In the Corn Maze - Oktoberfest
Well, this was annoying.

Daniel didn’t even like mazes. He liked to do them in the Daily Prophet, sure, but being in one himself? He wasn’t a rat in some silly muggle experiment. He didn’t want to test himself to see how well he could get through one. He didn’t really care. So… why was he here? In a relatively large, square opening in the corn maze?

Funny story. Or, not so funny story. He was walking, minding his own business, avoiding the larger crowds. The maze looked interesting, and he wandered in just a little, more curious on what it was than actually doing it. One turn turned into two, and then two turns into four, and then a branch and… now he was here. A look of irritation was painted along his soft features; the way his eyes danced along the rows upon rows of corn, the slight wrinkle in his nose, the crease between his eyebrows. This was annoying. What person thought this was a good idea?

But then, if it had to be any worse, he wasn’t alone. Someone else was there with him; whether it was because she followed or because she got lost too, it didn’t matter to Daniel. Anastasia Beckett. Out of all the gross, cootie-ridden girls on the grounds of Hogwarts, he had to be stuck with her.

He stayed silent, mentally attempting to map out the last few curves he had done to see if he could get back to at least an exit. He was coming up blank. Every turn seemed similar, and he wasn’t really aware of any of the landmarks.

“Well?” he asked towards the Gryffindor. Partially a dismissive word, but also just looking to see if she had any ideas. In his opinion, she looked equally as lost as he did.

Anastasia had been having a rough day before she'd managed to get stuck with bloody Daniel Weaver of all people. She'd put a second year in detention, gotten another nasty letter from her parents, and ran into her second least favorite person. She'd been trying to calm herself down by messing around in the maze for a bit and thinking her way out. She was always good at mazes on paper, but she'd gotten lost due to her foul mood and then, if that hadn't been enough, had run into Daniel Weaver.

She considered her options. She supposed she could send up sparks or something to get help, but that seemed silly and like the weakling's way out, so she wasn't about to suggest that. In that same vein, she could just set the entire maze on fire, but she felt like there were multiple downsides to that idea, not the least of which being they would then be stuck in a burning maze and would end up in trouble for setting things on fire. The young Gryffindor racked her brain for a potentially useful spell. The only ones that she could think of at the moment were the wand lighting charm, which wasn't going to be much use unless they were still stuck in the maze when the sun went down, the Sneezing Hex, and the Dancing Feet charm. She was quite good at the latter two, but their only effect at the moment would be to torment Daniel, and, as amusing as she would have normally found that, it seemed to her that hexing the person you were stuck in a maze with wasn't the best course of action.

She bit her lip as she tried to think of a way out when one occurred to her. She remembered their lecture on the levitation charm and while she remembered the professor emphatically telling the class that the spell couldn't levitate humans, it could levitate clothing. The only issue with that plan was it required a certain level of trust that didn't exactly exist between her and Daniel. Still, she wanted out of this nasty little maze so she could go finish her book or talk to literally anyone other than Daniel or something. "Are you any good at the Levitation Charm?" she finally asked, her dark eyes focusing intensely on the boy.

It wasn't like Daniel liked being stuck here, with Anastasia of all people. She was annoying, and a braggart, and she thought she was better than everyone because of not just her blood status, but because of her wealth. Daniel, while not as high spoiled as the other pureblood was, shared just as many opinions as she did. He hated the fact that she thought she was untouchable. Look at her now, he told himself. Unconsciously, he sneered towards her as he tried to reason with himself. What was the best course of action? Retracing their steps? Burning a spot on the ground to mark where they've been? He thought about it until Ana finally spoke up.

"No, not really," he replied to her question about the levitation charm. He remembered doing the homework, but it took him several tries in class to finally get it to work, and he knew he had to practice it more. As much as he didn't like the Gryffindor he was stuck with, the last actual thing he wanted was to have her experience what Jarleth Hobart, the creator of the spell, suffered. He wasn't that vindictive towards her. At least, not right now.

"We can mark out where we've been. I'm assuming you know Incendio?" he scratched his fingers along his cheek as he thought about it, "We can mark the grass where we've been whenever we take a turn. I don't think the professors would mind if we just mark an initial or something minor in the grass. It's not like we're giving the way to anyone," he added. He retrieved his own wand from the hidden, inner pocket of his jacket, and pointed it at the ground.

"Incendio." The spark of red and orange shot from his wand and burned for a moment on the ground before he stepped it out. On the ground was an obvious burn mark. It wasn't obvious, of course, if you weren't looking for it. He glanced towards his forced companionship, "What do you think?"

