Well, today was the day! Exciting, wasn't it? Now I was really going to be putting my gnome, Jip Fitzpatrick, to the test. I had painted Jip with a cheery smile, which he flashed at everyone. I set him down at the starting line, giddy with excitement, which I honestly hated to admit. It didn't look the gnomes had to carry us, as I had previously thought, which was good, because if I did, I don't know how I'd feel, honestly.

I grinned and said, partly to myself, "Alright, little guy. Show 'em what you can do." I had confidence in my gnome, and I was really excited to see how this would play out. And then I heard a familiar voice... "Incoming, gnome incoming!" Who was that? I didn't dwell on the moment for too long, though, I was waiting for the race to start! I then heard a tired voice near me: "Seems like we're spared from racing,"

I turned around to see a familiar face. It was Avery, from the gnome-creating event. "Hi Avery!" I said, beaming. I had vaguely wondered if I'd see him at the race. "Yes, we are spared, luckily. I was really sceptical that gnomes about a third or quarter of my size could actually carry me through the race!" I was kind of hoping we'd be spectators, anyway. "But hey, at least we get to cheer our gnomes on from afar! I am so ready for this."

"I think I would've been in good shape to make it to the end with Flynnid, so I guess I'll never really get to show my true athleticism to the world," Avery said. Sure...maybe that was why he was breathing like he had just run a mile? "Mhmm..." I said, obviously unconvinced. I was really looking forward to the prospect of seeing Flynnid and Jip race against each other.
"Yeah, I'm super excited! I can't wait to see how this will turn out. And I'm looking forward which of our gnomes crosses the finish line first!"

Soon, the race started. I watched as the gnomes crossed the finish line, first came the first 5, and then the rest slowly followed suit. I clapped as the gnomes made their way through the obstacle course and eventually got across the finish line. The gnomes were making great progress, and I clapped hard as the 3rd set of gnomes came around, the ones at 115 seconds. Jip and Flynnid were two of them! "They made it! Amazing!" I interjected.

"Ah. There you are!" EmmaLee said, turning as Stephen approached from the crowd. She tipped her parasol forward to cover her reddening face as her friend complimented her dress.

Why was she so flustered about his compliment? When had she ever cared about other people's opinions? Especially about her clothes. She dressed pretty because she liked to, right? It had nothing to do with whether Stephen, or anyone else for that matter, might find her pretty. Yeah. Right.

"Why thank you, Sir Stephen." She said sheepishly, tilting her parasol back up to look at him with a shy smile. She had grown a couple of inches, a sudden growth spurt at the end of school, since the Royal ball, so their height difference wasn't as significant as it had been.

"I am so excited for these races and it is such a stunning day for a race." She said, bouncing a bit on her toes in excitement and turning back to the course. "That is my gnome right there." She continued, pointing to its red, racecar covered hat. "I'm sure we'll have fun Gnome Matter What." She finished, giggling at her own pun.

As the race started, Emily cheered loudly and the Gnomes took off. She cheered louder as their gnomes passed obstacle after obstacle and very quickly across the Finish line, Gnome N. Clature tying a few others for first place and Gnome Matter What tying a few more for second.

"Race one down!" EmmaLee cheered happily.
