Daffy was gawking at the quidditch pitch.
Daffy had seen many quidditch fields in her life but the one at Hogwarts had something special about it.
She imagined herself training there in the morning or at dusk.
She hoped there would be spots for the Gryffindor team and she would be taken as a chaser.
Waking from her dreams, she had an hour or two before she had to return to the castle.
She hopped on the school broom she had borrowed. And she shot upwards.
She took a couple of laps around the field a couple of laps around the field to refresh her memory.
When she felt ready she started to take it seriously.
She practiced a lot of things she had almost forgotten.
She felt like she was on the field next to her house flying before going to sleep.
She would feint, she would make a pass to a teammate, she would steal a pass. She stretched her arms to receive, once she was about to fall because she had not practiced for a long time, but after that she controlled it perfectly.
Suddenly she picked up speed, she was so happy and relaxed that she had accelerated without realizing it.
She was going to crash into the hoop, she wouldn't have time to brake.
She turned down to avoid the crash but then she had another problem, she was going to crash into the ground. She concentrated all her efforts on raising the broom, she would not be able to brake but maybe she could deflect and then land, but the broom did not respond. Daffy cursed the rule that first year students were not allowed to carry their own broomstick. Just when he thought she was going to crash, the broom responded and narrowly missed, landing abruptly as Daffy jumped off the broom.
She had touched the grass with the tip of her nose, and if she had crashed, she would have been in trouble.

Koko had risen early for her usual morning jog. She stretched in her dormitory, her cat Jax darting around her. He had grown a lot since she had adopted him in 2019. She could hardly believe that he was four years old.

Tying on her shoes, Koko smiled at him. 'I'll have to leave you here, okay? I can't have you getting lost this morning.' While Jax was a smart cat, he was also quite irresponsible and would run off if Koko ran with him. She really needed to invest in a leash, but she worried that even if she bought one, he might wriggle out of it.

Koko left for her run, but she ended up heading back to the Slytherin dormitories to grab her Silver Arrow. She wasn't quite sure why she decided to bring it with her ─ she didn't always practise Quidditch in the mornings, and she actually preferred running these days. Nonetheless, she held her broom in her left hand as she jogged, finding herself dreading its weight as she seemed to only inch closer to the Quidditch training pitch.

When she arrived, some students were already there. Most of them looked younger than Koko, and once again, Koko was struck by a staunch realisation: she was actually old compared to most of them. She would be an adult next year. She shuddered at the thought. At least she was still short ─ she hadn't grown since her third year. She didn't look too much older than most fourth years, she thought. Whether that was a blessing or a curse, she wasn't quite sure.

Koko wore a simple yellow blouse and trousers. She had a green cardigan on, but she had gotten hot on her run, so it was now tied around her waist. She tightened it as she walked onto the Quidditch training pitch, her broom now awkwardly held in the crook of her elbow.

Koko was gazing up at the sky, her eyes squinted against the glare of the autumn sun, when she saw a blur racing towards the ground near her. She stumbled backwards, surprised, and she knew that if she were on her broom already she would have zipped towards the student who seemed caught in a deep dive. As it was, though, Koko was on the ground, and she was not as confident on her legs as she was on her broom.

Once the girl landed, Koko hurried towards her and extended her arm (either in handshake or to help Daffy get up). 'I noticed your dive. Are you hurt?'

No, thank you. Said Daffy accepting Koko's hand.
It's been a long time since I played quidditch and I was enjoying myself so much that I picked up speed without realizing it and almost crashed," she said, visibly embarrassed.
Daffy looked at his hands, they were muddy from the sudden landing. Her face was also stained and there was grass in her hair.
And better not to talk about her clothes. The shirt was dirty and the plaid pants were torn at the knees.
Suddenly she realized that she was in front of a seventh grader.
She had seen her in the corridors and in the Great Hall but had never spoken to her, Daffy would like to be friends with her but she was too shy to ask (sometimes she didn't look like a Gryffindor).
Sorry, I'm so dirty. I'd better go and wash up," she said with her cheeks burning with embarrassment.
It dawned on him that he had his school broom lying on the floor.
She hurried to pick it up, she didn't want to seem rude since the first week and she could get a good scolding for not treating the school brooms well.
Do you play quidditch on the Slytherin team? she asked.

As Koko helped the girl up, she noticed the grass stains, but the girl seemed okay albeit dishevelled. Dishevelled was okay ─ although Koko herself didn't necessarily like to be that way herself, she understood it was just part of playing sports. She had lost count of the number of times her Quidditch robes had ended up stained with grass, mud, or worse, blood.

'Okay,' she told the girl, 'as long as you're alright.'

Koko tilted her head while the girl looked at her. This girl was definitely a younger year, and she actually seemed shorter than Koko. The thought was strange. Koko still thought of herself as a younger student. She remembered her Sorting, and she remembered how she'd initially gazed at the castle with innocent wonder in her eyes.

That innocence was still there, somewhere, Koko thought. Maybe the wonder was, too. She would have to find it again, somewhere other than Quidditch. She enjoyed Quidditch, sure, but she no longer had such childlike wonder when soaring on her broom. It was finesse, a talent, and above all, a game. The end goal was to win. Having fun wasn't all that mattered in a game of Quidditch.

The girl asked Koko if she played Quidditch on the Slytherin team, and for a moment, Koko's resting smile would be replaced by a bit of surprise. Was it that obvious? Koko's tenure on the Slytherin Quidditch team was rather impressive, she wouldn't lie, but there had been no Quidditch games yet this year. Apparently people still knew who she was even in passing, which, admittedly... was nice. It was nice to be recognised.

'Yes, I'm the first-string Keeper. Koko Riddle.' Koko would hold out her hand again, this time for a handshake. 'And you are?'
