After his first full week of classes, Pyxis was starting to get in the groove of things. His schedule was comprehensible, his dormmates were agreeable, and his teachers were brilliant. Of course, everything they spoke about still sounded like gibberish to him and the castle layout was like a corn maze on steroids, but he was not as disoriented as he expected to be. And as bewildering as the castle was, he’d been quite eager to go exploring every evening after his classes were done. Sure, he accidentally ran up the Astronomy Tower three times thinking there would be something different, but the energy he had allowed him to comb through every area that he was allowed to. All except one.

Pyxis hadn’t anticipated that wizards would create a sport out of spellcasting. He shouldn’t have been surprised, anyways. Human - er, muggles - created sports from anything. It was even his dream to be an esports professional, so the idea of duelling wasn’t so farfetched. During his time at the summer camp, Pyxis decided that wizarding sports were not for him. Quidditch was too confusing, broom racing looked like it would give him some broken bones, and duelling… well, duelling looked like all sorts of hell combined into one.

Yet, Pyxis stood in front of the large oak doors, spellcasters within somehow willing him to come forward with the calls of their incantations. He tried to tell himself that it was a bad idea. It was indeed a terrible idea for someone so bad at everything. But he couldn’t help it. The summer camp matches were just too enthralling, too exciting. He wanted to get a better look at things, and the only way to do that was to step through those doors.

He didn’t quite step. He peeked instead, observing the humungous room and its inhabitants. To the left stood several dummies, some of which were already occupied and taking different light colors of damage. To the right were stands on which some students were sitting, watching as their peers battled the dummies. Others were sprawled off, seemingly resting. Is duelling that exhausting?

Near the right side of the room stood a familiar face. She was definitely a part of the youngest group in the room, and with Pyxis’ inevitable entry, he would join her in decreasing the average age of the setting.

“Hiya! It’s Yun-Xin, right?” he asked while approaching her. “I didn’t expect to see you here. Well… I didn’t expect to be in here, either,” he laughed to himself. “Are you on the duelling team? Or planning to join?” he paused, considering the army-like feeling of the space, “Or are you just here for the vibes?”

A week had passed since the start of school to days filled with lessons, even more homework, and loads of parchment piling into Mount Everest. It was a typical hard-working style, which Xin had unfortunately, not gotten used to. She still got lost for hundreds of times in the big maze of Hogwarts, before finally having an idea of where all her lessons and the Gryffindor common room were. Oh, and there were always the vanishing steps and moving staircases that provided the absolute help in getting late for classes if you aren't careful.

With nothing to do on the weekends - she had finished the pile of homework earlier last night - the girl soon got bored out of her life. It was no good being in the common room or the girls’ dormitory, the scratching of quills on parchment was infuriating and tedious, to say the least. Xin needed to get out. So here she was, taking a breath. The familiar scent of the renowned dueling room hitting her nose as she enters the room.

She stood alone, constantly repeating all the dueling spells she has learned during the last few days. And once in a while, bright explosion of colors will shoot out of her wand at an unfortunate dummy. After a while, the young lion eventually got lost in her own thoughts. Her mind was running and slamming into another type of silence as spells made their way slicing on to dummies.

But just as she opened her mouth to cast an incendio at a metallic dummy, she was suddenly pulled back into reality by an energetic voice, as usual.

“Hiya! It’s Yun-Xin, right?”

The familiar voice snuck into her memory as she casted another fire-making spell that made the dummy burst into flames. She knew that voice. She knew who was approaching behind her back before even turned around.

It was Pixie, or Pyxis Hellebore if you prefer to call him by his full name. Wearing that large and enthusiastic grin like a Cheshire cat's upon his face. It brought a slight smile to Xin's lips and crimson to her cheeks.

“Hi Pixie - I mean Pyxis,” Xin smirked warmly as she wiped away beads of sweat from her forehead. It had just occurred to the girl how hot it was in the dueling room, she was sweating all over and her wet bangs stuck to her face, which she hastily smoothed.

“Are you on the duelling team? Or planning to join?” Pixie asked as the girl did her hair, “Or are you just here for the vibes?”

“Well, I've been waitlisted and definitely planning to join,” replied the lion and smiled dreamily at the thought, “Perhaps here for the vibes as well,” she added sheepishly after a millisecond.

“So,” she began, “You're into dueling as well?

There was a bit of regret in Pyxis for interrupting the girl as soon as he’d spotted her. Thinking back, the Gryffindor was clearly in the zone, casting perfect spells at her poor metallic opponents. As she turned to speak to him, her politeness never wavered which made him feel less like he was butting into an intense moment. Still, Yun-Xin’s focus had him enraptured and Pyxis became caught up in her appearance. She looked like one of those uber famous tennis players after they finished their set, or a boxer whose adrenaline was palpable when they triumphed over their opponent. She looked sweaty and messy. She looked cool.

This, of course, did wonders for Pyxis’ desire to be more involved in duelling. In fact, he was sure that he’d look back on this specific moment if the important wizard minister - ah, Minister for Magic - interviewed him for being the youngest duelling champion in a century. Though, he supposed he’d have to contend with Yun-Xin for this title.

Anyways, the young wizard was getting much too far ahead of himself. Even he could see that, as his future life flashed before his eyes. He refocused on the girl again, a warm tint making its way to his own cheeks as she let her nickname for him slip through her teeth. Pixie? Well, he couldn’t say he didn’t like it. He would have preferred something manlier, or more mysterious, but the Slytherin couldn’t help the internal giggles that plagued his chest. Unwilling to draw attention to her slip of the tongue, he pushed that feeling down, only noting the nickname for his possible esports alias if this wizard thing didn’t work out.

“Waitlisted?” That didn’t sound right. Yun-Xin was absolutely decimating that dummy. Does that mean that the people on the Gryffindor team are even more ruthless than her? Pyxis started feeling faint. “Well, from what I’m seeing, I think you’ll make the team in no time,” he continued, shaky at first, but straightening himself out when he realized that he didn’t want to look weak in front of Yun-Xin.

“I… I’m not really sure about duelling yet. I haven’t been able to cast any spells outside of practice in class and even then, I’m not very good. I can’t help but find it so fun to watch though, and there’s a big part of me that wonders how fun it’d be to participate. Is it like that for you?” he asked, then tacked on something else after noting how natural she looked in her state, “Or are the training vibes just your thing?”
