P.V. FOR DECEMBER FAUST

THERE were a few sounds of indecisive book turning in one of the aisles of the library. The source of the sound had spent time in an effort to find the right book. It was relentless but also lost in the way it searched, returning binding after binding in an almost futile effort. What was he looking for again? That was right, not the history of the North American Quidditch League, but the history of Quidditch itself alone. It was a short-lived effort, till he found a worn binding of an interesting text that had ‘Quidditch: The Origins of Wizardkind’s Greatest Pastime’ etched into its worn out leather.

REID had his head tilted an awkward ninety-degree angle, using his hand to steady his reading glasses as he gave it another once over. Finally, he pulled it out carefully and blew the dust off its cover to rid it of the layer that caked it. A whimsical cloud of debris was launched at the patron on the other side of the shelf and caused them to sneeze. Reid realized his mistake like a deer and headlights and scampered off to find the table he and his partner had used to designate their domain. He wanted to show his peers that he wasn’t a total slacker, at least he got a book to begin with.

SMOOTHLY, Reid slipped into his seat with the book in his hand and placed it on the table with swift ease. It was heavy, but not too heavy for someone like him. He was coloured curious about the book’s contents and he began laying out his paper and quill, the cursed writing instrument he still wasn’t used to. It was a year later and he still had trouble with making sure his quill was for writing and not tearing pages. The book was opened, pages were turned and Reid found himself overwhelmed by the infinite lines in the table of contents.

HIS finger ran over the yellowed pages, analyzing the look of it rather than the actual words that was inked on the pages. He found it interesting, it was old but it held some sort of modernity in it. Before he got himself too lost, he heard a gentle thud behind him to see that there was a paid off students already getting to work on something. Reid glanced at the empty chair in front of him, would they come? He fumbled in the pocket of his slightly dirty dress pants to pull out a pocket watch, it was given to him by Dymphna’s father, he might as well put it to good use. After a while, he began to realize that he was a little too early.

BUT if he didn’t come early, he would have surely come late. There was no in between for him, the boy was simply not gifted in the art of time management and he found himself obsessing over minute things half the time. She wasn’t late, he was just came an hour sooner than he anticipated and was now going to pay the price. At least he could obsess over the thing him and his partner was studying about, glorious Quidditch. Just like muggle football, he clung onto it like air and found himself reading the Daily Prophet’s coverage of the Quidditch World Cup like a bundle of sacred texts.

HOPEFULLY, she found this interesting or he could somehow make it interesting for her, though he wasn’t one to judge. Not everyone liked sports, but it wouldn’t hurt to have another interested fan in the mix. Reid tried to dismiss the semantics of how their project session was going to go, he just hoped that this wasn’t going to end in something other than a good day’s work. She was a Slytherin from what he saw, what if she was mean? His face went a little pale at the thought, he didn’t meet the nicest Slytherins in his past year or so at Hogwarts.

ONE had thrown something at him, another had quite the silver tongue, the other seemed quite broody. He had yet to find someone who didn’t ooze the rumors that were whispered among his peers about the green and silver house. Still, he sat there with a need to preoccupy himself with the book he chose rather than entertain the doubts that plagued his mind.

There was a moment when December knew how this day would turn out. Maybe it was the moment when she had managed to accidentally spill a pot of ink on her tie, leaving a dark blotch near the top that had also stained her t-shirt. She had took her time to remove the stain but by the time she did she was... yet again, late. It was heaven sent that she managed to avoid running into anyone whilst rushing towards the library, but what really took the case was when she had managed to accidentally slip and fall on her knees at the last possible second. Her knees ending up getting scraped, as well as a small tear in her stockings. She had simply gotten up and brushed herself off, ignoring the chuckles of the paintings as they watched this tragedy. It was no secret to these paintings that this girl had always managed to get herself into trouble, as well as have some of the worst luck they had seen in quite a while.

She had briefly seen her partner out of the corner of her eye during the assignments during her history course. She hadn't really managed to get a good view due to how her head was always down, although she was sure that he was... tall? When they had finally 'spoken', all she could recall was how flushed she was, how she had barely managed to agree before running off for another class. It was sheer embarrassment that always guided her actions. And this time it was just... hard. It was hard because all she wanted was to be able to act normally. And this time she was paying the price as she was struggling to recall their meeting location.

She was coming up very short. She went by row and row of books, shyly peeking out as she took her time, trying to gauge who her partner was. Twenty minutes had passed since they were initially supposed to meet, and quite frankly, she was more than embarrassed. O-oh jeez... maybe I should just go home. Nobody wants something this disorganized as a partner, let alone clumsy... her face flushed as she chastised herself in her head, before remember that they had set a location for their meeting. When she finally reached the right row, she peeked her head out, face flushed as she tapped her fingers against the bookshelf, nervously wringing the edge of her scarf as she noticed the boy looking over the books themselves, barely managing to come up with words.

All she had managed so far were a few stutters, as her freckles began to blend with the blush of her face, before closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. "I-I-I'm so... so... so-sorry!" She apologized soft in the library as she managed to take the seat across from him, already pulling out neat, orderly notes, annotated accordingly. "I-I just.... I... b-bad morning," she had barely managed to make the words out as she felt so small in comparison to his frame, feeling herself start to shrink behind the papers she held in her hands.

