune to have been able to run into you here. Though I suppose it just goes to show how dedicated a player you are to be practicing even away from your own school," he commented, chuckling. "What position do you play, if I may ask? Should we go get some balls?"

Slava was pleased to see that Ginyami, too, grinned at the sight of him and eagerly accepted his invitation to practice together. It was certainly promising. The other boy commented on it being good fortune to run into him here and how dedicated he must be to be practicing away from his school. Slava grinned. “What can I say? I love Quidditch. Also, I could say the same for you.” After all, Ginyami had been here first doing exactly the same thing Slava intended to, which only meant that he was just as dedicated if not more so.

He then asked what position Slava played. “Beater- uh- Keeper? I was a Beater but now I’m a Keeper. My мама (mom/mum) made me leave the team to get my grades up, so now I have to work my way back to Beater.” He shrugged. “So both are good,” he added jovially. “And you?” He nodded when Ginyami suggested that they get some balls to practice with, swooping back down to the ground and making his way to the shed that contained all the stuff Hogwarts students would need in order to practice. “Hmm,” he mumbled, selecting a trunk of Quidditch balls and lifting it up.

Chuckling as Slava pointed out that he could say the same for Ginyami, the Japanese boy extended his arms to either side. "Guilty as charged. I suppose that's one thing we have in common. But what's this? No glitter or make-up today? Or are those only for special occasions?"

When Slava answered Ginyami's question about the position he played, the latter's brows rose in surprise. He nodded in understanding, looking thoughtful as he continued to listen to the Durmstrang student's explanation regarding his position on his school's quidditch team. "I wasn't aware one had to 'work their way' back to being a Beater. Is it difficult?" he asked, pondering the matter.

"As for me, I used to play as a Keeper when I was younger, so it's the position I know how to play best. I had to quit my school's team as well, though, so it has been a few years since I've played an official game. I'm hoping to regain my position as a Keeper in the coming year, however, so I have been trying to get back into practice."

He followed after Slava when the curly-haired young man descended in order to fetch the quidditch balls from a shed. "What do you think we should use to practice? The quaffle? The bludgers? What did you want to practice playing as?"

Ginyami asked about the lack of glitter and makeup and Slava smiled. “Oh, no, the ball was my first time trying makeup. My friend Hanya did it for me, he’s good at it. And as for glitter…” He reached into his pocket and, grinning, pulled out a pinch of glitter. “It is a necessity.” Ginyami should be grateful that they were both on their brooms, in the air. If they were on the ground without as much threat from the wind, that glitter would have been relocated to Ginyami’s clothes immediately.

Ginyami questioned why Slava wasn’t yet Beater, and Slava realized he had explained it poorly when he said he had to work his way back. “Ehhhh, it’s more that Beater is a popular position in our school and we have very talented players. There was a brief vacancy with backup Keeper so I’d rather take that than try to force my esteemed teammates and friends out of the Beater position,” he explained. Ginyami, in turn, told Slava about Keeper being his position but that he had also had to leave the team. Slava nodded along in acknowledgement while the other boy spoke, and then smiled. “Good luck!” His smile grew into a slightly mischievous grin. “Well, want to show me your skills?”

They were on the ground for a moment, selecting which balls they would need. “I can help you practice Keeper. The same precision is needed for scoring, blocking, and for firing Bludgers, even if the moves are different.” He practiced a lot as it was—it wouldn’t hurt to help Ginyami out. Besides, today he was more interested in just having fun and hopefully getting to know Ginyami slightly better rather than making sure he was practicing the exact moves needed for his positions. Additionally, trying to score goals was more similar to blocking them than to Bludger-batting, and while returning to Beater was Slava’s end goal, he was still playing as Keeper this season. In the event that Johannes got knocked out, Slava would have to be ready.

"Oh, your first time?" Ginyami repeated when Slava explained about his make-up. "I didn't realize. You wore it so well! And your friend Hanya did an excellent job." The appearance of more glitter along with Slava's grin caused the Japanese student to laugh. He really liked Slava's playful spirit. Ginyami imagined glitter must have been useful both towards friends and against enemies and wondered if he should take a page out of the Durmstrang teen's book.

He listened and nodded in understanding at the mention of Beater being a very popular position and the reason why Slava was in the Keeper position. "That's considerate of you," Ginyami commented sincerely. "I'm sure you're a valuable asset to your team regardless of what position you play. But I hope you get to play a Beater again soon. And thank you for the luck; I may very well need it." He chuckled softly at the sight of Slava's mischievous grin. "Show you my skills? Only if you're willing to show me yours!"

The offer to help him practice playing as a keeper caused Ginyami to tilt his head, curious. "Ah, yes, the accuracy. But how would you propose to help me? Would you be playing as a beater and hitting bludgers in my direction? Perhaps toward the goal hoops?" he asked, laughing a little at the idea. "Maybe I could even borrow a beater bat to try to hit them back and away from the goals."

Like Slava, Ginyami was more interested in having fun and learning more about his companion than actually practicing during this rare chance to play with him, but the idea of how they might get to practice together intrigued him.

Ginyami complimented Slava’s makeup from the ball and the Russian grinned in return. “Thank you!” He was pleasantly surprised that it had been received so well—boys wearing makeup wasn’t all that common, and yet he had only received positive comments. While he didn’t much care about the opinions of people who didn’t like him or things he did, it was still always nice to receive compliments. He would likely try eyeliner on again, and he would have to learn how to do it himself so that he didn’t have to ask Johannes for help every time. He nodded at the comment about his friend doing a good job. “He’s very talented, and not just with makeup. Hey, if you plan to go to the summer camp in a few months and watch the international Quidditch games, you could see him then. He’s the main Keeper for Durmstrang.”

"That's considerate of you," Ginyami said upon hearing the reasoning behind Slava’s position. Slava shrugged. He was the type of person to always look out for others in his own way—he was not the most observant or emotionally intelligent, but he was kind and cared deeply about other people. It didn’t even occur to him to try to seriously compete with his teammates and take over their position—he had just settled into the role of second-string Keeper because that was the position that was vacant and needed, and he loved Quidditch regardless of the position he played. It was the flying and the sport that he enjoyed, not ruining the fun of it with excessive seriousness. Nevertheless, he appreciated the compliment Ginyami offered when he said "I'm sure you're a valuable asset to your team regardless of what position you play." Slava smiled. “That’s kind of you, thank you.” He nodded as Ginyami thanked him for the well wishes, and then shook his head at the notion that Ginyami would need the luck. “I am sure you will do well.”

Slava grinned at Ginyami’s willingness to go with the flow and put himself out there. Some people weren’t like that—they were hesitant, or condescending, or just generally boring, and he always found that to be disappointing. But when someone was willing to follow their whims, be personal, and live a little? Slava appreciated that more than anything. Those people who had fun, lived in the moment, and weren’t so serious were the type of people he wanted to be around. And while he didn’t know the full extent of Ginyami’s personality or flexibility, he had been receptive to Slava so far and seemed fun and easygoing. That was always a good place to start.

"But how would you propose to help me? Would you be playing as a beater and hitting bludgers in my direction? Perhaps toward the goal hoops? Maybe I could even borrow a beater bat to try to hit them back and away from the goals." Slava started laughing at Ginyami’s suggestions. “Oh, no, that wasn’t what I meant. I just meant I could pretend to be a Chaser for you.” He paused, chuckling again. “Although some of those ideas were interesting… they sound fun too, if you wanted to try one of them. I’m fine with anything.” He smiled.