Anastasia frowned when he said his levitation charm wasn't going to help them. Hers was fairly decent, she'd gotten it on her second try in class, but she hadn't practiced it too many times since then, and she somehow doubted that Daniel would trust her to levitate him under those conditions. Not that she would have trusted him to levitate her, but she was going to cross that bridge when she got there. No use dwelling on that now, since it clearly wasn't an option. She unconsciously twirled her wand between her fingers the same way she had seen some of her muggle-born classmates fidgeting with pencils.

A grin made its way onto her face at the mention of Incendio. She positively loved that spell. Sure, she wasn't actually allowed to set people on fire like she so often threatened, but she still quite liked it and considered it one of her best spells. She wondered if her love of the fire making charm was exactly normal, or exactly healthy for that matter, but she didn't much care. She was allowed to like whatever spells she wished. It occurred to her that she was starting to argue with herself over something rather stupid, so she turned her attention back to her unwanted partner and his idea.

"I suppose marking where we've been is a place to start, but I don't think that actually really helps us  figure out a method of escape," Anastasia said, pressing her lips together. Marking were they had gone would be helpful to make sure that they didn't end up walking around in circles, but it seemed to her that it wouldn't actually help them get out of the maze.

A broomstick would be incredibly useful right about now. Even being a bit taller would be helpful. An idea occurred to her, but she utterly loathed it. There was no way she was going to try to have Daniel help her climb on top of the maze, or even worse, help him climb it herself. First off, climbing things like some street urchin would make both of them look silly, secondly, she would have preferred to have a more thoughtful solution, and third, climbing mazes seemed like an excellent way to injure oneself.

Daniel rolled his eyes as Ana pointed out that it wouldn’t help them get out of the maze. Sure it would. They’d be able to mark where they had been. As long as they don’t re-walk the same path, they’ll eventually find the exit. Plus, the hedges seemed far too tall for either of them to see, even if he reluctantly had Ana on his shoulders. He was the taller one, after all. He pondered about it for a moment before he stood up and dusted his pants off and secured his wand back in his pocket. A quick double check to make sure everything was where it was meant that he was good to go.

He returned his gaze at the girl that he had spent most of his younger life with by force of stupid parents. She didn’t really even seem interested in figuring out how to get out of the maze. His eyes trailed from her to the various openings from the center, where they stood. There were four paths - Daniel knew which one he went through, which is the one he already marked, “Did you come in the same path I did? We can go from there. At least then we can either go through the way we came, or go through another path. I wish professors taught us better spells than the ones they have - a lot of them are pretty useless. I think we should have been taught Four-Point Spell, in my opinion. Maybe by the end of the year,” Daniel mused.

He liked Charms a lot, and quite enjoyed the class. The thing was, why wouldn’t they teach things like the previously mentioned one? Either way, he looked around again. He’d let Ana call the shots for the time being, and if she chose to walk through one of the various paths, he’d most likely follow reluctantly. If she didn’t mark which one they went through, he’d do that, too. They’d have to use teamwork, although he doubted the Gryffindor understood that concept.

Anastasia rolled her eyes at Daniel's rolling his at her. He had always been far more patient than she, as her parents so loved to remind her in letters. Still, she didn't want to spend all day in the maze, she didn't want to spend all day with the irritating Daniel bloody Weaver, and she certainly didn't want to spend all day in a maze, with the aftermentioned irritating person. Honestly, the idea of just setting the whole thing on fire was sounding better and better to her. Would it even catch fire? Seeing as it was all grass? No, she had seen trees on fire and such. It would positively reek though, so she shelved that idea again.

"I came from the one to my right, I certainly did not come from the same way as you," she said, unable to resist wrinkling her nose at the idea of her and Daniel being that similar. She hated to admit it, but the two really were quite similar, with the biggest difference between them being Anastasia's slightly more fiery nature. She wasn't one to let things lie, she took matters into her own hands and made things happen sooner rather than later. Even when they were children, her parents had always said that she ought to be more patient like Daniel. Whenever she did anything wrong, Daniel was brought up. Honestly, it was like they were trying to make her resent him. She vaguely remembered a point in time that she didn't loathe him, but that idea seemed demented to her now. "You do bring up a good point - they teach us how to make sparks in two different colors, but not a spell that would be more practical in a situation like this."

Tiring of waiting around and not really doing anything, she turned, burnt the ground where she had come from, and chose a path. They had a 50 percent chance of picking the right path, and if not, they'd at least eliminate one way out.