"I-I... wrote...some ideas... for...." she trailed off as she pushed the notes towards him, neat and orderly with books listed for potential research one of them being the one in his hands. She had several notes written in the margins, including general notes about Quidditch, including such gems as 'sport???', 'I really don't understand why so many people get injured', 'what kind of people play this? It's interesting...' and 'I have no idea what I'm doing'. She put her hands in her lap as she looked down to her lap, feeling a little defeated. Usually she was so on top of her assignments but this was a rare time where she wasn't sure where to start.

TWENTY minutes passed and Reid wondered if she had gotten lost on the way here. Was he visible enough for her to see him? Maybe it was wasn't as obvious as he thought it was and it made him wonder if he should go look for her. He had just about closed his book when he noticed December come up to the table, prompting a smile to appear on his features. Reid opened it against as he chuckled a little, feeling sorry for seemingly making her go all the way to the library for a simple meeting. "Ideas?" he echoed curiously.

THE young Hufflepuff leaned forward to pull the notes a little closer to him, eyeing it rather curiously as he perused it. "These are brilliant by the way, the notes." He looked back up and traded the books towards her, hoping she would perhaps find some interest in it. "I found some books on Quidditch, I don't know if they'll be any good though. Don't worry about being late by the way, twenty minutes past is a good day for me." Reid joked. He could tell she seemed nervous, it wasn't hard to read and he felt the need to dispel it if he could. It was him at some point whenever he met new people, he found his mind to often be louder than the person he was talking. It was a distraction to him if anything and it was an uncomfortable one at that.

BESIDES, they would be working together, it was no use in making things odd. He was still looking at her notes, nodding along as he read them using his pointer finger to guide himself. Reid was actually interested in her notetaking, the annotation and the organization was nothing short of great. His fingers gently drummed the polished wooden surface of the table. He would be ashamed to show her his notes, it wasn't as neat or well thought out as hers.

IT dawned on him that he had been quiet for nearly a whole minute and his head shot up as a result. "I got a little sidetracked. I just barely got started on my notes, so I was figuring out what you had compared to me." He sheepishly gestured towards his half-filled note page, hopefully, she wouldn't mind. "By the way, thank you for even taking these notes so quickly ..." What was her name again? A grimace replaced his features as he tried to recall the moment they met one another.

HIS memory was terrible and it made him seem careless, which frankly made him annoyed of himself. "December, right? I'm sorry." There was a short laugh that tumbled from his lips as he pinched the bridge of his nose in weary embarrassment. "I'm not as disorganized and forgetful all the time, I swear. It's just all of the reading sort of just uh - makes me ..."

REID caught himself, he was about to spiral into a ramble that often made him wonder how his peers tolerated him. His hands went up as if to stop him, breathing slightly as he let out what sounded like a hybrid of a laugh and a sigh. "I'm Reid. Please don't hesitate to tell me to stop, I gab all the time." His voice edged on amusement and yet apologetic at the same time.

"Trouble usually finds me."

December was relieved to see that he didn't make a huge deal about her tardy appearance. She couldn't help but feel relieved to see a warm smile in a place this cold and it threw her for a good loop, prompting a small smile to tug at her mouth. "O-oh.. um... t-thank you," she nodded at his comment on her notes, feeling the flush on her face again as she felt her fingers clutch at the side of her robes, trying her best to finally act like a normal person. A normal person. Which she wasn't. God this was embarrassing.

And this guy! She had to admit this was the first upperclassmen that she had talked to but he was also, well, really nice? Extremely nice. Something that she almost felt too cautious about but she couldn't help but notice how sweet he was. She almost felt more awkward in his presence, as if she couldn't believe that he would want to work on this with her. But then again, it was assigned. Assigned. After this, he wouldn't want to be near her and that would be okay too. Who would want to be around someone who can't even finish a sentence?

"Books?" her eyes lit up, so glad to be distracted from her own thoughts, as she took the edition in her hands, carefully tracing over the binding with her fingers. She opened the book carefully, feeling the worn leather beneath her fingers. Her eyes lit up as her blush faded, giving her seconds to skim over the edition information. "A first edition! You can never find versions like this! This is probably the original binding too and well, it's so beautiful! I don't know much about the subject but..." her voice faded as she looked at Reid with a broad smile. "T-this is..... great," her voice was quiet but her blush was gone as she finally had something to focus on that wasn't how clumsy she was. She felt a good sense of relief as she finally had a topic she didn't need to feel the pit of anxiety about, and work was always good.

"D-don't worry about the notes but, yes... December. December Faust." her voice was gentle as she smiled at him. "I-I'm honestly the same. P-please, having... someone else t-talking is such a good thing for me. I l-like listening.," her voice was a little more confident as she carefully moved to the proper chapter, a diagram of the Quidditch field displayed across its pages. "God, the ink on this is... gorgeous. And that sheen! Oh my god this is a great find," her voice was quiet as she praised the manuscript, carefully pouring over the pages as she came back to the diagram, looking up at Reid. "W-would you mind.. explaining how the game works?" her voice was sheepish as she asked softly, before lowering her lashes to carefully look at the diagram once again. "I-I know I took notes but..." her voice trailed off as she looked at the image, feeling lost once again about how the game may work.
